Chapter 4: Home

, , , , , ,

A quiet night at home between two lovers.

Jason pushed his key into the lock and with a click, he was able to push open the door to his apartment. Entering the abode he looked to see a pair of furry ears sticking over the edge of the couch, the television currently playing an older movie: a man and a very funky looking poodle talking about the meaning of a bible verse. Jason smiled and moved over to the kitchen. He grabbed a glass and some ice and ran some water from the tap while also grabbing a small bag of chips from the bowl on the counter. As he turned to go into the living room he saw Jennifer had moved herself to sit at the bar.

“Hello Pumpkin, how was your day?” she said, a tinge of an accent in her voice. Jason snickered as he walked over to her and kissed her forehead.

“I’m not calling you that.” he whispered as he set down his glass and popped a couple of chips into his mouth. Jennifer huffed and brought her padded fingers to his face. She grabbed him and brought him into a proper kiss. As it broke she smirked at him.

“What about now?” she said, her voice playful, edging towards sultry. Jason smirked back at her and shook his head.

“No, honey bunny is a dumb nickname and you know it. You aren’t even a bunny.” Jennifer frowned and pushed them apart.

“Fine, no more kisses for you.” Jason rolled his eyes and Jennifer quickly smiled and set one of her hands on the counter, the other grabbing a couple of chips out of Jason’s small chip bag.

“So, how was your day? Anything riveting happening in the world of comic books today?” Jennifer said in between crunches. Jason gave a small laugh and shook his head.

“No, like normal. A couple people here and there, mostly making money from people using the space to host 40K games and buying snacks while they play Magic. Nothing special, what about you?” he said, finishing the bag. Jennifer sighed and set her face against the countertop.

“Same here, I wish Marcus would let me fucking work by myself instead of being up my ass.” she said as her face turned sideways, snout sticking out with a small pout framed on it. “I take better pictures than him half the time anyway. His framing sucks.”

Jason smiled and ran a couple of fingers up the length of her snout and scratched right next to her ears. The pout was quickly replaced with a content smile. “At least it’s only temporary, right? Gotta work towards getting your own stuff up off the ground. Put that degree to work.”

She gave a content huff before she shook her head and propped herself up on her arms. “Yeah, I know. I just wish it was easier, no one told me it was going to be so much fucking paperwork.”

“I mean yeah, bureaucracy is the cornerstone of modern living. Gotta have everything filled out in triplicate at all times.” Jason said matter-of-factly.

“Yeah, and it’s fucking stupid.” Jason continued to gently scratch at her head. With a final huff and a push away from the counter, she wrapped Jason up in a hug. He happily returned it, feeling her fur gently rub against the skin of his arms. She wore a simple tank top so he was easily able to rub against the fur on her shoulders. She leaned into him harder, feeling her tension melt away under his ministrations.

After a few minutes, she finally pulled away from him and smiled. “Thanks. You still haven’t told me your secret. I can’t relax that easily unless you’re with me.” she said, poking his nose and making her way back to the couch. He walked over and plopped himself directly next to her.

She nestled herself against him and he wrapped an arm around her shoulders to bring her in closer. He leaned them both sideways, Jennifer now using him as a pillow to face the TV and Jason happily holding her close. “Years of practice at this point, don’t ask me to give you a proper answer though. It’s instinctual now, I couldn't explain if I tried.” he said gently tracing circles into the fur on her arm.

“It has been years huh?” Jennifer said softly, placing a hand against Jason’s chest and smiling. “It doesn’t feel like it. Feels like just last week you told me after an okay date.” Jason chuckled.

“Wasn’t that your date idea?” he said with a smirk. Jennifer sighed and nodded.

“Not my best plan, it brought you out of your shell though, so I guess I still win.” She patted his chest twice. “Good effort though, really held out for quite some time.” Jason sighed, shaking his head softly.

“You won’t let me live that down huh?” he said with a small laugh. She stuck a single finger in the air and wiggled it back and forth.

“No sir, I mean look at us now!” she said, gesturing around them. Jason glanced around and took a moment to appreciate what they had. The two of them had been dating for a year before they decided to find their own place, now two years into living together and he couldn’t honestly be happier. They weren’t perfect. Jennifer impulsively bought things, Jason was horrible with keeping his areas clean, both of them hated doing dishes. But it was their own little slice of paradise, both of them coming home to see the smiling face of the other. The way her eyes lit up seeing him whenever she came home from later gigs, Night’s spent together in comfort or passion- it was so very precious to both of them.

“Yeah, it's a wonder we didn’t do this earlier.” Jason said softly. Jennifer snickered and gently patted the side of his face.

“Nah, it’s almost better this way. Being able to be with each other, not sneak around or anything. God forbid if my dad would’ve caught us making out in my room or something back in high school. He might’ve mauled you.” Jennifer said with a small frown. Jason laughed, Jennifer stayed deathly quiet. Jason cleared his throat and jokingly pulled at his shirt collar.

“And here I thought he liked me.”Jason said with a small cough. Jennifer finally looked up at him and smirked.

“Yeah he does, but you try telling that to a father who just lost his precious little girl to a pink little human instead of some other anthro.” she said, poking a padded finger into his cheek.

“I guess, is it really that important?” Jason mumbled. He felt Jennifer shrug against him. “Besides, I didn’t hear you complaining.”

She sputtered a bit and lightly slapped his chest. “Of course not, you are my little pink fleshy boy.”

Jason rolled his eyes and gently wrapped an arm around her. “Okay okay, my little-” He felt her fur bristle against his skin.

“Don’t say it.” she warned.

“What? My littl-” he cooed

“I mean it Jason.” she said tersely, her body tensing up in his arms.

“Aww, is my little trash panda not happy anymore?” he said gently scratching behind her ears. She wiggled slightly and huffed.

“You know I hate that, right?” she said, a small growl evident on the edge of her voice. Jason laughed softly and continued scratching. She relaxed into his touch once again. “Such an asshole.” she said with a content sigh.

“Yeah, but I’m also your asshole.” he responded quickly. He heard a small laugh come from her. She turned around in his arms and embraced him fully.

“Mine.” she said softly, squeezing against him. He smiled and returned the hug. They sat there holding each other for a while before the two lovers fell asleep in each other's arms.

—----------------------------------------------------

Jason awoke to a small snore near his ear. He opened his eyes and saw the familiar sight of Jennifer asleep on top of him. She always nestled herself against his face but it routinely meant he woke up from her snoring and mumbling while asleep. He grunted and began to move, realizing he was still in his work clothes and that it was now dark outside.

“Jenny, hey wake up. I gotta go shower.” she murmured something and brought a hand up to his face, gently shoving it and nuzzling herself more into his shoulder now.

“Five more minutes.” she said with a yawn. Jason sighed and pushed against her, feeling her finally begin to properly stir from her rest. “Okay okay, I’m getting up.” she said as she rolled off of him, and promptly fell onto the floor with a resounding WHUMPF

“Fuck!” she exclaimed. Jason looked down at her as he got up from his lying position.

“You okay Jenny?” he said, holding back a laugh.

“Oh, so much concern, my god don’t spring into action or anything.” she responded coldly, sitting up and rubbing at her back.

“Oh come on, you fell like 10 inches.” he said as he sat up fully on the couch and stretched his arms out. “I really do need to shower, wanna figure out dinner for us?”

“Sure, sure. It is takeout night.” she said as she stood up and did her own stretching to loosen up her back. “Chinese okay?”

“Only if it’s from Hao Chi’s.” he retorted as he got up and made his way to their bedroom.

After gathering clothes and taking a quick shower he came back out to see Jennifer idly munching on a small bag of chips. Jason frowned slightly and placed a hand over the top of the bag as he walked up. “Didn’t you just order food?”

Jennifer sighed and nodded. “Yes, but I wanted a snack. Snacking doesn’t hurt anything.” she said as she grabbed his hand and brought it up to her snout. She sniffed twice and gently rubbed her face against it. Jason smiled, before he could say anything else she licked across the top of his hand. He yanked away and she snickered in victory as she upended the bag into her mouth.

“I just got clean Jenny.” Jason groaned as he grabbed a paper towel to wipe away the saliva coating his hand.

“You sayin I ain’t clean? Them’s fightin’ words!” she said, raising her fist’s playfully. Jason smirked as he noticed a game set up on the tv screen now, a fighting game they both enjoyed.

“Fine, but only a few matches. Got an early start tomorrow, the opener called out so I gotta take his place.” Jason said as he cracked his fingers and walked over to the couch with Jennifer. She sighed softly as the pair sat down and grabbed controllers.

“You really do need a different job, they don’t pay you enough to put up with that shit.” she said, scrolling through the character select screen as a groovy tune played.

Jason selected a couple of his favorites to form a team and nodded. “I know I know, I still would prefer to wait until you have something going. That way bills don’t have to be up in the air.” he said, both of them falling into the familiar routine of neutral to whiff to punish while they talked.

“I just really think it's at least worth it to look around. Hell, you could get some shitty data entry job that would pay better than that comic book store. I know you love it Jason but, it may just be time to move on.” she said as her character dashed forward and let loose an array of kicks. Jason blocked them and blew air through his lips in response.

“I know, how about this. If you can beat me-” he said as he took down one of her characters in the game, and their remaining fighters reset to neutral. “I’ll at least start putting out applications. Fair?” He felt the couch shift slightly as Jennifer sat up and leaned forward. Jason smirked and did the same. “Game on then.”

After an intense battle, it came down to both of them on their final character. Jason had more health than Jennifer but was still one good combo away from losing it. He kept his distance and shot projectiles to chip away at Jennifer’s health but mid-blast she input a teleportation move and followed it up with a short combo and managed to finish it with a throw. Jennifer yelped in victory as she jumped up and started to shake back and forth in a victory dance.

“Alright alright, fair is fair. I will put in applications for a couple of places tomorrow. But I will need to stay going to the store on the weekends. I will probably have to train Austin to take over for me.” She smiled and jumped onto him on the couch, wrapping him in a tight hug.

“Thank you Jason, if I need to find a part-time job or something we will figure it all out okay? But I know you can do better than where you are. I believe in you.” she said, nuzzling into his shoulder. He happily returned the embrace.

“I know, thank you Jenny.” he said as she pulled away slightly from the hug. They locked eyes for a moment, Jason staring into her golden irises, his smile growing wider and a small blush rising to his cheeks. “God you’re beautiful.” he mumbled. Jennifer placed a hand against his cheek and smiled.

“Such a charmer. You know where singing my praises gets you right?” she said leaning in closer. Jason nodded and leaned in as well. He felt their lips connect as they shared a loving kiss. Jason felt her arms get tighter around him, and a hand gently rubbed against his back. As the kiss broke he smiled and gently booped her nose, earning him a small pout.

“Later, we still have food on the way.” he said softly. She thought for a second and smirked.

“That would be quite a tip to leave the delivery man.” she said, licking his cheek.

“I don’t think I want to be a part of that tip.” he said with a laugh. She rose off of him, and as she stood Jason grabbed her hand. She looked over her shoulder and smiled. “I love you.” Jason said gently as he stood. Jennifer giggled and playfully tapped the tip of his nose.

“I love you too Jay.” she returned and made her way to the kitchen to grab plates. “I think I hear a car pulling up, might be the food. Would you get it for us?” Jennifer said, reaching for the plates in one of the cabinets.

“No problem Jenny.” He said, happily making his way to the door. A nice dinner and a relaxing evening together, what more could he ask for? He hoped if he did get a new job it didn’t cut into this comfort. She was his everything and it was moments like this that truly reinforced the love he felt for her.
