Bong!
Infinity let out a groan as the morning gong sounded, making her ears ache from the intense ringing.
Bong! The gong rang again, making her bare her teeth and open her eyes.
Not even a pleasant way to wake up. She held her neck up, shooting daggers with her gaze at anything that caught her eye. She had never found where the gong was, but she swore if she ever did. Smash it to a million pieces, and melt it with my breath. Then I want a chat with whoever installed it, so he can have a piece of mind as well. She put her head back into her paws with an irritated snort. Course it was probably the wizard.
Bong!
She does not move, even after the gong stops it's annoying ringing. With several sickening plopping noises, the mysterious menagerie of meat smacks onto the floor of her enclosure. She lets out a deep sigh, eyeing the growing slimy pile. Well, time to get it over with. She slurps up the food, not even looking up at the goblins she knew were making snide comments at her. With a small burp the meat was gone, eaten so fast so once again she did not have to have her maw filled with the horrid taste. When I get out of here I will eat like a queen. Never again will I have to eat this. She bared her teeth as she pictured the meat once again. Filth.
She spend the rest of the morning running her claws along the bottom of her enclosure a she paces around that and the next one. She wonders why the free time section was still firmly attached to her enclosure. This had never happened before, there was always a pattern to her day. Get up, eat, free time, experiments. She had learned them well over the years. So why are you not experimenting!? She wanted to roar out. Do you wish to see how long I can put up with this…..boredom? She rose her head, fidgeting her back spines, and let out a snort. Well jokes on you, I would rather have this than your…. She looks up to see the form of the wizard looking down at her from the top of her first enclosure. She feels her muscles all lock up as she freezes in his gaze. All the confidence and strength she had in her mind halted, and she found herself adopting a submissive pose as she obediently padded over to him. She made sure to not look him in the eye.
“You know the drill Infinity." the wizard snarls, glaring at her. He gestures to the wall beneath him, as it releases a small hiss, and parts as if commanded.
Infinity stared down the long corridor that she knew led to the experiment room. Her limbs froze as they tried to rebel. Something to stall the pain she knew would be awaiting her down there. However she found her limbs moving her towards it, despite her mental protests. Why are you doing this? Her voice yelled at her in the back of her mind. Fight it, don't just walk into the pain….FIGHT… She shook her head as she continued to walk, ignoring her very thoughts. It's easier this way. She hung her head, her wings drooping. I would rather have the small pain, than the larger pain if I resisted. She shivered at the thought, Maybe I am the tamed beast he says I am?
“Faster!" He shouted, and with a flick of his wrist a small ray of electricity sparked off his finger and stung her flank with the feel of a thousand stingers sinking into her flesh. She let out a pained gasp, quickening her pace to an almost run until she was in the long dark corridor. “We do have to make up for time lost yesterday." She hears him chuckle loudly, causing her to shiver.
She raises her head to look down the tunnel she knows is before her, however it is pitch black. It must be magical. She sighs walking forward, for even with her perfect night vision she could not see down the long corridor. Why even have this part be like this? Is he trying to frighten me? Her heart beats a tad faster, What could be in store for me this time? She feels an icy grip seem to wrap around her scales with each step. A dragon should not feel this way…..Not to a mortal….not to anyone… She snarls internally, feeling the shake in her paws. Yet here he has me terrified. With her final three steps she finds herself in a stone room able to hold three times her wing spread. Her eyes trace along the magical lanterns that hang above, painting the stone flow in a dull glow. She averts her eyes at all the smears of dried blood. Blood she knew that had come from her. She feels her body shiver as she brings her entire body into this horrid place, and the way behind her closes with a loud slam. There was no escape now, she was going to be subjected to something horrible. She could feel it in the pit of her stomach as she settled onto her haunches, curling her tail around her. How many times have I been in this place? She thinks, staring at a section of the wall she knew would eventually open to reveal the horrid wizard that claimed to be her master. Her whole body shutters at the mere thought. Too many times to count…
Sure enough the section of wall she was staring at opens, as the wizard walks in with his arms crossed, his blue robes flowing. He is flanked by two goblins in offwhite clothing. In their slimy hands they have silver trays with all a manner of sharp looking instruments. The wizard suddenly stops in place, glaring at her with an amused look on his face. His lips than curled into a wicked grin as she averted her gaze, hanging her head out of instinct. “So you might like to hear that my new apprentice would not stop talking about a certain topic this morning.." He smiled, showing off his perfect white teeth in a predatory fashion. “It made him quite eager to learn actually. It surprised me that the topic could provide such…….motivation…..Do you happen to know what...the topic could have possibly been?"
OH NO. She nodded weakly, keeping her head down. Her spines folded down against her body, her wings drooped, and she started to shiver.
“Oh do speak up Infinity. Use your words." he chuckles deeply. “I know you can use them after all. Despite what the goblins say, we both know you are not a simple stupid beast." He unfolds his arms, and taps his chin.
“Yes." She replies without looking up. Please don't let it hurt too much...Please…
“Do you know what topic he would simply not stop asking about?"
“Me."
“OH?" He said, surprise sounding in his voice. “He was just asking about dragons in general. Would not stop blabbering on about them." He crossed his arms again, raising an eyebrow. “Why would he be asking about you in particular?"
No...How could I have flew so easily into that….like some hatchling..What do I do? Do i admit it and risk the punishment? Or lie and hope he believes it?
“You should know it made him easier to teach today. So today we shall continue with less invasive ways than normal…...as a reward." He hissed, “Now you have not answered me Infinity, you seem lost at what to say…" He chuckled, “Now why would he be asking about you? Did you two have a little chat?"
“He came to see me last night." She hissed, “Are you going to hurt him?"
“Fascinating…" the wizard muttered, his eyes wide. “Despite me warning him about you, and how you ripped my previous apprentice limb from limb, he still came to see you. Either he is very brave or foolish." He waves dismissively at her with a laugh. “Don't worry your little scales Infinity, you two can have your little chats." He takes a finger and runs it slowly along her black scales. “I don't know why you shiver so much Infinity. Were you scared about what I would think?" He laughs.
He turns around to the goblins who had not moved in the slightest. However their eyes had remained on Infinity the entire time, frozen in fear. “Now where were we?" he clasps his hands together as if in a prayer. “Ah yes, the subject of your heads!" He turns with a horridly wicked smile, gesturing to her runes. He let out a deep laugh as she flinched. “Now I know you are not in full control of them yet. But I wish you to try and control them." He turned and gestured to the two goblins with a wave of his hand.
Infinities eyes widen as she realizes that one of them is carrying a saw, with many sharp looking metal teeth. She feels her blood turn to ice, and her breathing quickens as she realizes what they are going to do. The runes around her neck begin to itch as the two green skinned creatures step fearfully towards her. Her entire body trembled the closer they got to her, but she still held her ground.
“If you would extend your neck dear. It will hurt much less than if you struggle." The wizard grinned as he watched her body shiver and shake.
Easy for you to say human. You do not have your neck sliced off with a metal blade. She wanted to snarl at the man, snap at him, but she reined herself in, her body going slack in surrender. She lowered her head and stretched out her neck. She closed her eyes, and readied herself for the coming pain. Let it be over quick…..Or gods let it not work and I die right here...let me be free.
She feels the blade's teeth rest against her neck. She grits her teeth as the little creatures press the thing down and begin to slowly saw right through her flesh. Each back and forth of the saw brings new spikes of pain, as she feels the teeth slowly dig through her. Blood spills forth to drip down her white scales, dripping down, and splattering softly onto the floor below. She lets out another pained gasp, as she grits her teeth ever the harder. She could already feel the darkness starting to take her as they almost made it all the way….. Everything went black.
It felt like she was suspended in nothing. Floating endlessly in a dark abyss. It was like every other time it had happened. My heads are going to regrow. She thinks weakly to herself, feeling her headless body start to rumble and thrash on the floor. Her claws scrape hard into the stone, ripping up the floor and leaving two rows of scars. Suddenly with a sickening pop her vision had returned to her, however it was not just one view before her but two. She tried to think about how she must look, two dragon heads moving back and forth, like the large hydras that roamed swamps.
“Now I want you to try and control the heads now Infinity."
She felt weird, just like every other time it happened. Why is this so hard? She found herself moving both sets of heads to look at one another. It was always a surreal sight. She was looking at herself through different pairs of eyes. She could make out her normal black scaled snout, with the bright green eyes looking at her, but at the same time could see a green scaled head with bright orange eyes looking back at her. She staggered to all fours, still not looking away from herself. It was so strange, she watched the green head's frills twitch on their own. Oh no...not again. She willed in her head to try to get them to stop. With a mental sigh, they did just that.
“Well,a green today." The wizard chuckled, “That is certainly new for you. Did you tire of the red one?"
She watched from the green dragon's eyes as the black head suddenly jerked its snout towards the goblins, baring her teeth in a snarl. No focus! She mentally screamed to herself, as the black dragon head suddenly lashed out at one of the goblins, sinking her teeth deep into his shoulder, causing the goblin to let out a terrified screech of pain.
“Tisk, tisk, tisk." The wizard shook his head, his eyes filling with disappointment. “Still don't have that right, do we?"
The black head pulls violently back from the goblin, ripping a solid chunk from the thing. Causing his body to stagger backwards, and fall to the ground. Blood starting to pool beneath him, as the life drains from his face.
“AAEEEEEEEEE!" The other goblin lets out a shriek of terror, turning and trying to bolt away from her, and towards his master.
“Not today I am afraid." The wizard replied, holding out his hand, causing the goblin to suddenly freeze in place. His small body stuck in mid-stride, his eyes filled with terror as he had peeked back at the dragoness. “It's better if they die together in here…" He sighs, “Less talk among the others, less fear." He glares up at Infinity, who glares right back at him with blood dripping down her maw. “Go ahead and kill the other one if you would." He gestures to the goblin with his palm.
She strode over, and this time the green head lashed out at the goblin, grabbing hold of the pitiful creature's neck. With one violent thrash of her head, the thing's neck snapped with a crunch.
“Very good!" The wizard laughs loudly, standing back from here.
She glared at him with two sets of eyes. Despite being out of control she could feel the sensation inside of her, stopping her from attacking him, despite him looking so easy to bite, to rip, to taste his blood.
“Now I will give you the rest of the day my girl." He turns around, confident that the dragoness would not harm him. “I will get back to my favored apprentice now." He chuckles, stroking his beard with his hand. “Then next time we can test the regeneration factor I have been working on. Mark my words Infinity, you will be the most dangerous monster I have ever made!"
She ignored his words, the black dragon head continuing to rip into the goblin, tearing chunks of flesh from his body and eagerly gobbling them down her gullet. She shivered as she could feel that thing's delight at tasting real meat. My delight. Both of her heads turn as the way behind her opens, leading back towards her enclosure.
“Feel free to bring your meals. You earned them after all my dear." He laughs, walking through the door he had entered. It slides shut behind him with a dull slam that echoes around the room.
The two heads look down at the other goblin for a moment before they start snapping at one another. Stop! She cried to herself, trying to get herself to stop fighting. Finally after a few minutes of snapping and mental struggling, the green dragon head grabbed hold of the other goblin, and with a snort she dragged their corpses back towards her enclosure. Once there she tore into the goblins in a grisly fashion, and only stopped when she had plucked all the meat from their bones. After an hour the green dragon head fell off with a plop, and she watched it break apart into nothing in a matter of moments. She glared down at the grass where it had just been, there was no sign of it ever being there. She let out a sigh a she strode over to the water and washed her scales, she glared angrily at herself covered in the dried blood of the goblins. The horrible taste is not even there. She realized to her horror, as she dunked her head into the water.
Once she was done washing herself, she reclined and cleaned her scales with her tongue. She almost figured she would probably remind someone of a giant cat grooming itself, but she shrugged off the feeling until she was finished. The rest of the day passed to her in a bored blur. The wizard never came back to torment her, the goblins did not come back to offer her snide comments, nor did she get dinner that night. She figured it was because she had been “fed" the other two. When the lights faded away to leave her in the dark, she strode over to her resting area, circled her bed three times, and curled her body around herself. With a snort she rested her head on the ground, closed her eyes, and covered her snout with her tail. She tried to not think about what had happened today as her body gave a small shiver. Please let me at least escape this place in my dreams….
“Night Rising." The sound of a soft voice woke her from her dreams.
She blinked her eyes groggily, raising her head up. Who...what?..... Her eyes widened as she realized the boy Axton had returned. He came back?
“Night Rising." he called down again to her.
“What?" She grumbled, still half asleep. Compliments or no, it was still annoying to be woken from her slumber, especially if I was going to dream pleasant dreams.
“Sorry." Axton says to her softly, she sees him cringe. “I brought gifts this time." he smiles. “My master says dragons like those from time to time….And treasure of course."
He brought gifts? No one has EVER brought me gifts. She perked her ears up, as she looked to him expectantly.
“Can I come down?" He asks, holding a bundle of dirt brown rope in his hands, wiggling it slightly.
He wants to come down? Last night he had been terrified to come down. The wizard said the chats were fine right? Or did having the human down here break some sort of rule? She started to pad the ground with her forepaws nervously, then gave the human a small nod.
“I can stay up here if you want… I just did not want to drop it down like you were some sort of animal."
Well the wizard did not certainly teach you how to talk to dragons….you're actually nice...and isn't that that refreshing? “I can grab it."
“Oh, ok."
She rose to stand to all fours, working a kink out of her neck. She stretched her wings wide for a moment, smirking as she heard him give a little gasp. Once that was done she refolded them against her back, and stood on her hind legs and leaned on the wall for support. She extended one of her forepaws up towards the excited human. She watched him sling the brown pack off of his back in an instant, and reaching his hands inside of it. He rifled through the pack for a moment, before pulling out a bundle that was the five times the size of both of his palms, and seemed to be wrapped in a thin metal sheet.
“Do you need me to unwrap it?" He asked, his voice soft.
Why would you need to unwrap it for me little human? She laughed at the thought of it. Do you think me some big clumsy thing that cannot perform fine manipulations with my claws? Please little Axton, I am a dragon after all. She shook her head no at him, and to her amazement he did not appear hurt in the slightest. I was almost sure I would hurt his little human pride for a moment.
Axton took the package, and held it with his hand as far as he could reach into the enclosure, making sure his other hand hugged the railing so he did not fall. He had a look of determination on his face, like it was a personal test to do this and not fall in the process.
So perhaps you have a little pride in you human. That's a fine dragon quality to have. She wrapped her claws around the package and felt it squish in her grasp. That's strange, I almost thought it was going to be solid. She brought it down into her other forepaw, as she took a seat on her haunches. She poked it again with one of her talons, piercing the thin metal sheet. What could you have gotten me human? She retracted her talon, getting a smell of meat. Not the kind she had been fed every morning, but sweet, savory smelling meat. She felt her maw begin to water as she quickly and carefully unwrapped the package. Inside the thin metal sheet was a large slab of steak, raw and still leaking some of it's juices. With its covering gone it smelled divine. She looked up to him, a smile almost forming onto her snout. This is…..Thoughts failed her for a moment. Wonderful of you. She licked her lips, as a thin bit of drool escaped her maw. Too bad I am not very hungry.
“I am not very hungry Axton...but I will save it.." She twitched her tail slightly, as her spines rose up from her back. “And….thank you…" This is the nicest thing someone has done for me… She had wanted to add, but stopped herself.
Axton moved so that he was sitting cross legged at the top of the enclosure, looking down at her with a warm smile on his little human face. She had to admit the human was kind of adorable with that smile. “So how was your day?" He asked, placing his chin into his palms.
Horrible….They cut off my head….and I actually ate goblin…..again…..and I did not mind the taste. She almost gagged in disgust, but managed to hold it in. “Worse than yesterday." She quickly responded as he sat there waiting for her response. She sees him look over behind her, no doubt to the tattered clothing and remains of the goblins.
“Did you kill them?" He asks softly.
“Yes.." She hissed angrily. “I was not in control of my actions...it was like I was a passenger in my own body." She shivered at the thought, remembering how she watched herself rip into the goblins, tearing their flesh, eating their corpses….
“That must have been scary." He mutters, even softer than before.
“Yes….it was." She replied, licking one of her forepaws with her forked tongue.
“So……...What kind of things do you like? So I know what to bring you tomorrow!"
Bring me things? Are you going to be MY servant instead of the wizards? She looked at him in amusement. I wish I could, I would treat you probably better than he will treat you in the end. “I don't know what you can bring me….I have never really had any…..things."
“Well what if I found some treasure for you? Dragon's I hear love treasure….especially red ones."
Me?....Treasure?... Her lips curled into a genuine smile at the idea. “Okay."
Axton pulls from his pack a piece of manilla parchment, and a white feathered quill. “Have you ever been outside this place?"
Once or twice….When I found ways to escape…"A few times, but only for a few hours at a time."
“Was it far away from this place?" He placed the tip of the quill onto the paper, after dunking it in a small glass vial of black ink he pulled from the confines of his pack.
She shrugged, fluttering her wings slightly, “Not really."
“Oh....How old are you?.."
“I am 492 seasons old I think...The wizard always likes to remind me when the seasons change. It's like he wants me to know how long he has held me captive."
“Seasons?........Your 123 years old?" Axton gasped, as he wrote that down onto the paper infront of him…"Well I am 12!" He proudly thumbs his chest with the hand holding the quill.
Your only 48 seasons? She snorted in amusement. Your so young!;
'What's so funny?" He chuckles. “I know it's not 123…"
“We just have quite the age differences..
“Hey I am not that young!" He replied, wrinkling his brow.
“Your just hardly out of being a wrymling!" She smiles, twitching her tail slightly.
“Well I suppose." Axton crossed his arms. “But we don't live as long as you do."
How old did humans live for? I don't think it is as long as dragons...She gave him a nod, and gave him a thoughtful look.
There was a pregnant pause as he went back to putting his quill to the paper. “Night Rising?"
“Yes?" She replied, fighting back a happy croon. It was so night to hear her title being used. Unlike the wizard…
“Did anyone ever talk to you….before me?"
“Not really."
Axton wrinkled his brow, still looking to her. “Well I will always talk to you." He gave a sigh, and lowered his head. “Second day here, and you're still the only one to talk to me besides the master."
Get used to that then Axton. She could feel her own anger rising in her chest. He is going to make you feel like that….just like me.
“Do you mind if I draw you again whilst we talk?"
You can draw me all you want Axton. 'Sure." She replied, stretching out her entire body, letting her wings unfurl slightly.
“How do you want to be posed?" He holds up his hands, and forms a square. “All regal like you currently are? Or perhaps roaring?"
Regal? She laughed to herself. This human dispensed with the flatter so much, she would have to steal him away. 'I do not care, draw whatever you wish."
He placed the quill to paper and began to draw with soft scratches of the quill on the parchment. “So did you know your parents?" he asked after a solid minute of drawing.
She tried to remember the blurry images of the people that had been with herm wrinkling her snout. Once again as she tried to sift through the murky depths of her mind she came up blank. “I think I saw my mother's face once." She said quietly, as she dropped her gaze to the ground. If I could only remember your face… She felt the despair spike once again in her mind, making her whole body feel as though it were being dragged onto the floor on which she sat.
“I..I am so sorry." he replied softly, his voice full of sympathy. “So you spent your entire life here then?"
“I may have well as. I cannot remember a time when I was not in here."
“With no one to talk to." she heard him murmur under his breath. “So did anyone teach you anything then?"
“Some things. Only the things that mattered. The rest I taught myself. Like how to speak."
“So you never met any other dragons then?"
She tried reaching into her mind once again. What is the point it's all a blur anyway. “I think I saw one from a distance, long ago.."
“Would you mind being read to each night? Maybe about all the other kinds of dragons in the world?"
How will that help me escape? It would be nice to learn of course...but that is un-needed. “I guess…if you have nothing else."
“Well I j-just figured it would be giving you back something that was taken from you.." he replied softly, drooping his head slightly. “Plus I get someone to talk to."
If it helps you I can do this Axton. She gave him a slight smile, “Yeah."
“Hey you can smile!" he exclaims loudly with a large smirk of his own, thrusting a finger at her.
“Well of course I can. I have done it before." She cocked her head to the side. “Did you think me unable?" She snorted, tapping her tail against the ground.
“Well...it just sounds like you have not much to be happy about."
'I don't do I?"
“I am sorry." He says with a frown, picking up his things.
Is he going to leave so soon? She stretched from snout to tail, than curling herself up once again.
“Did you really kill the last apprentice?" he whispers, looking back as he stands up.
She thought about lying to him for a moment, if just to ease his mind. “Yes. I'll not lie to you." She watched him for his reaction. It granted her no joy when he shivered.
“T-than why did you not kill me when I fell?"
“You were not like the other one..and there was no chance of escape."
“So if you had a chance to escape...you would have killed me to do it?" he asked softly.
Would I really kill him to escape? This human boy that has been nice to me? Shown me kindness when all I have ever known is cruelty and pain? “That is what I am asking myself."
“Oh.." Axton fidgeted for a moment, lowering his head.
“If it sets your mind at ease it is really a hard question." She snorted. “You have been most kinds to me."
“Well that's at least good." He replied, raising his head. “What kind of things would you like to hear about?" He held up a hand and extended some fingers, “I could swipe spellbooks, informational tomes, stories.."
“Whatever your favorite is." She blinked, not sure which one to choose.
“No you're my guest. It's your choice miss dragon." Axton gave her a smirk, holding his finger towards her and wagging it slightly.
“Well I should try them all to find my favorite...So that's why I said start with yours." I can't believe he wants to come and read to me. Is he a captive maiden, that must read to his dragon captor? She smirked at the idea, and gave him a pleased look, twitching her ears.
“Well that will certainly give me ideas for the other nights." he says with stifling a yawn. “I should really get to bed...I'll back tomorrow...ya?"
“Okay."
“Good night Night Rising."
She rested her snout into her paws with a smirk, as she heard him start to walk away with his soft footsteps.
