Echoes Chapter 5
Doctor Terra Brooks begins looking into the ever growing cases of simple, but painful, migraines, as well as the connection they may have to the Homicide and Assault cases on the rise. Her higher ups believe there is a coincidence, however they are also choosing to be ignorant.
Chapter 5
Date: April 2, 2741
"Chief Medical Officer's Log. There has been a string of incidents over the last few days. Individuals are coming in more frequently reporting migraines and nausea. During that time there have been at least two homicides and five assaults. The issue with these homicides and assaults is that the individuals who did them have no history of aggression, no criminal backgrounds in those manors, nothing. My staff are working long hours trying to figure out if this is some kind of new virus that is going around or if, possibly, the Lothians may have placed a beacon that somehow causes these issues. I have no real evidence to link the Homicides and Assaults with the migraines and nausea. No scientific principle or theory, but a hunch. I have contacted the planet's administration to see if maybe they were seeing these same symptoms of sorts or maybe cases that match up with the ones up here. No luck. As for the cases of the two Homicides, it was stated that they were complaining of massive migraines then suddenly snapped babbling to themselves. The first case was a dock worker. He was working on one of the docking bays unloading some equipment from a freighter that had pulled in from Aegis. He had dropped one of the crates of supplies he was carrying and fell to his knees screaming grabbing his head. Then, after about thirty seconds, according to his supervisor who was present, he just stopped and started mumbling. He had then looked up at one of the other workers who was using a loader to carry supplies and ran at the man, telling him to get away from his daughter. He then began to climb the loader then used his claws to gauge out the victims eyes and while the victim was blinded and bleeding, began to bite into his throat. The culprit was a thirty five year old Tiger. Once the worker was bleeding out, choking on his own blood, the man then climbed off the loader and took a defensive stance around. It took four individuals to get the man down on the ground. And one of them later died from being bit in the region around the shoulder and neck. The second was from a Security Officer in the administration section. Three victims, all torn and shot apart, while he was found covered in the blood craddling one of the heads of the victims crying about his mother who had passed away several years ago during a Lothian attack. Two of the assault cases began in a bar, at first we thought it was just intoxicated individuals deciding to have it out with others, but then they showed the same symptoms prior to lashing out. The other three were from families living in their homes who had a loved one show the same exact symptons then proceeded to assault the family members. Two of the individuals that assaulted their families are now dead. Shot by Security Officers upon arrival. The other one is currently locked in the brig where he has been continuously trying to attempt suicide. I am concerned for the well being of this station, and while all I have is the fact that similar symptons have been shown prior to these attacks, I do not have much else. All blood samples from the convicted individuals shows no virus, no fungal infection, nothing. What in the nine hells is going on around here? This is Doctor Terra Brooks, signing off." She clicked the small data recorder off on her desk then sifted through several papers on her desk.
The higher ups agreed with her, to an extent. However they also believe that the recent attack from the Lothians could have pushed some of these individuals over the edge to commit these crimes. Gods only know what kind of trouble could come tomorrow. She groaned as she took her glasses off and rubbed her eyes. The Ferret yawned and stretched in her chair. Time to go home I suppose, She thought. She made her way out of her office and towards the front of the building when some strange noise caught her ears. Her red eyes flicked across the hallway, both in front, then turning her head to check behind her. Weird, she thought. She proceeded to walk down the hallway passing by three other doctors and waving them goodbye when that sound happened again. She stopped and listened to the sound of, was that claws clicking against metal? She glanced at the other three doctors, a Lion, Human, and Wolf. The Lion and Wolf had stopped what they where doing and were listening intently. So they did hear it too. Within the next few seconds it stopped and the two doctors looked at her and she looked back at them. "You guys heard that right?" She asked as she took a few steps towards them.
"Yeah." Said the Lion, his voice rough and sounded like he was an advent smoker. "Weird. Never heard this building make that noise before."
The Wolf nodded. "Definitely," He said. "Worked here for five years and never heard that. The hell is it?" He asked as he walked around the hallway trying to find the noise again.
Terra shifted her ears around listening then heard it again, this time, it was coming closer. "The vents!" She said as she suddenly realized where it might be coming from. She ran towards the nearest ventilation unit and tried to look into it, trying to see what it was. But couldn't see anything. She breathed heavily as she backed away from it when suddenly a shadow moved behind it. She screamed and backed away quickly with the Lion taking a defensive stance over her.
"Doctor Brooks, are you okay?" He asked.
"Yes William, I am. Something is in there." She said.
"Probably some little shit playing tricks on us." Said the Human, they were female, well dressed, but seemed annoyed at the interruption. She made her way towards the ventilation unit and scoffed into it. "Hey!" She shouted. "Get out of there!"
Terra scoffed at the woman and she turned to face her. "You don't know much about this building right?" She said to her. "Those vents are maybe ten meters wide. Not much can fit in there."
The Woman glared at her. "Oh really?" She said.
The Lion, who Terra had recognized as Williams and hence forth said his name, took a step towards the woman. "Miss Ren, she is correct." He said. He was well built but still had a father kind of look to him. "There is no way someone could fit in there."
Just as he said it, Terra saw a sickly black string of fingers slowly come out of the vent and grasp it. "Watch out!" She screamed pointing at the vent. But it was too late. Whatever it was had ripped the vent out and had leaped onto Miss Ren. She screamed out something, claiming that it was biting her. It was a round bulbous object, slimy, with two long appendages like arms with razor sharp claws at the end. Suddenly two more appeared out of its hind end and stabbed into Miss Ren's back. They seem to pulsate, like something was moving through them, and into her back. Her back started to bulge outward then explode in a brilliance of red gore. The screaming seemed to die down as she fell face first onto the floor. The thing's 'mouth' or where it should have been from biting Miss Ren, pulled away revealing a thick tube buried within her neck pulsating, almost like, once again, it was injecting something into her. It detached the tube and it fell to the floor with a wet smack and several small embryo's poured out. Terra shrieked in horror as she grabbed hold of Williams left arm. The thing started to move towards her and William, then leapt straight at her.
She screamed out in horror as she awoke in her office chair. Her fur soaked in sweat. She shuddered and looked around the well lit room, and saw that her data recorder was still going. Damn, she thought, what the hell? The dream was still fresh in her mind, and she was shaken up by it. She clicked the data recorder off and sat there panting trying to gain control of herself. Once she did she stood up and walked out the room. She sniffled at the after images of the dream, still terrified. She walked through the building to the entrance where a young mouse sat at the desk in the front sorting papers out. She waved goodbye to her and made her way home. God, whatever was going on, she hoped she wasn't sick with whatever it was. Once home she turned on the T.V. and skimmed through the stations channels. The news was littered with reports on the Homicides and Assaults, as it had been for the last few days since they started. She laid back in her small couch and watched the stream of reports come in. Apparently the side of the planet they now faced was suppose to have a good day of weather tomorrow. She scratched the back of her head and was about to call it a night when there was a knock on her door. She stood up and walked to it then peaked through it, she did not expect to see what she did. Outside stood Kyle and some Wolf who was holding his arm, his fur covered in blood and it dripping onto the carpet.
She opened the door for the two and glared at Kyle. "Medical Emergency?" She asked. He nodded. She let them in then told the Wolf to sit at a small table with a medical bag next to it. She had placed a few gauze pads on the wound and told him to keep pressure on them while she was looking through her bag. "You know Kyle, you should really stop coming to see me for things like this." She said as she pulled out the equipment needed to clean the wound and stitch it closed. "I maybe a doctor, but there are better equipment over at the hospital."
Kyle grinned a little at her. "I would, but Jack here doesn't have his medical card on him at all. So, sit in the waiting room for the next few hours and wait for the staff to pull up his medical information, or come here and get the job done." He said. "Besides, Jack refused to go to the Hospital. There was a recent scandal at his bank that left his account bleeding credits. Wouldn't have the money to pay the bill." He sat down next to Jack and placed a paw on her shoulder and rubbed it gently.
Terra smiled briefly. "So, your new boytoy huh?" She asked.
Kyle's ears flicked backwards and he blushed. "Yeah, great guy. Helped us fight off the Lothians." He said.
Jack looked up at her and smiled then winced as she started to stitch his arm up. "Sorry for the trouble." He said to her.
She sighed as she finished the job and sat back in her chair. "Don't worry about it too much, you and Kyle can clean this mess up before you leave to pay me back." She said to him as she reached into one of her pockets and pulled out a cigarette. She placed one end into her mouth then lit the other end with a lighter and inhale. She exhaled and grinned at the two. "Any saucy video's you two made recently?" She asked. The two glanced at each other in embarrassment. She laughed. "Anyways, what the hell happened? How did he cut his arm?" She asked.
Kyle glanced at Jack and Jack nodded. "well...." Kyle said. "We were at Tallywackers, that big club, and someone we were drinking with started to mutter to himself. When Jack asked him what was up, the guy outright broke the bottle he was drinking screaming incoherent crap and cut Jack's arm."
Terra looked at Kyle and said, "almost like the other cases correct?"
Kyle tilted his head. "The ones you've been looking into?" He said.
She nodded. "There is no real scientific basis for it but there is now. That man, what happened to him?"
Kyle shrugged, "The station security took him away." He said.
She nodded. "Did you get his name at all?" She asked.
Kyle shrugged, "Believe his first name was Tyler. We didn't talk much with him." He said to her.
She, again, nodded. "Alright, Jack did you retaliate at all?" She asked.
Jack's ears went back and he nodded. "After he cut my arm, I retaliated and ended up breaking his nose as well as almost breaking the wrist of the hand holding the bottle trying to keep him back."
She looked between the two and sighed, "It'll make tracking him a little more easier. Of course there is a coincidence that the migraines, as well as the Assaults and Homicides, are connected, but no scientific fact yet, no actual symptoms within the body yet that we can correlate. However this man might be the link I need to get the higher ups to listen. At the moment they are in disbelief that the two can be connected. However, if they are, then there's a large case in which hundreds, possibly thousands of individuals could become violent and we'd have a mass homicide or assault cases all over the station." She took a drag from her cigarette and exhaled a small cloud of smoke. "I'll go look into this Tyler guy tomorrow. For now suggest you two," She pointed to both of the guys, "Stay away from the bars and clubs for the next few days." Kyle and Jack nodded in agreement with that and after a few more minutes of talking, left. She snuffed out the remains of her cigarette and then went to bed after stripping down. She would have the evidence to connect all of these cases together, and hopefully they could start quarantining people, if it was a virus, if nothing else, have security keep close tabs on individuals reporting migraines.
The next day she went to her office and called up the Chief of Security, William Combs, and discussed what she had heard yesterday from Kyle and Jack and asked if he would allow her to run a few tests on Tyler. He agreed after a bit of coxing and within an hour she was at the station the guy was locked up in. His right hand covered in splints and bandages along with his twisted snout. Tyler was a tough built Panda, his clothing was a mess with alcohol stains as well as a few blood stains from where his broken nose had dripped blood onto, as well as Jacks own blood. Two other security officers were with her, stun guns at the ready as they opened the cell. Tyler was curled up on the bench of the cell muttering and cursing, a wild look in his eyes which were now bloodshot. She, and the two security officers, approached him cautiously. "Tyler, my name is Terra Brooks, I'm a Doctor at one of the ten hospitals on the station. I'm just here to do a check up on you and run a few tests. May I perform them?" She asked Tyler as she stopped a couple feet away from him. She was wearing her basic Doctors outfit, white coat with green scrubs on.
Tyler stopped muttering then looked at her and his eyes widened in surprise. "Mother?" He said as he reached a paw out to her. She looked at him then to the two security officers and gave them a worried look. In no way in hell was she Panda! She shook her head.
"Tyler, may I run a few tests and check up on you?" She asked again.
Tyler nodded slowly and she put down the small container she had brought with her and pulled out a few pieces of equipment and slowly, but surely, began to run her tests. After about two hours of getting everything she needed the three of them left the cell and one of the security officers locked it back up then looked at her. "For once he cooperated. Miracles do happen. Maybe he'll continue to do so and not act so aggressively." He said to her.
She nodded. "He's been aggressive lately? Especially after his attack on his victim?" She asked.
The officer nodded. "Yeah, almost killed one of the Doctors trying to help him. Then bit into one of our guy's necks and brought him close to death. Since then he has either been doing THIS," He gestured to Tyler, "Or he's been pounding his fists, sometimes his freaking head, against the walls or cell door."
She nodded, certainly noting during her evaluation and tests that the other treatments that were performed on him for his injuries. She smiled to the two officers and said her goodbyes then went back to the hospital where she examined her data. After a few hours she had a few notes that show a correlation between migraines and the sudden violent urges. There was something showing up in his blood work, but not a virus. There were also abnormal brain waves. She pondered over that for another hour then continued checking all results. Eventually she did have a small pile that she could submit to the Station leadership to try and do something about these cases. Hopefully they would listen, and hopefully they would act.
