She would claim me just after our wedding, the wedding that my parents refused to bless. Despite being a low born human they still abhorred the thought of their only son marrying a beast woman. Fleabag, mongrel, fur whore, stinking animal, no matter what they called her I always knew what she was, my only love. On the bright side her parents weren’t nearly as picky when it came to who their daughter chose as a mate, though the fact that she had a small army of siblings may have played some small part of it.

The beer had been drunk, the feast devoured, our guests drunkenly stumbled out of the cavernous festival hall in small groups as it became clear the wedding festivities were coming to an end. It still astounds me that she was able to get access to the only festival hall in the Kings castle for our wedding. Even with her status as a vetted member of the royal guard she must have had to pull some serious favors to gain ownership of it for a night, our royal highness wasn't exactly known for his generous favors.

I remember how she looked in her ceremonial armor just before we retired to her quarters. Metal plates polished to a shining silver with equally lustrous brass accents, wide golden loops adorned her rounded ears, the luxurious furs around her collar. Like some kind of war maiden sent down from the heavens just for me. When the last guests had walked out the door and the castle staff were scurrying to clean up the post feast mess she turned to me with a strange look in her eye. Before I could either decipher the underlying emotion or even open my mouth she flicked her head in the direction of the guards quarters and began quickly marching towards it, I followed not far behind with a pace somewhere between a jog and a walk.

As we progressed through the stony halls she began loosening her armor, brass buckles unlatching and leather belts coming undone. By the time we reached her quarters the armor was practically falling off of her strong body, only being kept on by the barest of restraints. We reached the door to her quarters and she unlocked it with a key. But just before the door opened she looked back to me with that same strange look, a look I had never seen on her before. What was it? Nervousness? Apprehension? Couldn't be fear could it? Is she having second thoughts about the marriage? Were her parents not as approving of it as I had thought? These unsavory possibilities lingered in the back of my mind as the door creaked open and I followed her inside.

She silently walked over to the armor stand and began placing her shining metal upon it. Knowing what was next I began giddily discarding my formal clothing until my chest was bare. Before unlacing my pants I glanced over to see her struggling to reach a leather strap on the rear of her torso plate. I smiled and got up, it was unlikely I was going to get through tonight without a few new bruises, and if I had to contend with a beast woman with armor plate still on I may very well have to deal with a few broken bones as well. I silently glide behind my steely bride and brush her paw away, then unbuckle the strap. The final plates fell away and she gingerly placed them onto the stand.

Then she just stood there, looking at the ground, back facing me, silent as a mouse. Concerned, I put a hand on her shoulder.

"Something wrong, love?"

She turned to me with that same strange look and finally I was able to identify it in the torch light. It was concern, deep and primordial verging on dread. Never before have I seen her in such a worried state.

"Do you know what I must do tonight, Anon?"

"Is it related to the thing we always did behind the stairwell in the dining hall? The thing that always made you rush me to the baths before others could smell your lewd musk on my body?" I responded with a cheeky grin.

"No, I mean the bite Anon. It's a ritual among beastkin, when a life pairing is made they must bite each other on the shoulder to claim the other as their own. It's a sign of trust, capability, and of the bond between them."

"So we'll bite each other and that's it?" I crossed my arms confidently. "I've had my fair of injuries in the past, one new bite is hardly a concern."

She looked down and nervously shifted her feet before looking back to me.

"It's supposed to be a reciprocal bite. Beastkin have thick fur so even an intentional bite from another beastkin isn't likely to go very far below the skin." She cocks her head, a look of pity in her eyes. "There's no way you're breaking my skin with those little fangs of yours. And with your distinct lack of fur my bite is going to go deep into your flesh. It's going to be very one sided."

I stepped closer and shrugged.

"Love, I don't care how one sided it's going to be. If you must draw my blood then so be it, I shall wear the scars with pride."

She gave a glum smile before continuing.

"It's not just that, it's also these." She pulled her lips back to display her teeth, all four canines painted a shining gold.

“Something wrong with my gift?” I asked.

She sealed her maw.

“No, no, I love your present to me. I know how long it took you to save up enough coin to have my teeth coated in gold, so I could be like the other guards. But that’s just the thing. It seems wrong to cause you pain with something given out of love. It’s…cruel. To hurt someone with their own gift.”

I smile and step in front of her, a hand on her furry cheek.

“No, cruelty would be to deny the one you love that which makes them happy. You said the bite is tradition, would it make you happy to fulfill this tradition with me? The same one your mother did to her mate?”

She responded swiftly, timidness dissipating as her usual self came forward.

“Yes, yes it would. I’ve wanted to claim you since our first meeting. To make us a bonded pair in the eyes of others, the eyes of my packmates, and especially in the eyes of your parents.”

I chuckle and turned my head, giving her a good place to make a bite.

“My deepest apologies for them, they’ve never been appreciative of our relationship. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t exactly like them either.”

She snickered and placed her paws on my shoulders. She opened her maw yet hesitated when it comes to putting mouth to skin. I responded by firmly grasping her muzzle and placing her nose right against my shoulder.

“Come on love, I didn’t spend good coin on all that gold paint just for you to not put it to good use.”

Her eyes flicked to mine, her lips curled into a smile, then teeth kissed flesh. The pain was, well, exactly what I expected. I had been bitten by the occasional stray dog while patrolling the family farm so the feeling of a bite wasn’t foreign, though this one didn’t bring the same sense of panic the ones before did. Not to mention I knew this one wouldn’t bring the same risk of infection, my love took far better care of her mouth than the average beastkin, nevermind a feral dog. When she removed her muzzle from my shoulder I looked down and surveyed her work. Just four marks from her gilded canines, not very deep though they were already drawing blood to the surface. Feeling devious, I fall forward and grip her by the arms, a faked pained whimper escaping my lips. She held my limp body close to her chest in response.

“Love, that…really hurt.” I lied behind gritted teeth.

She gasped.

“Oh Anon, please don’t tell me it was that bad. You must believe me I tried not to cause you undue harm, I didn’t want to injure you so grievously! Please find it in your heart to forgive me my dearest Anon, please?”

She whimpered so pitifully I nearly broke my demeanor, but just a little more acting and I knew her mood would brighten.

“Love?” I softly asked into her chest.

“Yes? Do you need bandages? Perhaps a herbal remedy? Or some wine to dull the pain? Wait I know what you need, I shall fetch the Kings apothecary and get you some leeches. Just stay right here and-“

“No, no love, I don’t need leeches for this injury. Nor bandages or flowery drink. I just…I just need…”

She leans in closer as I trailed off.

“You need what? Just give the order and I will retrieve it with utmost haste.”

“I…need…” I suddenly straightened my posture and stared her in the eyes, the previous pained tone in my voice now replaced with a far livelier one. “I need payback!”

I thrust my head towards her shoulder and bit down with all the strength I could muster. Just like she said, beastkin fur is so thick there’s no way my teeth could penetrate her skin, not that it stopped me from trying. Upon seeing my ruse she brought her head back and bellowed laughter.

“Oh you rascal! Devious little human! You’re an absolute scoundrel Anon!”

In response I suppress my own laughter and double down on my efforts to return her bite with my own.

“Anon, you can stop, it’s not going to work.” She says with a pitiful look.

“Yeshh it will.” I refuted with a mouthful of fur.

“No, it won’t.” She calmly replied.

I growled at her discouragement eliciting more laughter from her. She playfully bopped me on the head.

“You’re a determined one, I’ll give you that. Now get off my shoulder before you swallow even more of my fur.”

I shook my head and grabbed her by the shoulders, turning her so her back was to the bed. I slowly began pushing her towards it and she allowed me to lead her. She turns her head behind her.

“Where are you taking me-oh!” She looked back to me with a raised eyebrow. “You wish to consummate the marriage do you?”

I mumbled an affirmative, teeth still clenching her fur. She chuckled in response and continued to allow me to lead her to the bed. When her knees were nearly touching the mattress I released my mouth from her shoulder and gently pushed her forward. She landed with a soft thud and a hungry look came upon her face.

“You have me cornered on my bridal bed dear Anon. Now all that’s left is to-“

*COUGH COUGH COUGH*

I turned my head and hacked my lungs free of the fur I had accidently swallowed, spitting out what strands remained in my mouth. When I turned to look at her once more her head was cocked and lips pursed.

“Way to ruin the moment, the fire in my loins has nearly died with all your coughing. I told you not to try to return my bite, it’s a fools errand with a humans short teeth.”

I cross my arms defiantly.

“Oh? You think my anatomy to be insufficient to properly penetrate a beastkin such as yourself?”

She licked her gilded fangs and a hungry look returned to her eyes.

”Well, your teeth maybe, but I feel differently about a certain other part of your anatomy.”

“Other part? And what might that be?” I responded with a cheeky smile.

A wicked grin comes upon her face.

“The part that your parents would strongly disapprove of you sticking in me. The one that might lead to a whole bunch of little beastkins and little humans running around if it’s used…properly.”

I leaned onto the bed and crawled forward, my eyes taking in her muscled form lying so readily on the bed. Eventually my nose reached her own and I stared into her eyes.

“Love, you may be far more experienced in the usage of swords, daggers, maces, and all other implements of war than I am, but believe it or not there is one pointy device I have more knowledge than you do in regards to its proper use.”

Her smile grew wider.

“Oh really? Show me.”

And that I did.
