Kid to Kit
I had an idea where there was a world where all humans grew up to be like their anthro animal parents. So, I wondered what part of the transition would be like. Please enjoy!
Katya perked her foxy ears. Something stirred in the early morning. It wasn’t the mice in the rafters. Neither was it the newspaper being flung onto the driveway every Sunday. She swore the sound was a voice. A young voice. The young peep of her daughter. She canted and tilted the black tips, trying to hear them over the fuzzing pops of dish soap on her hands. Or paws. She wasn’t sure what the modern world thought they should be named anymore.
She listened once more, but nothing brought itself out of the silence that now pervaded the house.
"Illyana, dear? What's happening?"
The silence stretched for a little too long. Katya shook her hands over the sink to flush as much as she could out of the fur before grabbing a teatowel to dry the rest of the way. She had twenty things going on in her head as she stepped down from the footstool, fox tail swishing behind her.
"Illyana? Sweet? Is something wrong?"
The fox trodded up the stairs one step at a time, her claws gently pressing into the carpet as she grew concerned. Forty things now jumped around in her mind, all trying to petition their importance. She turned around on the landing to see the little human running towards her, with rosy cheeks, an infectious smile, and a moderate diastema.
"My eyes! Mommy, my eyes!"
Katya slung the damp teatowel over her shoulder, furrowing her brow as she stood just a little shorter than the twelve-year-old human. She looked discerningly into the eyes.
She knew Illyana had green eyes, very vibrant ones, she had been told. Unfortunately, fox eyes could barely tell the difference between that and an orange neon sign, but she did see something.
The pupil had a slightly oblong look, and a very faint ring on its perimeter seemed more vibrant than before.
Katya smiled, a foxy grin stretching across her muzzle as she hugged her daughter. "Sweety! This is fantastic. When did you find out?"
"This morning! I saw the little yellow on it. I'm going get a black nose like you soon."
Katya hugged her daughter in a tight squeeze. "Oh sweet, this is fantastic news. That must be why your tooth is getting loose. Those little sharp fangs will grow in, and your smile will be wonderful. Does dad know?"
"Nup!" Illyana giggled, fiddling with her hands and relishing in the attention. "I'm going to surprise him when he gets home."
Katya kissed her daughter several times on the neck, making her daughter giggle and squirm as she nuzzled a cold nose in the crook of the neck. "Surprise him, I will pretend I don't know. Now brush your teeth; your breath is awful."
Illyana kissed Katya back after the giggle fit. "M'kay! Love you.”
