"MUuh-m-my mask b-bwoke when I-" he stopped to sniff, "w-WUH-w-when I few-W-w." He stopped bawling momentarily, but his breathing became erratic, and he shuddered every now and again. He raised the broken mask up to her face so that she could see. She carefully took it into her hands and inspected it.
"Oh, w-well this isn't too bad. I-I think I can just glue it back together. See?" She pressed the two pieces together, showing the cub the completed mask. He wiped his eyes and sniffed again, staring at the mask with tear-ridden eyes.
"...Okay..." he muttered quietly, nodding softly. Slowly, he crawled up to his feet before wiping his nose.
"Y-yeah," said Alphys, trying to take on an encouraging tone, "D-don't you worry, kid. I-I'll fix this up so good that...it-it'll be as good as new..." The cub stared at the mask blankly, his tail drooping behind him. Alphys groaned inwardly.
Gosh, what a mess, she thought to herself, I just wanted to spend some quiet time here today, and this happens... What is this kid doing in the dumps anyways? Is he Catty's little brother or something? I don't remember her saying anything about that... But who else would want to come all the way out here? Her thoughts were cut short as she felt the boy tug at the sleeve of her lab coat. The reptilian shook her head and looked to the cub.
"S-sorry, I was uh...j-just thinking about something...eheheh... A-anyways, follow me. I'll take you to my lab so that we can put your uh...mask back together." The cub nodded and waited for her to take the lead. Once she got moving, he followed close behind with his eyes practically glued to the mask. All the while, Alphys glanced nervously around her. Who knew who else could be down here with them? If the kid was here, then it was possible that someone else was too. Maybe a friend of his? Maybe his parents? Maybe even Asgore himself?!
...Okay, maybe not Asgore... But all of the other possibilities were still plausible. With that in mind, Alphys turned and faced the kid, halting their progress.
"H-hey uhh...kid," she began, "n-notto sound, uh...creepy or anything, eheh, b-but um...w-where are your parents?" The cub turned around and stared for a moment, seeming to try and find the direction to his home through the countless piles of trash. Eventually, he brought out his paw and thrusted his arm out, pointing in the direction where Alphys could only assume was where his home was. But this anser concerned her. It just couldn't be right. There was just no way it could be true. Of all the directions she had expected to see, this was by no means one of them. Why _would_she?
He was pointing up.
