Dreamweaver chapter 1; Rain
A lone figure tread the streets this fateful night. The rain and wind beat down on him relentlessly, soaking his tattered rags. A sudden gale caused him to slip and land on his stomach. Screaming out in pain, the saurian shivered. His body was adorned in cuts and bruises. Tears streamed down his snout singeing open cuts on his face. The raptor's innocent gaze meandered to the heavens and a violent bolt of lightning crackled through the sky. He squinted at the sudden flash, flushing water from his eyes. His glistening black and green hide reflected the light. The saurian's golden eyes wandered back to the road. It was empty, and all the houses were locked and bolted. The raptor forced himself into a sitting position. He was cold and tired.
If the weather isn't going to be the death of me, hunger will be, he reasoned. The raptor massaged his sore stomach with a gnarled hand.
The poor lad... A villager thought, as he peered from behind thick curtains. No young'un deserves to be in such a state. The otter bit his lower lip as he saw the raptor gagging. He's coughing up blood... He'll die if he's out there much longer, but If I bring him in I'll be violating City Laws...
The saurian couldn't help himself from coughing. He felt sharp pangs of pain swelling in his lungs. "Not again" He choked. The pain grew with the coming seconds, something building in his gut. The raptor went through a series of spasms until he vomited up what meager morsels of food he'd scavenged.
The otter watching from the window gasped; I have to do something... I cant just let a child go and die. It'd be against me better conscience.
Marching to the kitchen he found his wife preparing Stew for a late night dinner. They had been expecting a visit from their son for a while now, and tonight was the night.
"Layola, there's a poor sod outside, he be sittin' in the middle of th'road battered and bruised. I can't be watchin 'im sufferin nomore. It ain't sittin with me well... I got to be doing something. Im gonna bring him in. Get the room in the attic ready, with plenty of sheets... We'll need some bandages and poultices, he's in bad shape"
"But Doland, that's the room Ryume'll be staying in..."
"I don't care Lay, please its best for us to be helpin' a kid out. I haven't see him in these parts, and I have a gut feelin'..."
"Alright, Alright dear" The lively otter brushed her red curly locks from her face, revealing a gleam in her eye. "We've always been some of the kinder folk in these parts, and its always a pleasure to meet new faces". Lay turned heading for attic; "Lets just hope he's not a thief"
Doland chuckled; "Don't be worryin' your pretty head, We'll fix him up and set him straight."
The raptor felt weak after his exertions. Never in his life had he been so exhausted.
"I guess there's no hope now" he sighed, sulking. The saurian had traveled all this way, just to end up dead on the streets. "No... No... I cant give up now" He reached for a pouch tied to a rope serving as a makeshift belt. Inside he found a letter scribbled in almost illegible handwriting. This was a message from his Grand-Father, given to the raptor just before he was killed by marauders. It read;
Abciance, You have to know something your mother told me before she passed away. Zayna told me of your father, and how he's still alive somewhere, searching for artifacts of power, or something of great importance. I don't remember very well, it was years ago. I don't fully understand what she was talking about. I wish she could of explained it more clearly, but she told me while she died in my arms. How I miss her. Abe, she said something about you and how you have a special gift. I don't know how this ties in with your father and these artifacts, but I know that there's some one whos out there that's looking to exploit you. That's all I know. You have to run from here. I've heard of pillaging in the area. Not anyone, but supposedly mercenaries, and there looking for some one. I had a horrible feeling that they're searching for you. Get out of here while you can, head to a town called Albreich. You have family there, please take care.
love you always, Grandpa.
Abciance finished reading the message and shed a tear for his lost grand-sire.
I won't let your death go in vain, I promised myself I'd find my father. But first my uncle... Maybe he knows something of the whereabouts of dad...
The raptor's mind raced with different thoughts, so much so that he began to feel dizzy and weak. He took slow deep breaths to clear his mind, but to no avail. Abciance was feeling drained of most of his strength. He would need to have some in reserve to keep himself from fainting. In fear of fumbling the raptor crawled to a nearby alley. He needed to find an object he could support himself on. Getting up all in one shot wasn't a good idea. Abciance remembered how he'd been brutally beaten 2 moons ago. Highway robbers had stripped him of almost all of his belongings, but he had managed to hide his grand-fathers message. He stopped crawling on all fours and just sat, his shoulders slumped. Looking grimly to the ground, the raptor could still vividly recall what happened that night. Once thing flashed through his mind repeatedly. The robbers had stolen the amulet his grand father had given him. Abciance gasped in disbelief, why was he remembering this now? Of all times. That necklace was important, whether it was for material or sentimental value the raptor wasn't sure all he knew was that he would have to get it back. But that would be near impossible. Abciance felt his mind clouding again. A certain numbness overcame him, driving his senses to become fuzzy. The raptor was losing his grip and there's nothing he could do. He managed to shuffle over to a pile of garbage bags and lay his head on one full of rotten food. He didn't care. His sight succumbed to darkness and the numbness traveled through his body. Abciance lost all cognition and slipped into the depths of his own consciousness. He was swept away in the tides of his own confusion.
