Chapter one: intro
My name is James Hues. It is now five years sense I came to this world. Or as this world translates years. With nothing to track the time relevant to my old world still working I have to go by native time tables. One year is two hundred and fifty six days, one month is thirty two days, one week is eight days, each of the four seasons run an average of two months, days run about sixteen hours, hours are sixty four minutes as is minutes one hundred and twenty eight seconds. And finally a second is measured the same on both worlds as near as I can tell. See a pattern? Here is a hint 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256. This world is built on those kinds of patterns I have noticed.
People often named their children with the same letter at the start of their names. Prices at shops are always the same price, no matter the shop, and they buy items at one forth the cost they sell them for. There is magic, monsters and plot twists. I lost count of the number of adventurers and heros that come by looking for some sort of advanced weapon. It became obvious day one I should never build a weapon for anyone to use in this world. Not only will people keep pestering me for more of them but the unbalance to this world I could bring. I limit what I make to three things. Daily chores made easier, unnoticeable commodities and festive delights.
Perhaps I should begin how I came here. The year was twenty two fifty six. Man kind has breached beyond it's solar system. Not far however. We have not made contact with new species of sentient life nor found any grand machine civilizations as of yet. And I think that is for the better too. Given how all the movies we produce and all the signals carrying those movies are far beyond our control. I'd be cautious too if I was some god like alien species watching us. I am an Earth born but because I am an engineer from a family of engineers in an age most things needing engineered is automated there was no real need for us.
Thinking back on it my father rigging a live feed camera of the leader of the Humanity Space Regulatory Committee in a back office deal did not help either. So I spent most of my youth on a fringe world colony. I had an average upbringing. People out there were both poorer and more open minded to things. They appreciated someone taking the time to fix their stuff as only the wealthy could afford those automated systems. Now here I am. Twenty three, inheriting my dad's shop after an accident in the factory took his life thinking of a girl named Skinny Jenny. One of the dancers at the bar.
One moment I am signing the paperwork the next the lights go out. Not only was I caught off from the grid but even the backup lights did not work. After an hour of stumbling in the dark some armored soldiers in metal and animal leather. Dragged me away and started going threw my stuff. I would have fought and made a racket if they did not get a lucky blow on me at the start.
Next thing I know I was kneeling in front of this goddess of a queen on a throne. My nose not inches from her crotch. Not that she was hiding much only in a robe that did not even cover her from her neck to her thong. After a period of being speechless I was showed to a sex dungeon. I don't like thinking about that. And then the questioning began again. Somehow I conned my way to making non magic or fire based lights for the queens castle for my freedom. It was during my time gathering materials for that I met my first house mate. Kira, a cat girl of the sexy persuasion. A very fine fur coat makes her almost seem human except the fact her fingers have sharp nails on them, her eyes are like a cats, she has whiskers and cat ears. Otherwise almost human. Oh, I almost forgot about her tail.
Originally Kira belonged to the item shop owner. She was traded by her former owner for provisions and a rare sword. She was not much more than a child when I met her but the shop owner knew that would not last long. The shop owner was a traditionalist in the courting ways and preferred his three teenage boys did not break her in. As the first to, well, mate with her when she is in heat, becomes her life long master. A fact I did not know. Back then I was busy with order after order for lights or automated cooking pots or a bard machine, also known as a radio.
I had managed to get a day off and I found she was all over me all day. Rubbing my back with her slender but strong hands. Making sure I was well fed and quenched of thirst. I thought it was cute of her. That night I went to bed feeling good to get back to working on something or another and was half asleep when she snuck into my room and gently climbed into my bed. I'll just say I was not asleep for all of it and it was a great end to a great day. Her one downfall is she is no better than average intelligence. She can talk fine and even read or write but try to explain advanced physics to her and you can see her brain doing laps trying to understand. She is a maid and secretary in general. She is very happy I think. I treat her better than many others of her kind I have seen.
My other housemate is an old knight. Sir Howard something totaling a long name the third. He must be well into his seventies at this point. I found him over a year ago in the winter after a snow storm. A wondering gent with his heyday behind him. To sum it up for him he felt uneasy with his family just waiting for him to die. So he left. That was ten years ago I think. Like all old people he is as tough as they come. After wondering the world, becoming a teacher to some and a freeloader to many he came to my place. At first it was merely to save him from freezing to death after he lost his horse to the storm. As he recovered a strange decrease in theft of random items from my property stopped. So I offered him a job. I am not sure why he accepted because of more. That he can repay the debt of saving his life or the fact I find him useful in some way. Most days he teaches young kids how to fight. Even taught Kira a few things. And so that is my life.
