Dirty Laundry

Chapter Four

By Roofles

Logan wanted to call it a night. His life was never so easy enough to let him as the officer dropped by a small little coffee house on the way past Inc. Co. the office he both worked at but not worked for. The small little coffee hut of a building sat next to a very large parking lot, across the intersection from Inc. Co. The parking lot was used for the several surrounding office buildings that didn’t provide enough space for their workers.

Inc. Co. being one such business. Squeezing every penny dry trying to save money while screwing everyone else over while they were at it. Whatever to save money. Capitalism at its finest.

The big corporation just stepping on the little guy all over again as Logan saw it as he pulled up through the drive through and got his normal drink. Black coffee with an espresso shot. He liked his drink like he liked his men strong, dark with a punch to them. Something that’d wake you up even in the middle of the night and ask for round two or three.

Looping around past his work, Logan headed towards city hall. It was a miracle the streets were as open and cleared up as they were. Only weeks ago there had been violent riots along these roads. Second Street was one of the oldest streets in the city and had been the place the city had been founded on. First the ports had been set up, city hall soon followed up with the fire station and police station sitting between them shortly after.

The stretch of road only grew with the population over the years until it was the metropolis it was in recent years. Even with Logan’s human nose he could smell the stench of it; that or, it was the fish from the docks.

It was a short drive from there to his home away from home… away from home; the police station. Logan needed to clean up before he did the other part of his job.

“Like a bad game of sim city,” Logan chuckled recalling his childhood game as he looped around the multistoried brick building of the police office. There was a back entrance he could use to slip inside unnoticed, swiping his card over the lock. He had a similar key in his car that’d open up the side gate to let him in. Even in the middle of the night, there was a guard on duty.

Logan greeted the pit bull with a nod and the dog reciprocated. All he ever recalled saying or doing to the canine as he walked right past him, ignoring the sniffing he got after; the canine most likely smelling Sloan on the human.

They didn’t seem to mind the others. But have a cat smell on you? These canines would get all aggressive without Logan needed to say a single word. Their animal side always came out during times like these… and Logan could only look on in disgust.

Logan didn’t care as he made his way all the way into the back, ignoring the other officers still on duty even at these late hours. Logan had his assignment, they had theirs as he strode past without letting up for a single second, just wanting to get in and out. Just because the sun went down didn’t mean crime stopped. It was one reason why they had hired so many nocturnal animals over the years. To fill the quota needed.

The two owls turned their heads at his passing, the ferret gave him a brief look before going back to her report and several raccoons scurried by with their insistent chittering making Logan have to move off to the side as they chattering together quickly. All sorts had been hired over the years thanks to the fair hiring act; Logan didn’t see an issue with it. If some of these… guys, worked better at night let them work at night. There wasn’t a problem with that when it worked. Most of the smaller species, such as the raccoons, worked in the records department or forensic labs. While useful, their smaller stature made them more of a liability at times on the field.

The same could be said about several of the smaller canine species. A gun was the great equalizer only when you had a chance to grab it; if you were overpowered, there wasn’t much a raccoon, or a human, could do against some of the predators in the city.

Logan just ignored the lot of them, already stripping out of his outfit before he even got to the back locker room. He was unfortunate enough to see it too had people in it. Logan just wanted to slip in and change before going to his other job. Three canines he was hoping to avoid tonight were busy talking between the lockers on the cement floor.

Logan had preferred not to get caught tonight. Mostly because he stank of lion and dogs and cats mixed as well as blood and oil. On fire…

“Logan!” Hugo was the first to notice him, the large German Shepherd ears perking up, tail wagging as the half naked dog came over to greet him. Hugo had worked on an old case with the human and had become rather attached afterwards. The canine stopped abruptly, nose sniffing before covering it. “Dude, you stink.” He laughed, backing away and making a joke of it.

Logan could see otherwise. Animals, dogs especially, were extremely expressive if you were aware of what to watch for. Hugo had disgust in his eyes, quickly masked by amusement and something else Logan couldn’t pick out as it was so fleeting. The look alone made the human want to sock the dog in the face.

Another issue with canines, they could be rather possessive and Logan did NOT need that tonight.

It was like there was an invisible wall between the two of them. The smell of feline keeping the dog’s otherwise overly friendly personality at bay. Logan needed to find some sort of cologne that worked just as well. He had several bottles in his locker along with deodorants he’d need to spray on just to mask any lingering aftermath.

“That’s why they made something called a shower, Hugo.” Logan said a bit more spitefully than he meant too. He was in a mood and it showed as he stripped partially nude in front of them. Butt naked, Logan left his shirt on as he turned his back on them walking towards one of the showers with a curtain.

It wasn’t wise to strip fully naked in front of a canine this friendly. Logan wasn’t embarrassed by nudity but usually never needed to strip naked around the others. Fully suited with a zipped fly worked just as well nine times out of ten; he thought, speaking from experience.

“Oh come on, even at this hour?” Clem spoke up, the orange fur boxer coming over. “It’s just us.” The boxer reached out a hand, about to pull the shirt off the human.

Logan slapped the hand away, stopping in his tracks as he gave Clem a look that made the three dogs take a step back. Hugo’s ears splayed out, Copper wasn’t looking at anyone and Clem was a bit flabbergasted from the response.

“Dude, just cause you guys like to touch each other all over doesn’t mean you can just up n’ touch me.” Logan said far harsher than he meant too. It was true though. Even when he was first transferred to this department these three canines had been all over him.

Dogs just couldn’t understand that some people don’t like to be touch. And Logan had reasons not to take his shirt off around them or anyone else.

“We don’t touch each other ALL over.” Clem gruff bark growled out his lips, folding his arms and looking away. Logan could tell the muscular canine was blushing underneath his thin white fur marked face. The boxer wasn’t very subtle, the loud boisterous canine not used to getting talked back too seemingly. “First you, then that other human…” Clem just muttered under his breath.

Logan ignored it as he pulled the curtain shut behind him, only then taking his shirt off. He hung it over the bar as he turned the water on. He took the cold blast to the face, ignoring the sharp pain that came with it. Shuddering he took a slow calming breath as the water warmed up.

Using ample amounts of soap, the human scrubbed himself vigorously off to clean up after his time spent with the lion. The lion’s heavy musk clinging to his body even now, underneath the shower’s spray as Logan got some more soap. There was no such thing as too much when one needed to scrub someone else’s scent off.

“How’s your night been?” It was Hugo, the German Shepherd standing nearby his stall as he spoke up over the shower.

“Busy.” Logan just replied rinsing off his face.

“The guys and I were going to head down to the bar, if you were interested…” Hugo brought up. It wasn’t the first time the canine had offered him an olive branch in friendship. Once more, Logan had to turn him down. This time, he had a reason.

“Still on duty.” Logan spoke up as he peeked his head out from behind the curtain. Soaking wet, he looked at the half naked German Shepherd standing there.

Hugo’s ears perked up, tail wagged before they folded back down and his tail tucked between his legs.

“Right.” Hugo just said, figuring that was the case. Despite how many times Logan turned him down; the German Shepherd would still offer him a chance.

“Thanks though, Hugo.” Logan just smiled at the dog. “Can you grab my towel, I forgot to get it.” And before the canine could take a single step he quickly added. “MY towel. Not yours. I’m still on duty, really.” Logan added at the end. “Sorry. I just finished one case and got to check in on another before I call in.”

Hugo took a second before both ears perking up, the light bulb flickering on overhead.

“Got’cha.” The German Shepherd snapped his fingers, giving him a wink before turning around. His ass swaying back and forth with his tail as Logan rolled his eyes, waiting on the other side of the curtain.

Logan rested against the wall, hiding his back as a furry arm stuck in from the side of the curtain offering the towel to the human. Logan accepted it with a quick “thanks, Hugo” and was sure the canine was wagging once more.

“At least you’ll be sleeping with a canine this time.” Hugo brought up making Logan groan internally.

The German Shepherd had been his partner on a couple of previous cases and ever since felt the need to watch over and help the human out as if they were still paired together. Logan preferred to go solo on most his cases; finding others along the way to… partner with. It made his job easier without someone breathing down his back, while HE was breathing down someone else’s back.

“I finished my job with the cat. You don’t got to worry there.” Logan said a frown slowly forming over his face. With the bugs planted at Sloan’s office and at his home, there was very little reason for the officer to stick around the lion.

Logan might have to stick around to keep up appearances but the sinking weight in his stomach told him he had no reason to really see Sloan again…

“Oh good! I knew you’d get it done!” Hugo was all wags hearing that, the canine just glad the human didn’t have to deal with a lion any further. “Predators like that…” Hugo started up with. And there was a hint of a growl in his voice.

“Couldn’t find shit.” Logan cut him off. Though he wasn’t supposed to talk about the case, he felt the need to at least tell Hugo something to get the dog off Sloan’s back. “The cat is squeaky clean.” Logan wasn’t sure why he was defending Sloan…

Even in his line of work, there were plenty of people out there that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not every criminal wanted to be one. Life just has a habit of kicking you while your down forcing their hand. Sloan was another great example. The lion belonged to a family of criminals… but had no direct ties to them. Until something came up, he was just another innocent Logan had sworn to protect.

“Probably licked himself clean…” Hugo growled under his breath, something Logan missed. “I’m just glad you’re done is all, partner.” Hugo mentioned at the end with a sheepish wag, his ears folding back as the curtain was pulled open.

Logan had the towel over his back, butt naked as he stood there looking at the canine. Hugo quickly brought his eyes back up to the human’s face, clearly staring at Logan’s groin. Canine’s really didn’t know anything about respecting others personal space. Logan had to even once stop Copper from sniffing his groin directly.

“Go ahead and look. I don’t give two shits someone sees my junk.” Logan just shrugged it off, keeping the towel over his back like a cape as he made his way towards his locker.

“I dropped your clothes off at the laundry.” Clem spoke up as Logan came around the corner. The human frowned a bit at that, the boxer not looking at him. “Don’t want the whole place reeking of cat…” The canine muttered, of course feeling the need to bring up.

The police station had a small laundry mat they could use to clean their gear due to not wanting to be “sniffed out” as a police officer so easily.

“You know Diana and Robert are cats right?” Logan had to point out, talking about their coworkers. Clem’s ears folded back at that as the human called out all three dogs now on this. The look the human gave him said everything Logan was holding back.

The animosity between canines and felines was lost on the human; he thought they’d be big boys and girls about it, but was clearly wrong. Since he accepted the case, the three have been taking shots at the lion any chance they got. Predators already were looked down on as it was, let alone when they had to deal with this shit.

Logan made his way over to his locker, opening it up and pulling a clean set of clothes out. He usually left a couple pairs here for days like today. Everything had been thoroughly washed and kept in air tight bags just to make sure they didn’t pick up any trace of the three canines around him for instance.

Lingering smells came and went, according to Hugo. It was only after a… close encounter, that one really needed to take a shower. It was one reason why canines were so open about their sexuality. They could literally smell if you just fapped or not. Growing up with such a strong sniffer seemed more a curse than a blessing and Logan had never once been envious of them for it.

“Well, yeah. But…” Clem growled now, getting uncomfortable about this conversation. Logan was one of the few humans who didn’t put up with the others shit and would call them out on it, if he was in a mood as he was.

“Is it because their cats?” Logan had to ask, quickly pulling a shirt on; only then did he remove the towel from his back. “Or because their large cats?” Logan just pressed further turning around, half naked at the three canines standing nearby.

“I don’t got no problem with cats, ok?” Clem started up getting defensive. His jowls had lifted showing his teeth a bit, fur standing up and Logan just stood there not backing down.

“Are you trying to threaten me or…?” Logan once more asked, far more accusingly than one might normally be. The insinuation behind his words made Clem back down, the canine covering his mouth with a hand. Logan wanted to smirk at that, laugh at the canine but found his shoulders slacking as he let out a long exhausted groan. “Sorry. Just. Work is a bitch right now, ok? I don’t need you three getting on me too…”

The three canines ears twitched at that but none of them corrected the human not to use the B word around dogs. Logan had been with enough canines to get a free pass on the matter. Everyone in the office knew Logan and he knew everyone there. He treated them all the same and for that, there was a bit of lenience for his mistakes compared to the other human officers that worked there. Most treated the others as if they were criminal scum too.

“Wasted even more time on this case,” Logan sighed as he turned around grabbing his underwear and pants to put on. They were nice silken pair of boxer briefs and a far classier pair of pants he’d normally never wear. Where he was planning to go, he needed to look nice.

“Nothing, huh?” Clem just asked as Hugo came over to join them.

“Cases like that blow.” Hugo just nodded understanding Logan’s annoyance over the matter. Working day and night on a case only to turn up nothing was a real kick between the legs.

“Spend weeks at that damn place and just…” Logan grumbled bitterly to himself. “My last case went up in smoke!” He almost laughed. Clem looked away as the human continued. “For the past year I had been looking into it and just one night? One night it took for everything to just be swept away! Gone with the wind, just like the smoke…” Logan shook his head, slamming the locker door shut.

He was talking about the wolf mansion case up on the hills that had burned down.

“And this one led to a dead end as well, huh?” Copper spoke up from the side. The blood hound was frowning… then again; he always looked like he was frowning. The wrinkle brown face made the other three look young, even with Copper being the youngest of the group.

“Months wasted, and now weeks wasted… I just feel like I didn’t accomplish shit for all I did.” Logan didn’t mention further and the three understood what he meant.

Logan’s tactics at getting close to the perp weren’t just efficient, they were downright successful. Logan had an almost perfect track record until these past two cases. Tailing after the lion, getting close to him, bugging his apartment and trying to pull information out of the feline hadn’t been successful… he didn’t want his previous case to end up the same way.

There was something about his… methods, that made the one he was after let down their guard. Open up to him. Trust him. Logan was a good looking guy and he used that to his advantage. Being the reassuring friend, the lustful lover or just the quickly more guys in the city needed than Logan wanted to count. There was a reason why bathhouses and the like were common places to pick up information.

Most thought bars would be but if you add a little sexy flavor into the mix, Logan found nine times out of ten the man he was trying to squeeze information out of would just spill it all willingly.

“Do you need me to tag along?” Hugo offered, taking a step forward. Clem and Cooper both gave the German Shepherd a look. Even Logan understood the canine was just offering to try and get closer to Logan.

Something… Logan rather not have. Keeping them at arm’s length just worked better for him in the long run. No matter how friendly Logan was or could be with them… there was always that divide he rather not cross.

“Business before pleasure.” Logan just said as he put his belt on, giving the three a look. “Yes. My business is their pleasure.” And he winked at that, smiling with that glint in his eyes that made the three canines stand a little taller.

Clem snorted at that.

“Slut.” The boxer wagged his stubby tail at the human.

“At least I’m getting some.” Logan countered easily enough. The reaction he got from the boxer was over the top and Logan knew Clem just did it to make the human feel better, in his own awkward way. Clem was good company. It didn’t mean the human didn’t need to put the canine in his place when he stepped out of line.

“Hey! I get plenty of tail!” The dog barked at him.

“More like plenty of dick…” Logan muttered under his breath, knowing the three could perfectly hear him. The two other canines chuckled at that.

“All you humans are so… mouthy these days.” Clem growled thinking of someone else as he said it.

“Just makes my job easier.” Logan gave him a wink. “I’m very good with my mouth, or so I’m told…” And the human gave the three a wave, ignoring the canines swelling sheaths as he headed out.

The sounds of padded feet running up behind him caught his attention.

“Logan.” It was Hugo, the German Shepherd slowing down before stopping in front of him. “You have my number…” The canine started up with. He was fidgeting, not making eye contact and Logan had to resist the urge to scratch between the canine’s ears.

“I know?” Logan just said getting confused on the matter but smiling anyways. A soft smile that warmed Hugo’s heart. Logan was the only human in the office who didn’t look at them with pure disgust or an annoyance.

“I mean,” Hugo’s ears splayed out once more. The German Shepherd was still naked from the waist down. “If you need something or someone to help out, or just… be there. I’m here. For you.” He grinned toothily making Logan chuckle.

The human didn’t want to admit the smiling face of the canine unnerved him and he had taken a subconscious step away from the dog. It was an act he wasn’t even fully aware of. German Shepherd’s were guard dogs after all. They were supposed to be fear more than loved and the human instincts reminded him of their ancestors.

“Of course I do.” Logan just shrugged in reply, quickly enough recovering. “I always got Clem in my corner.” The human teased, playing it off… keeping them at a distance. Never letting them get too close…

Hugo growled at that but barking a loud laugh, slapping Logan on the back. “Just, let me know your ok. OK?” He added again.

“Fine.” Logan finally conceded to the pestering dog needs before heading on out. “Have fun at the bar! Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”

“That leaves very little we can’t do then.” Clem just shouted back and got Logan flipping them off as he walked away with a laugh.

Logan had his phone out, a good thirty minutes later. He parked down the street, still in his car as he dialed the number. He’d already sent a text and got a simple “call m whn arrive” in return. The phone dial tone droned on before finally the other line picked up.

“On my way.” They said before turning the phone off. Logan was already feeling nervous as the rain began to fall around them heavily. It was Seattle, it rained here more days than not.

October was already over and the fall season was heavily underway. And with it? The rain. It rained here more than anywhere else Logan had ever been. The human resting against the window looking out and up at the dark clouds above. He couldn’t even make them out in the dim lights of the downtown. Sometimes, he did wish he had a few of their physical benefits. Having night vision would be amazing in his line of work.

Logan couldn’t imagine being covered in fur. The bill for flea shampoo would be far too much as it was!

A pair of opossums walked past him, a heavy set bear stumbled on the other side of the street clearly drunk; making Logan wonder just how much a bear had to drink to get drunk. A beaver mother and her two children quickly hurried past from the other side. They didn’t need an umbrella, their outfits, like their fur, were water proof after all. Aquatic mammals were common in a city like this.

There was a tap on the window and Logan didn’t even need to look over as he unlocked the door with a single press of a button.

The car shifted at the weight getting into it, the impala’s door slamming shut as Logan looked over at the dark brown wolf sitting in the passenger seat. Domino was a heavy set, stocky guy with thick rolls of fur around his neck almost like a lion’s mane. The fur was numerous shades of browns and more browns… with splashes of black thrown in for good measure.

Domino looked almost comical getting into the car.

Without missing a beat, Domino leaned over and before Logan could even say hi, the human got sniffed. From the nape of his neck, over his head, down to his face and then that cold bumpy nose pushed against his chest. The dark brown furred wolf closed his eyes, taking several slow, steady deep breaths of the human before pulling back.

“You used too much soap again…” Domino stated flatly.

“I tried to make sure to rinse off thoroughly.” Logan just smiled back with a roll of his eyes. Undoing his seatbelt, he leaned over to kiss the wolf on the cheek. The larger male just growled in reply; a mixed sign as if that was both a good and bad thing to do. “I’m glad to see you, again.”

“We’re good to go.” Domino only replied as if not hearing what Logan had said.

“Always the hardass.” Logan started up the car and was taking off at a slow leisure pace down the street. “Everything good…?” He asked, glancing over at the wolf who was just staring forward, resting his muzzle on an arm.

“Fine.” Domino replied and left it at that. Not that Logan minded.

It was still best to check and make sure the club’s current owner wasn’t snooping around. Vicky was just as crazy as Diamond had been; being Diamond’s mate, Vicky was even more trigger happy or so Logan heard after Diamond ended up with a bullet in her head. And according to Domino, Vicky had been hitting the “sauce” far more than anyone else in the club.

The police didn’t even need to step in. Just let Vicky snort herself to death. One less problem for them to have to deal with. They could clean up the aftermath as yet another Alpha ended up killing themselves. It all kind of worked out in the long run.

Domino was a somewhat reliable contact Logan had used over the months keeping an eye on the place. The dark brown wolf knew Logan had some sort of connections but hadn’t ever pried or asked about it. Instead giving Logan loose tips or tidbits in thanks for some head in return. It wasn’t like Domino liked Vicky or anything. Very few people could.

“I hadn’t heard back from you.” Logan was the one to start up, frowning as he waited at a red light a good fifteen minutes of idle driving around.

“Nothing new to say…” Domino just replied in a gruff, heavy tone that sounded more of a growl than anything else. The wolf was still just looking out the window, every now and then looking up at the rearview mirror as if making sure they weren’t being followed.

“After what happened, I just…” Logan stopped himself. It was only at the shift of tone that Domino finally looked over at the human. Logan covered his mouth, not meaning to bring it up. When had he gotten so attached to these hook ups?

“I’m fine.” Domino said as if answering Logan’s unasked question.

Logan didn’t respond, not right away as he continued to drive. “Do you want coffee… or something?” He asked as he took the long way around.

“I’m fine.” Domino once more replied using the exact same tone, growl and words as he had throughout the night. A hand reached over, the clawed fingers gripping the human’s leg.

Logan tensed for a second but as they eased up, so too did the human.

“I’m fine, sugar.” Domino voice was soft as he spoke as Logan pulled into a parking garage. He looped around towards the top; only once he reached it did he park the car but left it running.

“You could’ve at least texted…” Logan clenched a hand on top of the wolf’s own, not looking at him now.

Domino almost chuckled at that, giving another gruff growl of a bark. The single flat tone made it impossible to tell what he had meant. Maybe if Logan was a wolf or a dog he’d have understood it.

“Here I thought… you didn’t cared…” Domino spoke up only when Logan finally looked over at the brown wolf.

“What? I can’t have feelings for a dick?” Logan tried to tease, referencing the fact he’d gone down on Domino more than anyone else in order to keep his contact in touch with him. The wolf just looked at him with heavy, sullen eyes at that.

“What? I can’t even get a hug?” Domino asked opening his arms up a bit.

Logan didn’t even turn the car off as he unbuckled and practically dove onto the wolf who chuckled at that. The smaller male wrapping his arms around the wolf’s neck as he hugged him tightly, feeling Domino wrap his own around him in turn.

“You could’ve been killed!” Logan practically shouted at the wolf, trying to pull back. Domino didn’t let him go so easily. Logan just hit his chest instead, not holding back and made even the large brute of a wolf grunt in turn from the punch. “Asshole…”

Domino smirked at that, resting back as he held the human against him. He let out a heavy groan of a sigh as he closed his eyes, petting Logan’s back.

It wasn’t supposed to have been like this. The two of them were supposed to be getting something of equal trade; equal value so there was no connection or feelings for the other. It was supposed to be a transaction behind a dirty night club in an even dirtier alleyway. Two people just exchanging… favors with one another.

Logan would keep him in touch where not to be, without ever letting it slip he was working for the police. Domino kept him up to date on back going on and, likewise, where not to be. It worked well for Logan who could tip off those back at the station while keeping his hands clean. Well, mostly. Domino was a messy guy and Logan usually needed a shower after each encounter with the wolf.

When the mansion up on the hill had been hit, Logan had instantly wanted to text Domino to make sure he was ok. The human hadn’t. He needed to wait a couple of days before doing so. Domino never replied. The human thought the worse for the next couple of weeks before the wolf had finally replied.

With Diamond dead, Logan moved off the case there hadn’t been any real reason for the two to remain in contact after all. Even Domino was aware of this, to an extent. The wolf figuring the human had just been using him to get close to Diamond; half assuming the human was waiting for Diamond to become the new alpha before asking a request of favor of her.

Logan clearly was working with or for someone else and Domino wasn’t sure which gang it was. There were almost too many to count in the city these days. With The Pack being taken out seemingly overnight, numerous other smaller gangs began to pop up to take its place. Let alone for the lions trying to move back in.

Domino had been just as surprised to hear the human say he wanted to make sure he was alright after everything had went down up in the hills. Though, Domino never let Logan know that.

It was a nice feeling to have. To have someone that would grieve if he had died…

A somber, bitter thought that made moments like this bittersweet for the brown wolf. Domino leaned the seat back, keeping the human on his chest. The wolf using two clawed fingers to slowly open up the tight fitting suit he wore as a bouncer at the club. Opening it up so his creamy lighter tone brown fur poke free and with it the heat and musk of the canine filling Logan’s car. It was a nice soft bed for the human to rest on; though Logan never let his guard down in the wolf’s grip.

With those same two fingers, Domino undid Logan’s shirt. Pulling it open before their bodies could meet, resting against each other without anything between. The warmth of him, the smell of the wolf’s wet fur filled the human’s chest as Logan took a slow breath of him.

Logan waited, letting Domino have his moment. The wolf was starved for physical attention, something Logan never pried into not needing to know. It started off as a quick jerk in the back alley and ended up with the two snuggling in his car in an empty parking garage in the middle of the night.

“More than half the pack is gone…” Domino was the one to bring up and Logan was all ears.

“I’m sorry to hear that…” Logan voice was soft as he felt the wolf exhale. Being close like this worked in more ways than one. Logan able to read the wolf’s more subtle tones and shifts to help gauge if he was going too far or what state of mind Domino was in.

Domino didn’t say anything for a moment, so Logan pressed further.

“Are the wolves only at the club, then?” Logan tried to keep it light hearted but needed to know.

Domino took a second before answering. “Mostly.” That perked Logan’s interest. “There are a few around the city that are… around.” Domino was clearly hiding something he wasn’t letting on and Logan felt the need to pet over the wolf’s chest to try and coax it out of him.

Teasing a nipple with a finger, Logan moved up just enough to press his face underneath that fanged muzzle. Logan taking a hesitant breath, showing how meek and timid he was… before nipping at the loose fleshy hide. Domino tensed at that, feeling the human’s teeth but relaxed into it. Logan wasn’t a threat, not with those teeth; something Logan was more than happy to play up.

“Why don’t you try to meet up with these others? Get out of that crazy place.” Logan moved up just enough to press his chest and groin against the wolf now, breathing against one of Domino’s ears. He knew how much the wolf loved for his ears to be played with and Logan reached underneath his muzzle to play with his other.

“You can’t just… leave.” Domino closed his eyes, noticeably relaxing as he got the pet and rubs that was looked down on in The Pack. They were wolves, not dogs, and being pet like this was seen as a weakness. It didn’t stop it from feeling so damn good though.

“What about these others?” Logan pressed a bit more, rubbing his ear as he nuzzled his face against Domino’s, acting more like a playful dog than a human would. “You do such a great job! I don’t get why you can’t…” Logan went on, complimenting the wolf as he pet and showered him with affection.

Sometimes a good friendly snuggle worked just as well as a hand job.

Domino growled as Logan went on. Talking about how big he was. How great he was. That Domino deserved more than he was getting. In a way, it was true. It wasn’t like Logan was lying to the wolf as he stroked his eager, running a hand over his fluffy chest now.

“I’m not the alpha’s son!” Domino just growled making Logan stop. Not because the wolf had growled at annoyance, it was the fact there was another son Logan wasn’t aware of…

“What?” The human just asked, slightly slack jawed his weak, timid mask he wore around the wolf slipping for a moment before he quickly put it back on. “What other… son? I thought you said he died in the fire…”

“No, no.” Domino waved a hand in front of his muzzle as if trying to shoo away a fly. “I’m talking about the other one.”

And it was at that, Logan spent the night prying this new information from the wolf trying to figure out how he, or the police, weren’t aware the previous Alpha had another son…

Logan had been working at Inc. Co. since July. The incident occurred in October and it was finally November. During his time there he’d connected with all the key personnel of the company; as his job required. Logan was skilled at what he did and was on first name bases with the right individuals and, more importantly, their bosses.

The police had suspected Inc. Co. had a hand in more than what they claimed to be. An insurance company shouldn’t have the legal staff that they did. The company worked with their partner company, a pharmaceutical firm, and was planning a merging of the two companies. Something that was making headlines these days.

Logan wasn’t sure but had put notes on his notes about it being a front for something more. What that was? He couldn’t be sure. It was kind of hard to tell. It looked and acted just like any other office he’d been in.

It was only at this loose lead that he requested sticking around the office. The problem was his “job” with Sloan was done but Logan was still technically his assistant. Which was both a blessing and a detriment to his current job trying to snoop around.

The human tried to distance himself from the lion, something the feline had quickly picked up on in the following week. Ever since their night together where Sloan had woken up hung over and alone in bed without the human by his side. Logan hadn’t left a message, a text or anything. Somewhat hoping Sloan would get the picture.

Dropping off the morning coffee, Logan left Sloan to brood in his office over the matter after politely declining a “quickie” with the lion under the desk. Logan took the elevator down to the third floor knowing his boss would be distracted while he did some snooping.

And before he could head where he was planning too, he bumped into someone who recognized him almost instantly.

“Logan!” It was another human who worked at the office. A rather clumsy human Logan had become friends with over the weeks working here. Alan nearly ran into him, Logan having to catch the human from falling over. Logan had never met someone so air headed as Alan could be.

“Hey there,” Logan just chuckled softly relaxing a bit at seeing who it was. “You really need to get your head out of the clouds.” Alan blushed at the teasing; knowing Logan was right on the matter. He wiped a hand through his long brown hair, pulling a strand of it out of his face. “You also need a haircut.” Logan pointed out in jest.

“Oh, well…” Alan just smiled though and even Logan was taken aback by it.

Alan was only slightly shorter than Logan was. He wasn’t a small guy and had some muscle underneath the office suit he wore. Logan had instantly picked the human out, for more than one reason. Logan could see, like himself, Alan had been hurt. Damaged. It was almost a connection before he even spoke to the guy. Able to see that look in his eyes, from the things he’d been through. Logan could relate.

That was why, when Alan smiled, Logan wasn’t sure what to say at first.

Such a heartfelt, genuine smile like that wasn’t seen in a big city like this. Logan knew it had to be due to some kind of dumb ignorance over how things actually worked. How someone like Alan hadn’t been chewed up and spat out was, in a way, mind boggling. Damaged as he was, Logan had been sure Alan would be as cold and callous as Logan had become in his line of work. Logan needed to wear a mask most the day just to fool those around him.

And here and now, this human before him, was smiling at him as if the city wasn’t rotting around them. The putrid stench of it always made Logan stomach turn.

“Blissfully ignorant as ever.” Logan wrapped an arm around Alan’s shoulder. “Where are you off too, buddy?” He asked, far more presumptuous than the once intern should’ve been. Something about this human put him at ease.

As if knowing, someone like Alan would never stab him in the back… even if he knew who and what he was. Alan was a good guy and it was people like him that made Logan try so hard at his job.

“Filing a report.” Alan just said holding up the folder making Logan almost pity the man. How someone could put up being in an office like this for their day job was beyond him. Being here these past couple of weeks alone had been suffocating. And that wasn’t counting the times he’d been nearly smothered to death by lion paws.

“Sweet. I’ll keep you company.” Logan just gave a grinning smile back as he accompanied the human down the side hallway and towards the copy room.

“Oh, sure.” Alan was always friendly with Logan. Something the human could tell he desperately needed. Some actual genuine human contact. Or so Logan thought.

As offensive as that might sound, Logan understood what that meant. Being surrounded by other species made one feel disconnected to their own. There were certain mannerisms, certain practices and qualities only one of your own could understand. Logan was acutely aware how most non-humans saw the two of them. Seemingly friendly go lucky guys were always looked down on and underestimated. It actually worked in Logan’s favor but someone like Alan? He worried for his friend.

When the world judged you by appearance alone, it was hard to survive being soft and furless, without natural defenses like claws or fangs. A mugger would think twice about jumping a skunk or a wolverine, they wouldn’t need too against a human. It was one reason why the number one group of people, outside the smaller herbivore species like rabbits, was humans.

Sticking together was in its own way, a form of defense.

“You do this every day?” Logan almost laughed at the idiocracy of it all. It really did remind him of the movie the word correlated too. “I’d have jumped by now.” Logan said easily enough as the two rounded the corner into the room.

Alan blushed at that, chuckling lightly with an almost airy voice that put Logan at ease around him.

“I’ve thought about it, trust me.” Alan just nodded along making Logan’s heart go out for the poor guy. The two continued to talk as they made their way towards the side supply closet where the copier had been placed, for reasons Logan would never understand.

Logan instantly stiffened his hand dropping down to his side for a split second as if to grab the gun he usually kept there. His hand came up empty and his casual smile and poker face, if only for a split second, faltered at seeing the hulking black fur wolf standing there before the two of them. Instinctively, Logan kept Alan behind him planning to fight this guy allowing Alan to escape.

Only for his friend to push past him and greet the wolf with that smiling face as he did for Logan and practically everyone else in the office.

“Reese.” Alan said slipping out from underneath Logan’s arm as the human collected himself. Logan wasn’t one to falter so easily. Something about those eyes, training on him however made his blood run cold. “You’re early today.”

The jet black fur wolf cold, calculative eyes pulled away from Logan to look at Alan. If only for a split second, Logan swore the wolf’s tail wagged.

“I’ve been waiting.” Reese just stated as a cold, harsh fact. The words made Logan clench his jaw, worried this guy was about to do something to Alan. Only for the wolf to bend down and pat the human on the head once. “I texted you…” Logan face faltered at that seeing the wolf’s muzzle split in a smile and his eyes ease up.

It was a look Logan had never seen a wolf make before. Almost like a content, happy dog greeting their owner when they got home.

“I’ve been busy.” Alan just laughed, smiling as he did with Logan and pushed the wolf’s chest with a hand. The large canine, if only for a brief second, smiled at that. His tail giving a single wag now. “We’re at work still.” Alan just pointed out, getting on the hulking wall of muscle and black fur.

Reese chuckled at that. It wasn’t a sound Logan would’ve associated with humor however. It was too gruff, as if Reese were chewing rocks.

How long had Logan been working here? There was a wolf in this office the whole time? Was he connected to the pack… no. Logan was already shaking the thought from his head as he quickly went over everything he knew. He had researched the company, the… interesting staff it had as well as each carnivore within the company.

There wasn’t a single mention of the wolf standing before him putting Logan on edge.

Logan’s eyes became unfocused for a second as he tried to figure out what that meant. Only for those golden leaf eyes to turn back towards him, an ear flicked as the wolf regarded this other human now. His nose twitched and Logan was aware he’d just been sniffed. He hated when they did that, feeling his personal space being violated so casually.

This wolf, just as Logan was doing in that moment, was quickly assessing him. Figuring out if he was a friend or foe. If he poised some danger to him and if need be, someone Reese needed to taken out.

Logan recognized it instantly. It was the exact same thought process Logan had when he encountered someone who could be dangerous. The human was already putting on the fake airs again, smiling as he had done with Alan.

“Hey there, I’m one of the interns. I don’t think we’ve met.” Logan even impressed himself with how well he kept up the poker face during it all, walking closer to this killer… He offered a hand and Reese begrudgingly took it.

Only after Alan looked between the two did Reese oblige the human custom of shaking hands. Logan could feel those clawed fingers curl around his hand, fingers and wrist. Feel them brush against his skin as, with remarkable control, the wolf shook his hand in a simple fashion.

The single gesture of shaking hands was on purpose. Logan knew it was offensive to most canines and he had done it acting like the dumb, ignorant intern he was posing as. If the wolf was offended, he would change. Show something Logan could use, to read against the predator. And yet, Reese kept that cold, blank expression on his face.

Making him impossible to read.

Had Logan been mistaken… the thought lingered. It wasn’t a comforting one. Logan had instantly picked up the fact he shouldn’t mess with this wolf and yet here and now he was playing ball, like some human. A wolf in human clothes. That’s what this guy was.

And in a way, Logan knew just how dangerous that could be.

“Reese.” The wolf left it at that. Not going any further on the matter.

“Logan. I’m a friend of Alan’s.” He added in, watching the expression change on the wolf’s face. It was one of surprise then, for a second, the wolf looked as if he had a thousand and one thoughts running behind those eyes.

And to Logan’s disbelief, Reese smiled at him. His ears perked up, tail forcing a wag as the wolf tried to be… friendly with him. It was one of the most unnerving sights Logan had ever seen in his life. It made the human want to slowly back away from the wolf instead of finding him more comforting by it.

“He’s been working as an intern here for a couple months now. Apparently he just got a job as an actual assistant!” Alan was the one to speak up in the silence that followed between the two judging the other. “I’m so happy to hear that Logan,” and the other human knew Alan meant every word he said.

How someone like him could be around something like this… wasn’t just mind boggling. It was downright terrifying. One was a warm ray of sunlight, a breath of fresh air on a cloudless day. And the other was the thing that kept you up at night, making you double check underneath your bed and in your closet and that every single door was locked and shut tight...

“Oh, yeah. I’m really surprised they gave me the job!” Logan just laughed easily enough, putting on the face that had won everyone else over in the company. “I worked my ass off and they finally did it! I can actually, maybe, move out of my parents place,” Logan lied.

He was good at that. Manipulating the truth, telling just what he needed too to get the information he wanted. He was able to pool the wool over even a sheep’s eyes. Mixing truth and lies together like a master tailor, weaving them flawlessly together while remember each and everyone. At times even Logan wasn’t sure where the lie started and truth began with how well he did it.

He was a master at his craft… and that was why Logan felt a cold chill run down his back.

Reese was watching him. Those golden leaf eyes unblinking in the tangled mess of black fur on his face. The wolf just stared at him, taking in every emotion that passed over his face. Every breath he took, every move he made the wolf registered and processed in an instant.

Logan could feel the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t say anything wrong in this moment. He wasn’t fast enough to grab his gun, if he even had one; the wolf would take his head off the second he tried. If he tried to make a single wrong move this man before him… would kill him.

“You’re working for Mr. Kincaid, right?” Alan went on. Logan just smiled back, talking to him in the same even tone as he’d used before. Logan unsure how Alan couldn’t see it couldn’t feel the danger the two of them were in that moment.

Logan was a trained professional and even he was trying not to hyperventilate underneath that scrutinizing gaze watching the two.

“He’s really not that bad.” Logan just went on. His face didn’t change, he kept an even tone and despite his entire body telling him to run for his life… he stood there, perfectly seemingly calm as he talked with Alan in the copy room. “It takes a bit of work to get on his good side though. Once you can, you quickly learn he’s just a big softie.”

And Logan laughed, closing his eyes and tilting his neck up just slightly in the gesture.

And he waited. Waited for the teeth to sink in. For those claws to rip his throat out as the wolf just continued to watch. Reese didn’t move. He didn’t say anything as Alan finally brought him back into the conversation.

“This guy is the same exact way.” Alan nudged Reese’s side. The wolf barely reacted to it. Finally, Reese blinked looking down at the smaller male. “He’s just a big softie! Sure, underneath all this,” Alan gestured at everything Reese was. The human blushed at that, touching his coworker so openly and quickly withdrew his hands. “Underneath… his suit, I mean. He’s really a great guy.”

The jet black fur wolf snorted in reply at that, that smirk of a smile pulling on the edge of his muzzle once more. His face seemed to relax and even his shoulders sagged as if he’d let out the breath he’d been holding the whole time. The tension just bleeding away when he looked down at the human between the two of them. Alan just smiling up at him seemingly clueless as to what he was.

Logan noted how Alan reached out to grab hold of a single finger of the wolf, smiling at him before letting go. The brief interaction was just as confusing as the rest of this encounter was.

“Is he now?” Logan just smiled and laughed once more. “I never would’ve guessed!” Logan never fully took his eyes off the predator in the enclosed space. He was already thinking about grabbing one of the metal hangers next to his head to jab it into the wolf’s eye the second Reese tried to attack him.

“Oh, yeah. Reese puts up all these airs, right?” Alan just continued as the wolf just stood there… watching him. Unlike before, the wolf’s face was relaxed and calm as Reese held onto every single word Alan said as if it were the sweetest of oxygen, giving him life in these bleak times. “But, get this!” Alan was giddy, excited and his eyes widened.

“What?” Logan had to ask feeling that calm wash over him as well. If someone like Alan could see this guy in such a light, why couldn’t he?

“Reese. Bought. Me. The nativity scene!” Alan eyes just widened.

“Uh…” Logan wasn’t sure how to respond to that. “You’re religious?” He just asked, utterly confused.

“No, no, no.” Alan just laughed though having to take a moment to calm down. “He bought me a whole Halloween theme nativity scene! With zombies and skeletons and blood and gore and, and, and,” Alan went on. “We’re going to set up it up for Christmas too!”

“He loves Halloween.” Reese just shrugged as if answering the unasked question.

“Dude.” Logan took a second on that. “That’s so messed up,” and he gave a genuine laugh that made the other two smile as well. “That’s so awesome! You’ll have to show me!”

“You should come over!” Alan was already on board with it. “Can he, please, can he?” Alan had to stop himself from saying “daddy” at the end there. Something that would make the wolf growl lustfully. If he had, Reese would never say no to him though.

“If you want.” Reese just said instead. Always leaving it open ended in a way. Never denying his human while never fully accepting it either. Not because he was worried, no. This other human wasn’t a threat. It was the simple fact, outside of Alan and those back home… Reese didn’t care about a single other soul in this damned city.

“You have to come over!” Alan was already practically spinning around on the spot. For such a large, burly guy Alan was extremely flamboyant at times. It made the wolf smirk as he watched him practically bouncing in joy. “We’re gonna have a HUGE thanksgiving! You should be there!”

Whereas Reese was an emotional vault, rarely showing the glimpse of anything that might be called a personality… Alan was exploding with it. Once more a sharp contrast for the gloomy looking wolf who had shrunk back into the corner, into the shadows watching over the two like a sheepdog over his herd.

A zebra walked by, about to come in to use the copy room. Spying the two humans he took a step inside, seeing the wolf the striped Equidae quickly made his retreat. The three ignored it. Just another day in the city.

“Totally! I’ll come over and you can show me all you’re messed up holiday themes!” Logan was already close to Alan. He was an easy guy to read and it hadn’t taken long to get on his good side. The human seeming to give nearly anyone a chance.

Logan had to stop himself from putting his own body between Alan and Reese; wanting to protect this stupid, happy human from the big bad wolf.

It was the wolf standing nearby, however, that Logan needed to win over. He wasn’t sure how. Reese was impossible to read. Even as a human, Logan had learned the subtle cues to pick up reading their body language for most canines to be able to understand them to an extent.

This guy on the other hand was a mystery that made the detective inside him want to investigate. It’d be foolish to try and get close to Reese. After what Domino had let slip the other night, Logan felt the need to look into this wolf… he had an uncanny resemblance to the previous Alpha. Logan wasn’t sure how until Alan brought it up. Alan was the perfect link to use to connect the two. Logan had already won Alan over, he could use him as he’d done so many others to do his job.

Logan wouldn’t have authorization to bug their home as he had done with Sloan. He’d have to play this by ear and hope for the best. He couldn’t risk pushing his position any more than he already had, being on thin ice with the police chief. He was sure the dog didn’t like him as it was.

Logan was more of a cat person anyways…

“This weekend?” Logan pressed, not about to let such a situation slip through his fingers. He’s gone into a lion’s den, how about a wolf’s now?

A wolf like him, someone like Reese had slipped past his radar… that put him more on edge than anything else. Was he another Alpha? Was he part of the pack that had been, for the most part, destroyed? Or was he creating a new one? A newcomer into this melting pot that was melting the very pot it was in… Logan had to figure it out, no matter the cost.

For the greater good, Logan would walk into the wolf’s den, the lion’s pit, the cackle of hyenas are a shiver of sharks. He was just one human, so long as he could save others lives he didn’t care what happened to him. His life, for the most part, was already over anyways…

“Today!” Alan was all over this. “It’s Friday! Why not come over today, after work.” Alan practically spun around to ask Reese for permission. “Can he? Please?”

“Yes, pup. You can have a friend over.” Reese just chuckled lightly. Logan wasn’t exactly sure what the dynamic between the two of them were and was worried Alan was Reese’s pet…

Such thoughts quickly vanished as Alan gave Logan a hug, walking out with him.

“You’re going to love the guys!” Alan started up, only for Reese to clear his throat loudly behind the two.

“Logan, was it?” Reese asked taking a step forward now. “Can you help me with something? Alan, you get back to work before they dock your pay again.” The wolf chided the human who just stuck his tongue out but reluctantly agreed.

“I’ll text you!” Alan was already heading back leaving Logan and Reese behind. It was hard to tell who Alan was saying that too.

“What’s up, boss?” Logan asked once Alan rounded the corner. The human turning just in time for the a wall of black fur to slam him against the adjacent wall.

Logan hadn’t even seen Reese move until the wolf was on him, holding him securely against the wall with one arm pressed against his throat. Reese didn’t bare his fangs. His ears weren’t perked up, lazily sitting to the sides of his head as his tail slowly swayed back and forth as those cold, almost dead golden leaf eyes stared down into Logan’s.

For all intent and purposes, Reese looked bored pinning the human against the wall. His massive body blocked out the small light bulb hanging from the center of the room and Logan could smell that strong musk coming off the wolf now. The heat of him.

“You know, I’m into this right?” Logan just said giving Reese a look. The wolf snorted in his face at that.

“What do you want?” Reese voice was low and the growl was mostly contained in his chest. Logan could smell what the wolf had for lunch on his breath as it washed over his face.

“To see the nativity scene, duh.” Logan just answered back with a smile of his own. “Why does it bother you so much?” Logan eyes narrowed as he began asking the questions.

“It doesn’t.” Reese just stated still holding the human with his arm. The other scratched the wall next to Logan’s head. The human didn’t even flinch as bits and pieces of the paint fell against the side of his face.

“Then why are you pinning me to the wall?” Logan asked once more, baiting an answer from the wolf as he recorded the entire conversation. Reese wouldn’t be foolish to kill him in the office. Let alone with the cameras in the hallway showing the two still in the room.

Reese wasn’t an idiot and the smirk on his face told Logan exactly that. There weren’t cameras in this room. It was just the two of them. So long as the wolf didn’t directly leave any evidence on the human, there was no issue Logan could bring up to HR, let alone the cops.

Even being one…

“I’m not.” Reese answered. “We’re just having a nice conversation in the room, is all?” The wolf said softly, in an even calm voice that even put Logan on edge. The wolf knew he was recording this or maybe he just suspected it.

No normal guy would, Reese was someone. Logan just wasn’t sure who… The way he phrased things, how he said it… Logan couldn’t use this recording against him.

“Eating biscuits and crumpets, while drinking tea.” Logan just added on, glaring back at the smirking wolf.

“What even are crumpets?” Reese snorted carrying on their conversation as if he weren’t threatening Logan’s life as those nails pricked the human’s neck.

“It’s some sort of New Zealand bread snack or something. I don’t know man, I’m just a human.” Logan was the one to give a snide remark at the end practically spitting the word in his face.

“I love humans.” Reese just stated. “I’m loving one each and every night in fact.”

“Ew.” Logan just frowned at that. “How does that even fit?”

Reese nosed against him, sniffing him deeply. “Wouldn’t you like to know…”

“Not interested.” Logan just stated, having already some wolf meat on the side if he ever was hungry enough for it. He knew some wolves were extremely aggressive with their… mating and flirting. Problem was? Logan still couldn’t pick up a read on Reese.

He wasn’t sure if he should shout that he was a cop or just flirt with the wolf. He wasn’t sure if he should bring Sloan into this, trying to use his position to his advantage or just…

“Alan’s my friend.” Logan stated making Reese pull back a centimeter. “I was just worried, for my friend.” Logan repeated at the end bringing it up again.

“Worried…?” Reese growled now, low and deep.

“He never once mentioned you.” Logan partially lied as he looked back into the wolf’s face. That hit Reese and the wolf slowly eased off the human, taking a single step back. “Not once. Now I see him with this… guy, I’ve never even heard of. It worried me.”

Reese took a moment on that. Once more it looked like a thousand and one thoughts were behind those eyes.

“He didn’t mention me…” Reese faltered for a brief second, Logan clearly finding his Achilles heel. Logan centering in on that one single scab, that wound there and picking at it. Be it their kryptonite or what have you, everyone always had a trigger.

It was all just about finding it. Logan didn’t need a gun to pull it.

“We’ve been texting all the time.” Logan dusted his front off. “We’re friends, Reese. Platonic friends…” He made sure to say. “He didn’t mention you and so when I saw you in here…”

“You were worried…” Reese said the words as if putting two and two together finally.

“I don’t know why he did. Maybe it just never came up. I usually talk about my sex life more than anything else.” Logan just chuckled, never taking his eyes off fully from the canine. Reese to be too confused by what he had said to notice how relax Logan was after his life had been threatened.

“I…” Reese didn’t finish the words. Logan already knew he had hit the mark and didn’t need to push it further.

“You scared me.” Logan was honest then, making the wolf look at him. “You’re terrifying. No matter if I’m working for a lion or hooking up with a bear… you scare me.” The human was blunt and it only made Reese feel like shit after what he’d done. Unsure if he was mistaken or not as Logan kept throwing things at him keeping the wolf from focusing. “So when I saw you in here with Alan, the two of you flirting with each other.”

“We weren’t flirting…” Reese growled back, Logan ignored it continuing with the interrogation. Sometimes it was best to be on the offensive rather than the slutty intern crawling under the desk.

“After everything that’s happened in this city? On the news in the past couple months?” Logan just brought up, watching Reese closely as he did. Even Reese faltered for a brief second at that. At the implications. “I wasn’t sure. And I’m sorry.” He added at the end. It was a lie but it worked just well enough.

Reese gave him a look.

“Clearly Alan isn’t afraid of you. You must be a good guy then to catch someone like him.” Logan fixed his tie, smoothing out his clothes as he looked away from the wolf. His job here was done. Get Reese to feel guilty over what had happened; use those animal instincts against him. Don’t push too hard, just poke at it. Pry at the cracks forming there. “You’re lucky.” He added, glancing back.

Reese frowned at that without a word.

“Alan is a wonderful guy. Not my type,” Logan quickly added in before the wolf could get defensive. “I’m into bigger boys…” The human gave him a wink as he moved towards the door. “But damn if he isn’t a freaking ray of sunlight in this shitty place.” Logan said more to himself than Reese.

Logan hadn’t been lying when he wanted to protect Alan. There was enough shit in this city to laugh them a lifetime. It was nice to see a daisy growing in all the shit for a change…

Reese couldn’t argue with that. He’d have gone mad a long time ago if it weren’t for Alan’s company in this hellhole.

“The whole place could catch fire…” Logan just muttered aloud, knowing the wolf was listening. “And Alan would come to make sure I was safe…” Reese frowned at that knowing if the place did catch fire, he’d have to drag the human out. “He’s a good kid.” Logan, once more, glanced at the wolf. “Got to make sure he’s safe.”

“Yeah…” Reese left it at that.

“The other wolf transferred from this place up the coast to the adjacent branch.” Logan stopped at the entryway looking back at him. He was holding the door with a hand, talking about a white fur wolf named Ralph; he was a mix breed though and Logan knew, as such, he wasn’t connected to The Pack. They didn’t except freaks like him. “I didn’t see any records of another one being here…” Logan took a second on that, pushing the wolf’s buttons once more.

Walking the fine line, trying to learn something about this black fur wolf in the very office he was working in. The fact such a hulking creature like Reese had gone unnoticed by the detective left Logan a bit uneasy. If Reese ever came for him, he was sure, he would never even see his shadow before it was too late…

“I’m fully registered, legal citizen.” Reese answered almost robotically. The human took a second at that then snorted loudly with a laugh.

“Dude, I’m just saying. Make sure your getting your paycheck!” Logan gave him a wave, checking his phone. “Oh look, Alan texted me. He asks if I like you or not…” The human paused, looking at the wolf.

Reese ear twitched at that.

“Should I text him I like his man or…” Logan teased, unable to help himself at the wolf growling at him now. “I think he’s a delight.” Logan said aloud as he typed out the text and sent it. “I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the wolves at your place.”

“Dogs.” Reese corrected. That caught Logan off guard.

“Dogs?” Logan frowned, needing to take a moment on that. “Don’t wolves and dogs… hate each other?” He mumbled, thinking about it. That’s what Clem and the others always said.

“Don’t you need to get back to work?” Reese just shot back.

“Yeah, yeah boss man.” Logan waved him off heading down the hall as he sent a couple more text messages to Alan; keeping an eye over one shoulder just to make sure.

He’d have to check out this dog house and make sure it was up to code. It would be terrible if someone were to find out it needed to be condemned… Logan chuckled at the dark thought. He was about to put away his phone only to see he had gotten a text from Sloan.

“Can you come to my office?” It was a question, not a demand. That made Logan stop in front of the elevator.

“Sure, sir. Do you want some coffee?” Logan replied as he had done the very first time he had gotten a text from the lion. It was a subtle thing, a simple phrase of words but it was clear Logan had the intention of keeping their relationship… business over personal…

And Sloan hadn’t missed that…
