Chapter 6: Uncalled for practice
Will woke up, feeling refreshed. For once, he didn't dream anything weird. After a quick change of clothes, Will went down. On the kitchen table, a covered dish and a note was to be seen. Will took a quick peak- toasts- and looked at the note.
To Will.
Here's breakfast, and a bill for lunch. You can order something or make something you want. Like I said, just don't leave the house. You can do whatever you want, but I suggest that you practice your magic. After all, the quicker you master it, the quicker you can go about. I'll see you at dinner.
_ -Arthur_
Will finished the toasts, and looked at the clock, which pointed 9:30.
"Today's going to be looong day..." Will sighed. After a round of chores, reading, and exercise, Will still found that the time hung heavy. Eventually, he drifted down into the basement, with a grimoire in hand.
Meanwhile, two figures in a bush were watching a house. The two figures in question was a long-haired girl and a one-eyed boy.
"Wait. Since when did you learn how to track people by their phones?" Mark asked. When Hailey barged into his house yesterday, he didn't believe her claims that she could track his location. But when Will showed up on the yard a couple hours ago, Mark had to believe her.
"Since forever. I mean, I thought everyone could do that. Anyhow, let's go and see him." Hailey stood up, but Mark pulled her down.
"Wait, shouldn't we think things through? I mean, the last time we tried to talk, he bailed out fast."
"The last time he got away because his brother had a getaway car. Now, he's at his home. I doubt you can move away in a matter of hours." Hailey spoke as she started to walk across the street. Mark sighed, and followed her. Something told him that he was about to get into a big trouble, even worse than skipping school and using his pocket money for paying both of their bus fares.
Will was focusing on a simple element spell-chain lightning- when he heard a ring. Will frowned, and went up the stairs. He was sure that no one had a reason to visit his brother, especially when he was out at work.
Maybe the mailman or something? Will thought as he opened the door. He had enough time to register two figures-a boy and a girl who were suspiciously familiar- before he was pulled out, stepping over the boundaries. Suddenly, Will found himself in a Sphere, and with him, Mark and Hailey.
Will couldn't believe his eyes. Not only was he in the Sphere- which was almost obviously demon-made- Mark and Hailey was with him. He tried to go through the door again, but discovered that the door was not an exit.
"What do you think you're doing!" Will yelled as he turned to face the two.
"Well, you didn't call us back, and ignored our phone calls! And you lied! I think what we did is understandable in light of the situation!" Hailey shouted. However, she sensed that Will was unusually agitated. From years of being friends with him, she was almost an expert with reading Will's emotions. And now, what she felt from him was fear. She looked at his eyes, and saw that he was on the verge of panic.
"Well...." Will hesitated. Suddenly, he saw a demon, grinning across the street. As the demon sent a bolt of dark energy toward them, he instinctively responded, shoving Hailey aside. Reaching into his powers, he shouted "Shield!". The bolt of energy slammed into it, and Will staggered, trying to hold up the barrier with all his power.
Mark watched in disbelief as Will threw up what appeared to be a barrier at a blast. He looked back, and saw a man across the street. Then the man changed shape, turning into a winged half man-beast thing. Mark looked up at Will, and saw that he changed too. In his place, there stood a white tiger. The white tiger- or Will- growled at Mark. "Take Hailey, and run!" he shouted, running toward the demons. Mark automatically obeyed, dragging Hailey in(she fainted when she saw the demon). As he locked the door, he heard Will shouting "Chain lightning!"
Will casted the spell at the demon, while drawing his swords. The spell was blocked by the shield that the demon casted. However, the slashes that Will made shattered it easily, forcing the demon to draw his own sword and slash back.
"Not bad, not bad at all." The demon purred. The demon took on the shape of a hyena, if a winged hyena existed. "But not good enough!" the demon cackled, and slashed at Will, who rolled away in time. Will leapt backwards and slashed, creating a blue crescent of energy. The demon also slashed, and the two energy sources collided.
"Blademaster technique- twister downslash!" Will shouted as he jumped to the wall and ran along it. He couldn't tell where he got the name, but he shouted it anyhow. He leapt and slashed down with a single blade. The demon grunted in surprise as he caught the blow, and his eyes widened when Will slashed down with the second blade with all his might, while pushing away the entangled blades. The resulting slash resulted in a huge explosion. Will stood up, holding his blades. His sharpened senses told him that it wasn't over yet, and when the smoke cleared, there was another demon, who supported the first one.
"What happened to 'give me just a sec?' Pathetic." The second demon sneered as he pushed the first one away.
"Hey, it wasn't my fault! He is stronger than I expected!" the first demon protested.
Will leapt, slashing before they could make an movement. "Who are you?" Will enquired as he slashed repeatedly at the second demon, who dodged with ease.
"A demon. Duh!" the demon laughed. "Not bad, but too hasty. Try this on!" the demon shouted as he slashed with his claws. Will tried to roll away, but the first demon also slashed at Will from where he was sitting. Gritting his teeth, Will generated a barrier, which barely blocked the strike.
"Blademaster technique- Chaos twister!" Will shouted as he joined his blades together. Twisting it rapidly, he made multiple slashes at the first demon, simultaneously keeping up a shield at his back to protect himself from the second demon. When the shield shattered, Will rolled away, facing them simultaneously. Reaching into his pockets, he pulled out the charms that his brother gave them. He grabbed several of them, and threw them, shouting "Bind!' As he did so, the charms suddenly transformed into chains, trying to bind the two demons. while one was bound, the second one swiped his sword, burning the chains that quickly transformed into a charm.
Damn. He's strong! Will thought as he leapt back. However, the demon lounged forward, and slashed at Will. While he blocked the attack, the force still smashed Will to the ground. As the demon swiped again, Will raised his swords again, forming a cross to defend himself. He gritted his teeth, swords being slowly lowered from the demon's overwhelming strength. Will gasped out: "Fire arrow!" and three shafts of fire materialized. However, the demon simply muttered several words, and the shafts were pierced by jets of darkness.
"Is that the best you could do?" the demon taunted. The blades were now millimeters away from Will's chest. Out of options, Will focused his energies again, shouting "Blademaster technique- Pinpoint burst!". The resulting explosion threw him onto the ground, knocking him out.
Mark stared out of the window, frantic. After dragging Hailey in, he tried to make phone calls to the police, but found that he didn't have a signal. He looked out the window, and gasped. Will was laying unconscious in a small crater at the road, with a monster bound in glowing chains and another one lying some distance away.
Is it over? Mark wondered. As soon as he thought so, the monster stood up, coughing. However, the monster wheeled drunkenly, and stood up.
"Not bad! Not bad at all! A master's technique, this early!" the demon laughed, almost crazy as he staggered over to Will, who slowly woke up.
Will struggled, but fell down. He searched his pockets, and managed to fish out some extra charms. He threw all of the into the air, and started chanting.
"Elements, roar! Resonate, and unleash judgment! Final arts, Element burst!"
Each charms started to glow and vibrate, gaining strength. A pentacle connected the charms, and a intense stream of energy shot out toward the demon, resulting in a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared, there was only a half-melted sword on the ground.
Will stood up, exhausted. With trembling limbs, he walked over to the original demon, holding the sword.
"W...Wait! Let's talk it over! I didn't mean to kill you! The other guy forced me into it! And...."
Slash!
Will slashed down, cutting off the demon's words. Exhausted both mentally and physically, he slumped down on the ground. Suddenly, he heard a door creaking open, and threw a charm, which caught on fire. When he recognized the target, he quickly muttered several words, which extinguished the charm.
"Hey.... Could you...... not do that?" Will spoke to Mark. Suddenly, the Sphere shuddered, and crumbled away. And Will discovered that he was back in the mortal world again.
"I think what we need is an explanation." Mark spoke as he faced Will.
An brief explanation later
"So wait. You and your brother are a part of a species that humanity doesn't know about, and you fight demons to save the world?" Mark spoke incredulously. It wasn't that he disbelieved Will, but he just had a hard time believing that demons existed.
"And your parents freaked out, so they threw you and your brother out?" Hailey- now fully recovered- spoke up. "But aren't they also werebeasts, like you?"
"No, they aren't, which is why they freaked out. Besides, we're both adopted. My brother took me in, because I didn't have anywhere else to go."
"So we get it, but why did all this just happen now?" Hailey spoke.
"Because you just pulled me out the house. My brother had barriers around the place so that we'd be safe in here, but the barriers only extend as far as the yard." Will spoke. He felt slightly relieved now that the secret is out.
"So that's why you left in such a hurry, without telling us anything." Hailey mused as she leaned back, massaging her temples.
"Well, my brother insisted, and you wouldn't have believed me if I told you the whole story. Besides, I didn't want to get you in any trouble...." Will trailed off, surprised when Hailey hugged him.
"We understand..... But what do we do now?" Hailey asked. She saw Will sigh, looking also troubled.
"I don't know. I mean, I'm still new to this stuff, and I only had a couple day's training. Could you wait until my brother gets home? Maybe he could figure things out somehow."
And the trio sat, occasionally talking about unimportant things, until Arthur came home.
"Will, I got some Chinese food, and my boss said that he wanted........" Arthur trailed off as he saw Hailey and Mark, both awkwardly fixed between standing up and sitting down.
"Will, wh.... what are they doing here? And why are you showing your form to them?" Arthur stammered.
"I think we need to talk.... Again." Will spoke as he pointed to the chair.
Another batch of explanation later
"So let me get this straight. You two followed him here for an explanation, and then dragged Will beyond the boundary, which caused demons to attack him, and then he told you the whole thing?" Arthur sat back, unsure if he should be relieved that his brother was safe, proud that he won against two demons, or be mad at the two friends for starting everything.
"More or less. I mean, Will did get into some trouble, but...." Mark spoke, but trailed off as he saw Arthur's reaction. His eyes gave a dark crimson glow, and the next line he spoke made him shiver.
"What...... Sort of trouble.....?" Arthur growled. Mark nearly went back on his word, but Hailey blabbed, not heeding the frantic gestures that Will made behind Arthur's back.
"Well, from what I heard, he nearly died. Also, I heard that he got beaten rather badly... Mmph!" Will swiftly covered her mouth, looking nervously at his brother. He nearly leapt out of the seat, but sat back down.
"If you weren't his friends, I would've killed you." Arthur muttered as he sat down.
"What do we do now? Are you going to erase our memories, or are you going to do something else?" Mark asked, feeling apprehensive.
Arthur thought, drumming his claws on the tabletop.
"Here's the deal. I won't erase your memories, as long as you agree to keep things quiet. If you do tell, I assure you that you'll regret it....." Arthur spoke darkly, sliding his claws out for good measure. Mark and Hailey gulped, and spoke up quickly. "Sure!"
"So, do you want to stay, or are you going to go home? Because it's like 7 now." Arthur spoke. Hailey took a look at the clock, and flipped.
"Ahh! My parents are going to kill me! Come on Mark, we gotta go! Bye Will, we'll call you later, and bye, Mr. Arthur!" Hailey shouted as she dashed for the door, dragging Mark along. The door slammed shut before either one of the brothers could react.
"So are you okay? They said that you were injured. Is it bad?" Arthur spoke, looking at Will with concern.
"Well, remember the skill I used in the practice? I sort of used it when I was pressed against the ground. The backlash slammed me hard. Other than that, I'm pretty okay. I'm drained, though. Magic is really exhausting....."
"Well, if you keep on using it, it will be easier. It's like exercise. If you never used a muscle in your life, then when you use it for the first time, it will hurt a lot, but it will hurt less after you keep on working out. You should be okay after a meal and a good sleep." Arthur spoke, relieved.
"Well, that's a relief." Will sighed before slumping back on the sofa.
"By the way, my boss said that he wanted to see you." Arthur spoke as he ate.
"The one who's a werebeast? But why? Also, I thought that I shouldn't leave the house because demons could catch me." Will replied, surprised.
"Well, you're with me. And I'm not boasting when I say that I could handle most demons with no problem." Arthur spoke.
"If that's the case, I guess I'll come. What do you do for living, anyway?" Will spoke.
"Just average office jobs. Nothing special. Anyhow, it'd be a good idea for you to meet him. He's a lot better at sword techniques than I am, and he might be able to tell what your style is."
"When I used them today, I called them Blademaster Techniques? I don't know why I called them that though. It just slipped out."
Blademaster Techniques? Arthur mused. He wasn't quite as skilled in swordplay as his brother did, but he was certain that such a style didn't exist, or as far as he knew.
He probably made it up during combat...... Arthur mused while cleaning up. Will was upstairs, sleeping. The battle probably exhausted him, and it was late into night. Feeling sleepy, he finished his chores (there wasn't much to do in the first place, as Will finished everything before he got his hands on it), and went to sleep as well. However, sleep eluded Arthur for a long while, and when it did come, it was a fitful one.
