The Christmas Gift

"Hey pal we're here, my money."

"Huh?" James awoke from his rather pleasant daydreams, to realize that in a shabby old taxi, he had reached his destination. "Oh, right..." slipping his wallet from his back pocket, James pulled out a twenty and handed it to the driver.

"Keep the change, and wish me luck." He smiled at the man in the driver's seat.

"Hey, from what you said, luck wont be needed. He's going to be happy, don't worry." The taxi cab driver laughed as James got out of the car, giving him a him a thumbs up and a smile.

James padded the rest of the way down the street, his dark blue fur accented by the moonlight shining down upon it. He couldn't really believe what he was doing, he was supposed to arrive over two weeks later than he did, he hadn't told Tundra anything...

He grinned, pulling the key that his love had mailed him out of his pocket, stepping up to the door of Tundra's rented house. He hoped Tundra wouldn't be angry...

It was the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring... until James walked in.

As quietly as only a feline could pad, James snuck into the house. He looked around as shivers of excitement ran down his spine, mixed with the slightest fear of being caught. He walked around for a moment, admiring his mates taste in décor...

A noise! James looked around, the door was still open! He closed it quickly as he heard footsteps come from a hallway.

Hide! He had to hide! A Christmas tree, there was a tree in the corner, he quickly got down on his knees and crawled under it, staring out from beneath, hoping he wouldn't be noticed..

An eighteen year old husky padded slowly through the hallway, into the living room. "Is... Is anybody there?" He looked around.

James grinned a wide smile to himself, remaining as silent as he could. It was hard, he wanted to jump out and hug the husky as tightly as his arms would allow him, it had been so long since he'd last seen his mate...

The Husky's name was Tundra, and (In the eyes of James) Tundra was the most amazing creature on the face of the earth, he watched from under the tree, even in the darkness of the room the husky had such a shiny coat of fur, beautiful.

Tundra padded around for a while, occasionally checking behind random items, curtains, couches, anything that seemed like someone would hide in it. He had only, after all, moved in a few months ago and was still getting used to the neighborhood.

Sighing contently, Tundra gave a yawn and padded back down the hall to his bedroom.

Another sigh came, from James this time, one of relief. He had not been caught. James took a moment to himself to look up to the tree, the soft green needles and smell of fresh hazing softly in the air, reminding him of Christmases before, reminding him of candy, time together, and presents... Presents!

James knew what he would do, he hadn't really had a plan aside from coming to Tundra's house, and he had already done that. He would sleep under the tree! By the time Tundra awoke in the morning, he'd truly believe in Santa Clause.

And So, James Kat curled up under the tree, smiling softly to himself as he fell quickly asleep...

"Oh... My... God..." Tundrafox stood there, maw slowly forming from gaping disbelief, to a sincere and mischievous grin. He watched James sleeping silently under the tree, shaking his head softly "Crazy bastard..." he chuckled softly to himself, wiping a tear of joy from his eye and giving his mate a soft kick on the back "Wake up, you..."

James merely rolled over with a soft snore, causing Tundra to giggle softly. Shaking his head and walking into the kitchen Tundra began to make some coffee, occasionally looking back to his sleeping mate.

He looked back to the coffee, done, broiling hot. Tundra took a long slow pensive sip from his coffee, yet again the small grin playing at his lips. He couldn't believe it, James was here... and... They... could be together. Finally after so many years...

Tundra just couldn't help himself, he set down his steaming mug and padded over to James, laid himself down aside his mate and wrapped his arms around him.

James felt a soft nuzzling on the back of his neck, and grinned to himself. "Mmm... Good morning my love..." He purred softly.

"I can't believe you snuck over here, crazy bastard..." Tundra spoke softly, giving James a soft squeeze.

"Yeah, it's good to see you too." James chuckles softly to himself and rolled over, staring deep into the eyes of the one he loved. "I love you so much..." and with those words, for the first time in years, James Kat planted a kiss on the lips of his mate, and it felt good.

Their lips locked, tongues met warm and wet inside their muzzles, Tundra let out a soft murr as he gave his loved one another squeeze, James broke the kiss. "I love you... So much..."

"mm.. get up, I wanna give you something..." Tundra got to his feet as he finished his words, smiling down at the one he loved.

He took James by the hand and led him down the small hallway to his room. "What's up, Hun?" James asked, tilting his head in a peculiar manner, as Tundra got to his knees and began digging around under his bed.

"I'm trying... To find... Your Christmas pres-Aha!"

"Oh hun, you didn't have to get me- oh... wow..." James gasped in mid sentence as Tundra pulled out and opened a smallish box, revealing a spiked black leather collar to his mate.

James had always had a thing for collars, and what he saw before him made him happier than he had been in a long time. He swiftly wrapped his arms around the one he loved and hugged him tightly, a soft murr erupting from his muzzle.

But with the happiness, came grief. He had forgotten to get Tundra a present! How could he have been so stupid?!

"Hun.. I don't have anything for you..." he trailed off, splaying his ears back and looking down.

Tundra smiled and wrapped the collar around James's neck, connecting the ends to keep it in place as he planted a soft kiss on his mate's muzzle.

"James, you probably spent all your cash trying to get down here, it's alright."

And so, the days went on as the two spent as much time together as possible, until one day, walking through the mall, James just happened to pass a jewelry store...

James began to work odd jobs around the city, not telling his mate of anything he had planned, except that he was soon going to get tundra his "Belated Christmas Gift."

"James Kat! I demand you tell me what you're planning to do!" shouted Tundra playfully from across the yard, while James took out the neighbor's garbage for a small bit of cash.

"You'll see hun, you'll see!" he mused, grinning happily to himself.

The next week passed and James sat at the small round table in Tundra's dining room, counting out twenties tens and five dollar bills. He grinned to himself, tonight would be the night..

"Hey, hun? I'm going to go out for a little while, I love you!"

Getting a reply from Tundra he quickly headed out the door with a large grin erupting onto his muzzle.

No less than fifteen minutes of walking later, James arrived at the mall. He began to venture into the depths of the hectic mall, weaving in and out of other people and furs as they rushed hurriedly to their next destination. James merely kept his eyes out for a certain jewelry story he'd walked into about a week back...

Tundra sighed and stretched softly, his slender form leaning back to lie on a couch. Boredom engulfed his mind; he wondered where James went...

He looked at the clock; James had been gone about an hour now, what could be up?

The telephone rang.

Tundra quickly got up and answered it, "Hello?"

"Hey, hun, it's James, you know that-," his voice was interrupted by a grunt and a scuttling noise, with the whispered words 'don't you dare spill that on this coat!' "You know that restaurant on the ritzy end of town? The... uh... hell, whatever it's called, afew blocks away from the Wal-Mart? Meet me down there as fast as you can, I've got the seats reserved and everything, I'm already waiting on you."

Tundra blinked "I didn't think you'd saved up that much money... But okay hun, I'll be there as soon as possible."

James sat at a booth in the large Italian restaurant, drumming his fingers on the table excitedly, where was Tundra? He couldn't help but keep grinning, tonight would be one of the best nights in his life, by far...

Ha! There he was! James let out a whistle as Tundra walked in through the large double doors, waving with his paw, signaling Tundra to the table.

"Hey, hun," he smiled warmly, getting up and kissing Tundra softly on the cheek as they sat back down in booths opposite from eachother. Tundra was the first to speak.

"So, is this the big surprise you were saving up for?" Tundra said, blushing softly with a boyish giggle.

James grinned, it seemed as though he'd done a lot of grinning lately...

"Oh, no. That's coming, my love..." he clapped his paws together, signaling a waiter over to the table.

"But that should really wait for later. For now, let's eat." Giving Tundra a final wink and handing him a menu he leaned back in his seat.

The hour went on quickly as the two lovers ate, chatted about life, exchanged afew stories about their childhood and such other things. Until, finally, James felt it ready to reveal his big surprise...

He cleared his throat "Tundra, we've been together for... ohh... roughly five years... we've done quite a bit together, hell, even snuck across states just to see eachother.."

He smiled, getting a soft blush and a nod from Tundra.

He smiled softly and went on, "I've loved you ever since we were first mated.. through the years I've told you every little secret I've ever had, and asked your every opinion from every question ever on my mind, and now, I have another question..."

James stood to his feet, removing a small box from his pocket as Tundra's eyes went wide. James got down on his right knee, his left foot planted firm as he held up the box and opened it to Tundra, a beautiful diamond ring

"Tundrafox, will you marry me?"
