#15 of Astral High

There we go, a second chapter for today!

We came back down to the meadow, and Markus started hacking away at the tall grass, destroying a small area. The grass was about a foot and a half tall, so it was nice that he'd brought his machete, as well as his girl friend, Tim, and Tim's girlfriend, who was also Daniel's sister.

Ted was digging into the fire works while the girls set up the table and put resealable bags of chips and snacks on it. I helped Seth set up all the chairs, and was startled by the sudden explosion a few feet away from me.

"Ah! God, could you like, throw those things somewhere else?"

"I'm mutilating the grass for the fire pit." [Ted]

"Fire pit? Are you kidding me?"

"No, why wouldn't we have a fire pit?"

"'Cause we're gonna go back and shoot off fire works, aren't we?" [Seth]

"No, we decided to stay down here and light off our own fire works. We'll be able to see there's and our's." [Markus]

"Also, the little kids are gonna come down here with Logan an hour or two after dinner, so this is really our only time to kick back and blow up innocent plants." [Tim]

"Well at least our shared love of pyrotechnics can bring us together." [Ted]

"I got dad to let me bring my sling shot, we can shoot fire crackers at stuff."

"Awesome."

"So, we're just gonna hang out here until five?" [Me]

"Yup." [Markus]

"Oka-" I was cut short by seven fire crackers going off at once, churning a small line of the ground as they did so.

"Jeez, do you really need to do that?" [Me]

"Want the forest to burn down?" [Ted]

"Fair point. Hey, Markus, hand me your machete."

"No, get your own." [Markus]

"But-"

"Alex, I had him bring a couple more. They're over here." [Markus's Girlfriend]

"Oh, thanks, uhh..."

"Valentine."

"Ah. Well, thanks Valentine." I grabbed a machete from the table and dug at the roots of the grass a bit. Normally I would've considered this bad for the blade, but it was already rusted over, so I figured it didn't matter.

After gutting a line in the earth, I got an M80, ushered everyone further away, and lit it off. It blew up, displacing dirt and making enough of a crater that I was proud of my work. Me and Ted lit off a couple more, placing a few fire crackers here and there, and they all went off, destroying that patch on the ground. To further condemn the place, Ted emptied a lighter onto the ground and lit it on fire with a single match. After that, the girls and their boyfriends sat down around the fire, while us guys went off and tossed M80s and firecrackers around the area, and I was surprised by Ben, who was daring enough to stick an M80 in a wasp nest. He'd gone across the river and blown off a few fire crackers over there, but at some point decided to stick an M80 inside a wasp nest. He came back laughing, and Ted joined in after he explained. At some point, my dad came down and told us to come eat, since it was already six. Not like we could tell, it was as if the day had gotten even brighter.

We got back to the house and stayed around the tables to eat and talk. Not much happened just... life. We ate hotdogs and burgers, had chips and snacks, and there were plates of cookies and other finger food. After eating, we went back down to the river and took a bunch of marsh mallows and gram crackers with us. It was getting dark, and Markus had the brains to think of putting a bunch of firewood in a wheel barrow and rolling it down there with us.

We just kinda sat around the fire for a minutes, eating chips and drinking soda. It's nice to just stop and appreciate nature once in a while. You know, as long as you're not in total nature and have weapons around. Otherwise we'd all be cowering around Daniel.

About twenty minutes or so went by before the younger kids came down here and joined us. We just gave the sparklers and told them to stay around the fire while us older kids go and launch explosives into the sky. Which we did.

...

I woke up in the morning holding Seth on top of me and being held from both sides by Ted and Daniel, feeling another underneath me. I turned my head a little, and felt Bens scales on the back of my neck. I didn't care, I was too tired to do anything, and everyone's breath and smell mingling just knocked me out...

I don't know when I woke up, but I know it felt early in the morning and that I was in my parents' car with Seth, riding home. I didn't mind the idea of going back to sleep, so I laid my head back on Seth's shoulder and... didn't feel Seth's shoulder. I looked over and saw Daniel's pecks in my face, and Ted sitting in his lap, asleep and drooling. I laid my head in Ted's lap again and let myself drift off, lost in the immense sleepiness that had become my mind.

I woke up a third time, and this time I didn't drift off again, mostly because I couldn't even fathom falling back asleep. I was sitting in my bed, being held by Seth, and I turned over and woke him up.

"Hmm... Hm?"

"Hey, you wanna wake up?"

"Huh? Sure... What time is it?"

I glanced over at the clock, "It's nine thirty three. ... AM."

"Uh. ... Wait, but we left Mark's house at eleven."

"Did we?"

"Yeah... Huh. That explains my hunger. Would your parents make us breakfast?"

"Probably. I'm hungry too. Come on, let's go ask."

"Okay... You should carry me."

"Daniel isn't here, Seth."

"Aww... But... how will I get downstairs?"

"By walking. Come on, I'll teach you."

"Okay..."

I got out of bed and stumbled a little as I did so, and he got out on his own side. We headed downstairs to where Dad was buttoning up his shirt.

"Hey, you guys are up."

"Yeah, should I assume we're fending for ourselves this morning?" [Me]

"Yeah, but not here. There's nothing like cereal, and your mom's not feeling very well, I took her into the hospital last night, but she's just getting a cold."

"Oh, that's good." [Seth]

"Good?" [Dad]

"Well, it could've been something wrong with the kid, right?"

"True. Heh, you'd make a good father, Seth. Well, I'm off." He headed out the door and we just kinda looked at eachother, knowing we were both starving.

I grabbed my backpack and went out the door, Seth following. We went to his house, but apparently his parents already went to work, and he didn't have any cereals worth eating. We went to Ted's and found him home alone, even Daniel wasn't there.

"Hey, what're you guys doing here?" [Ted]

"Food no longer exists." [Seth]

"Oh, right. Yeah, I'm hungry too. My parents left me some money before going to work, saying I'd have to go into town if I wanted to eat."

"Ugh, great, we have to walk around even more for food, ugh." [Me]

"Yup. I texted Daniel a few minutes ago and I'm just waiting for him. He's bringing money of his own, maybe we could stop by your guys' places so you can grab your own money."

"Yeah." [Seth]

"Maybe." [Me]

"Okay, curiosity's a bitch, Seth, why do you like your cousin?" [Ted]

"Huh?" [Seth]

"Markus, he's a fuckin' jerk."

"Yeah, he kind of is." [Me]

"Not really." [Seth]

"No, 'not really' would be if he just joked about us being gay. He teased us a few times, complained about it, and didn't avoid using the word 'gay' as an insult." [Ted]

"Well, I don't know, I... I guess he was my only friend, so... I don't know, I just put up with it." [Seth]

"He's not your only friend." [Me]

"Was, I said was. I mean come on, he was the only person who wouldn't complain about the pentagrams for so long, and then... And then I met you guys..."

"Aww... Come here, I wanna give you hug." He walked over to me and hugged me, and a few seconds later, Daniel walked in.

"Oh, good, you're here. We can go." [Ted]
