Two of a Kind 6
#6 of ~Two of a Kind~
I let out a low groan as I woke up, I slid my eyes open and looked at my arm, the swelling was completely gone now, and it didn't hurt that bad, it felt like a bad bruise, but not like it had the day before.
I looked around, and I couldn't believe it, I was yet again in a different location. The walls were painted white, and the bed felt slightly uncomfortable, but wasn't nearly as bad as the one at the cabin. Wait, why wasn't I in the cabin anymore? Where was the big guy? I rose up, and got out of bed.
I seriously need to stop passing out, I had told Blake I could easily kick his dad's ass, yet I've done nothing but pass out and sleep.
"a burden." I said solemnly to myself. That's what I was, a burden. I stood motionless for a few minutes.
"hey CALEB" I heard a loud yell before the door busted open and I was tackled to the floor. "lunch is ready." Blake was sitting beside me panting a bit.
"what's the matter?" I asked before the answer came crashing though the door.
"you sorry ass!" said the little girl who had been sitting beside the bed when my arm had broke.
"I said sor-" Blake was cut off, I hadn't even been able to follow her movement, but she was now on top of Blake trying to strangle him, which seemed to have no effect as Blake began a furious laughter. "so-sorry"
"yea you will be!!" she continued with her hands around his neck, now she was shaking him. "making fun of my cooking like that!"
Note to self; don't make fun of her cooking.
"what's going on?" I asked still a bit surprised about the whole incident.
"oh, right" she stopped and completely changed her mood. "Blake, lets go! Caleb you to, its time for lunch." she got up and walked out of the room dusting off her light yellow dress. The kid looked about 7 or 8.
"right, c'mon Caleb" Blake grabbed my hand and pulled me up with himself. I didn't give an answer, just nodded and followed. What a weird family.
We quickly arrived in what I guessed was the living room, there wasn't much in this room, a square wooden coffee table sat in the middle of the room, surrounded by two couches, there was a dark haired girl sitting on one of them, she looked about 17 maybe 18, she didn't care to much for the whole ‘dress' theme like the other girl had, she wore loose jeans with a loose shirt.
"Caleb this is the family" Blake said as he and the small girl walked a bit forward so I could look at them better, and the other girl had stepped beside them. "I'm Blake as you know."
"I'm Jennifer, but you can just call me Jenn" she gave a curtsy.
"I'm Anita" she gave a smile.
"uh, my names Caleb." I paused for a second before giving a slight wave. "its nice to meet everyone."
"ok, now that introductions are done. Lets go eat, I'm starved!" Blake said rushing to another room that looked to be the kitchen, and ran back out with a two plates of food and handed one to me. "here, eat up, you haven't eaten anything since the cheeseburgers, after this ill take you home."
"ok, and actually that guy in the cabin fed me something." everything after that was silenced.
"oh god! Call a doctor!" I panicked out as Jenn initiated the same panic.
"a doctor? He probably has worms now!? He needs a vet!"
"what, what's wrong with me now?" asked a bit annoyed and a bit worried.
"nothing, their just completely insane." Anita whispered to me. "what did he feed you anyways?"
I gave the question a quick thought. "I don't really know what it was, it was a big hunk of meat that we cooked in foil in a fire. It was actually really neat!"
"Blake, Jenn. Lets go, Blake you have a bit of money right?"
"yea, why?" Blake answered digging around in his pockets pulling out a crumpled ball of bills. "I don't know how much, like 12 dollars I'd guess."
"that's ok, Jenn you don't mind keeping an eye on Caleb do you hun?" she was motioning for Blake to follow her to the door.
"no, I'm sure we'll have fun."
We had been walking for about 40minutes before we finally made it out of the thick woods and into the towns streets. It was different then the other day with Caleb, rush hour had already taken its effect on the street.
"so where to miss Anita?" I spoke out to break the silence between us.
"the pet store, I need to get something there." she said quietly turning down a road as I quickly followed.
"hmm."
"what?" she stopped to look at me.
"oh nothing, just seems all you need is money, but you still took me with you. Now why is that?" I smirked as she continued walking.
"I brought you along cause I don't see why I should waste my time carrying stuff, when I have someone as dumb as you who would do it for me."
"that hurts." I whimpered to myself. "so what is it you need exactly?"
"we all know how much of an barbarian Anthony can be, I don't think it was wise to let him eat wild meat with Anthony as a cook." she said as we waited for traffic to hold, so we could cross.
"you really don't like Anthony do you?" I held pause as we walked across the street.
"I don't trust anything he does is all." she had a serious tone to her voice. "his eyes, the way he acts towards stuff, towards people, he doesn't care for anything, and I'm sure he has no loyalties." she never spoke out of anger, but I could tell she spoke what she had seen to be truth.
"yea, I guess." was all I could think to say at the time before a scream a few yards away was heard, instantly jerking mine and Anita's attention to where the scream had originated. It was a woman, I couldn't tell how old but she was panicking out into the street where a small child was wondering back to the woman without care of oncoming traffic. "Anita!" was all that needed to be said before she let out a sigh and we both dashed to the scene.
"I call mother." she said in a rush.
I gave a simple nod, before I stopped. Anita had already grabbed the woman before entering into traffic, all that was left was the little girl.
"please, let me go! that's my daughter out there!" was all she could say before she let out a gasp for air covering her mouth to mute the scream. We each seen it, an eighteen-wheeler was headed for the little girl, and it wasn't going to stop anytime soon.
I knew I wouldn't make it there if I just ran. I had to think of something to get speed. 1second had already passed before I leaped forward where a car had stopped placing my hands and feet on the edge facing the girl I launched myself forward with all I had. 2seconds had passed, the truck was still a yard from the girl, and I was even further, I had to get more speed, letting my right foot fall in front of me, I caught the ground and pushed off again, and repeated until I was running. 4seconds had passed and the truck was within a foot of her. I could still hear the mother's shrill piercing my ears, I was doubting the truck had even seen the little girl, it hadn't shown signs of stopping or slowing down. 5 seconds.
"are you ok little girl?" I asked with a smile, which had gotten me a nod in return. "that's good, you shouldn't wonder away from your mother like that, the streets are very dangerous, ok?"
"o..ok, where's mommy?" she said as her eyes began to water, letting a few tears fall.
"its ok, come with me." I said grasping her hand. There where a few cars that had stopped in the panic, one of which, had a nice sized dent where I had launched myself from it. It didn't take long for a line of cars to stop making it easier for us to cross. Every eye was on me and the child.
"m..my baby!" the mother spoke out ripping herself from Anita's hold. "Milly, Milly! Are you ok?! Thank you so much, thank you, thank you, thank you." she repeated as she held her daughter crying on her shoulder, the little one doing the same.
"can I kindly ask that everyone here keep what they've just seen secretive?" I asked with a false smile. I knew this wouldn't end well, and so did Anita.
"lets go." she was making sure to whisper soft enough so that only I could hear her.
"mm, lets." I said as we dashed out across the street and found ourselves between a few buildings where we stopped to breathe. "there" I said pointing to a small manhole beside us. Any time anything got out of control or we felt at risk of exposure we snuck down into the sewers, it was always our way of traveling town without being noticed.
"that was pretty impressive speed back there." Anita said as we climbed down the ladder.
"huh, I guess?" It wasn't to bad, but it would have went easier if I had the full power of my werewolf form. "thank you."
"it was just a compliment, no need for thanks." her voice echoed of the cement walls that surrounded us.
"no, thank you for helping me save them." I whispered as to stop most of the echoing.
"its no problem, I'm glad their still alive." she said following beside me. "so you know where the pet store is right?"
"yeap, I know these sewers like the back of my hand." I replied showing the back of my hand to her before giving a thumbs up.
"so you guys are werewolves huh?" I asked Jenn as she swung from a swing attached to a sturdy tree in the backyard.
"mmhmm, me Blake and Anita are pure blood." she replied with a cheerful glee to her.
"pure blood?" I asked puzzled by the new term.
"yea, we attain our wolf form through being born of two werewolves, yours will come from being bitten by a werewolf."
"oh, that's cool." I said not really knowing what to say at the time.
"not really, our parents have no use for us so we got kicked out at a young age." she said stopping the swing, standing still. "you still have a mom and dad, mine care nothing for me."
"I'm sorry, but everything happens for the best, even if it seems really bad at the time, good will always come from it." I tried to comfort her. "so why are you guys all together?"
"Markus, Blake's father, used to be a real nice man until about a months ago, everything changed, but he was the one who took us in after our families disowned us."
"oh, I see, why did he become so mean all of the sudden like that?" I questioned as she came and sat beside me on the ground.
"we don't know, at first I was scared, but he never comes around anymore, so its not really that bad, plus I have Anita and Blake to take care of me." she said putting forth a fake smile towards me.
"your very lucky to have friends like them." I paused for a brief moment trying to think of what to say. "how long have you guys been here?"
"Anita's been here about 2 months and I came a few days after." she said standing up. "c'mon I wanna show you something."
"ok?" I questioned before getting up and being dragged inside the house to what I had guessed was her room. "where is this?"
"my room, but look." she pointed to the small white dresser in the corner of her room. "watch this, but you have to promise not to tell anyone ok?"
"ok, I wont I promise." I crossed my heart, she was just a little kid, it actually amazed me in a way, I had seen her so rough with Blake earlier, and now, she's just a child. "now what was it you wished to show me?"
"just watch, patience is a virtue you know?" she said as if teaching me something. "this is my secret escape hideout." she grasped the sides of the dresser and gently picked it up and set it aside, revealing a small rope on the floor. I walked over slowly looking over the room as I did, it had a pink cream color to it, the bed and dresser matched colors, the walls had small drawings on them, probably with crayon or markers, I didn't have enough time to make them out before I had reached Jenn. As she pulled the rope upwards, a small bored came with it, showing a small tunnel leading into darkness.
"where does this lead?" I asked as she crawled into the small space. "Jenn?" I called, but only to get no reply. After a few seconds of thinking I decided it couldn't possibly get any more strange then it already was, so I went to the dark hole and managed to squeeze myself through it into a pitch black area.
"here." said Jenn as she grabbed hold of my hand dragging me through the dark room, I wasn't even able to see my own hand in front of my face, but she flawlessly made her way across the large room without hitting anything. Or was this just an empty room?
"where are we?" I asked in a bit of confusion. We had walked for about 3minutes before she finally stopped and answered me.
"this is my secret hiding place." she replied as a flare of light rapidly pushed over us revealing everything that was mystery before. She had opened what looked like another hidden door like the one in her room, but the apparent smell, and the small chirps of wild birds said that this one lead outdoors.
I turned around after my eyes had adjusted to see what we had went through. It was a long tunnel that was held up with large boards, it looked like something you'd see in an old mine. It was still dark at the end so I couldn't make out how long it was but it had to be at least 300feet, but the more I looked the more I noticed that the tunnel was at an incline, we had been walking slightly upwards this whole time. I wonder how deep we were?
"up here" Jenn called from above me. "this is it, my secret hiding place."
"huh? Ok" I gave a slight laugh as I made my way up the hole, in doing so I found myself laughing even harder causing me to collapse once I made my way out.
"what's so funny?" she asked as if she found my laughing hurtful.
"it..its not you." I said trying to catch my breath. "I was just thinking of something is all."
"thinking of what?" she was a little puzzled still.
"all of this stuff that's happening," I paused for a brief moment to sit up. "it makes me feel like Alice, meeting strange people, crawling through rabbit holes." She didn't answer back just looked at me waiting for a better explanation. "you know? Alice in wonderland?"
"no? who is she?"
"she's a girl in a story, she falls into a rabbit hole and wakes up in a magical land filled with all kinds of weird, strange people." I said trying to bring up some memory for her. "well it's not important."
"yeah." she replied getting a gloomed look about her.
"this is an amazing place, its very beautiful." I said trying to cheer her up, looking around at the terrain, it was covered in beautiful green grass and young oak trees, small birds and other small animals rummaged around throughout the area. It was really amazing how peaceful it seemed here. "it really is amazing."
