I was a average boy before the collapse, i had to go school, complete chores around our apartment and of course, play with the neighborhood kids. I felt grateful to be apart of the citadel, all of us were. We call them citadels due to the fact that they contain a huge portion of the human population. Over million kilometers in diameter, they held a good chunk of territory on the planet.
Three of them were built over the course of a thousand years, each one were slightly different from the other, different languages and cultures flourish with the help of the surrounding geographic landscape and weather. I lived in the alpha citadel, the very first one built by our ancestors. The beastmen however, controlled everything else. They lived in small clusters of tribes or clans, these tribes had their own unique species inhabitanting them. Of course i don't have to tell you that.
Back then, i was completely ignorant of the world around me, i cared little for politics or the economy. None of that mattered as long as i was happy, our leaders will always protect us from the 'savages' i thought. It was painful to remember for some reason, when my way of life will take a violent shift from what i was accustomed to. When humanity's might will be tested.
All of my friend's parents was talking about it: wolven tribes from the south declared war on the our sister Citadel: beta. They said that a attack was closely approaching I wasn't really worried, our society was militaristic to its core, we needed to be if our enemies were twice as strong and fast than us. Being Surrounded by potential threats would make anyone want to prepare for the unexpected. It's the reason why it was required for kids from middle school on up take basic combat training. Our government wanted to make sure that they had battle ready troops at a moments notice. Truth be told, no one was expecting what happened next.
At first, they held their own but then, beta's army was quickly pushed back in a matter of days. the beastmen soon were at the beta's door. Our technology and weaponry was light years ahead and yet, they pushed through. I sat there on the couch, looking at the news anchors expression when she read from her notes, a mixture of emotions mashed together in one. “ we just received reports t-that Citadel beta has fallen." The screen changed to that of a camera placed high atop of a building somewhere in the city, I felt my heart sink as it showed everything engulfed in flames. “ it is unknown what the death toll is to be exact but our estimates suggest that it ranges into the millions." the news lady said, i could easily see that she was disturbed, we all were! Not only were the wolves able to repeal and defeat beta's military but also breach her walls. None of it made sense to me, i asked my mom if the same thing would happen to us. “Of course not honey, the dogs were just lucky." She reassured me, she was a true patriot at heart, serving in the armed forces for ten years before going on to be a pilot. That's where she met my dad and fell in love with him.
The sound of someone knocking on our front door briefly torn us away our conversation. Dad went to go answer it and was greeted by a large man in uniform. “Good morning captain, i hate to blunt but you and your wife are needed in times of crisis. By order of the prime minister and her majesty, you are to be deployed immediately you will be sent....." The man droned on as if he done this a thousand times before. my father simply nod before asking for time to pack. The man agreed and walked down the stepped away from our door and towards the next building, to repeat the process to the next family. Both my parents knew that this day was coming and were ready from the start, all i did was silently watch them grab some clothes and their own uniform. “Listen son, me and your father are gone for awhile. I need you to take care of the place while we are gone." My mother said to me. “When will you be you be back?" I asked her, my voice was trembling from the amount of emotions surging through me. She kissed me on the cheek and stared deeply into my eyes. I remembered what was said but for the life of me, i can't remember what she looked like, all i saw was a faceless void.
“I promise we will be back in a week or less. I better see this place spotless too when we get back and no inviting your friends over." She said with that soft smile, i couldn't help but laugh, her sense of humor needed some work. My mother knew i was more than capable of taking care of myself. “ i love you sweetie, we'll be back soon." With that, they shut the front door behind them with a click, That was the last time i saw them alive.
Three weeks had past and my parents still haven't returned. They made a promise that i knew was impossible to keep, all thanks to this war. News quickly broke out that omega Citadel was overruned and had no choice but to use a couple flash bombs on itself to prevent the beastmen from advancing any further. In a instant, half the world's human population was gone all of thoes poor souls never saw it coming. To this day, i find it hard to believe that they would go as far as vaporizing their own citizens, i guess death is better than having it taken by someone else. I tried to keep my mind off the current situation by watching some tv but all of the channels were offline, leaving the national broadcast network watchable.
“This is not a drill, we are implementing a emergency draft by order of the prime minister. All residents from ages ten and up must report to your local national guard to receive your service weapon and equipment. This is not a drill, we are facing a possible extinction level event. The Citadel must survive at all cost!" the television repeated the message over again until i eventually turned it off. Things were getting worse by the second, extinction? How did we lose so much in such a short amount of time? This must have been some sort of nightmare that i needed to wake up from but it was nothing more than wishful thinking now that i look back on it.
Banging could be heard from front door, it was steady but aggressive, as if someone wanted to get in real badly. I wasn't supposed to open doors for strangers but a thought crossed my mind that it was my parents returning, more wishful thinking. I flung open the door to be greeted by someone entirely different, it was the large uniform man from before. “Good evening son. umm, do you know why i am here?"
