The Great Prophet Of Zao Chapter 14: Fire, Smoke, and Death
#14 of The Great Prophet Of Zao
Writer's note: I would like to say sorry for the lack of content in the past month. My studies and projects sadly overwhelmed me and I had no time to work on my story. This is why this chapter is very short. Thankfully over the summer I should be able to return back to regularly posting new chapters every two weeks. I must thank you again for your patience and I hope you find this chapter interesting.
The forest bursts into life as all the animals around me come out of their hiding spots and begin screaming at the top of their lungs, charging towards the lights in the distance. I jump out of the bushes carrying my sword and buckler shield. I start running towards the bright lights in the distance that casts massive shadows behind me into the deep dark forest. The guard dogs in front of me create a wall of leather and armor that weaves its way through the forest while the untrained hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, and cats behind me stumble amongst themselves from the overgrowth of uprooted roots and thick patches of plants. Eros dashes out of his hiding spot and runs through the forest past the guard dogs. The last thing I see of him is his rabbit ears bobbing over the clink and clamor of armored dogs.
Soon the flickers of lights in the distance grow into beacons of light that could even rival the sun itself. The lights bounce off the guard dogs' metal armor, blinding my eyes and making it almost impossible for me to see in front of myself. I lower my head, focusing more on the overgrowth of the forest, when I see over to my left a large group of rabbits surrounded by a handful of guard dogs. There are about twenty rabbits kneeling behind two large boulders that are covered with vines. The rabbits are all wearing long brown cloaks with the green sash tied around their waists, their cloaks cover their faces hiding their eyes from the upcoming battle. Their green sashes are covered in all types of pouches that are filled to the brim with any type of medicine they could find. This sight of determined healers should have given me some form of ease to my worries, but it only brings back the horrifying memories of war.
"Forward!" I look in front of me and see general Jeval standing on top of a large rock. He raises his war hammer and shots at the top of his lungs, "forward through the forest, forward through the bushes, forward through the camp, and forward through their corpses!" A thunderous roar erupts amongst the guard dogs as the last few of them pushed through the faker bushes.
I look at these faker bushes and see nothing more than strong rigid thorn bushes, ready to rip apart my leather garb and even my flesh. The faker bushes seem to glow as light shines above them. I speed up as fast as I can and force my way through the bushes. To my own surprise the thorns on its vines were nothing more than leaves shaped into sharpen points that easily bend from the force of my body. I burst through the other side of the faker bushes and my eyes are immediately smarted from the overwhelming lights. A burst of heat assaults my senses; feeling as if boiling liquid was poured over me. I raise my shield in front of me as my eyes adjust to the environment.
The enemy camp is spread throughout the Valley forming into organized squares of tents and equipment. The tents are made out of thin bright yellow fabric with black markings on their sides, though most of the tents near me are scorched black from the fires spreading throughout the camp. The whole camp is consumed in fire, smoke and chaos. Before me lay the bloodied corpses of our enemies, disarmed of their weaponary. The guard dogs have already pushed halfway through the camp slaughtering whoever crosses their path.
The animals behind me start pouring out of the faker bushes and frantically charging their way through the camp. I look around for a moment and see a massive black tent standing to the left of me. I also notice that these massive black tenants are spread all around the Valley sprouting above the other tents indicating some form of importance.
Seeing as the black tent to my left is the closest thing to me that is not on fire yet, I make my way towards it. As I stumble through the camp, all is chaos of fire and the screaming of pain as the dogs are grinding their way through the camp leaving almost nothing alive. Suddenly an enemy soldier bursts out of a tent just a couple feet in front of me screaming as his entire body is consumed in fire. He throws himself to the ground rolling in agonizing pain. I'm horrified by the view in front of me when I feel a heavy push against my back. I take three steps forward and turn around to see a ferret falling to the ground with an enemy soldier stabbing the ferrets back with his oddly shaped spear. I take my Buckler Shield and slam it into the face of the enemy soldier making him fall to the ground. Then I take two quick steps to close the distance between us as he groans from the pain in his head. I thrust my hamster sword into the creature's skull silencing him.
Another three enemy soldiers burst out of nowhere attacking a group of cats just a couple feet in front of me. They easily slaughter the first few ill-equipped and untrained cats. I charge towards the first enemy soldier who has his back turned to me. I thrust my sword into his back sending him into a whaling scream of agnony. The second enemy soldier notices me and pulls out his dagger. He thrust his dagger towards my head which I easily block by slamming my Buckler Shield against his hand. With a quick thrust of my blade I sent it straight into his neck making him fall over gargling for air. The last enemy soldier is overwhelmed by three cats frothing with vengeance for their fallen friends.
"Thanks Marco," one of the cats says as she tries to help one of the wounded off the ground.
"Help the wounded back to the forest... so the healers can take care of them," I say while slowly regaining my breath from the exhausting battle and the overwhelming heat from the flames.
"But, what about the enemy camp?"
"You guys did your part in this battle," I say while turning around and once more making my way towards the black tent.
The smell of ash fills the air. The fire around me seems to slowing down and the heat is starting to cool off leaving behind a cold wind. I slow down for a moment to enjoy the cool air. Suddenly I feel a sharp pain in the back of my head and I tumble forward onto the ground. I look behind me and see an enemy soldier standing right on top of me with his dagger in one hand and a rock in the other. I touch the back of my head and feel a sharp pain. I pull my hand forward and see there are traces of blood on my fingers. I look up to the enemy soldier and see the pure rage in his eyes. For some reason I can't seem to focus my eyes and my body feels sluggish. My heart sinks as I realize this is the end. The furious creature raises his dagger and plunges it awards me. Then suddenly out of nowhere the wind howls like a screaming child. The fires around me start to grow into massive flames. The enemy soldier is almost flung off his feet from the gale-like winds, but quickly regained balance. Then suddenly out of nowhere a yellow tent flies out of a wall of fire and wraps around the enemy soldier as if entangling him in a trap. He falls to the ground unable to escape from the entanglement. And then as quickly as the wild wind had come it quieted into the night. I slowly get onto my knees still feeling off kilter from my fall to the ground.
I look down at the soldier that just a moment ago was about to take away my life. This creature that took away my home that was the only place in this world that I truly felt safe. This creature that took away my father and made me leave him behind in a burning city. A sense of rage overwhelms me and I tightly grasp my sword as I thrust it into him. He continues to try to untangle himself but to no avail. He can only scream in pain as I continue thrusting my sword into his body. I continue stabbing the creature even after the entire tent is covered in blood and his screams have long been silenced. Slowly I regain my senses from the overwhelming smell of blood from the corpse taking over the smell of burnt ash. I look down and see that my leather vest is covered in blood. My heart is still racing and it won't calm down. I slowly get back onto my feet and see that the giant black tent is only a short distance away from me. Without taking even a second thought I charge towards it.
As I reach the giant black tent I realize why it has not yet gone up in flames. Six enemy soldiers are defending the front of the black tent stopping a group of twelve guard dogs, some of whom are carrying torches. For some reason the enemy soldiers are frantically waving their hands in front of them screaming in a foreign language and their faces show horror. The guard dogs stand just 10 feet in front of me watching the enemy's every move and waiting for an opening to strike. I recognize one of the dogs in the middle to be a beagle named Cola. Cola is prone and ready to strike when his ears rise and he looks behind to see me charging towards him. His stern expression is replaced with a kind smile that has grown on me this past week. Then I see one of the guard docs tossing his torch right on top of the black tent. The enemy creatures scream in horror as they try to put out the flame. Cola notices this and orders everyone to charge forward. Then suddenly there's a large flash of light and a thunderous explosion.
An unbearable force of air hits me almost making me fall off my feet. Then suddenly a large piece of wood shoots through my body leaving behind shredded flesh and splinters. The sheer force sends me to the ground as a few small fragments of wood slice through whatever flesh they can find. I collapse to the ground unable to move my arms and legs from the sheer pain. I look down my chest and see a massive gaping hole that is spewing blood all over my leather garb and onto the grass underneath me. I try to take a breath but I'm only able to spew blood from my mouth. This is it, I think to myself as I lay my head back onto the wet grass now soaking with my blood. This is where I die. The fires around me start to fade and everything is starting to sound so far away.
But I don't want to die; I have to protect mom and Sam. I swore to dad that I would protect them. I turn my head to the side and look at the fading wall of flames. Why do I feel so cold...It's so cold! If only I could move my arm I could reach the flames.
In the distance I hear footsteps. I try to turn my head but I can't move it. Then I see a figure run up beside me. I can't see anything except someone standing in front of me, staring down at me. The figure is saying something but I can't hear anything. I can't feel the cold wind. I can't feel anything.
