Part 3- The dish best served cold.
#3 of The Mountain Valley War
As the fire slowly fadded from dancing flames, to glowing embers, Shalako had moved from the fire. The moonlight reflected it's rays onto the wolf as he stood in the middle of the stream. He stood motionless as it's uninterested waters flowed on. The wolf held his arms out, one a little more elavated then the other. Twirling his arms in a circular motion, he twists his body as the water follows his movements, changing colors from the white glow of the moon to an amber color. Moving his body back he continues twisting his arms. Chanting inaudible words as he moves, the orbs went from being round to taking shape. The orbs gained a recognizeable figure, the two had become mirror images of Shalako mimiking his every move. As the three made another rotation, Shalako let out a loud howl to the moonlight. It was oneof power, and one of fear all intermingled into the loud noise.
Kyru, was not fully sleeping in his little hut. He was tearing himself up inside. Crawling over to the door when he heard the howl, he peered out into the night. The only light was coming from the moon and the low embers that still remained were the fire once was. Looking out at the stream, he had to look twice to make sure he wasn't seeing things. He looked one last time at the three wolves, he wasn't sure what Shalako had done.
Shalako could feel the gaze of the other wolf on him. He slowly stopped his motions, letting the two other wolf retreat back the water, they formed long strands retreating back into the stream. The wolf stepped out of the stream onto the rocks. His feet were completely dry as he stood on the rocks, pausing a moment before walking towards the shelter.
As the wolf stooped through the low doorway, he sat on the dirt floor, looking at the other wolf he smiled seeing he was still shocked. Not really making a big deal about it, he just curled up on the floor and layed his head down.
The other wolf finally regained his composure, and began to stutter out. "Sh..Shalako, what was that?"
The tired wolf lifted his head off his paws and smiled. "Just a little something I picked up along the way. I told you that we wouldn't be fighting alone."
The wolf smiled and layed his head back down on his folded grey paws. Drifting off to the only place were his wife and family remained, he left the other to do what he willed.
Looking at the sleeping fur, Kyru shook his head. He now knew that they wouldn't be alone in there vengance, yet he couldn't help but question. He stood up and exited the shelter, sitting just outside of the entrance.
"What help is a bunch of water going to do? It's a good trick but not helpfull in battle." As the wolf said this, he looked up to see a larger than life wolf standing over him.
Kyru was frozen with fear as the extremely large wolf peered down at him, it's deep green eyes piercing his soul. The wolf, dressed in Kyru and Shalako's full tribal warrior dress, frowned at him. The wind picked up to a slow breeze, causing the eagle feathers behind the wolfs ears to sway slowly. He began to speak, his thunderous voice echoing through the woods.
"Kyru, do you have such little faith in Shalako? Do you no longer believe in him?"
The frightened wolf couldn't move as he stammered. "I believe in him. I just don't know how this will work."
At that moment a female wolf walked out from behind the warrior spirit. Standing up, Kyru couldn't believe his eyes as she walked towards him. Walking to her he stared her in the eyes.
"Do you believe now Kyru?" the thunderous voice said.
"Yes I do." the wolf said as he said in shock. He couldn't believe that his wife was now standing there right in front of him. She was dead, he knew it from what Shalako said, and yet there she stood. He didn't know what to do as the wolfess dissapeared into the night. "Bring her back!" he yelled, his eyes starting to water up.
"Kyru, you shall see your wife and children again" the warrior wolf said. "but you must first face your fears."
With that the wolf took a step back, and as an eagle flew over the clearing, he fadded off into the night. Kyru now stood alone left to meditate on his goal. He couldn't believe what just happened.
Shalako continued to sleep as a shocked Kyru walked into the makeshift shelter. The wolf layed next to his friend and tried to fall asleep.
The night was long and slow for Kyru. He had often gotten up and walked into the cool night. He would look up at the stars, wanderin if his wife was staring back down at him. He was still a little sceptikal at this whole ordeal.
He sat on the side of the stream, his legs folded, just thinking to himself. "How do we even have a chance? I mean it's me and Shalako against all of them. There was almost no way that they could stand a chance." he said this all aloud, not knowing that he was under survaillance the entire time.
The wolf looked around he felt like he was being watched. Looking intently into the deep woods, the wolf could sense no presence around him. Shrugging off the feeling he looked back into the water.
Feeling a paw on his shoulder, he jumped what felt like twenty feet into the air. He shook his head puzzulledly and turned to look as he was pulled on.
"BOO!" Shalako yelled as he turned the frightened wolf around to face him.
"Man, you scared the shit outta me Shalako. Don't do that." the wolf said, not sure wether to laugh or be mad. He just punched the wolf lightly and chuckled. Then in a worried tone he asked "Shalako, how long were you back there?"
"Long enough. Besides it is time to show you how we will be victorious."
The wolf looked a little worried at Shalako as he walked into a clearing. Standing up from the rock he was sitting on, he walked slowly after the other wolf.
Shalako turned around, motioning for his friend to stay were he was. Standing completely still, Shalako looked down at the grass. The wind began to blow the tree branches at a steady pace, making them dance. The grass, swayed at his feet, their dew covered blades lapping the wolves feet.
Kyru watched in amazement, as the othervwolf lifted his head, his golden eyes were glowing brightly as the wolfs head leaned back.
Shalako, unconcious of his actions, loadly howled into the night. It was a howl that seemed to come from everywere at once, and from multiple sources.
As he brought his head back, The woods light up with glowing eyes, as Kyru began to stammer back a little.
Shalako walked a step foarward and stopped, panting heavily. Dark forms began to appear out of the woods, and walk into the clearing. Within moments, at least twenty wolves were visible standing around Shalako as he spoke in the same thunderous voice as the warrior wolf.
"Kyru, this is the greatest army created. You ask how can we win? I say how can we lose with our entire tribe behind us? How can we lose with our just cause!" and with that every wolf surrounding Shalako let out a howl that shook Kyru to his soul.
The wolves stayed there for a moment, awaiting there next command. Shalako looked at the furs surrounding him, a smile widening on his face. He nodes at one of them and they began to back into the darkness, their glowing eyes the last thing visible of them.
Kyru slowly and timidly approached Shalako, his paws shaking. He watched as the wolfs eyes returned to their oeiginal golden charm. He looked at the wolf with a smile on his muzzle. "still sceptical?"
Kyru chuckled, "No I believe now" he walked up beside his friend. "Someday you gotta teach me that."
The wolf just shook his head as he headed back to the shelter. Kyru followed him in as the sat on seperate sides of the structure.
After a while of sitting in silence, Shalako spoke up. "Kyru, we will make our attack tomorrow night. But today," he said as the sun rose. "Today we both need to eat and regain our strength."
Nodding at the wolf, he sat up straight as he breathed in the cool morning air. He could now see around what had happened, as he exited the shelter he squatted down to inspect the ground were he had conversed. He almost fell backwards when he found no pawprints besides his own, in the soil. He shot up as Shalako came up behind him.
"Come ok let's go hunting." he said with a smile.
Kyru showed his agreement by getting down on all fours and padding off next to Shalako.
Now even though they walked on two legs, their tribe had remained true to it's roots and still hunted on all fours. They found it gave them better speed and manouverability. Although they did fight standing, when they got within fifty yards of their enemy, they would switch to fighting on all fours. This was they way they had always done it and if Shalako had any say, it's how it would stay.
They had spent most of the day fooling around like old friends do. Not really hunting, but more along the lines of pouncing and nipping each other as they walked through the woods.
The retreating sun reminded them of their goal. The two wolves split up and circled around a field.
Shalako hid in the high grass at the edge of the field as Kyru circled to the other side. He looked out across the field as a stag walked out of the woods. Shalako grinned as he saw the back of the brown wolf.
The setting sun was directly in the stags eyeline as it grazed on the clover coming up from the ground. The two wolves leaped from their hiding spots, almost in unison and ran at the feeding stag. It had no idea that the two were there until he felt their teeth sinking into his throat and back. The stag feel to the ground, bleeding to death.
Shalako let go of the dead stags neck and looked over at his friend, blood dripping off his muzzle. "Just like the old days huh Kyru?"
The wolf just chuckled and took the fromt two legs of the stag. Walking to the other side, Shalako took it's back legs in his paws and lifted it up.
They carried their meal back to camp as the sun dropped behind the treeline and, branching out it's golden and amber arms, retreated for the night. The two wolves sat around the fire, but unlike last night, they had food to eat that would surpress their desire.
The two were so hungry that at first they didn't even cook the meat, they just ate it raw. As the moon rose over them, they both knew, without any words being said, that their time for reckoning was almost at hand. Long had this moment been coming for them, and now that it was finally here, they were overwhelmed with emotion. Even though they did not show it to each other. That is, willingly of course.
Shalako had picked up on Kyrus emotional state. He could tell the wolf was getting restless and wanted to go. Shalako knew from experience that going into battle anxious could have seviere consequences.
The wolf stood up and looked at Kyru. "Well my old friend, now is as good of a time as ever if we are going to start this." With that he headed off into the woods, with Kyru tagging at his heels.
The two wolves travelled for hours until they came to the edge of the forest. The two stopped just a few feet shy of the open field leading up to the camp. The two looked out over the field as they stepped out from the trees.
A lookout on the camps extererior saw the two wolves emerge and immediatly ran behind a building, sounding a wailing alarm that resulted in countless wolves responding along the outside of the camp. Tyson was busily working, training new cubs when he heard the alarm.
He immediatly knew that it was Shalako and Kyru. What he didn't know was the new things that Shalako could do. Running from the makeshift ring he shoved through his small, yet affective army of wolves and stood infront of them, a cocky look on his face.
Yelling to the wolves, Tyson smiled eavily. "What are you two doing here? Do you two have a death wish?"
Shalako turned to Kyru, "Hold your tongue." he then took a few steps forward as his eyes went to that same amber glow as in the forest as he was lifted into the air, as if by some unseen hands.
A few of the wolves faultered as they saw the wolfs actions. Tyson was awestruck at the show, it was unlike anything he had ever seen before. He whipped around and yelled at his forces to stand their ground. As glowing eyes appeared behind the two wolves, the mass of furs, although still loyal, become stirred and nervous.
Kyru waited until Shalako's own forces were completely amassed. He waited as the wolf came back to reality, stating deep into the soul of his enemy. Nodding to nobody in particular, Kyru took the hint and howled loudly.
"Give them hell!!" he yelled as Kyru charged out of the woods, followed by their entire force of spirit wolves.
Tysons forces seemed to question thier leader as they were advance upon. Their leader turned to them, "what are you waiting for you cowards?!?! FIGHT!!!" with that, the two factions collided.
The battlefield was just a mass of fur and blood as Shalako searched out Tyson. Kyru appeared in front of him, just as he bit down hard on one of the other wolves neck, crushing his windpipe and killing him instantly. Nodding at Shalako, he moved on to take another opponant.
Shalako came up upon the other leader as his forces were steadily loosing numbers. He lunged at the wolf, catching him completely by surprise, and knocked him into the muck. Looking up at Shalako, Tyson glared at the wolf as he ran his claws along Shalakos muzzle, cutting into his flesh.
The wolfs rage multiplied as he saw red and bit down hard on the other wolfs arm, causing him to yip out of pain. Shalako let out a growl as he let go of the wolfs arm. Shalako had become stronger from his learned ability and was now in complete control of the situation. Shalako's forces were now retreating back to the spirit world, now their was only Kyru, Shalako, and Tyson left alive on the bloody battle ground.
Kyru let Shalako deal with their enemy as he felt fit. Shalako, noticing that thier was nobody left besides them, knew it was time to finish this. He smiled as he pinned the wolf under him.
"Please." Tyson whimpered out.
Shalako grinned menacingly,"Offer me power."
"All that I have."
"Offer me riches."
"All the riches I have! Just let me live." he Hagen to whimper and cry as he said this."
"Offer me all that I ask for!"
The whimpering wolf cried, "Anything you want and more."
He smiled and lifted his head up. "I want my family back you son of a bitch!" with those words he opened his maw and bit down on the wolf, sinking his teeth deep into Tysons neck, producing a loud snap that left the now dead wolf with a cowardly look on his face.
Lifting the wolfs limp, lifeless head up he let it fall, splattering into the mud. He looked up to the stars and let put a howl. One that, this time, comforted Kyru, and was one of victory.
Shalako lowered his head and looked at Kyru. The brown wolf was panting heavily and his fur was matted down and stained with blood. He was slightly injured, cuts ran along his muzzle and his arms, but it was nothing the tough warrior couldn't handle. The wolf walked to Shalako and squatted down, placing one of his paws on the wolfs shoulders.
"Shalako, we are victorious!" he said in a joyous tone.
Thinking back on his family, his wife, everything he had lost, his heart was saddened despite the victory. He looked up at the wolf, there was a saddness taking over his amber gaze.
"We have won a war that should have never been fought Kyru, not something to be proud about."
The wolfs just stood there, the soft moonlight illuminating the battlefield. Each one had their own thoughts on what had happened and why they had fought. The main reason for the both of them seemed to be revenge. Now they could rebuild, start their tribe anew.
The only trouble was, with their wives gone, how were they going to rejuvinate their tribe to its formor glory.
