Chapter Four

“How The World Fell"

“So you really have no idea how everything got the way it is?” Torrel asked as he stared at Peter. The incredulous look was unnerving as the boy stared at him. Peter looked to Mother Abby to see if she would do anything.

“Torrel! Stop that. Maybe if we educate him some of his memories might come back.” She said and Torrel muttered an apology as we went and sat waiting to hear her tell the story. Nu’al leaned against the wall not looking at Peter but Peter could feel his eyes probing him.

He could only guess what Nu’al thought of him but he seemed more quiet and reserved while Torrel was more boisterous and loud.

“Even since Roman times,” Mother Abby began to explain. “Societies built on a republic were doomed to fail. The idea was solid but politicians have a way of becoming greedy and foul things up. It was only a matter of time before ours destroyed itself.

It started with one man! A man named Don Trump. He was a rich tycoon that gained a lot of power and influence through his business deals. He knew how the system was rigged and was able to manipulate it. At first many loved and respected him but then he ran to be president and soon it split the nation in half.

He lured Republicans to his side and they fully supported him because they loved as he told them what they wanted to hear. He became their champion against the other side, the Democrats.

Democrats tried to oppose him and made up any kind of story that their followers wanted to hear. Fake charges, propaganda was being spread rapidly as a tactic to keep the nation divided.”

“Yeah, I know. The guy is a real asshole.” Peter replied and Mother Abby shook her head.

“I’m not saying he isn’t but the whole thing was fake! It became clear early on that both sides were in bed with each other. The politicians used him as a scapegoat!

They would say he broke laws and committed crimes but he was never brought to justice. Republicans would brand support and Democrats would shout their hate. All this to keep the people divided from each other.

As one politician said “With Don Trump it is not politics as usual!” The truth was the whole matter was just sleight of hand to keep everyone distracted while the government went about a secret operation called Operation Purge!

Our country had signed a deal that we would not make any nuclear weapons because of their dangers. However nuclear weapons just don’t disappear because we sign an arms deal. Nuclear material is very dangerous and takes years before it breaks down. Plus, there is the problem with radiation…

The weapons we had were collected and outfitted to a large flying platform. On the platform Dome City was built in Area 51. The story about aliens and government secrets kept most people away so they could construct their weapon in peace.

Despite evidence to the contrary, the idea of climate change was pushed to stir up people’s fears. Soon environmentalists pushed to have nuclear power plants dismantled. This gave the government more nuclear material so they could make more bombs.

Dome city was outfitted to be a self-contained ecosystem inside a glass dome to protect the limited number of inhabitants inside. Selected individuals and families were chosen so that the dome could remain functioning once the great purge happened. Several races were chosen to keep diversity flourishing. The only problem was who would be the chosen elites out of all the world population. Not to mention which animals to save because every species could not be saved.

It is unclear if it was done deliberately or was a random accident but during President Trump’s term in office he was assassinated. The propaganda stirred up many people and some that were mentally unstable became very violent. One somehow slipped by the defenses and actually killed Don Trump!

Another civil war exploded as Democrats fought Republicans. The rest of the world geared up for war expected us to destroy ourselves and they would swoop in to defeat us and take over. Only we decided to use Dome City to begin The Great Purge.

With the chosen safety aboard, Dome City flew upward and encircled The Earth’s Atmosphere. It used nuclear weapons to eradicate all life left on the planet. This would make it unlivable for decades, as you yourself experienced. Once The Great Purge was complete Dome City landed and established itself among the ruins.

For a time everything seemed peaceful but soon those chosen had families and the truth behind The Purge was revealed. The later generation rebelled and several of us created resistance groups to try and take back our lives from the government stooges that destroyed the world. That brings us to now when we heard a police scanner mentioning finding a young boy alive outside the dome.” Mother Abby explained. Peter could not believe what he was hearing.

“Not many can survive outside the dome. We survive because we live in space; others made bases underground or in the ocean.” Nu’al explained.

“One group even dug themselves a home in the mountains!” Torrel added.

“Over the decade the amount of radiation has diminished but it still is not completely safe out there. Radiation cannot be blocked temporarily and mildly treated but there is no way to permanently remove it. It will probably be even more decades before we can repopulate the planet.” Mother Abby said.

“And the animals?” Peter asked.

“Some are extinct now and can never be seen again. We’re lucky that a quarter of the world’s population, including animals, was saved but everything else was lost. That’s why we’re fighting. To stop the ones that did this and try to rebuild the world.

“And you’re one of those resistance groups?” Peter asked incredulously.

“We were the first to form. However the station we built could not house as many members of the resistance that we had. Others then branched out to form their own groups. There are roughly 4 teams of us and although we are separate we strive for the same goal.” Mother Abby said.

“I don’t remember any of this. It’s like a story that was made up and now I’m hearing it for the first time.” Peter replied.

“We’ll have to think of something else.” Mother Abby said. She placed her hand on Peter's shoulder and gave it a slight squeeze to comfort him.

Torrel and Nu’al were looking at each other silently. It almost looked as if they were sending secret messages to each other though they said nothing.

“So how did I get here? I couldn't have been out there on my own with that radiation. How did I lost my memory? IF I lost it.”

“He probably blocked everything out. Hell I wouldn’t want the memories of the world being vaporized in my head.” Nu’al replied.

“He would have been too young to remember the Great Purge if he was even born yet. It seems off that he remembers things that he could not remember.” Mother Abby said.

“There’s that science guy that’s friendly with us. Maybe he can do a test or something and find out where he came from.” Torrel said.

“That’s actually,” Nu’al started to say.

“A very good idea!” Mother Abby interrupted completing the thought. Peter just looked at them from one to another having no idea what they were talking about.

“We go back and get inside Dome City then find Dr. Mike and hopefully he can help Peter.” Torrel said.

“That's gonna have to sit a spell, because after our last visit they’re gonna be on high alert.” Mother Abby said.

“We got a room for him to stay in until we get things figured out?” Nu’al asked.

“The one next to mine is empty. It’ll need cleaning but it’s livable.” Torrel answered.

“Torrel you help get it cleaned out and get Peter settled. I‘ll send a message to Michael and see if he can help us.” Mother Abby ordered. Peter followed Torrel as he was led away. Both walked in silence and Peter tried thinking of something to say to break the awkward silence.

“So you’re a freedom fighter, huh.” Peter finally said weakly.

“Yeah,” Torrel replied without looking at him but continued to lead the way.

“Do you see much action?”

“Hell yeah, all the time!” Torrel said as he started to open up. “Been doing it since I was born.”

“Really?!”

“Yeah my ma was preggers with me when this whole thing first started. My first toys were guns and such so that I could fight for our freedom.” Torrel said.

“Sounds scary.”

“Naw, you get used to it. I killed so many people that I can no longer feel anything anymore.” Torrel said. Peter was skeptical about what he ewa saying but just let it pass. Torrel was young and when they met Nu’al was the one that seemed to be doing all the fighting. Peter didn’t want to call Torrel a liar but he just could not fully believe him.

“I never killed anyone before, what’s it like?”

“The gun feels like a cannon in your hand and with the power of the blasts you think you’re gonna be thrown against a wall. But not me, I handle it just fine. and I watch as they look at me with fear and you can see the life drain from their eyes. At first it was super scary but now it’s like whatever.” Torrel said. Peter had to pretend to be surprised as Torrel rambled on about how he was doing things that a superhero in a comic book might do.

Peter was surprised that he wasn’t telling stories about how he can fly and bend steel in his bare hands. A couple of the stories made Peter think of movies he had seem but he wasn’t sure with the way Torrel was telling it.

They finally arrived at the rooms and Torrel led the way as they began to clean. The dust made it difficult and made Peter wonder when it was last used. He did remember seeing footprints inside so he wondered if Toirrel had used the place as some sort of play room.

Torrel kept babbling on about how great he was and Peter silently chuckled as he pretended to be amazed by the tales.
