chapter 3: an instent tragedy
hey there here is chapter 3.
Innes ran into trouble and treecko got sick from the poison.
i thought about making it longer, but went against it. I wanted to improve Innes and Poochyena's relationship a bit, as well as give him more personality.
Brendon also appears, he will get more of a personality next chapter.
I was told I could get to Oldale town before it got dark, I was told wrong. “Why is this taking so long?” I muttered. The sun was getting lower by the minute, ether I find Oldale Town or camp for the night. I think we have been traveling for a few hours and we are already lost, this was not a good sign on how my journey would go.
I could feel Treecko starting to slump on my shoulders. He has been is some battles with the wild pokemon here, so of course he would start slumping. “Treecko, you need some rest. Take five in your pokeball, all right.” I pulled Treecko’s ball out, but he jumped onto one of the trees, “Treecko, come on into your ball.” Treecko turned his head from me and cross his arm. “Why are you being stubborn Treecko?” I pointed the ball at him to return but he moved behind the tree. “Treecko, come down okay.” I went around and didn’t see him on the tree anymore. Did he move to another or climbed higher?
I heard Treecko scream from above me. I saw him fall off of one of the branches, “Treecko.” I caught him before he hit the ground, “Treecko, hey Treecko answer me.” Treecko looked sick, his breath was rapid and his skin looked discolored. I look up and see a Wurmple glaring at me. It must have been the one to do this to Treecko.
I put Treecko back into his ball, I rather have him out in case of an attack but I need to find him help. I turn to leave and something hits my backpack. I looked and saw a long silk think connected to my backpack and…Wurmple. Was he planning to fight me? Crap I need to run. I broke into a sprint, hoping that the Wurmple won’t chase after me.
By the time I stopped running the sun was gone from the sky. The woods around me were incredibly dark. Damn it, if I wasn’t lost then I am now. I pulled out the pokenav, the screen lit up showing my position on the screen. Oldale Town was close; about halve a mile east from here. They should have a pokemon center to help me, but there is a problem.
Treecko is in no condition to fight and pokemon are sure to attack me in the dark, and I am completely defenseless. Guess I have no choice. I reached in my pocket for Poochyena’s ball. I tried to let him out a few times and he bit me each time, but he was the only other pokemon I had.
“Okay, Poochyena, I need you out.” I released the ball, letting Poochyena out. Poochyena natural dark fur made it hard to see him at all. The first thing Poochyena did was bite my arm. “Ow, okay you bit me, now I need your help.” Poochyena didn’t release his grip on my arm, “okay, I know you hate me but please hear me out. Treecko is in danger and we need to get him to the pokemon center in Oldale Town. He can’t fight so I need you to fight in his place.” Poochyena’s teeth sunk in deeper; probably upset I am using him as a replacement for Treecko. “Please Poochyena, Treecko is in serious danger at the moment. I am begging for you to help me here.”
I felt Poochyena’s teeth remove themselves from my skin. I felt blood come out as Poochyena ran off. He left me. I begged him to help and he ran off to who knows where. I heard a barking sound from where Poochyena ran off to. I stood where I was when Poochyena returned. He was barking at me, like he was angry at me. “What you want me to follow you,” he nodded and took off. “Wait come back,” he did what I asked and came back, “I can’t see as well in the dark so… hold on.” I pulled out a flashlight and turned it on, “this would help me see. Now we need to head east, okay.” Poochyena barked then ran off with me following behind.
We ran thought the dark forest, trying to make it to Oldale town as fast as possible. Poochyena glanced back a few times to make sure I was keeping up, which I barely able to do. I followed Poochyena till he stop suddenly, “What is it?” I followed his gaze and saw houses…and there light were still on. “Great job Poochyena,” I ran up to the house and banged on it, “help is anyone in there? I need help.”
“What do you want?” said a grouchy old man.
“My Treecko’s hurt badly, I need a pokemon center.”
“Follow the path on the right and look for a red roof with a P on it.”
“Thank you so much.” I sprinted down the path, looking franticly for the pokemon center the old man said. The area was just a rural as the other place, not many large buildings but a few street lights here and there. “There it is.” The pokemon center was dead ahead, I used whatever strength I had to run straight to it.
I didn’t pay attention to the decoration and headed to the desk, “Welcome to”
“My Treecko is hurt, need help.” I wheezed out getting Treecko out of his ball.
“Oh my,” the Nurse press a button and a Chansey with a stretcher came out. The Nurse placed Treecko on the stretcher, “wait here till Chansey comes back.” Both she and the Chansey left with Treecko past the double doors.
My knees gave out on me. I felt exhausted. My first day on the journey and already things got worse. I felt something lean on me, it was Poochyena. He made a whimpering noise, “Don’t worry, I am sure Treecko is going to pull though.” I said that more for myself then for Poochyena’s sake.
I pulled myself of the floor and walked to a bench. When I sat down, Poochyena started to lick the bite mark he gave me. Oh right, I still needed to treat that. I pulled a basic care kit out of my bag and started to treat my arm. The puncture wounds from the bite were small, so I just disinfected them and added small bandages to it. Poochyena curled up into a ball on my lap and closed his eyes. While he slept he looked cute, in a way. I petted Poochyena, I was amazed how his fur felt. I was expecting it to be rough but it was actually really soft.
“Chansey” I heard a Chansey call out in the lobby. The Chansey was looking at me so it must be about Treecko. I woke Poochyena and walked through the doors.
I followed Chansey down the hallway, anxious about Treecko’s condition. The Chansey lead us to the nurse from the front desk, she was standing by some window, “this is your Treecko, correct?” she gestured to the window and looked through it. Treecko was in some machine I never seen before. It looked like some glass case with wire and light covering it. There were some other people in there watching the screen, but my focus was on Treecko. Treecko still looked like he was in pain, like he was suffocating.
“Yes he is mine.”
“Right, I should tell you about his condition.” The nurse looked me in the eyes, “Your Treecko has been poisoned.”
When I heard her say poisoned, I almost panicked, “He is going to be alright?”
“Yes, you did the right thing bring him here immediately. The toxins in his body were very strong, if you pushed off coming here any later, he would have been critical.” I felt so much relief. Treecko was going to pull thought.
However, something about the Nurses statement confused me, “wait you said the toxins were strong?”
“Yes, they were.”
“But how, I don’t think that Wurmple could make a strong poison?”
“Your right mostly,” another voice spoke behind me. My eyes were drawn to the boy standing behind me. He wore a red shirt with black shorts and a knit cap, “under most conditions, Wurmple toxins are rarely dangerous, however I am guessing that Wurmple is slightly different from the others.”
“You know that Wurmple?”
“Yeah, that Wurmple is highly aggressive. It has been poisoning pokemon left and right.”
“Yes,” the nurse joined in, “that Wurmple has been attacking trainers and other pokemon a lot. It is odd, because Wurmple only attack when threatened.”
“So did Wurmple attack Treecko because it thought Treecko was threatening?”
“No, that Wurmple attacks people deliberately. I think Treecko was just a convenient target for it.”
What he said struck a nerve in me. Treecko got attacked because he was just there? I felt anger build up inside me, like I was about to burst. “Then we need to stop it.” I said.
“What?”
“You heard me. This Wurmple is not going to stop unless someone does something. That’s why I am going out there.” the last part seemed to flow out of my mouth. I didn’t think it was a good idea, but feeling angry does not give you clear thoughts.
“Hold on,” the boy said, “you think of going outside now? It is getting dark out there.”
“I know, but if we wait, there is a chance that Wurmple is going to do the same thing it did to Treecko to other pokemon as well. I don’t want to sit around waiting for that to happen.”
I turned around to leave when the boy grabbed my arm, “what are you going to fight it with?”
“Poochyena of course,” Poochyena barked once showing his willingness to help.
“Poochyena is a Dark-type. He is at a disadvantage against Wurmple.”
“Then what do you expect me to do then? If you have an answer then spit it out. What am I going to do while Treecko is recovering from being target practice then?” he looked away from me, “answer me, damn it!”
“I don’t know! What do you expect me to say? It is useless, all useless, to go running in blindly just because you’re angry. Do you want Poochyena to suffer the same thing?”
When he asked that, I calmed down. If I go in blindly, Poochyena would suffer the same fate. “Sorry,” I stared at the floor, “you right, I should have thought of that.”
“But your right about one thing,” I looked at him, “that Wurmple is still going to attack people. Sooner or later someone would have to stop it.”
“So who then?”
“Us, together we can beat it.”
“You were against the idea in the first place, why changed your mind now?”
“I was against ‘you’ going out there alone. I have two pokemon who can fight so it is best if we go together.”
“You’re not telling me to stay here?”
“Would you have stayed if I asked?”
“Honestly, no.”
“All right, let me get my bag and I will see you at the front desk in ten.”
I stared at Treecko thought the glass; he looked like he was in pain. “Hey nurse, can you keep an eye on him?”
“Y-yes I can, but are you sure?”
“Yeah, please make sure he gets better.” I glanced back at Treecko. You make sure to pull though as well, Treecko.
I waited in the lobby for the boy to come back. I put Poochyena back in his ball, figured he should get as much rest as he could before we leave. He showed up twenty minutes later, “You waited long?” the boy asked.
“Since the start, we have an idea where to look?”
“Yeah, I asked around and most of the attacks around a certain area we should start there.”
“Got it,” then I remembered something, “I never got your name. My name is Innes.” I stuck my hand out.
“Right,” he grabbed my hand, “I’m Brendan, pleasure to work with you.”
“Likewise, let’s go.” The both of us step into the night air, unaware how difficult this would actually be for us.
