Secrets Revealed
Buck learns a few new things about his friends and receives a challenge from one of them.
It wasn’t much of a walk to the cafeteria and we were able to get our food quickly since the others hadn’t quite arrived yet. I sat down at the circular table and set my tray down in front of me. The others took their places at the table as everyone started to pour in. I looked at my tray and sighed when I spotted what had been placed upon it.
‘Chicken…it’s always chicken’. I stared at the fried bird with malice and distaste.
“Buck…Buck are you alright?”
I turned my attention to Zack, who looked a little worried.
“What, oh yeah I’m good, just spaced out there for a minute.”
“Why are you staring at your chicken?”
“Because I’m tired of it, all they gave us back in America.” That school loved repetition apparently since they gave us the same thing every single day.
“Then that school and ours aren’t very different.”
“You mean?”
“Chicken every day” Matt laughed when my head made contact with the table.
“Fan-freaking-tastic”
Despite the terrible food, lunch was actually enjoyable. We talked like we’ve been friends for years as the conversation kept shifting from subjects such as music to sports. Ryan and Zack began talking to each other about football and my attention shifted to Matt as he began to speak.
“Buck, can I ask you something?”
“Sure thing bud, what do ya need?” He looked nervous and began twiddling his thumbs.
“I wanted to know if…you know…would be alright if I wasn’t like the others.” He was trying to find the right words to say.
I smiled after translating his words. I’ve been asked that question before and I understood his hesitancy.
“I got a feeling I already know your question and I’m alright with it.”
“You don’t care that I’m…”
“Gay” I finished his sentence and placed my hand on his shoulder. “An old friend told me the same thing and my reply was the same then as it was now. I don’t care if ya like guys or girls bud. I pay attention to personality, what your like and I know that you’re a good person Matt. I’m glad that you trust me enough to tell me this.”
I know it’s hard to tell people about your homosexuality. It took my friend David all the courage he could muster to tell me, and we were friends for 16 years, so I know it must have been difficult to tell a person you knew for less than a day.
He smiled and lifted his head to look at me. “Thank you Buck…that means a lot.”
“But I have to ask, why did you tell me, we hadn’t even known each other that long?”
“I could tell that you’re kind and caring and would understand so I felt like I could trust you… I also felt your strength radiating around me and I guess I feel safe when I’m around you.”
‘Just like David huh? He’s gonna be bummed if he asks the question’.
“What I’m trying to say is that I want to be near you Buck, to feel protected and cared for. Buck…I wanted to know if maybe we could maybe, you know.”
‘And there’s the question I hoped wouldn’t be asked.’
“Sorry Matt but, I’m not gay” I winced as the sadness set in. “I’m flattered that you would think of me like that. I’d still like to be friends though.” He smiled and caught my eyes. I saw the determination in his eyes and at that moment it dawned on me…he had been trying to get me date him by feigning innocence and timidity, well played friend.
“I would like that, but it doesn’t mean that I’m going to give up.”
“Gonna try and turn me huh? Good luck” I laughed.
“Oh I can be very persistent.”
“And I can be very hard to get.”
“I like a challenge.”
“Then you just hit pay dirt buddy.”
We shared a laugh and looked over to Ryan and Zack that had just finished their conversation and continued to talk like before until the bell rang and released us and we headed for our next class.
“So how’s Rowan’s class?” I asked as I walked down the hall with Matt and Ryan beside me and Zack leading the way.
“It’s the worst class we have.” Ryan groaned as we neared the class.
“Why?” what could possibly be worse than Voan’s monotone voice droning on and on.
“It’s not really the class that’s bad, it’s one of the people that we have it with.”
“Yeah, Eric Barnett, he’s kind of a dick.”
“How so”?
“Let’s see…he constantly mocks everyone, threatens them, and acts like the world revolves around him.”
“Basically a self-centered jackass”
“Pretty much”
“Outstanding”
‘So I got a class with an egotistical human hater that enjoys making everyone else’s lives miserable with a “mightier than though” attitude…sounds fun.’ I thought as I entered the classroom.

Looks like thing’s got even more interesting for Buck thanks to his new admirer. I don’t plan this to be a gay pairing so if you’re not into that, don’t worry, I just wanted to add this because I thought I could get a bit more from it.
