The final chapter
Chapter 23-Two days later
We were both in the park Luna was wearing shorts and a shirt that didn't cover her belly or her arms and her scarf black one, giving stark contrast on her snow-white fur, but it went well with her red eyes. I was wearing what I always wore in summer pans and a tee shirt, we were both lying in the slope of a hill it was mid-day, Luna was just looking up at the sky I was resting in the crook of her elbow reading a book. The same one I had been reading before the beginning of this insane journey, Luna’s fur was soft and comforting, she was just laying on her back her knees drawn up and her paws and ankles aligned.
‘So, what have you been up to?’ I asked
‘Not much the war is over so living, I know it sounds strange, but I'm just not used to have to motivate myself to do things, there's no enemy and I just don’t know what to do.’
I didn't exactly know what to say, ‘It will be fine you; we will get through this together,’ I put a reassuring hand on her forearm. gently rubbing her arm then we lapsed into a comfortable silence.
After some time, Luna spoke, ‘Farren?’
‘Yes?’ I said, looking up at Luna her eyes, they showed an emotion that I didn't recognise initially. Embarrassment and doubt.
‘Farren I think I um’ even though she was stammering she didn't take her eyes off me; she didn't break contact.
‘We have known each other for a while’ I said still rubbing her arm softly, ‘and we have been through some shit together but I don’t want you competing with a memory, just give me some time one day Luna just not today it’s not fair on you, but one day.’
Luna didn't say anything for some time.
‘Look Luna I’m-’
I was interpreted by her sweeping up in a bear hug her arms around me pushing me into her stomach fur and her chest, I managed to get my arms free and embrace her back holding on to her soft white fur ‘but for now, I said into her chest let’s just be friends, good friends.’
Luna let go of me and moved up slightly and leaned my head on her chest.
‘You have the best pillows’ I said, ‘there extra big.’
Luna looked out at me with a bemused smile, 'thought we were not going to do the whole sherbang.’
‘Well yes, but I still need snuggles.’
Luna wrapped an arm around me and leaned forward no nuzzle me, ‘so if I snuggle you will you read to me?’
‘Sure’ I smiled ‘I think you will love this one.’
