Chapter Two
“Doing Hard Time"
By
Furry Sith Lord
The cops brought me to a police station inside the domed city and I was given an ugly green colored jumpsuit they had. It was something the juvies would wear from the local detention center. The police had a few outfits for juvies and adult criminals should they need some clothing to wear.
I was properly booked, which consisted of sitting on a bench and being cuffed to it for an extended period of time them sent to be fingerprinted and placed in a separate holding cell from the other adult inmates as they made ‘catcalls’ to me.
I really didn’t think they would actually try and rape me but I think they were just giving me the prison experience by trying to unnerve me. It reminded me of the movie Shawshank Redemption when in the beginning the other inmates were making bets and trying to see who would be the first to crack. For the first time I actually understood what they had gone through.
I tried being as brave as I could but I felt that at any moment I was ready to break down and start crying. The only hope I had was that the cops would be calling my parents and maybe they could come get me… or that I’d wake up from this nightmare.
It felt like an eternity until Officer Jorge came and brought me into an interrogation room. A doctor in a white coat and mask was there and he put some kind of IV into my arm and a bag of a very light yellow colored liquid flowed into me. I was nervous at first because to me it looked like piss. Officer Jorge told me that if I tried to remove the IV they would tie me down and force it into me.
“Listen kid, that's medicine and you need to take the whole bag unless you want to get really sick. It’s a miracle you didn’t die when we found you.” He said and I accepted what he was telling me simply because I did not want to be tied to the chair. The IV was annoyingly itchy and I kept scratching at it.
The more I thought about uit I started to wonder if they were lying to me and that maybe it was a form of truth serum they were putting in me. Not that I had anything to hide but it would not cause me to change my story of how I woke up in the ruins of my house.
After the bag was empty the doctor returned and removed the IV. He was asking if I was feeling any different and I told him I felt the same. He checked me over again and drew some blood work before he left.
A detective entered wearing a suit but he had a gold colored badge attached to something on his belt. He placed a file in front of him and started to look through it.
“So it says your name is Peter. I’m Detective Callahan and I’ve been assigned to your case.” He said and he closed the file and gave me a brief smile as he looked at me. “You can call me Mark, after all we’re all friends here and we want to get you back to your parents as soon as possible.
Why don’t you start off by telling me why you were in that house in the first place. You must know the dangers of going outside, why did you do it? Was it on a dare or lost a bet?”
“No sir, like I already said I went to bed last night and when I woke up my house was trashed and those two officers arrested me for no reason.” I answered.
“Tell me about that again. You went to sleep and you woke up in a strange house?”
“No, it was my house but when I woke up the place was trashed. I’d never seen it like that before.” I replied. He asked me my address and I told him as he looked at me with indifference then he asked who my parents were and I told him. He began to read through the folder again as I sat there waiting for him to say something.
“Listen Peter, lying to me isn’t going to help you.” Mark finally said.
“Lying?” I asked incredulously because I had no clue why he’d think I was lying. Especially if they were pumping me full of this truth serum stuff.
“We found the guy that you called your father but he has no clue who you are and he even admits he’s not married to whoever the one you said was your mother.
“What?!” I said out of reaction. I could not believe what he was saying to me. I know who my parents are and I was starting to think that he was lying to me.
“Which group are you a part of?” He asked sternly.
“Which group?” I repeated, having no idea what he was talking about.
“Don’t play dumb with me kid. I want to help you but you have to help me to help yourself. You’re trying to protect people that just left you in that house to die. Do you know what would have happened if we had not been alerted that you were there?” He said and I shrugged.
“I’ve seen others like yourself suffer from radiation poisoning and die horrible deaths. We got to you in time, this time but where were your friends? Why did they leave you out there to die?”
“Radiation?! What are you talking about? My friends?! What do they have to do with anything? I’m not going to see them until I go to school on Monday.” I replied and he stared at me.
“School? What school do you go to?” Mark asked as he took out a sheet of paper and a pen. I told him my school and as he looked at me skeptically I started to name off my teachers and what classes I had. He wrote down what I was saying but the look on his face told me he was dismissing what I said.
“Don’t lie to me there is no school named after this. Was this training they gave you to lie about all this if you get captured? Or has the radiation really fried your brain so badly that you actually believe this nonsense.” He asked. I stared at him in disbelief. Now I was convinced he was lying to me or trying to trick me into saying something.
“You guys are pumping me full of this truth serum stuff and you think I’m still lying?!” I replied as I folded my arms across my chest. Detective Mark began to laugh and I continued staring.
“You think that stuff is truth serum?” He started to chuckle again. “That ‘stuff’ is Potassium Iodide. It is used to treat radiation poisoning and the doctor that examined you found if you want to keep on living you need to b e treated.”
“How the hell did I get radiation poisoning?” I asked and he stared at me.
“You do remember that everywhere outside the dome is highly radiated. You’re lucky you didn’t die.” Detective Mark said as he skeptically watched me and I stared at him in silence. I looked at the bag and tried guessing if he was still lying or not.
I remember we entered the domed city but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I never knew about a domed city or radiation being all around it.
I remembered in history class talking about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and how they had been irradiated when we dropped A bombs on them. We discussed that it took years before they were livable with radiation levels that would not kill the people there. Then there were those that were affected and how their quality of life was terrible.
Detective Mark shook his head and left the room as I remained sitting. I looked at my hands but the only thing I was thinking about was what he was telling me. How could there be radiation all over the place and some dome city is the only safe place to live? Did some country drop a nuclear bomb on us last night while I slept? It made no sense…
Detective Mark walked over to the doctor as he watched the boy through a two way mirror.
“What do you think?” Mark asked.
“Very peculiar.” The doctor muttered.
“What is?”
“He must be highly trained because I can’t tell if he’s faking. He really seems like a lost boy that just somehow wandered into the city. Even worse when I checked his blood sample I found that he did have radiation exposure. The odd thing is that it showed that the level of radiation is consistent with someone exposed to a low dose for only a few hours.
If he was born in the city then he’s never stepped outside it before. He’s probably not a member of the resistance but his memory should not be affected in the way it is. He must be very well rehearsed to act the way he is.” The doctor explained. He continued to watch the boy closely to see if any secret might reveal itself about him. Some slip up that might lead them to the truth.
“That can’t be.” The detective muttered.
“Maybe he’s part of some new splinter cell of the resistance that set up shop inside the dome.” The doctor said,
“Now that is impossible because this place is under such tight security there is no way another group could form without us knowing about it.”
“Then I’m all out of ideas.” The doctor said. His thoughts were interrupted as an explosion was heard coming from inside the police station. An alarm sounded and the doctor saw numerous police officers running about with their weapons drawn. He had to cover his ears as he heard gunshots that even though they were away from him the blasts were so loud and echoed that they sounded as if fired next to him.
The detective drew his weapon and carefully stuck his head out into the hallway to see if he could see anything. He heard others officers shouting and calling for backup and he soon followed them in the direction they were running.
“Those damn fools! We’re under attack!” He heard several officers shouting. A couple of the older officers were putting on riot gear and getting larger weapons to defend the station. Peter watched helplessly as he was locked in the interrogation room as the officers were running towards the disturbance.
