Chapter 2: Comfort
Another chance, another moment in time between two friends who care for each other more than they are both letting on. A comfortable night together turns into a very important moment for someone.
“Ok you can do this. Just hanging out, like old times.” Jason said to himself as he watched the popcorn in the microwave rotate. “Just a simple movie night. Nothing weird. She suggested it and everything, so you don’t even look like a weirdo inviting her over.” As the microwave beeped he pushed the door release and poured the popcorn into a large bowl. He took a deep breath and brought the popcorn to his room, setting it on the coffee table in front of the couch. He glanced over the spread for the night. Popcorn, a bag of miscellaneous candy, the projector, and the laptop the pair could stream movies from. The cables hadn’t been plugged in properly yet but before
After a few more moments of mumbling to himself Jason heard the doorbell ring. He shuffled back down the hallway and opened up the door. Jennifer stood smiling and holding out a six pack of bottled sodas. “JAY!” she exclaimed as she awkwardly danced on his doorstep. “I smell the popcorn, it better have the extra butter or I’m going to beat your ass.” Jennifer moved around him and made her way to the fridge. She leaned down to place the drinks in the fridge and Jason kept himself turned away. This was just a normal hangout, two friends celebrating their mutual escape from the confines of the public school system. He wouldn’t get caught staring at her ass and make it weird.
Padded fingers caught his vision as he focused onto Jennifer waving her hand in front of him. “Earth to Jason. Did finals melt your brain or something? Come on! Shouldn’t you be happier being free for the first time in our lives!? We have the entire night to watch a shitton of movies and just relax." Her mood was infectious, the big grin plastered onto her snout, the small shuffle of her feet back and forth as she grabbed ahold of his hand. Jason couldn’t help but smile dumbly being dragged along by her. “Now come on, we have to start with one of those kung-fu movies! Then we do a scary one, that’s the rule!” She tugged him along back to his room. As the door shut and the light’s were turned off a small panic set into Jason.
He watched Jennifer hop over the couch in front of the coffee table and begin munching on popcorn. His brain was clouded by a thousand tiny alarms going off. He couldn’t let her see how offput he was. She was going to notice him not acting the same. As she pulled up a streaming service on the laptop on the coffee table Jason grabbed the door handle and felt sick.
“Alright, Which of these sounds-” she said, turning around to face him. She saw him looking down at the floor and shaking slightly. She hopped over the couch and set her hand on Jason’s shoulder. “Hey Jay, are you alright? What’s wrong?” her voice was soft and laced with concern. Jason shook his head and stood up straight, his movements rigid.
“Yeah, yeah. I just need a minute. I’m gonna go to the bathroom.” he muttered as he peeled himself away from the room. He walked into the bathroom and shut the door. His hand wrapped onto the faucet handle and he took long deep breaths. “Pull yourself together Jason. She doesn’t deserve this.” he said softly. He listened to the water running down the drain and placed his hands under the running water and felt the water shift from cool to warm. He let it pool in his hands before splashing a healthy amount onto his face. With a few more drags of air into his body he felt the panic start to subside. He dried his face on the towel, feeling the cloth scrub over his skin. A thought wormed its way in: the feeling of Jennifer’s fur rubbed against his cheek. He shook his head hard this time, he couldn’t spiral again.
He opened the door to the bathroom and made his way back to the kitchen, grabbing a glass and pouring himself some juice. He grabbed two of the sodas from the pack as well and carted this all back to his room. As the door creaked open he saw Jennifer's golden gaze turn away from the door and focus back onto the laptop. Jason walked around the couch and set the drinks down on the table in front of the two. Jennifer was focusing on the screen and cables as she tried to get the projector set up properly. Her eyes stayed focused but he could tell with the small twitches of her tail and the slight tilt of her head towards him that she was worried.
“Sorry, I kinda freaked out there for a moment.” he said as he took a sip of his juice. He heard a small huff from Jennifer and as he turned his head back to her their gazes met. Her face was much closer now and he felt a heat rise to his cheeks.
“That was pretty bad, are you sure you’re okay?” she hesitated before touching him. The warmth of her padded palms against his skin gave him a moment of clarity. He set down his juice and smiled softly, then nodded as he laid his hand over hers.
“Yeah. Thanks. I’m sorry for worrying you. I’m alright now.” he let his hand linger for a moment, enjoying the feel of her fur. He gave a small pat to her hand and pointed toward the now functioning projector. “Now come on, we gotta watch-” he said as he clicked the trackpad a couple times, picking one of his favorite martial arts movies. “This one!” Jennifer glanced at him for a moment before nodding. He sat back against the couch and felt a tickle against his right arm as the screen went black.
Jennifer’s tail sat nestled between them, gently brushing against his arm. Jason felt the urge to move but the soft fur warming him very quickly sapped that urge away. His breathing relaxed as he melted into the couch. He felt the warmth from her tail, backing music from the movie and a comfort that washed over his being. As harrowing as it seemed to start out, this is exactly what he needed: A night of relaxation with his best friend, a ritual conducted for many years up to this point and hopefully would continue for many years after this. As the action kicked up on the screen Jason and Jennifer sat in comfortable silence enjoying each other's company.
An alien horror movie came next, then a superhero movie, then a direct-to-dvd horror movie. The pair laughed at the cheesy effects and horrid dialogue as the main character stood atop a dead chainsaw maniac. The ending sting of an eyeball opening on a presumed dead body had Jennifer laying over Jason unable to do anything but guffaw loudly.
As the credits rolled Jennifer kept her head in Jason’s lap still trying to stifle giggles every few seconds. Jason had a hand on her head trying to hold back laughs as well as to not drag both of them back into a fit. Jason’s hand idly rubbed back and forth against her soft fur, scratching softly against her scalp. Jennifer smiled and closed her eyes. After a few more seconds of this Jennifer piped up.
“That feels really nice.” she said softly. Jason stopped his ministrations, the moment coming back to him. He brought his hand off her head and set it against the couch away from her. She opened one of her eyes and smirked up at him. “Aw, I was actually enjoying that, you know?” Jason laughed softly and leaned forward to mess with the laptop.
“Hey, maybe we can find something online to watch now? Wind down from the movies?” Jason said, nervousness in his voice. Jennifer rolled her eyes and sat up, huffing slightly.
“Sure, whatcha got?” she said scooching next to him and perusing Youtube with him. After a few minutes they found a video they both agreed looked interesting and sat back. Not long after that the comparatively low energy youtube video had the pair dozing off next to each other on the couch.
After about an hour Jason awoke slowly, feeling cozy. He idly ran his hand over the blanket in his lap before feeling soft bristles of fur gliding through his palm. Panic set in as he looked down to see Jennifer’s tail resting over his lap. He felt a movement against his shoulder and looked over to see her head resting against him. Her breathing was soft and even, eyes shut, and a small smile was prevalent on her snout as she gently nuzzled into him.
So much of him was telling him to try and move, this was too close. She was too close. She was comfortable and her tail was so soft. Was this really so bad? He glanced at her again. She looked happy, and it made him happy to see that. Doubts and fear crept into that image quickly as he didn’t want her to not be there. What if they didn’t work? What if people thought it was weird? What if he lost her? Jason crossed his hands over his chest as he tried to stop himself from shaking. He took a deep breath and tried to focus on anything but that.
His thoughts drifted to lazy afternoons curled up with Jennifer on the couch, the two just enjoying each other's presence. Was it much different than what they had been doing for the last nine years? Jason felt the panic begin to die out as the warmth from Jennifer continued to comfort him. It all finally subsided and he was brought back into the moment he watched as Jennifer gave a small yawn and shifted her head slightly.
“Why do you have to be so cute?” he mumbled to himself. He decided to just try and get some sleep. Any big movements he made would disturb Jennifer, he couldn’t do that to his best friend. He let go of his doubts and worries and melted back into the couch. Soon enough with a furry tail over his lap and his mind drifting to a happier place Jason finally went back to sleep.
‘Cute huh?’ Jennifer thought to herself as she opened one eye and peeked upwards to see Jason breathing softly once more. A small grin spread over her snout and she had to hold her breath to suppress a giggle. ‘That explains so much.’ She gently nuzzled her head into his shoulder and laid her hand over his. She imagined Jason panicking about trying to hold her hand while they slept. The thought gave her a sense of both contentment and mischievous glee. She fell back into her own slumber, thinking of how nice it would be to actually hold hands sometime.
