Abducted By Beasts

This place didn't have much, but the scenic overview was always welcoming. It was always quiet and the view of the stars was second to none. For the past year, Troy had been coming here to get away from life. From school. From work. From thoughts of her.

As he lay on the hood of his car, he extended his arm. He glanced over at the glint of moonlight reflecting off of the metallic barrel. He reached up and disengaged the magazine.

One bullet.

He slid the magazine back in the grip and it clicked into place. He lowered his arms. They banged against the hood as he sighed heavily. A star streaked across the sky.

“I wish for something better," he thought. He groaned. “Nothing ever changes, does it?"

He brought his right hand over his chest and reached over it with his left. He gripped the top of the gun and pulled back the slide, then let go.

*Click-CHACK!*

His hands relaxed against his chest. The weight of his hands pressed the chill of the metal through his shirt. He closed his eyes and let his breath go - relaxing his body.

“Saying, “Yes." Saying, “I do." The commitment. “Mrs. Light." The move. School. The trips home. All lies."

He slowly opened his eyes. They darted from star to star trying to make the connections for miscellaneous shapes. His eyes moved down...down...do-...

“What is that?!" He thought as he quickly sat up. “A giant...mantis?"

Hovering above the small city was an enormous, greenish black mantis that filled the sky. Colors scintillated across its form until it completely disappeared. A light appeared and shined down upon the city. He watched with mouth agape and heart pounding as the city began to disappear when the light passed over it. It was like a movie: The form would ripple, then vanish.

The light came closer and closer to him. Frantically, he turned to slide off the hood and fell to the ground. He could feel himself shake and his heart race as he struggled to his feet. The light faded, then flashed directly on top of him.

He fumbled with the handle of the car. It felt like every hair on his body was standing on end. He felt his stomach turn and his head began to ache. He finally got the door open when everything disappeared.

He groaned and opened his eyes. His vision began to focus. His eyes flew wide and his heart felt like it stopped beating.

People moved around him. But, they had...tails? Were those ears on their head?...or horns? One of the creatures appeared to his left. He made eye contact with it. It's grass green with black speckled eyes and a vertical pupil seemed to blink twice. It raised its scaly, dark gray snout and showed its jagged teeth.

He felt the air leave his body and his eyes rolled up as they fluttered shut.

Who are they? What is happening? Where was he? Was he dreaming? Why were animals and other creatures walking like humans?

Troy had plenty of time to ponder these questions when he found himself shackled to a table. Or did he?
