Chapter Two: Taunting the Metal
“BRING… BRING… BRING!”
Suddenly Finn shot up, he felt alert and alive; everything felt horrid and he felt everything and he didn’t know what to do. He felt horrible and alive somehow at the same time, and he didn’t know how that made him felt. He shot up but his legs hurt and his lungs felt like they were burning.
Yet at the same time he felt like he could fire a million bolts of electricity and he could run up the walls and manage to pull some Isaac level magic and fly. To him everything felt like it was in his grasp and he wanted to but at the same time he had a horrible headache. He stood up and walked forward, he wished he could walk faster and he did.
Yet that seemed to have the effect of making his entire body burn, everything burned in fact. This was worse than the time that Isaac managed to spread genetically modified pink eye through the team and they had to invent special perception filters to hide their eyes, the illusion was just too unbelievable for anyone.
Walking towards the bathroom, he leaned into the door and practically fell through the door as he stepped into the shower. Turning the handle, he felt the water on his sink and for half a second everything felt nice and then his entire skin felt burned. Looking at the shower knob it was set on cold.
And then seemingly his body caught up and he felt progressively colder as time went on. Backing out of the shower, he felt the horrid burning on his sink again. Backing into the shower, he adjusted the knob and set it to where he hoped that the normal temperature was.
Mentally he backed up and walked back into the shower where everything seemed better now. Finn walked forward and stepped in, grabbing the soap he felt it in his hand and it felt different. He wiped the soap over his body and felt the dirt clean off his body.
And then he grabbed the conditioner and shampoo combo and threw it in his hair, his blond hair felt like it was falling out. He reached up and grabbed it but none of his hair had fallen out. Finn wondered what the hell was happening to his body; he stepped out of the shower and looked at his hands.
It didn’t feel like he was on a peyote trip again, once again thanks to Isaac and a harebrained plan. He looked up at the mirror and everything was okay with his body, nothing seemed different about him. He put his hand against the mirror and as he wiped away the steam his hand felt like pins and needles.
Finn looked over at the floor installed fur and scale dyer with a face of uncomfortableness and didn’t want to know what drying with regular towels would be like. Taking a breath in, he walked forward and tried to ignore the incoming pain.
…
Walking out of the bathroom, Finn struggled as he adjusted to his clothes; but just as with the other feelings he quickly either adjusted and he managed to quickly walk down stairs. Going down stairs he swore that his ears were burning as he adjusted to the tiniest change in altitude.
And then he arrived in his kitchen, it was the same as it was twenty years ago when his grandparents lived in the house. Now they lived in the guest room, barely coming out and enjoying the presence of a materializer. Instead his two parents were sitting down and enjoying the peace of the morning as Finn came down.
The two adult sharks both were ignoring each other, seeming both focused on other things. For his mother, see was scanning through the newspaper and enjoying the stories and other such. Finn sat down at the table and wasn’t welcomed or even properly noticed as such.
Nodded in approval of the status quo he could only walk over to the cereal drawer and picked from his wide range of sugar infused candies. Deciding to pick the one that looked like it had the least taste; he placed it in a bowl and walked over to the table. Suddenly from above a white mechanical arm extended down from the ceiling and placed it self over the bowl. Waiting as always Finn waited a few seconds, as in the time that he could walk over to the refrigerator; the materializer above his head generated milk and allowed it to flow into his bowl.
With the noise above them, it was only habits that allowed his parents to notice their shark child. His stepmother put her newspaper down, but never taking her eyes off the real story. Meanwhile his father stopped tinkering with the device he was working on and also turned his head.
“Good morning son, how was your night?” His father asked as he never took his eyes off the device and seemed to still be playing with his little invention. Finn quickly swallowed the first spoonful of cereal and tried to ignore the burning in his throat. And then as the flakes of wheat and sugar hit his stomach, he suddenly felt like an angel.
“Good, how’s that device for the Outsiders?” Finn answered once again for the status quo. He then waited the approximate 3.9 seconds or so that it would take for his father to turn back towards the device and instead let his stepmother turn her attention towards Finn. Waiting for his stepmother’s first words, he took another bit of his now raisin filled cereal and strangely didn’t feel anything from it.
“Oh good, well I will be home just a little late, about two o’clock so don’t bring any boys home, both of you and make sure that your dad’s stepmother has her robotic ear adjusted, she says she hears strange things at night, I’ll let you decide who is causing it.” Finn’s stepmother said with seemingly no sympathy towards her child as she quickly placed a black jacket over her dress and walked out the door.
…
“So how was your morning?” Isaac asked as they drove along, only two hours until school started at nine and that meant they could meet up at the outsider’s base and confer on tonight’s patrols. Once again Michelle was always on time and still despite not being in charge still lead them.
“Well you know human mother still takes control of a loveless marriage and you know how that goes.” Finn said as he managed a text message and tried to make sure Isaac wasn’t going to crash them into a stop light… again. Still he tried to show he had some faith in Isaac and ducked his head three times.
“Oh that’s good.” Isaac said as he seemingly skipped over Finn’s word and continued on. “Now then today, I am going to be looking at your looking at your little liquid, I took a look at it last night and it reacted strangely.”
“Exactly what I would say to my parents, we get along so well don’t we Isaac, we should get married and have kids, good I would love to have a kid maybe we could adopt one of our friends, like Tiberius!” Finn said as he waited for a reaction from Isaac and like he expected got absolutely nothing.
“Well, I was thinking and I think their might be some sort of nanoparticle inside of the liquid and good question, it might have to do with the strange acting metals that you and Michelle found, so if you could maybe you could run over after school and get a sample of that metal?” Isaac asked as he focused on the road, Finn stopped for a second and didn’t say anything,
“Ah yeah thanks for that and look at this, another good question you are on a roll today. To that, I don’t think it’s related to Ross’s metal, he has a Grade 5 Titanium alloy mixture, which means he is good at absorbing punches, but bad at heat, but it wouldn’t absorb electricity, it has to be something that can smartly shift its ions in order to absorb electrons.” Isaac said once again seemingly ignoring Finn’s question and lack of silence.
“Oh that’s good, now then about our children, what do you think about dragon children, no I’d be too worried about them flying away, or maybe we could clone ourselves but I might get attracted to your copy.” Finn said as he adjusted the radio.
“No, no, no, we’d need a surrogate mother, but still children with you would be a fun experience, I just hope you’d be able to schedule enough free time for what I plan to do to you.” Isaac said as he glanced over to Finn who passively rolled his eyes back at Isaac.
“Do you just try to be an asshole or is passively flirting with everyone just a superpower for you?” Finn asked as he tried to ignore Isaac’s saying.
“Hey if you’re offering, my standards are pretty low. Number One: Must be a bipedal person capable of speech. Two: Must have face.” Isaac said as he briefly took his eyes of the wheel and gave a look over to Finn. Finn then turned the music up further and tried to defuse the situation.
“I think you just insulted all the faceless people.” Finn said. Asshole-ish humor, Finn thought to himself; what better to use your enemies own live ammunition against them. And on whom better than Isaac who sped up, Finn could feel him being annoyed as he tried to get to the base.
And with that they arrived at Isaac’s garage, the shark parking himself in the perception filter laced building. Too someone outside they might have seen Isaac’s “parents” lecturing him as he apparently was returning from what could only be booze, hookers and drugs. Too Finn, he saw Ross standing over the liquid with Iren next to her.
“Consider yourself lucky that I like driving you to work Harris!” Isaac yelled with his fist raised to Finn as they both got out of the car and joined the other Outsiders. Everyone was their except for Erick who was probably either caught up with his parents, explaining the smell of shark oil in his skin and that would have opened up way to many possibilities for them to ignore.
“Oh please you dam well know you love to drive me to work, see me in the morning after my shower, my body wet and slick you probably touch yourself at night thinking about me.” Finn said giving Isaac crap as they joined Iren and Ross looking at the canister of liquid set nicely on the table.
“Hey how many times I think about you during night while my hand happens to be touching my private parts is my own private business.” Isaac said as he managed to make Finn, Iren and quite amazingly Ross blush at the same time, he stood still for a second and realized he might have gone just a bit too far. “Okay, somethings were said but if I marry you in a shotgun wedding can we just forget about it?”
“Yeah, I’m just going to let that one boil out in the sun for a while, now then Iren what are you feeling?” Finn said as she gave both of them that look and put cups over Ross’s ears. “Ah yes mother bird, please do forgive me for disturbing your flock.”
“Please Finn, I only have one person I can talk too about real girl thinks, do not mess him up with your cursing and stupid talk.” Iren said as she leaned over and intensely gave a glare to Isaac. Who stayed back for a second, the gravity shark was right not to want to mess.
“Fine then, Ross we talk about stupid stuff but so long as you remain Iren’s gay best friend and child at the same time, then make sure you keep to her interests and do develop your own personality.” Finn said laughing as the metallic dragon nervously laughed along with Finn.
“You know speaking of parents, I think that this Sigmund guy might be right in saying everything is related to doing the and excuse my French, dirty deeds, because you too are totally his parents, sorry Ross, creepy Uncle Isaac will just be over here looking at dirty pictures on his super computer.” Isaac said, then stopping himself for a second when he realized he kind of proved himself wrong in a bad way.
“Please, he can have his own interests, but you know he’s so young and vulnerable.” Iren said looking at Ross as he tried to stay out of the two’s argument. “You know you can date someone so long as they’re my friends and you know they aren’t a drug dealer or a supervillain or posed to make a heal face turned, you know just run everything by me.”
“See your doing it again, come on Ross you must have a crush on someone just tell us.” Finn said as he made that smile that just made Ross open up like a cheerleader during play offs.
“Well I kind of do have a crush on Billy, and he kind of asked me to go to semi-formal, I was thinking of skipping school and going to look for a suit to wear.” Ross said as Finn was surprised that Iren hadn’t interrupted half way and answered for him. Ross looked relieved as he seemingly got something off his chest.
“Well that is good; today two of your teachers are off so you won’t miss any important, especially anything taught by Ms. Floret, she’ll get stuck on a sentence like glue to a finger. So we can go shopping.” Iren said and just before Finn could give her that look of over parenting, the door behind them opened and Michelle stepped out.
“I’ll go with the two of you as well; I have an arrangement at the mall and need to make sure that Ross doesn’t skip out on patrol again.” Michelle said as Iren knew that she couldn’t fight any further, her face looked absolutely destroyed and Finn couldn’t tell if she was sad or completely destroyed. He might have gloated, have not for the phone in his pocket.
Pulling it out, he knew that he couldn’t ignore the callers. Looking around the base, Finn wondered if he could sneak out without having anyone making a big deal about it. Currently Isaac seemed to be injecting a mouse with the green liquid and Iren and Michelle were arguing over something, so just backing up he grabbed the door knob and showed himself out.
…
“So we called you here today, Finn to talk about Michelle.” Finn sat down with a cup of what looked to be hard black coffee in front of him. Looking around he was obviously in a military family’s home. Medals were hung and statues were placed around the mantle and the multiple American flags inculpated in wooden box faced with glass told him all he needed to know.
“Well I figured, I don’t think you would want me to come over and ramble about Isaac for forty-five minutes, also I do have school in forty-five minutes so I don’t know can we keep this short.” Finn said as he tried to make a good first impression, he then went over that thought again. He wasn’t Michelle’s boyfriend at least he didn’t think he was. He leaned back against the couch and then stood back up; the couch was like a brick.
“It will be a short as it has too so long as we get all the details and all the information we need to know then we will be fine.” Michelle’s father said as he walked into the room drinking what looked to be pure coffee. He spelled military, from the camo sweatpants and camo shirt as well as the toned dad body.
“Ok, so what do you want to talk about?” Finn said, he wasn’t even going to take a sip of that coffee, after how his body felt this morning then he didn’t want to drink anything that wasn’t prepared by his own hands.
“Well Michelle is a little bit of a hardass, not that we’d say that to her.” Michelle’s father said as surprised Finn in his openness about Michelle. He would have spit out the coffee had he had the courage to drink it, instead he stayed down on the couch and nodded like a good person who didn’t want to die.
“If you couldn’t tell my family is very much a military family, we don’t hide it but you know some people are beyond obvious like that Isaac boy she hangs out, he is all levels of stupid.” Michelle’s mother said as she waved her hand in the air and once again surprised Finn with how much they were saying.
“I’d say that as well, but I think I could tell and I’d like to thank you for your service to the country sir.” Finn said hoping maybe then he wouldn’t get his head bit off. He felt like a Jew in the middle of a pork farm, if he touched anything, said anything, or looked the wrong way then he was going to get his head bit off.
“Oh thank you, not many respectful kids like you. But Michelle, I think we might have hammered in the lesson a bit too well on our front, but being in this city and having five generations of people who severed… well” Michelle’s dad said as he tried to do his best. “I want her to serve but I feel like we’re making her ignore other things and hurting her in the long run, even at my age I wasn’t where she was in the military base, I’m amazed but I’m worried.”
“Oh well, Michelle is very military focused. She does have that one track mind, and I can’t say I don’t much else on what she does, but she is a very well-adjusted individual and I’m sure she will find somewhere else to focus her attention.” Finn said knowing that wasn’t true, but he didn’t want to worry Michelle’s parents but sometimes he did wonder.
“She’s trying to make something of herself.”
Finn looked over and as it seemed Isaac had managed to catch up with him. The shark had a disappointed look as he walked over the couch and sat down next to Finn. Looking down at the coffee he grabbed it and quickly piped it down in one gulp, Finn could only hope that Isaac didn’t get them killed.
“Sorry for interrupting Finn, but when you take my car without my permission suddenly things become a lot less negotiable.” Isaac said as he sat down and looked in front of him, he saw Michelle’s parents and then realized that he might have just went in a little too deep.
“So you believe that Michelle is trying to make something of her; that being focused and putting her attention into one organization will better herself in a more efficient way than say if she spread out her attention.” Michelle’s father said as he tried to comprehend what exactly the second shark was saying.
“And bingo was his name’o; think about it this way; if she stays will organizations that are primarily for fighting and such, she will improve her fighting and such. No need for half-baked efforts, as such she might be trying to wave off what she things is a shadow of her less attractive qualities.” Isaac said as Finn still tried to smile and keep himself from saying nothing wholly stupid, but with Isaac around that was becoming more and more trouble.
“Really Jungian psychology, even Freudian would have made a little more sense with in this topic.” Finn said as he said that stupid thing that he would have always said. He looked over to Michelle’s parents who were being to realize that he had just suggested Michelle had “daddy” issues.
“I’m sorry are you implying that you’re saying that we and Michelle have some sort of shattered relationship?” Michelle’s father said as seeming the room darkened and the air around him turned stiff. It was then that Finn had realized he might have screwed up in saying that out loud.
“No sir, I’m just saying that well Michelle is a very action oriented person and that with in her own personality, she might have problems multitasking the process of handing what would appear to be your significant influence on her personality with in her mind.” Finn said as Isaac sneered at him, he might have said it a different way but the message was the same all the way, Michelle had daddy issues.
…
Finn tried to keep his eyes on the board, the hologram projection board was supposed to keep him away with all of its light and such. Even still with the five hour school days and the increased methods they used to teach in the shortened periods, it was still hell for Finn to stay up.
He tried to stay up keep himself balanced and as he looked up at the board and attempted to absorb the advance calculus that the teacher was trying to explain to the class. And yet his head started to tip down and placed it against the normal rough and abrasive desk plate, it felt like a collection sheep trying to cushion his head.
And then even as he tried to continue on listening and absorbing the information he found that it hurt for even his ears to work, he kept trying to stay up and not fall asleep in class but the sheep in his mind started to jump and he was ready for counting. He wanted to learn and with that he shook off the feelings of doziness and looked up.
“Come back to bed Finn, we’ll make sure no one notices you sleeping.” Finn looked down, he didn’t say that and no one else noticed it, so looking down suddenly the desk was covered in tiny sheep that all were looking up at him and seemingly expecting him to lay on them. “It’s okay, we like to be crushed.”
“Oh sweet Sigmund.” Finn said as he gave up and closed his eyes, he was just going to make a face plant for the sleep. Even as the sheep looked up in horror and ran away from the falling shark plummeting for them, Finn gave up and gave just wanted sleep.
And then he felt a hand reach back and grab him, his fall was suspended and he woke up. Looking forward all of the sheep were gone and a hand was placed on his shoulder, keeping him up. It was a scaled black hand and looking back he found himself looking at Earl.
“Howdy their friend it seems you nearly took a face plant to your desk, but good thing I was here, else you might have crushed that nose of yours.” The lizard said, Finn laughed a moment. Earl supposedly was one of the children of the Second Gold Rush, when it was revealed that all that radioactive testing in the desert had no only screwed with the land scape and messed up the ecosystem, it had also generated many heavy metals, and one of those was gold.
“Thank you Earl, I’m sorry I don’t know what’s going on with me; I wasn’t up that late last night.” Finn said trying to explain his lack of knowledge about what happened last night. He didn’t turn back and look at the lizard, because while the teacher might not have noticed his head falling towards the ground, if his head turned then she would dam well know.
“Well maybe you should stop what you’re doing and come with me after school, come out to the range and look around for some gold and other treasures that all came from a bygone era.” Earl said, Finn wasn’t stupid enough to think of it as a date. Still he never went that far out into the desert and he really only explored the ruins of warehouses and subway platforms. It might be fun to go out and explore the desert.
“I don’t get to go out much at nights, but I think today I can make an exception; so yeah I’ll go with you.” Finn said as he put his hand back and shook the hand of the lizard, he could feel Earl beaming behind him because he felt that was helping someone today. Suddenly he felt Isaac glare at him from the other side of the classroom and with that the school bell rang and ended the period.
“Well then meet me at the old drive in outside of town at four.” Earl said as he walked off towards the back of the room. Finn woke up, with adrenaline running through his blood from the bell and looked up at Isaac who was still smiling at him. Finn could tell the second he walked out of the room…
“So then going on a date?” Isaac said with that strangely familiar smirk on his face and that look of superiority that made Finn want to horribly punch him in the face while kicking him in the balls. Finn rolled his eyes as he walked to his locker in the hall, Isaac following him and taunting him.
“No, I’m not going on a date; I’m going on a relaxing excursion out to the desert in order to look for treasure and shiny stuff.” Finn said as he opened his locker up and placed his book inside of it. Isaac still had the same stupid look on his face and he so wanted to kiss and punch it away.
“Still the same thing, going out alone with him; you two are going to be in the hot sun and maybe then you get a little sweaty and take off your shirt and then he rubs his hand against your chest and then you fumble down the sand hill because you can’t look behind you.” Isaac said as he shut Finn’s locker, the shark barely pulling his hands out from between the two metals.
“Wow, you really are pissed off at me; by the way Michelle’s house was a mile away how did you follow me?” Finn asked as he walked down the hallway, he needed to get to the last class. Still Isaac followed him as they walked down the hall towards his last class.
“Well you know perception filter tricks, let’s just say some people might have seen a falling passenger plan that disappeared between houses; so you’ll hear about it at seven o’clock on the news.” Isaac said as Finn decided to get away from the cyborg shark.
…
“So then what do you think of this one?” Iren said as she held up a suit, blue and lined with diamonds. Ross nodded at her as he closed his eyes and looked at the other nicer blacker suits. Michelle meanwhile was looking at the camo lined suits and somehow despite being the second gayest man in Carson City, he was somehow surrounded by the two women that had the least sense for fashion.
“Well it is better than the completely embroidered with diamonds.” Ross said as he wondered if he might save himself some embarrassment if he were to just freeze up this moment and let Iren carry him home. No, he told himself she still find a way to fit a jacket suit on him.
“Well then I think we should look at the blue and white suits.” Iren said as she pointed to the last section they hadn’t explored yet, and he found out why that section was completely bare of people but filled with suits, is was a massive fashion disaster. And maybe it was then that Ross believed he should have went home or maybe then he should have not told Iren.
“Are you sure we can’t go to the normal suits and stuff?” Ross asked, tugging on her arms and trying to pull her away from the horrible suits.
“BANG!” And then suddenly there was an explosion through the mall, perhaps on intuition Ross and Iren ran out of the second story store and looked out for whoever fired their weapon. Michelle followed; she had that look on her face.
“Now then don’t worry, only a simple plasma discharge no one would have been hurt but as many thought there was going to be an attack, let me tell you about who are your protectors.” Below was a man that standing on a crate and standing as a crowd of people gathered around him. The crowd looked eternally pissed and they looked more like they wanted to rip his head off then listen to him.
“Now than before you perform a mutiny or whatever you kids do these days allow me to explain myself, I am General Thaddeus Maverick and I am commanding general of the Carson City platoon of the military. Now we have our own superhero, who is not immune to the powers of the government, and I’d like to introduce him.” The general said as he raised his hand a suddenly the glass ceiling opened up and the sound of thunder striking came from above them.
“Oh god I don’t like this, this never works out well, stay prepared; I can feel it in the air.” Iren said as she felt her orange and white skin stand on end. She looked up and suddenly a shark descended, dressed in camo gear electricity seemed had him float up in the air.
“If I may introduce Livewire, the newest addition to the Carson City Military, now unlike the Lighting Bolt that you think protects the city, this man here well he is something special. He can generate his own electricity and is well versed in the protocols and information of the government.” General Thaddeus said as the shark landed next to him and seemingly existed to be a show off.
“Oh god, no he didn’t. Michelle please don’t tell me he is trying to get Finn to comfort him, I swear if you planned this.” Iren said as suddenly the crowd turned towards her. She wasn’t sure if she was supposed to clap or say hi but then she saw Thaddeus pointing at Michelle.
“Now then welcome down this young very model of a major private.” The general said as Michelle smiled and she walked towards the escalator. The crowd clapped towards her and suddenly Iren realized she was only carpooling Michelle to a military event. She felt steam and she quickly started to clap, it was an angry clap.
“Now then this young lady has been studying to be a part of the military for years, I’ve trained both her and her father and fought with her grandfather, god bless the man. And this fine lady it going to be your protector and you should get to know her.” Thaddeus said as he took Michelle’s hand and put her up on the now crowded crate. He looked at the crowd as the newspapers and such were taking photos.
“This woman will be your protector and she will do all in her power to do so, she is the result of military training and nothing can match our training not even the Outsiders.” Thaddeus said as Iren clasped her hand and tried to keep herself from knocking the general across the floor. This man did not have the right to say such things about their program.
“Calm down Iren, take a breath; she is not going to attack us or anything so and Michelle hasn’t said anything specifically about us.” Ross whispered to her and Iren took a breath, and only grabbed to the metal and didn’t try to crush it.
“I would like to say the Outsiders are young and reckless they lack the tactile training that I received and I am the true protector of Carson City.” Ross cringed, not just from Michelle’s monotone voice but he felt the metal beam bend under him as Iren seemed flamed up in anger. He gave her a look and using her powers she returned the metal back.
“Down with the Outsiders!” One man in the crowd cheered, raising his hand and howling. The crowd started to cheer and clap, nearly every one below them was singing the praises of the military and cheering down to the Outsiders. Iren and Ross backed up as they realized it might have been a bit stupid to stay any longer.
…
“BANG!” In a clear difference, the sound that woke Finn up again was not an alarm but a Rifle shot. Looking forward, he watched as his bullet stuck a can and was knocked off the wooden stand it sat on. It didn’t seem like it would be fun and when Earl suggested that they take a few shots at the desert landscape he was a bit apprehensive.
But feeling the power of the weapon under his arms and secretly managing to manipulate the bullet with the same method he used to float the spoon, he hit the can off and imagining the can as Isaac’s legs, he got a little bit of steam off.
“Good shot I wouldn’t imagine you, a city crawler would be very good at taking aim, but good one.” Earl said as he walked over and placed another can on the wood stand. This time Finn took aim and felt the wind, just taking aim and trying to be an expert marksmen felt fine.
“Now then can you make this shot, I’d like to see you do this.” Earl said as he walked away and stood up on the sand dune. He smiled and gave a thumbs up to Finn as he took aim. He acted slow and took his time as he felt the wind blowing over the sand, the gravity the bullet would feel and his gut feelings.
He waited a few seconds and confirmed his gut feeling, with that he placed his finger over the trigger and took a breath. He imagined Owlman at the ends of his sights and he wondered if he’d be able to pull the trigger if that opportunity opened up.
But in the end he took a final breath and looking down sights, adjusted for that as he held in his breath and with that he fired. Earl clapped for him as he went down and saw the can shot right in the middle, going through both of the aluminium walls.
“Oh look at this, you gonna be one of them master marksmen one day, I can just tell it; we need to invite your Michelle friend over her and see how she does up against you.” Earl said as he walked over to Finn, ignoring the fact that gun was still raised and pointed close to him. “Now then you’ve had the sourpuss face on all day, I’ve invited so maybe you’d feel better but I can’t help you if you won’t tell me what’s wrong.”
And their he went again; Earl seemed to be obsessed with helping other people like he was a philanthropist.
“Well you know sometimes big things are coming up.” Finn said as he put the weapon down and took a breath.
“Oh like those SAT tests, I would take them but my dad always said that they were a waste of time and money I could give helping people. Well he only said my time and money, I kind of add helping people to whatever I do.” Earl said with no joke; that made Finn smile. If anything there were still awesome people in the world.
“Yeah like that.” Finn looked away for a second and at the ground, but he was sure that even Earl couldn’t know. “I just feel like people are expecting me to know things or to do things I’m not sure I know how to do.”
“Well I believe in this thing called Karma and if you do good or more importantly blissfully believe you are doing good then good things will come for you.” Earl said as he smiled and that was all that Finn needed to know, he smiled at Earl that was something awfully smart of him to say.
…
As the Sun set on Carson City everything planned out to be a normal night, Isaac laid back on the comfy chair and looked up at the supercomputer as he wondered where Finn had gotten too and just waited for Michelle and Ross to return from patrol then he could close this popsicle stand and go to sleep as always. And then just as he was about to close his eyes, a massive red light combined with an alarm woke him from his peace.
“OH GOD!” Isaac said as he fell backwards, putting his hand out he saved himself from falling and quickly readjusted himself back onto the nice and stable flat ground. Looking up at the interrupting supercomputer there was an event happening, the screen flashed read and he was instructed to quickly get the Outsiders to the Capital Building. Probably for one of the governor’s pity parties. Still Isaac touched down on the edge of his watch and sent the emergency signal.
…
And with that Isaac parked his car in the alley facing the old building and walked forward, passing between the rows of trees and going down the sidewalk he looked left and right as he tried to figure out who or what he was exactly needed for. Behind him he saw Iren parking and Michelle and Ross where probably on their way.
And then a light was shined on his face, in the darkness suddenly from the sewer grates below him a yellow light shined up at him. Looking down below the metal bars, yellow glowing liquid flowed in the tunnels heading towards the Capital Building.
“Oh this cannot be good.” Isaac said as he ran forward, if this had to do with say the Owlman from two nights before then they might have been over their heads in this goop. Isaac ran into the door and pushed it open, he stopped and listened, the building was covered in marble, unfortunately for the governor but lucky for him, he might hear anything that wasn’t behind a locked door.
And then he heard the sound of groaning and moaning, it sounded strange and horrid. His back shook and walking along the marble tiled floor, arrived at the stairway adjacent to the portraits of all the previous governors. He grabbed a flash light and found the light switch, and turned it on.
And as the building seemingly woke up, Isaac finally saw what they were dealing with. In front of him along the stairs were four blobs of seemingly nothingness, they were like globs of jello with eyes but they had the strangest colored skin. All of them were base yellow but they each had their own unique color stripe over their body.
“So then what are we dealing with, sweet Jesus man.” Iren said as she walked into the building and joined Isaac in looking in confusion. She walked forward attempting to meet with them but Isaac held her back. He needed to gather more information about these things.
Raising his hand up, he adjusted the gravity in front of him and blobs took the forms of complete spheres as they simply just floated around in the zero gee environment. Isaac attempted to pull two together but even as they touched they didn’t mix, only if his play-doh was so lucky.
“Isaac are those clothes under them!” Iren said as she pointed out the four sets of cloth, corresponding with four blobs floating in the air. Isaac took a look and nodded placing the blobs down on the ground. He looked at them and wondered if he had to fight them.
“So should we fight them are they enemies?” Isaac asked, normally he rushed into situation like this but in this case they seemed peaceful and benign. Isaac deactivated his powers and walked forward slowly, his mechanical joints grinding against each other as he walked up the stairs.
And then as he approached one he wondered if it would be like a dog or such, he extended his hand and the blob jumped forward. Isaac thought like a dog it would start licking him but then the blob started to prod at him and he felt more dangerous things attempt to blast through his skin.
“Enemy it’s an enemy its attempt to break my leg skin open!” Isaac said as he attempted to wiggle his hand out and create an area of log enough gravity. Iren walked forward and placed her hand out, and then the glob was knocked back and seemingly split into a million pieces.
“Well then they seem to be highly deconstructive, good for us.” Isaac said as he stood up and looked at the tiny pieces of blob all over the place, he looked around and all the pieces rolled out the door and probably back towards the sewer. Iren looked at Isaac with confusion, wondering what she had just seen and Isaac raised his shoulders in confusion too.
Iren walked up the steps making her way towards the next one putting her hand forward she attempted to blast it but as it hit its skin this time there was a slightly reflective layer of energy blocking her attack.
“Wait how can they resist my attacks, the last one just got blown up by it?” Iren asked as she put her hand back up just in case. Isaac looked at it and grabbed a metallic rod from him pocket. Extending it out into a five foot pole he extended it forward as well.
“Well let’s see what happens if I give it a gentle love tap.” Isaac slammed the pole down and instead of being blocked the pole simply passed through and blob like a self-destruct sequence split up into a million pieces all of them running off the side of the stairwell. “Now let’s try that again.”
Isaac walked up a step and looked at Iren who he was making sure was going to pay attention to his little demonstration. He slammed the pole down into the pile of goo’s head again and this time another shield was raised. He smiled and he got the result he was looking for.
“Now then, one time I kill it in a unique way it doesn’t know how to compensate, but when someone else sees it they can find a way to adapt. In both cases forming a shield of energy, so then the question is what if you fire two blasts of your magic energy?” Isaac asked as he let Iren take the lead of the team again.
“God where in hell is Finn? We still might need one more method to kill them uniquely.” Isaac said to himself as he wondered if Iren would be able to make three blasts in a row or even if one could adapt to be straight up impervious to Iren’s attack.
Iren blasted the third to pieces and lastly she then set her eyes on the fourth and final glob. The tiger raised her hand and fired again, this time even as forth blasts of energy this time it seemingly absorbed her energy.
“Well then looks like we need a new method.” Isaac said as he looked around for a solution. The shark could grab a pole from the stairwell and slam it in the blobs head or he could attempt to cull it away and trap it for scientific purposes. And then suddenly from its side, it was exploded into a million pieces and looking over Michelle and Ross stood in the door way.
“Hey come on that was my kill.” Isaac whined as he looked at the Outsiders standing in the door. Michelle looked at Iren and she shot over a glare. Isaac swore in that second that a strike of electricity flew between them. Isaac pushed them out of the way and ran down the stairs, carrying a vial that he held at all times.
He put it on the ground and collected a bit of the fluid from the exploded blobs of strange liquid. He capped it and the tiny blobs collected into a glowing yellow fluid. Isaac spun it around and looked at Michelle and Iren, something was happening between them but all in all he knew that they were in for an awkward car ride home.
…
Isaac walked into the garage and looked at his sample, as he held it up it glowed and in the corner of the garage, the mouse suddenly started to run around his cage seeming going berserk. He walked forward and the mouse specifically jumped up on the cage and faced him seemingly begging for the liquid in the vial.
“Huh, you want this little guy.” Isaac said as he uncapped the vial and decided to give it a little of the liquid for science. He poured it between the cage, but instead of the liquid passing into the newspaper he laid out, it flew towards the mouse with a magnetic attraction.
Isaac’s eyes widen as suddenly the mouse exploded, it was similar to the blobs but instead of going into a million pieces it turned into the liquid. The two yellow colored liquids collected together and formed on larger collection. Isaac backed up and turned the cameras on the base towards the mouse.
“Oh this is valuable science I need this.” Isaac said as he started to record and as the liquids combined, they formed one massive blob and then even more surprising, they turned back into a mouse. Isaac’s eyes glowed and he knew that he needed to do some more experiments.
…
Finn snuck into his house and climbed up through his window, he pushed the perception filter on his counter and turned off the sleeping Finn that would have fooled his parents. He laughed and wondered how much his parents would freak out if they found out how many devices his father really created.
He turned on the brain wave monitor and pushed down the alarm clock, two spheres connected with a spring. The clock which his father created would control his sleep and make sure he woke up perfectly in the morning. Of course that was exempt from strange feelings.
The shark pulled off his blankets and the sheets were pulled to perfect tightness buy a series of microscopic motors underneath his bed. His father made them and he applied them, but they also used them in watches and their doors. Finn laid down in his bed and started to relax, he would have five minutes or so until the alarm clock started his sleep.
Closing his eyes, he wondered maybe with people like his father and Isaac, even Iren and maybe Michelle, they could face the threat of the strange Owlman. It might be hard but they had dealt with worse and this was their moment; this was their chance to prove themselves and Finn started to feel relaxed.
Smiling, Finn fell asleep and at eleven most of Carson City was asleep, nearly everyone awaiting the rising of the sun the next day; but maybe they wouldn’t sleep with as much comfort as they did if they knew the full extent of the conspiracy happening underneath their heads and over their eyes, all lead by one man, who would make himself be known.
