“Are you alright?" I heard a voice speak, my eyes not opening, my body cold. “Come now, your vital signs are similar to when you are conscious, you must be able to respond." The voice added, its tone clearer, electronic almost. Unfamiliar… No… I heard it recently…
“Nggh…" I groaned aloud, attempting to form words to no avail as a soft, shocking hand pressed down firmly against my chest. “Ease… You survived an implantation… Not many can do so and wake up so early." I heard, attempting to open my eyes; meeting blinding light and blurriness. “W-wha?" I asked, the world around me still blurry as I tried my best to move my body to no avail, a static fuzziness running all through my arms and legs.
The lights above slowly faded before I came face to face with the entity that I had seen earlier in a dark room. They were the only… Thing that I could see, aside from my chest and arms. Its body glowed faintly in the dark room, the flame in its head burning brightly.
“Excellent…. Your hippocampus seems to have successfully reworked the electrical signals back through most of their original pathways. You may have some memory loss for a short period of time, but for the time being, I have downloaded a live copy of your memories, thoughts and perceptions of the current time. I have been assigned to watch over you, for security reasons both for and against your person." It spoke, each word flaring its being to life as the room around it lit up even more.
I opened my mouth to start to speak up before it interrupted me. “I understand that you have many questions, and are confused at your current situation, but those can wait for the moment. What you must understand immediately is that I am part of you now, so my interests are yours. It is imperative that you trust me with decisions when I ask you to make them, do you understand?" it informed me, my mind quickly fluttering back and forth in confusion for several moments as I looked at its form, nodding slowly.
It was the first living thing other than the admiral that spoke anything I understood. Given what's happened in the past… Fuck, I've even lost track of time. “…Don't have much of an option, do I?" I asked, wincing as I gathered my strength, slowly sitting up and using my arms to support me. “Unless your option is to blindly traverse through the events that will unfold in the future, you have no other option." It informed me as the door was opened up, the lights flicking on as two masked reptilian guards wearing heavy armor, carrying rifles walked in, speaking in a tongue foreign to me that slowly transferred to static before formally being translated into common tongues.
“Has his Zannok been implanted?" one spoke, turning his head to the taller of the scaled creatures. The second held up some device to me and pressed it down, a beam of red light scanning over the half of the room that I was contained in, the illuminated creature next to me flashing several times in a red response. “Yep. There he is. Interesting how this… Thing managed to wake up so early with it." It spoke, setting the device onto his side before stepping forward and looking at the creature next to me. “You have his translator on?" he spoke in a harsh tone, stopping at the end of my restrained bed.
“Affirmative. Subject has been implanted successfully and vital signs nominal. I do not suggest moving the subject for some time as his body is still recovering from the twenty fractures that he sustained." It responded in a metallic voice, the room echoing the sound throughout.
The taller scaled creature walked to my side, taking a firm grip of my skull as he turned it towards his own—his violet eyes peering down into my own, into my very mind it felt like. “You are unnerving him, you should know. Cooperation and my ability to work with his mind is dependent on a relatively calm attitude." The metallic voice sounded, my eyes now getting a fuller grasp on the red creature that was near me.
Its body was unlike much that I had seen before—a being of energy, its form translucent but not still as the very edges of it were vibrating sharply, making it appear like it had to constantly work to keep its form. Upon what I presumed its head would be were a set of parallel yellow dots, one atop another on the left side of its face. I felt my heartbeat increase even further as I was barraged by banter between the three beings.
My body fidgeted, my instincts telling me that in the fight or flight response, it had to do something—the restraints against me had other things in mind; even more so, there was a soft, soothing voice that reflected the being of energy that stood near me. Zannok… I thought they had said. Unknown name to an unknown being that disturbed me, but kept a calming influence over my form.
Soon after, I was moved out by the duo, the wheels on the bottom extending upwards as they collided with the ceiling, bolts locking the wheels in place before my bed moved on its own: out the door, over the edge of the railing, through the building—all the while, the red creature floated next to me, almost ethereally.
“Fret not. As long as you speak the truth, I promise, they won't harm you." It spoke. I didn't know how to respond, to be honest. Here I was in a foreign environment, in foreign space, in a foreign galaxy perhaps, and I was to trust this thing that I presume to be part of me at this point. So I did the best I could, mustering the strength to lift my arm and give a thumbs up.
The two yellow slits narrowed themselves as I felt a light buzzing in my brain for a few moments. Slowly, it responded by morphing one of its sharp, static-like edges of arms into a replica of my hand, giving a thumb up before dissipating back into its previous form.
Time passed as we continued down the building. I couldn't think of questions to ask, couldn't come up with words to say. It wasn't until we stopped in a dimly lit area that an intercom flared to life; six lit silhouettes appearing in a semi-circle around me. As their voices spoke aloud, the soft buzzing in my head continued on.
“Zannok, confirm that you are implanted within Subject E0931-2." A feminine voice translated out to. “Yes ma'am. Implanted, and translating currently. Please keep questioning to non-invasive measures while his body is recovering. I cannot confirm true answers or proclaim false ones if he is in a panicked state." The metallic voice rang out again, almost as if its entire form shook while it spoke.
“Good. We're in need of answers, so we'll have to make do with possible falsities." Another voice responded in a deep masculine tone. “Primarily, what the hell is it, and how is it affiliated with E0931-11?" it finished, before the creature turned to me, its golden gaze peering into my mind. “Answer truthfully. Don't worry, I'm on your side." It spoke, making the thumbs up that I made earlier to try and reassure me.
Inhaling slowly, I told them the story with as little detail as I could, trying to be cooperative but cautious. Dozens upon dozens of questions were barraged upon me, and I answered to the best of my ability, not knowing their reasoning as to why they would ask me the most basic of questions about my species, location, numbers.
Frankly, by the end, the Zannok had to step in, answering in shorter words than I could, more clearly. “One final question—and please, don't give us half-assed answer like you have with the rest of our queries." The feminine voice spoke up.
“Do you know what the other 'Human' has done?"
I stopped, paused, the gears in my head grinding as I tried my best to comprehend, understand the gravity of the situation. Looking over to the Zannok, I spoke to it, “No. He was hailed as a hero of a group of ten on my home world."
“Earth, you mean?" one masculine voice spoke up, the one to my most right position. “Yes, Earth. Terra." I responded, continuing, “They were the first that approached the anomaly in our space before vanishing. A lot of data was sent to home and we were able to accelerate our space-faring technology by about three or four decades in a matter of years." The Zannok spoke up, clarifying the time length in their form.
“Interesting." The feminine voice spoke, adding, “Well, let me tell you why we are so cautious about you and your kind." Before she had time to continue, the entire room shook from side to side as loud explosions sounded out. The silhouettes fizzed for several moments before fading away. My bed quickly fell to the floor, the latch that was holding it up releasing.
With a loud slam, my restraints broke off from my bed as it toppled to its side, my crippled body rolling around onto the cold, steel floor, the bed rolling atop me. Silence blared throughout the room for what felt like minutes, hours. My eyes closed as my vision blurred, the last sight to hold them was the red glowing being kneeling in front of me, placing its hand on my head.
As my surroundings shook once more, I gasped, my body heating up rapidly, energy coursing in my veins, pulsating through my nerves. Slamming my hands down against the floor, I easily pushed the bed off of me, sending it off a fair distance.
Looking down, I noticed that my body wasn't exactly mine alone anymore as the only thing that wasn't coursing in a radiant light of red was everything above my neck. “Time to go." The metallic voice spoke, adding, “You control your walk, I'll keep your body from collapsing. If you die, I die—that's how this relationship essentially works."
Pausing for a few moments, I spoke, “Well, I suppose I have no option other than to trust you at this point. Thanks." Looking around, the dark room seemed almost inescapable to me, even the dimly lit areas were screens. I had come in from above, I knew that much, but as I was about to speak up, a glistening red visor covered my head, giving me a general idea of how the room looked in a pure redscaled light. Nodding, I found a series of equipment that lined the walls, allowing me to slowly make my way up.
As I stepped on the first table, I fell off, the shaking of my surroundings making my balance more than unstable. “What is going on, an earthquake?" I half yelled, getting on top of it again before grasping onto a series of mechanical tools, swinging from one to another with relative ease. This casing felt great, compared to normal movement!
“We're still in space. Communications uplinks inform me that the battleship is under attack." It spoke to me, as I managed to work my way to the hatch, climbing up into it and moving out to the platform where dozens of people were running around in a panic—some armed, some unarmed.
“Barakov…" I spoke under my breath, adding, “Tell me, what has he been doing here? How the hell did he get command of so many robots?" I tried to swell up in rage, bringing my tone up and attempting to get slightly frustrated by the goings on to no avail. It seemed that the creature had an effect on my mood overall—a mastery of the grip of it too.
“He… Well…" it spoke to me, pausing. “To make a long series of stories short, we captured the entire crew and attempted to interrogate them, thinking they were Chameleo spies—I'll tell you later who those are—and Barakov escaped, managing to free an AI core—a dangerous thing—and it repaid him in kind by making him the grand leader of their rebellion." It continued on.
Just as I was about to speak, three bullets whizzed past my side, one hitting my chest. The red creature that was giving me information fizzed for several moments before dropping the bullet to the ground half-melted. It felt like a punch to my chest though as I fell to my knees, coughing up blood. Looking up to see who shot, I stared down the barrel of a rifle.
