One Promise, Diverging Paths

Eli groaned, he felt a huge pain on his head. He tried to move as he blinked himself awake. "Shit," he growled. His paws and feet are chained to the wall, the chains strong enough to contain the werewolf superhero. Eli snarled as he tried setting himself free. No matter how much he struggled, the chains remained intact. Someone seems to have done a lot of research on him.
Eli whimpered, and he decided to check his surroundings. Seems like he got locked up in some sort of an... interrogation room? Metal walls on all sides of the cramped space, a table with two chairs at the middle of it, the lone light bulb above the able acting as the sole light source. "How the hell did I get here?" he mumbled.
..........................
Eli was pissed. He had plans of taking a run through the forest for once, but of course, being a superhero means that there will always be last-minute changes because there's just never any shortages of criminals. "This better not be another one of those annoying supervillains to deal with..." Eli grumbled.
Even though he was born as a werewolf, his changes manifested as Eli entered college. Confused at first over the sudden changes he was entranced by the full moon, he was glad his first change happened while he was out camping. Apparently, the werewolf genes had always been a thing for his ancestors, and he got the lucky 0.001% chance on manifesting these powers.
Living as a werewolf is a huge upgrade, actually. Eli chuckled, having superhuman strength and enhanced senses, capable of sensing others' presence and emotions through smell alone, are awesome perks to have. It's just balanced out a bit on how much of a pain it can be on his head from the amount of noises made in the city, but he got used to it by wearing his headphones. Another thing that Eli had to control is his emotions so he doesn't change in public, but that was never a problem for him.
Deciding to use this powers for good, he decided to don the superhero persona, Silverwolf. No, he's not weak to silver, but Eli had to admit that it was hilarious watching new criminals shooting silver bullets at him, seeing their eyes bulge as they saw the werewolf shrugging it off. Sure, it was still painful, but the healing powers just patched the wounds at a very fast rate. As the werewolf got accepted to the superhero team, Eli asked for some materials to make his suit, strong enough to remain intact with his changes and also capable of resisting any attacks with an image of a wolf howling at the moon in the middle of it. Sure, he can heal himself, but it's way better to minimizing the amount of distraction caused by the pain as much as possible.
........................
This is why Silverwolf was stunned over the whole situation. The only ones that knew about his strengths and weaknesses are his family, the leader of the superhero corporation, and... Wait?
He sniffed the air. Someone is next to him, still unconscious. Seems like he is in a similar situation as well. He almost called out, until he realized whose scent this is. "Fuck, this situation just gets even worse by the minute..." Eli growled.
The wolf cocked his head to his left. Chained next to him is a weredragon, wearing his supervillain suit. Eli begrudgingly admit that he looks very... good in it, not that he would say it out loud. The dragon was the same nerd as before, going for a futuristic theme compared to Eli's classic superhero outfit minus the cape. The dragon looks like someone that time-travelled from the future, and he would always be a menace to Eli whenever their paths collide with his powers to breathe fire and manifesting drones. "Eli grimaced, "I helped him designing those drones, and of course he fucking uses them on me..."
.................
Even now, he doesn't get it. How did they end being enemies? They were best friends all the way from high school, and the two of them helped each other out with their newly-discovered powers. What could have happened over the past two years after graduation?
The two were attached to each other throughout their university years. Roommates sharing the same dorm room, both sharing the same interests over video games. Eli and Andy would hang out as much as possible, by having movie and/or gaming nights, sharing the bills over lunch and dinner whenever possible, Eli watching Andy's badminton matches with Andy seeing his football performance, the list just goes on and on.
Eli sighed when he thought of the day he changed. He would have panicked that day in the forest if Andy was not there with him. In fact, he was surprised as he saw his best friend changing into a dragon as well, and both of them ended up laughing over the crazy situation. Eli still considers those moments to be the best time of his life, and he thought that... their relationship will be even stronger since then.
The two weres pretending to do the transformation scenes in the movies while rolling their eyes over how long it takes to keep the changes. Andy practicing to fly with his new wings, trying to carry Eli but ending up falling to the nearby lake. A competition on who can be the loudest between Eli's howls and Andy's draconic roars. Laying down on the grass, stargazing, with either of them putting their head on top of the other's belly. Eli can still remember the graduation day.
"I will become a superhero with my werewolf powers, and I can't wait to have you as my partner, bud!" He exclaimed to Andy, fist-bumping.
"A dragon and a wolf teaming up, huh? A weird combo, but sure! I promise, bro." Andy laughed.
......................
Little did he know, that was the last time he saw his best friend. He tried calling him through phone to give Andy the good news that he got accepted to the superhero team, but the call never connected. Eli tried his best to tell his best friend that he had to move, but he never got the chance to do so.
Silverwolf asked whether there was a dragon that applied to the team, but the leader, Nocturne, shook his head. The werewolf lowered his head over the sudden loss of contact, and decided to focus on his first superhero job.
The wolf drew the lucky straw, dealing with a bank robbery that ended up capturing all the perpetrators while protecting all the hostages. With all these circumstances, he made into the headlines. Eli groaned over his awful look, being all bashful over the sudden attention from the reporters. He still remembered the news title, "Fierce Wolf to Save the Day, a Friendly Good Boy to Civilians," Eli still blushed over that. Sure, he got a better position because of that with a growing fanbase, but he wished he could control his stupid tail and practiced his speech a bit more.
...................
Little did he know that his second assignment was going to be a massive headache. Silverwolf was assigned to secure this scientist who accidentally turned himself into a lizardman wanting to change everyone forcefully into his kind. Everything was going smoothly with the infiltration until he heard an evil laughter, but the voice sounds...
"W-why are you...!?" Silverwolf stuttered.
Next to the Lizard, he saw the familiar weredragon. His evil laughter chilled the werewolf to the bone, a complete opposite to the best friend he knew in the past.
"Welcome to our lair, Silverwolf. Enjoying your stay, I'm sure?" The dragon chuckled, aiming his drones at the werewolf.
Silverwolf snarled, "This is NOT funny! What is going on here, An-"
The dragon cut him off. "Call me Deathwing, mutt. You are here to see a new era for us lizards and dragons! These puny humans will be grateful that we are sharing our power with them!" He laughed.
Silverwolf was stunned. "What the hell is wrong with you? Open your eyes, An-... Deathclaw!"
The Lizard slithered. "Ssseeemsss like you two have a passsst, I ssseee? You did not tell me anything about thisss, dragon."
Deathclaw waves his hand at the Lizard. "It was but a thing in the past. He's nothing to me."
Eli's heart shattered as the dragon breathed fire at him right after, with his drones shooting lasers right at the wolf. The Lizard lunged at him as well, and Silverwolf decided to just focus on defeating these... villains in front of him.
The fight was arduous, but Silverwolf conquered the Lizard. While pinning him, the dragon took flight and announced, "You win this time, Silverwolf, but mark my words. This is not the last time we see each other!"
Silverwolf sighed, this did not feel like a victory. Well, at least he caught one of the villains. In fact, he had a proper talk with the Lizard, and he had to admit that he was glad his plan worked out. The headlines gave him a mixed feeling though.
"The Lizard Captured by Silverwolf!"
"Convinced by the Werewolf Superhero, Lizard Cancelled His Plan and Decided to Learn More about the Humans."
"New Supervillain, Deathclaw, Still at Large!"
Sure, Eli was glad that he was able to convince the Lizard to fight against his destructive urges. In fact, they had become some sort of buddies after Silverwolf hung out with the lizardman, introducing him to human culture and helping him see that his plan was way too radical and there are way better solutions on dealing with his agenda. Eli did not expect for the human scientist and the lizard to be friends after this though, sharing the body's control without having to dominate each other over it. However, his best friend is gone...
Deathclaw would appear on a frequent basis with the other supervillain Silverwolf was assigned to. The two would have similar banters with Silverwolf trying to convince Deathclaw, but even that deteriorated over time with the two acting even more antagonistic against each other. Eli had to admit that he felt a bit glad that Deathclaw would be able to escape every time, but he knew he is running out of time. He had to capture him soon enough.
.......................................
Eli shook his head after that trip in the memory lane. He focused himself at the unconscious dragon. The werewolf growled a bit after seeing the damages on the dragon's snout, looks like Andy resisted quite a bit before he got captured.
He involuntarily whimpered over the sight, but snapped his senses right back as he saw Andy regaining consciousness.
"Wh-what's going on? Ah! My wings! My body... Damn it!" Deathclaw started to struggle against the chains, failing just like Silverwolf did.
Silverwolf guffawed, "Hah! To see the "mighty" Deathclaw captured in front of me, panicking, I wish I can frame this moment."
Deathclaw halted, and snarled. "Silverwolf... I d-did not panic, and you're in a similar situation yourself, mutt!"
"I told you to stop calling me mutt, you nerdy loser! I'm not the one choosing my alias based on a monster in Fallout." The wolf smirked, and hmmm... He swore he saw a blush, but it might be the trick of the light.
Deathclaw countered, "O-oh yeah? It's way better than your plain ass Silverwolf, how original."
Silverwolf warned, "Shut the fuck up, Andy. You lost the right to defend yourself after what you did to me!"
Deathclaw panicked as he darted his eyes all over the room and shouted, "Don't ever call me with that name! My name is Deathclaw!"
"What's wrong? Not wanting your identity to be revealed, just in case someone is watching us? Not wanting anybody to know about our past connection?" Silverwolf smirked.
Deathclaw replied back, "That's not what it is! I-"
The two stopped their fight as their ears perked over the sound of footsteps, with the door opening to see...
.........................
"C-Chief!?" Silverwolf stuttered, his maw wide open.
"L-leader! What are you..." Deathclaw stated at the same time, his mouth wide open as well.
"Mayor!?" The two stated, in sync.
The leader of the superhero company, the town's mayor, and... what seems to be Deathclaw's leader. What a weird combination.
"Why are you capturing us? Is this a hidden scheme between the superheroes and the villains?" Silverwolf snarled, ready to bite off their heads over this betrayal. No wonder they knew his weaknesses, the chief got the entire data on him!
However, the tension in the room suddenly dropped when all three laughed, making Deathclaw and Silverwolf cock their heads in confusion.
Nocturne clapped, "Now, now, let's finally close this up, shall we?"
Deathclaw's leader nodded his head. "Right, right, let's end this charade for once. Let me introduce myself first, the name's Andromeda. No, I am not with the villains, but I manage the antiheroes, folks with superpowers that deal with villains with their questionable approaches. They don't exactly click with superheroes, and we can't really show ourselves in the open either. You can say it's more of a secret underground team."
Deathclaw looked at the side during Andromeda's speech, severely blushing at this point. Silverwolf wondered on the sudden reaction.
Mayor Gant stated, "Look, Silverwolf, Deathclaw, I have way too many appeals on you two, and we decided to go to the extremes since both of you are not making any progress. In fact, the arguments between you two got a lot worse that it caused the whole community to... groan in unison."
Andromeda chuckled, "We did not mean to cause too many injuries, dragon, but you sure put up a resistance, compared to the wolf here." Silverwolf blushed at that. "We will heal you after this, but we still have to chain you two up just in case."
Silverwolf asked, "What do you want?"
...............................................
Mayor Gant suddenly shouted, "CAN YOU PLEASE SORT OUT OF THE LOVE DRAMA BETWEEN YOU TWO!?"
Silverwolf's eyes bulged. That was... a sudden remark, an unexpected one too. Deathclaw, however, is making sure to stare down, hoping that the ground will swallow him whole.
Nocturne laughed, "Sorry, but you guys are driving everyone crazy here. I thought Andromeda and Gant were just joking around, but holy shit, the tension is real."
Silverwolf stuttered, "I-I don't know what you mean?"
Andromeda raised his hand. "Allow me. Longing eyes whenever Silverwolf sees Deathclaw escaping, Deathclaw only showing up whenever Silverwolf is involved. Also, you might think you are slick, dragon, but you, uh, sure are checking the wolf out every time with your drones before you make your entrance next to the villain of the day, don't you? Let's not forget that smug smile the mayor captured with his camera when we scouted out the situation."
The mayor dropped the photos in front of them, causing the two to blush profusely. "I swear, I know the situation for Velvet Bar raid was under control enough for us to see what's going, but I signed up to see what the news are going crazy about regarding your superhero achievements, not... whatever this is. Although... I do appreciate the rom-com, though." Gant winked.
.......................
Deathclaw stuttered even more. "N-no! It's all... fabricated! What are you guys scheming!?"
Silverwolf, though, had come to a realization. "I thought I was just seeing things, but... I always wondered how the villain would always get captured. There were instances I see you or your drone doing something not directed at me. The flash was definitely directed at the Lizard, since I was busy looking at you, for instance."
Deathclaw countered, "Y-you're just seeing things!"
......................
Meanwhile...
Nocturne sighed, "You are right, Andro. This sure is golden. Good thing we brought some popcorn, hmm?"
Andromeda and Gant agreed at the same time, "Like watching the finale of a series, right as it gets filmed on stage."
The three sat on the chairs in the room, just enjoying the view as if they are in the cinema.
........................
Silverwolf stated, "Is that why you did not answer my calls, Andy? Because you cannot be discovered to have any connections to me, so you can easily infiltrate the villain's lair?"
Deathclaw sighed, seems like there's no point in lying anymore. He groaned at the snickers coming from the three watching them. "...Yes, Eli. I promised, didn't I? I wanted to help you out, and rather than revealing both of us as superheroes, I thought I should be in the shadows and help out without getting discovered."
Mayor Gant suddenly shouted, "Which you were doing an awful job at, by the way! Why the fuck would you show up on EVERY single case involving Silverwolf?"
Deathclaw's face is as red as a tomato at this point. Silverwolf blushed as well, his tail starting to thump against the wall. "Look, Andy... I appreciate it, but this is not what I meant. Sure, good things happened because of it, but... You saw what happened between us. I felt betrayed because of your sudden appearance like that, and... I didn't want us having to fight every time we meet."
Nocturne snapped his fingers, instantly removing the chains keeping Silverwolf and Deathclaw in place. The two stood on the ground now, but the discussion is just too serious for them to even think about.
Silverwolf, no, Eli, decided to embrace Andy. "Look, Andy, I said that during graduation because I want you right by my side. I always worry with you standing next to the villain, you know?"
Deathclaw, no, Andy, was petrified, drowning as he stared at Eli's lupine yellow eyes. "E-Eli, I... I... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."
Eli smirked, showing his fangs. "Don't get me wrong, you look so good in this outfit, but I'd rather have my bo-... friend right next to me rather than fighting, you know?"
Andy blushed even more, did he hear it right? He smiled, "Did you say boyfriend?"
Eli's turn to be stunned, blushing. "N-no... You heard... wrong?"
The loud thumping sounds made them both look. That stupid werewolf tail. Andy smirked at this. "I see, I understand." He sighed, "Look, I'm sorry for doing this in a very complicated way. I didn't mean to hurt you, but seeing how much of a success the Lizard confrontation was, I thought I should continue with the charade. I'm so sorry for causing a mess, Eli. I... I love you."
Eli smiled, "I love you too, you stupid goofball of a dragon. I thought I got the wrong scent back during graduation, but... Glad I didn't."
Andy blushed, "Aw, Eli, you and your stupid nose..." The dragon suddenly rushed at Eli and hugged him, with the wolf hugging Andy back.
The two yelped as they heard their bosses and the mayor cheering loudly at this. "Fucking finally!" Gant exclaimed.
............................
The reporters are waiting in front of the skyscraper. They got a scoop that Silverwolf was discovered infiltrating the area after Doctor Octopus' public announcement regarding his experiment to destroy the city.
After 30 minutes, Silverwolf handed over Doctor Octopus to the authorities, while whispering something to him. "Look, bud, we'll have our talk tomorrow, all right? I'll bring the Lizard too if you want." Doctor Octopus nodded at this as the authorities led him away.
No casualties yet again. Silverwolf has made a reputation on his silver tongue, capable of convincing the villains to start over and have a second chance at doing something less insane in the future. Although, the reporters saw something that looked like... wings behind the big wolf?
The dragon wearing a futuristic outfit is very bashful at this kind of attention. Deathclaw pulled out a miracle by hiding his massive figure behind the werewolf, only showing off a small portion of his wings. This is the first time he stood next to Silverwolf in public, rather than flying away.
Silverwolf chuckled, "See, babe? Now you understand how much I hated that first headline they made of me." Deathclaw said nothing at this, still trembling.
Silverwolf held the dragon's hand, and announced to the media, "Deathclaw had assisted me on resolving the whole situation today! Without him, I would not be able to prevent any casualties!" The reporters cheered at that.
Silverwolf winked, "See? I told you I would handle it, love."
Deathclaw smiled back at the werewolf, "Thank you, my wolf. Being on the same side is... nice. I love you so much."
The dragon suddenly lunged at Silverwolf, kissing him. The reporters made some "Ooh"s and "Aww"s, swooning or whistling at them. As the two hugged each other, one of the reporters screamed, "FUCKING FINALLY!"
...................
Andy rushed at Eli after grabbing the newspaper. The two started living together in Eli's flat, and were just enjoying the peaceful chilly Winter morning beforehand.
Andy exclaimed, "Love, I think I made a bigger deal than needed. What should we do!?" He dropped the newspaper in front of Eli and put his face in his paws. The two enjoyed being in their were forms even at home.
Eli checked on the newspaper headlines, "What is it?" His eyes bulged.
"Finally! Deathclaw and Silverwolf Confessed Their Feelings!"
"Love Sure Blooms in the Battlefield."
""I Stopped Doing Crimes and Found Love, After Seeing Deathclaw and Silverwolf All Lovey-Dovey!" Villain Says."
"The Epic Embrace of the Century, Both Superheroes and Villains Cheered."
Eli's face fumed, his tail going crazy. He saw Andy's face bright red as well. "Well, that sure is a great entrance on your start as a superhero," he laughed.
Andy groaned, "W-well, at least they got a great picture out of it..."
Eli hugged Andy after calming down with his laughter. "I'm happy you're here now, my dragon."
Andy sighed, "Glad to be back, my wolf."
