-Chapter IV-
Jim woke up slowly, eyes blinking in an attempt to clear the drowsiness that came with deep sleep. He hadn't slept that good in ages, as his eyes focused he realized why. His vision was filled with Salines white chest fur. He carefully extracted himself from her embrace, rolled onto his back and glanced towards the clock.
His eyes immediately shot open when he saw the time. “How the hell did I sleep so late" He knew the answer but was too embarrassed to admit it.
As quietly as he could, Jim slipped into his engineering RIG and made his way into the kitchen. He took a seat at one of the displays, which greeted him with their familiar orange glow, and began checking the bases systems, in case something happened over night.
Everything seemed to be in order, as Jim expected, except one strange anomaly. He found multiple pending transmissions that were waiting to be sent out, from John.
Curious to why, though he could guess they were about his wife, Jim got up and made his way to John's room. He knocked on the door a few times but entered anyway after no response was heard. As he crossed the threshold he noticed John sitting at his desk, scrolling through a display.
“Hey John, whatcha doin." He asked John.
“I'm trying to send out a transmission to my wife." He responded before slamming his fist against the desk. “But it's not FUCKING working!"
“Hey, hey take it easy man." Jim began, resting a hand on John's shoulder. “You just gotta wait for the arrays to line up."
“How long will that take…" John muttered, resting his head in his hands. “I've been trying all night."
“Not sure, just get some rest and they'll be sent by time you wake up." Jim replied, guiding John towards the bed. “Besides I've gotta take Saline out and try to find her village, so you'll have the base to yourself. Maybe even for a few days."
“Alright, thanks man." John said. “And good luck."
“Thanks." Jim replied, exiting John's room.
With that taken care of Jim could now focus on preparing for today's adventure. First off, wake Saline and get her some breakfast-brunch more like it. Then begin packing some supplies, food, water and maybe some extra ammo. Although he hoped he wouldn't have to use the guns anyway, they more of a worst case scenario option.
He opened the door leading to his room and made his way to the bed. Where Saline still lay, he felt bad for waking her but he had to get her home. If CEC found out he was hosting some alien in one of their facilities...let's just say it wouldn't end well.
He quietly made his way over to Saline but paused right before he shook her shoulder. A devious plan formed in his head and he just had to try it. Getting as far away as he could, he deployed his helmet, hoping the clanking wouldn't wake her. Luckily, it didn't and Jim could initiate part two of his plan. Creeping up, he put his ominous visor right up to her face.
He then laid his hand on her shoulder and gently shook, saying her name softly to try and rouse her. Her eyes opened slowly before blinking a few times. They then locked straight onto Jim and opened WIDE.
She made a strange yapping sound and scrambled backwards, almost falling off the bed in the process. Thus sending Jim into a fit of laughter, he fell onto his back and clutched his stomach. Saline, after realizing what happened, couldn't help but join in.
“My gods, you scared the life out of me." She said, rubbing the top of her snout. “You little trickster."
“Ohh man, you shoulda…" He started, retracting his helmet. “You shoulda seen the look on your face-"
He was cut short when Saline pounced him, taking him to the ground and pinning him underneath her weight. She then began licking at his face profusely, as her way of payback.
“Ack! Mercy-puh!" Jim began, but was promptly cut of with more licking.
Luckily for him she stopped after a few more licks. She gazed down at him with a large smile etched across her features, displaying her teeth as she gave him one last lick before rolling off of him. Standing to her full height, she gave a long exhale as she stretched her body.
Jim couldn't help but stare at her, standing there naked, well as naked as you could get covered in fur. Despite being alien… and covered in fur, she still had nice curves you would find on a human lady. He couldn't lie, he did find her body attractive…
“God, it hasn't been that long…" He thought, shaking his head as he made his way to his feet. Making sure to wipe the saliva off his face as well. “That was excessive."
“I think it was funny." She replied, smiling at him again.
“Touché." He mumbled. “Anyway… we have uhh… a lot of work to do today."
“Do we?" She asked, walking over to where she left her sash and tieing it around her waist.
“Yup, gotta prep the shuttle and pack some supplies." He started, leading her out into the kitchen.
Saline sat herself at the table, watching as Jim retrieved one of the 'rations' and set it down on the counter. He then grabbed a glass which he filled up with water and brought it over to her before leaving again.
Though she enjoyed Jim's company, she desperately wanted to make sure her family was ok. So once Jim made his way back, she wasted no time chowing down on the meal he gave her.
“We don't have to do much." Jim began, taking a seat next to her. “Pack a couple days worth of food and water, just in case. I don't think we need anything else, really."
“What will you do after you drop me off." Saline asked.
“Well, I was hoping, once we spot your village I would land a ways away. So I don't scare them with my magical flying machine. Then have you just walk home… why?" He responded.
Jim wasn't sure they would be more scared of him, or him of them. Being stared at by hundreds of predatory eyes was sure to have a toll on someone's nerves. Thought in their eyes he probably looked like some robot, the blank expression his visor gave off.
“You wouldn't stay?" She questioned, crumpling up what was left of her meal into a neat ball. “In my culture, the generosity you showed me could not go repaid."
“Pshh, don't worry about it." He replied with a shrug. “Besides it wasn't your choice you had to leave your village."
“Nor was it yours to save me." She stated, giving him a stare that told him she wasn't going to back down.
“Fine, fine. I'll stay for a day…" He responded, receiving the same stare. “Ok, two. Three max."
She responded with a smile, flicking her tongue across his face. In response, he jerked back before wiping at his face.
“I thought you were done with the licking." He asked her. “Or do I just have to wear my helmet all the time now."
She narrowed her eyes as her smile faded. “You wouldn't dare. I'll rip that tin can off you head."
“Ok, nevermind. Helmet stays off." He responded, quickly retracting his statement. “Ok then… let's get packin."
As Jim stood from the table, Saline quickly followed suit. She took a moment to throw her wrapper into the trash before meeting back up with him as he stood by a cabinet.
“Let's see… one of those, couple of these…" He mumbled, packing them in a nearby crate. “Don't worry about the guns, I have them in my rig."
“Uhh, alright…" She replied, adding to the list of strange things about his kind.
“Is there anything you need to bring?" He asked
“Not really." She responded, before remembering her robe. “Oh, I almost forgot. My robe is still in your room."
“Oh yea, go ahead and grab it." He started. “I'm going to take this to the shuttle, meet me on the landing pad."
“Ok." She started, walking back towards Jim's room.
Jim's room… the place where her life was saved. The place where she was nurtured back to life out of pure generosity. The place where she spent the previous night comfortably snuggled up to Jim. That was the first time since she was a cub that she slept with someone, besides her parents.
She would definitely miss this place. Perhaps she could come visit once and awhile.

Jim sat idle in the pilot's seat of the shuttle, going over a pre-flight check before they departed. He expected Saline to arrive soon and wanted to make sure everything was running smoothly for their flight. The flight check didn't take long, since the shuttle wasn't used since they flew it down here. The only thing he had to check was fuel really.
Deciding he would wait outside, Jim got up from his chair and made his way out. This would also give him some time to quickly go over the shuttle's exterior.
Aside from dust, there was not much else Jim could spot on the exterior. He did take some time to wipe off the CEC emblem for no reason whatsoever. It's not like anyone would understand, or care, what they meant. Luckily, before he could completely bore himself, he spotted Saline making her way up the stairs.
“You made it." He stated. “What took you so long?"
“I was thinking, is their anyway we could…" She started. “That thing you did with Mary, what did you call it."
“When I called her?" He asked.
“...Yes." She responded, mentally slapping herself on how oblivious she was. “Is there anyway we could do that after you leave."
“Hmm, yea the shuttle should have a PCD somewhere." He said, looking back towards the shuttle.
“A what?" She asked.
“Oh sorry, portable communication device." He responded. “Just like what I used but smaller."
“Ah, ok…" She mumbled.
“Don't worry, I'll show you how to use it." He replied to her. “Anyway, if you're ready we can load up and I'll look for it."
“Sure." She replied with a smile.
As she followed him in, she was once again left speechless as she tried to take everything in. They passed by multiple holo displays as he led her to an area that was all glass. There were two seats, he took the left one, and once she set down her robe she took the right.
“That chair might be a little awkward since it wasn't made for people with tails." He started, typing away at the holo screen.
“Yes, I see that." She mumbled, shifting around until she ended up sitting with her tail between her legs.
“Alright, when we start just… don't touch anything." He said slowly. “I would give you a lesson on how to fly this, but it's a little more complex than a gun."
“I can tell." She replied, observing everything while keeping her hands in her lap.
All of a sudden Saline felt everything around her begin to vibrate, accompanied by a muffled hum coming from the back of the shuttle.
“Ready?" Jim asked, to which she nodded. “Ok, 3...2...1. Here we go."
At first she didn't notice anything, but when she looked out of the cockpit she noticed the ground getting farther away. Then she felt her stomach drop.
“Are we…?" She asked, looking out at the sandy world.
“Flying, yup." He said with a smile. “I forgot to ask… are you afraid of heights?"
“This is amazing!" She declared, looking towards him and giving a grin.
“I'll take that as a no then." He mumbled. “I'm gonna gain some altitude and you tell me if you spot anything familiar."
“Ok, lets see." She said, turning her head out to look over the vast desert.
Once they reached an acceptable height Jim began slowly rotate the ship so they got a 360 view. And as far as Jim could tell, there wasn't squat out here.
“Uhh, well I don't see anything." Jim stated, still looking out the cockpit. “Is there some sort of landmark we could go off of?"
“If we find Gold Ring then all we would have to do is head south." She said with a sigh.
“Gold Ring… what is that?" He asked.
“It's the capital of Tal, a very large city." She replied. “My village was a ways south of it."
“Alright, then it looks like we'll have to do some good old fashioned recon." Jim uttered, taking control of the shuttle and gently leading it north. And if they didn't find anything they would go south.
Jim was starting to get annoyed by the bland environment they were flying through. Though Jim had seen a few dust ball planets during his time serving with the CEC. He never had the misfortune to get up close and personal with them.
Lucky, Saline was there to save him from the clutches of boredom.
“There! I think I see it." She finally said.
“Huh, what… where?" He asked.
“There!" She emphasized by pointing her claw out of the canopy.
“Eh… oh I see it now." He stated, correcting the flight path so they headed directly for it. “And from there south. I don't want to get to close, I take it these people have never seen or heard one of these pass over before…"
“That would probably be a good idea." She said to him.
After they passed the city, which Jim was very impressed by, they flew south. As they did Jim began to pick up on some of the things Saline talked about before. Like the river she said her village was situated by, It seemed to run on forever through the expanse of the desert.
“I think we're close." She stated, grin stretched across her features.
“Alright, I've got my eyes peeled-" He began.
“THERE!" She practically shouted.
Jim again followed her extended arm and in fact spotted a small gathering of houses along the river. He slowly started to descend while also bringing the shuttle close, but not too close, to the village. Once he deemed it fit he landed the shuttle, he just hoped he wouldn't have to shoot anyone. He could already make out a few figures cautiously approaching.
“I think it would be best of you went first." Jim said slowly.
Salines blue eyes glanced over at him for a moment, evident that she agreed with him. She watched him rise from his chair and eagerly followed suit. The shuttle was ominously quiet since Jim shut the engines off, which didn't helped at all with Jim's nervousness.
“Here we go." He muttered.
