Chapter Two

By

Furry Sith Lord

A small boy crawled on the forest floor moving away from the overturned car that was on fire. He started crying again but his parents still did not come to his side as they usually did. The woman he called mother was still in the car and she looked like she was sleeping. The heat from the fire had driven him away but no matter how much he cried she still would not wake up and come to him.

He heard a small explosion from the car and the noise scared him and he ran further into the woods crying. He looked around in confusion because he had no idea where he was. He knew this was not his home where his toys and his crib were. He just knew he was in a cold, dark, and scary place.

A much louder explosion that came from the direction he had just wondered from sent him running and the burnt smell filled the air with a sickly sooty smell that made his tummy hurt. He wandered along and looked around trying to find the way back to his yard and where his parents might be. He wondered if they had woken up yet.

He wasn’t sure how long he had been walking out in the forest alone but he was suddenly aware that he had messed up his diaper. He had not been paying attention that he needed to use the bathroom and he just went.

His mother had been trying to potty train him and he knew he would be scolded for not using the toilet like a big boy. He felt the mess irritating his skin and he started to cry again in hopes that his mother would bring him a new pull up diaper to wear. One that was clean and did not make him feel icky.

A female wolf stepped out from the bushes and snarled at him with her golden eyes glaring at him full of hatred.

“Puppy,” he said as she looked like a doggie to him. She was bigger than the regular dogs he had seen the people in the neighborhood playing with and taking for walks. She stood there with mostly a gray coloring on the top of her head and back while her legs and belly were tan. There was some white colored fur on her chest also.

He stretched out his hands and stumbled as he tried walking towards her. She showed her fangs and took a step back as she watched him approach.

“Puppy.” he said again and she hesitated then smelled him and realized he was a baby. She took pity and decided to not lash out at him although she was nervous of his present here. She had three pups of her own so her motherly instinct took over.

She sniffed around trying to see if she could smell any others that smelled like the male child but she could not detect anything but the smell of smoke and the child had gone to the bathroom on himself.

The boy gently grabbed her tail and although she was annoyed she led him back to her dem. She knew he would not survive on his own and her motherly instincts again took over as she decided to care for him until his family was found. Worse comes to worse they could always use him as a source of food if needed.

A tall slender man that had a large amount of hair gel to keep his hair slicked backward on his head held the receiver of the phone on his desk. He forced himself to smile even though the caller could not see him.

“Fen Ju, a please to speak to the number one benefactor of our care facility. How may I help you today.” he said, trying to remain polite. He was warned from others about how trying she can be and to be wary of her calls.

“Mrs. Ju will suffice. Why am I not speaking to Yong Shou?” She replied coldly and he had a feeling this was not going to go well.

“I regret to inform you that Mrs. Yong Shou retired a number of years ago. My name is Roger Branton and I am the newly appointed caretaker here.” He replied cordially and doubted it would go well.

“I see. It is a please to meet you Mr. Branton. I hope you can help me in the same manner Miss Shou used to.” Her voice still betrayed any signs of emotions and he had to wonder why she was calling him. If she were interested in her investments into the care facility then she should call their financial advisor to best go over the figures with her.

“How may I assist you?” Roger asked.

“Let me cut to the chase of this discussion. I have been a widow for around 25 years and the child I had adopted many years ago under Yong Shou’s care is now an adult and living on his own. I find myself alone again and feel it is time to consider adopting again.” She said and Roger attempted to not cringe. He could not imagine someone as cold and empty, as she seemed, to be able to give a loving home to one of the children here. The trouble was because she was one of their major benefactors, he could not simply deny her without losing the funding that the care facility so desperately needed.

“I can help you with that. Any specific characteristics that you are looking for?”

“I prefer a young teen because while I hope to raise him to be a fine young man I have no interest in being forced to potty train and teach to read.” She stated.

“That may be a problem. The only male children we have are approximately 6 years old and are non-Asian. We do have a male around 13 to 14 years old and he is Asian but he was found abandoned in the woods raised by wolves. We have been working to try and teach him to talk and read but it has been a difficult struggle so far.” Roger explained.

“I’ll take him!” She replied forcefully. The sudden enthusiasm suddenly surprised him because she seemed as if his case was definitely not what she was interested in.

Roger stood waiting at the curb for Fen Ju to arrive. The boy, named Shinto by the workers, looked blankly across the street. Shinto stood there emotionless as he listened to see if he could hear the howls from his mother and brethren. These creatures that looked like him had cut his long fur on his head.

He looked like the pictures from the books they showed him. They had pictures of the type of creatures that they were with short hair and wearing these strange skins on their body. When the men with loud noise making sticks had captured him. He had been naked just like the rest of his pack was.

They took him and brought him here then made him wear these things, they called ‘clothes.’ He had tried calling out to the pack but they were unable to help him. He wondered if they knew what happened or where he was? He kept hoping they would come for him but so far nothing.

The male next to him was making noises but he could understand very little as to what he was saying. The noises seemed unintelligent unlike how his pack calls out to each other.

“Do you understand?” The male asked and Shinto had heard those words numerous times but he was not sure what they meant. They were not the name ‘Shinto’ they called him so he had no idea how to respond. He had tried howling to get the pack to answer him but these creatures only yelled at him.

A black car pulled up and a woman that was smaller than the male exited it. The male smelled of complacency and he guessed she was someone to be respected. Perhaps she was a pack leader of some sort? Or maybe she was the mother of the male and that was why he obeyed her.

“Is he ready?” she asked Roger.

“Yes ma’am. He came with absolutely nothing so we have a couple of sets of clothes and a few books that he seemed to enjoy looking at as we attempted to teach him. They are baby books but…”

“Good, I'll take it from here.” She said, ending his rambling.

“As you wish. I do wish you the best because there is much he needs to learn. You may find he is about as smart as a 3 year old. Maybe even less than that.” Roger replied and she gave him a cold hard look. She then bent down slightly and looked at the boy then continued.

“He’s smarter than you fools think. The main problem is that you have no idea how to reach him. Luckily I am here.” She said and she smiled at the boy who just watched her stolicly.

“Home.” He said hoping that she would understand that he wanted to return to his pack. They had shown him a book that showed creatures like she was in a building like this was. They had two tall adults and two small cubs in the building smiling and happy and they had a wolf next to them. They called his ‘home’ and he wanted to be with the wolf, his pack, again.

“He keeps saying that but we have no idea what he means.” Roger replied and the female stood upright again.

“He wants to go back to his home in the forest. The only home that he knows.” She said and she saw a gleam of recognition as he heard her say the word he knew. This brought a smile to her face because he was teachable even if the fool running the orphanage thought otherwise.

She was going to make this boy a shining example and once she showcased him then she was going to see that Roger Branston was fired for his ineptitude. She could not fathom how someone like him, a typical WASP, could run an orphanage that was in the chinatown area of the city. Presumably not because of his expertise!

Shinto was brought to her car and made to sit inside as she placed his clothing in the back seat.

“Anything else you need?” Roger asked her but she had taken out her phone. She was busy sending a message to her son’s girlfriend and ignored his question. Roger quickly took the hint and walked away.

“There’s someone I hope will meet you. You may find you both have lots in common.

“Home.” Shinto said and she looked at him and smiled an evil smile.

“Yes home, to your new home.” She said then she started up the car as the boy flinched then they drove away.
