Half & Half
Dwane Carroll was just a normal human being until one day. It was a bright spring afternoon when he was cleaning out his grandfather's attic. In the dusty attic he found many antiques but one stood out. Dwane had found a beautiful shining mirror about 5 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide. When he tried to touch it his hand would go through. After playing with it for a couple of hours he built up the guts to put his head through. So Dwane held his breath and plunged his head through the mirror. What he saw was his grandfather's attic. So thinking no harm of it he went through the mirror. Dwane suddenly felt a warm feeling all over his body. So he put his hands out in front of him to push himself up and noticed they were now paws. When he stood up he looked down at his body, he was now a black and red stripped hyena. But he stood on both legs and still had memories, thoughts, and feelings like a human. Puzzled, he hid the mirror in his grandfather's room and walked downstairs. Strangely even though he had fur all over his body he still had on the same clothes as when he was human. When he saw his grandfather he was surprised to see he was an Irish setter with glasses. "There you are Night! Are you done cleaning the attic?" said his grandfather. "Night? Who is Night?" answered Dwane. "That's your name. Night Swifty now stop playing around! Did you finish cleaning the attic or not? "replied his grandfather. Dwane thought to himself "if everything in here is the same besides my name and the animals then 'Night' must live where I live and have all my memories but in animal form." Night spoke with authority "yes I'm done the attic now can I go home?" Night's grandfather said "yes" then drove him home. On the drive home Night thought of whom he could talk to about this without sounding crazy. Instantly Night thought of his best friend Mackenzie. Night wondered what animal she would be. As his grandfather was about to drive past her house he tapped his shoulder and said "you can drop me off here". His grandpa stopped the car and he hopped out. Then he walked up to his best friends' door and knocked with his paw. After about a minute a 5"2' white bunny rabbit with glasses opened the door. "Kenzy? Is that you?"Quizzed Night. "Of course it is!" replied Mackenzie with a hug. As Night told his best friend everything they sat on the curb and drank Monster energy drinks. Two Monster cans and fifteen minutes later kenzy said "wow". Then she thought about her next words and said "so if all this is true can't you just go back through the mirror?" asked Nights best friend. "Yes" replied Night "But I want to explore, see all the different animals. What harm could come from that? " He added. "Nothing I guess" replied Mackenzie fearful something would go wrong. So Night walked home to see his mom, a black and white panda. So no one would get suspicious Night started to act as if nothing had changed. After he talked to his mom about his grandfather's house he went to bed. The next day was a Monday and Night had to go to school to see his friends and learn. So as he did everyday Night got dressed. Night was starting to get used to his tail and paws. Last night he chased his tail for half an hour nonstop. When he got into school he saw his teachers and friends. Night noticed that the species were based on the person's personality. Smart people like Mr. Passyn would be owls, perky and happy people like Mackenzie would be rabbits, and so on. As Night walked the halls he saw skunks, vixens, deer, dogs, and many more. When Night got to lunch he saw his friends and examined them each in turn. Julian was usually a pale normal height Mexican with brown hair was now a blue and black dragon with scales and spikes along his back and tail. David, which was normally a person who looked quite like Julian but shorter and longer hair, was now a grey wolf. Harley was now a blue tabby cat. And Phil used to be a tall, perverted, gay, teen was now a tall, still perverted fox. Night sat down next to Mackenzie and together they all ate lunch and talked. Then David said "hey remember that time Night asked out that snow bunny and got slapped? "The whole group laughed. Then Night thought "Yea I remember but was I animal or human? It seems like only yesterday I was a human but I distinctly remember a paw going across my face. Why?" Night was awoken from his thought by Mackenzie's voice "Night are you ok?" Night replied with a "yes". Night tried to remember more about his human life but noticed he was unable to remember if he was animal or human. His human memories were somehow turning into animal memories. Night knew this was because he was staying here too long. He knew he had to get back to his world before he was ever human. After school Night and Mackenzie walked over to his house and talked. "So when are you going to go back to your world?" asked Mackenzie. "What?" Night said confused. "Through the mirror?" reminded Mackenzie. "What mirror?" answered Night.
FIVE YEARS LATER
Night was walking into his grandfather's room when he tripped. Now on the floor, Night saw a glint of light come from a mirror hidden under the bed. Night pulled out the mirror and tried to touch it but his paw when through. Not knowing what would happen Night put his whole body through the mirror. Dwane appeared on the other side of the mirror in his grandfather's room. Then he decided to take the mirror home just in case he wanted to go back.
