The second part:

The woman did as she said. It took around 3 and a bit weeks for her to leave. The entire time she was with Ben. I understand why he likes her. I don't like that. I don't want to like her. I don't want him to like her. Every time that she made Ben laugh it made me angry. So angry. I had to control it. For Ben. I only did it for him. He better appreciate it. Still, I have to plan for if they attack. Like when they stole Ben. If anyone does that again I swear I will kill them. Even if Ben says no. That, is a promise.

“Yes, I will tell the others.' Sam walks off. So loyal. Impressive actually. I hope the others other follow him. He will make a great military commander. I better discuss that with Ben though. I'm sure he'll agree. 'What's the plan? Can I actually get involved? I'm so bored.' I turn around. Ben is standing there in his new “cold weather" outfit. Wow. Looks good. Suits him perfectly. He notices that I'm blushing. I really need to control that. 'See something you like.' He shakes his head. 'I knew you would like it.' He winks. It's weird. He's getting really flirty lately. It's kind of weird- not that I don't like it. I do. It's just that it's more than usual. There must be something provoking it. The other apes have definitely noticed. They seem fine with it. Some of them wished that they had someone like him. I can trust Ben not to cheat on me. I know I can. He never has and never will. 'So do you like it or not?' I shake my head. 'How could I not? You look good in literally anything.' He smiles. 'So, can I join you?' I nod. We have sent scouts to a major city. They haven't returned. I'm too scared to tell Ben. I don't think he could handle any more drama. 'So, what's the mission? Anything exciting?' The look of excitement filled his face. 'Nah, nothing exciting. Just the usual.' He looked disappointed. 'Jake, the scouts are back'. I quickly shake my head. 'You were meant to tell me when Ben wasn't around.' Great. I guess now Ben knows. 'You sent scouts? Where?' If betrayal was an emotion, it would be taking over Ben. I sighed. I was going to tell him. I just kept getting- distracted. It would of happened if that stupid woman wasn't here. Great. I have to be a bad guy. I'm not meant to be one. It's meant to stay the humans job. 'Sorry, I just got distracted. I was going to tell you. Kat, got in the way. Like she always did.' Disappointment now turned into anger. 'So now it's Kat's fault?' He scowled. I shook my head. 'No, it's my fault. All mine. I should of told you.' The anger disappeared. 'I know. You are just trying to protect me.' I smiled. I glad he is forgiving. 'I'm sorry, it's just- I love you too much to cause you more pain then you need.' He gasped. 'You- haven't.' I shook my head. Now I'm just as confused as him. 'You've never said that. That word.' It's true. I've never said it. Only because I find it a “human" word. 'So? Does it matter?' I questioned him. Apparently it did matter. 'I love you too.' The word was inhuman to say. I never thought I would say it. Guess I was wrong. I don't like being wrong. The only thing I could think of to help this situation was to hug him. I gesture for him to hug me. He leaps over and hugs me. Wow, so strong. For a human. I hug him just as hard. I hear a cough. 'Sorry, I was just lost control.' He grabs my hand. He places it on his chest. 'It okay. It's all okay.' Why can't other humans be like him? If they were there would be no- I wouldn't exist. He found someone just like him. He wouldn't of saved me. I can't stop the sadness from controlling my face. He notices. 'What? What's wrong?' I shake my head. 'Nothing. I'm just being stupid. I'm fine' at least I can keep some secrets. 'On to your original question then? So, there is nothing worth joining in on. Trust me. It's just some mundane staff. Nothing important anyway'.

'Good night.' I say as I lay down. He's already asleep. I can hear him breathing. We really need to improve this shelter. The occasional gust if wind is quite annoying. A rustle outside of the shelter. The ape that rudely interpreted cams into the shelter. 'The scouts, they have found a another military base.' I tried not to gasp. 'What? How? Great another.' Wait, I'm tied. 'Can you like leave? This Ben and I's private shelter.' I made sure to put extra emphasis on the “private' part. Since, it has been ignored in the past many times. It's stupid. Why can't they respect privacy? 'Well, talk about this in the morning'. He nods and leaves.

'So you tell them what to do and I will stay here. I'm going to pretend I don't know. I'm going to say it's like some sort of rebellion.' Sam nods and walks away. He doesn't say much. It's kind of suspicious. I'll let it slide for now. I don't have the time to focus on the “maybe" things. I hear Ben behind me. I nod at Sam. 'I'm going to do it like it or not. You can come if you want. Im still going without you. Bye!' He walks off. Some of the other apes follow. 'What was that about?' Be says confused. 'Sam found out about some apes stuck in a military base. He's going to save them.' He shakes his head. 'Great, what happens now? What happens if we need them?' I shake my head as well. 'I honestly don't know. We'll be find.' He grasps my hand. I hold on tightly. At least we have the some orangutangs and gorillas. Well, “some" maybe a bit generous.

'Oaky, it's officially boring without everyone.' I nod. It like there is no one left. The orangutangs are doing their own things. They really don't like to be social sometimes. The gorillas on the other hand, they are just eating and talking to each other. There is probably about 10-14 of us here. The rest are raiding the military base. They aren't going to be back for a few days. It takes about one and half days to get there. I hope they are safe. I have zero information about the base. At least they have weapons that we stole from the other base. Ben and I are just sitting on this log that we found. It's actually quite comfortable. 'I know what's happening' there is silence. 'How? Who told you?'. 'Sam told me. He unlike you, doesn't lie. Well, he doesn't exactly care about my feelings.' I look into his eyes. 'One thing I can tell you is that he doesn't like you. Or any humans.' I understand, I don't like the humans either. All they wanted from me is to experiment on me. It took years for Ben to save me. Years of torture. The only “good" moments were when I was with him. He's the only reason I could take it all. 'It's so peaceful. I really like it here. The village, it looks nice.' He grabs my hand. 'I hope it's stays like this forever. You and I, I mean.' I do as well. He's the single most important person in my life. 'I have to agree with you on that. It's almost perfect.' He looks at me puzzled. 'How is it not perfect?'. I shake my head. 'Only my painful memories stop it from being perfect. Other than that it's perfect. You, are perfect.' I start to blush. He blushes as well. 'I hope we are together forever' I mean it. Nothing is better.

These few days were peaceful. Everyone being at rest. There was no fighting, no interruptions. It was an idealistic village. But, of course this couldn't last forever. A few days later the apes returned. Most, unhurt, some had a few injuries. These would heal in time. The mental pain however, would take longer. They won the battle, but we still haven't won the war.

'We should let them rest. I know that we need to know what happened but they need to rest.' I nod. Ben is really caring of the others. It's the reason why they accept him. 'Let's go to bed. There's nothing that is important at the moment. They are fine.' Ben and I walk to our shelter. I hear a slight rustle in the shelter. Great, I thought I told it not to talk to us at night. I open the shelter door. I drop my jaw. Huddled in the corner there is a baby monkey. Just then a orangutang walks in. 'Sorry, this one is still upset. He doesn't like this place. It's scaring him.' He walks closer to me. 'He lost his family from the humans.' I look at the poor guy. So scared. Ben slowly walks up to him. 'Hey little guy. What ya doing here?' The monkey, too young to speak simply just rushes over to Ben and hugs him. I'm paralysed. I see Ben hugging him back. That's too cute. He thinks Ben is his father. Wait, why isn't he scared? Well, I understand why he would go to Ben. That's not it though he's too young. 'He can stay with us.' The orangutang nods and leaves. 'What should we call him?' Wait? We are naming him? Wow, that's interesting. 'I'm thinking of adopting him. If that's okay with you?' I smile. I have had no experience with kids so this will be interesting. Ben and I lay down. The monkey just wanders around the shelter trying to find somewhere comfortable. He eventually walks up to where Ben is going to sleep and lays on top of him. I guess I'm not going to be the heated blanket tonight. 'Charlie. We'll call him Charlie. Is it okay? I named him after my father.' I shuffle closer. 'It's perfect.' I close my eyes. Charlie spreads out over both of us. I guess I'll have get used to being a father. It's nice.

'Just going to say now monkey babies are completely different than human babies.' I don't know. I've never seen a baby human. I wonder what they look like. 'I'm sorry, I have to tell qyou something' He sounds serious. 'Jake, I'm sorry, but he's cuter than you.' What? Seriously? Well, I guess he is. 'I guess I have competition.' We both laugh.

———

When Kat said “regeneration properties" I had no clue what see meant. It turned out they were important. Really, important. You will not understand, no one does. Well, they understand the science, but they can't seem to “completely replicate" it. There have been many attempts. All, failed. Only Ben knows. Only he can help. He simply refuses. It's been 20 years since we adapted Charlie. 20, of the most- important years. The humans only took 3 years to find a cure. Like that we help them. No science can help. We are above their science.

'Jake! Is today the day?' The monkey quickly runs over to the kitchen. 'Hell yes! It's the day!' I remain calm. I'm excited. I can't believe it's going to happen. Well, maybe. 'Remember, it's only a chance, you know that right?' The words didn't not change his face. 'I know it will happen, it's dad for God's sake! He can easily convince them'. He runs up to me and hugs me. He's just like his father. 'Please, calm down, I don't want to get into trouble again.' That, changed his face. 'Sure, can we watch tv? I find the human shows weird.' I nod. As long as quiet it will be fine. A few hours later Ben is back. He opens the door. He is ecstatic. He just walks up to me hugs me. 'I did it, we are now officially part of human society.' This is fantastic. I can finally get out of this apartment. My mind wanders to what other apes are going to do. I'm sure their fine. Doubt sinks in. 'They will be fine, trust me.' I let go. I know it will be fine. For me. Most importantly, Charlie. 'Hey Charlie! How's it going my buddy!' He rushes over to Ben and hugs him. This is why it's worth it. For the family. The humans can judge, I don't care. It's too good to be spoiled. 'Hey, do you mind helping me with the groceries?' Charlie nods. He walks down the corridor and out of sight. 'We can finally be a proper family, you know that. Right, Jake?' of course I know it. I've always wanted this. 'what about the humans? They'll judge us.' he clearly doesn't care. He just completely ignores me. 'I have completed all that I wanted. I have done it for you and all of the apes.' he's right. He's always right.

Ever since then we have been a family. A complete family. But, all good things come to an end. That's just how the world works. As time progressed the virus got more powerful. The humans tried to counter, but, to no avail. Around 50% of the population was wiped out in a matter of weeks. They tried so hard to stop it. They simply couldn't contain it. They stole apes off the street and from their homes and experimented on them. Ben and I saved as many as we could, but some died due to the humans not wanting us to save them. It's disgusting what they did to the apes. It turns out that you cannot make a vaccine because they virus mutated too rapidly. He suffered greatly. So greatly, that he almost died. We eventually retreated into the forest. We couldn't take the pain and suffering of finding the apes that the humans have killed. The virus made it so that our bodies didn't age. We simply couldn't age. No matter how much we wanted. Cursed with eternal youth. We were hidden from the rest of the world. We had no means of communication. Nor did we want to. Our duty was to protect each other. We remained hidden for a hundred years. Until now.

A group of humans entered into the clearing. The gorilla beside me turned. 'What are we going to do? Humans aren't allowed on sacred ground. Should we ambush them? I can do it' I shook my head. 'We need to see what they are up to. They know that we're here. So they might have backup.' He nods. We watch them for about an hour. They don't talk much. The humans acted as though that they didn't like each other. That they were here by force. I jumped. Ambush the ambushers. 'Tell they other, be on alert. There might be an ambush.' Ho nods and slowly and quietly he lumbers away. I hear a noise. 'I got this. The might not know who I am. I could try to convince them that you apes aren't here.' I cringe. I'm not going to risk him like that. We might not be able to age, but we can most certainly die. 'No. Stay here.' It's too late. Ben wanders straight toward the humans. The humans are startled. 'It's okay, I'm human! Look! See, I'm fine.' The humans shuffle slowly towards him. 'Are you alone?' A woman walks forward away from the main group. 'Yes, I've been here alone. For years actually.' A kid in the group seems overly scared. 'Don't go closer! He's The Inventor!' There is a rouse of movement. They slowly walk away. The woman, on the other hand walks up to Ben. 'Don't mind them, they don't know you like I do.' What? I've heard that voice before. So long ago. I think hard. Kat? It can't be. She would be 130 years old. That's no possible. Wait, Ben. Why? Why did he do it? The anger takes over my body and I run straight to Ben. 'What did you do?! Why did you save her?!' I scream at the top of my lungs. The humans begin to scream. 'Jake! Wait!' The anger is too strong. I grab Kat by the throat. 'What did you do to him! I know he hated you. Why did he save you!' She struggles against my grip. She passes out. I hear a click. Then it all goes black.

'Did you really have to do that?' I had a voice say. Ben. 'He was dangerous, he almost killed me. I'm sorry, I had to.' A female voice says. Kat. Why can't I move? My body feels like I was hit by a massive boulder. I hear them continue to talk. It too painful to move. What ever Kat did, it hurts. 'Jake, you are awake. Sorry, about that. Kat got carried away.' I can feel my strength slowly returning. 'Where are the other humans? Wait, no, why aren't you dead. The other apes surprisingly haven't killed you.' They should of been there. They knew. Why wasn't I notified? I'm the freaking leader! Damn, I thought I could trust them. Sam. He must of- I'm going to get him. I'm going to- 'stay calm, you'll get your strength back.' She says like she actually cares. I doubt that. She wants something. That's only thing she has wanted in the past. 'So, onto the reason why I'm here. I'm only hear because I need something.' Of course. I knew it. 'I need you to come back, Ben and Jake.' What? Why would we need to go back. We've been fine here for years. 'The humans, we have so many problems, we are in desperate need of help. Please, I beg of you.' Sincerity, the one thing that gets me. Agh, why do I have to be the good guy. I almost like being the bad guy. 'We- I need you to show that peace can we achieved.' Peace, the only thing I've had around here. I don't understand, we haven't even gone near the humans on years. They probably just don't like that we are monitoring them. 'Fine, we will discuss it. Privately.'

In the end Ben convinced me to go. Apparently, if I do this I will “impress our son of your abilities" damn, I need to stop doing everything that he says. I'm only doing it for Ben and Charlie. I'm not doing it for Kat. Or peace for that matter. Considering we aren't even involved with the humans. The other apes think I should go. They almost have sympathy for the humans. Only because they don't know Kat properly. Not like me. Definitely, not Ben.

'Charlie, while we are gone you are in charge. Don't do anything stupid. Protect the village.' He nods. He understands that I have to go. I secretly ordered my best to keep an eye on things. Just in the background. To make sure that Charlie is okay. A few hours later we made camp. Along the way we talk. Just about general things. Nothing important. For some reason Kat doesn't talk about the other humans. I sense a trap of some kind. After a few days we arrive. When she said they needed help this isn't how bad I thought things were. Aside from the obvious destruction, there was only sadness. Bodies were all over the place. Some living, most dead. I could see obvious conflicting information about their death. Bullets, open wounds, sickness. 'You really need to mange your people batter.' She shook her head. 'My people didn't do this, well, most of it.' We stood there in silence, puzzled. 'Then who did?' I ask. It's doesn't make sense. Our people don't even know about this place. 'You caused this, your people.' Anger arose. 'Don't lie! That's impossible! I know where everyone of all of my people are at all times.' She shook her head. 'I didn't mean your tribe.' What? That means there are other apes out there. I thought they were all gone. 'All of the apes were captured, you know that' Ben says just as angry as me. 'That was the plan. We were all wrong.' With super regeneration, they could raid and recover in a few days. They would be almost unstoppable. 'Send your scouts.' I know that sounds obvious, but I'm not sure how human society works. Well, in this age anyway. 'We did, until they stopped coming back.' She said with sadness in her eyes. 'Do they leave any clues? Maybe a mark or something?' When we raided humans in the past that's what the apes wanted to do. To show that we are better then them. 'From what we know, they are a rogue group. They mark their “kills" we some sort of weird “s".' Hmm. I've never know any of our people to do that. Unless. He's dead. That's impossible. The thought leaves my mind. 'I'm sorry, but we can't help. The only thing we can do is question our people.' I don't want to put our effort into saving a people that tried many times to destroy us. 'I'm sorry, we have to leave. There is nothing we can do.' A tear formed in her eye. I'm not sympathetic. Her people tried to kill me. They also captured and forced Ben to work on a cure that he didn't want to do. Too many reasons.

They all shook their heads. There was silence in the village. None of them knew. They know better than to lie to their kings. The punishment of this is death. 'Back to work then, please.' I really need to get better with this “niceness". Apparently, according to Ben it makes them respect me more. 'We can trust them. I can.' Ben says to me confidently. I have to agree with it.

News spreads of a group of apes making their way to camp. They want to truce with us. They just want shelter. Yet, for some reason they don't have any type of boss. They seem to function as one big group. It's impressive, I'll give them that. 'I am an ambassador for our tribe.' A chimp says. 'Who is your leader? I wish to speak with you leader.' He shakes his head. 'He is currently unavailable.' He says. 'Fine, you can stay here. Except, you have to follow our rules.' He walks back to the others and quietly whispers. After a few minutes he returns. 'It is agreed.' We shake hands.

For the next few months it was good. There was an occasional fight here and there. Not much actually. Until the day when the military arrived. It seemed that they never forgot us. They technology was interesting. Very advanced. Someone must of helped them. 'Dr Benjamin Smrith. You are wanted by my higher officer.' Is he serious? I look at Ben. He looks interested. He can't be serious! No, don't you dare- 'Yes, I'm listening. What do you want me for.' The man in uniform stepped closer. 'We require your services. We need your experience.' Ben shook his head. Good. Don't do it. It's going to be a trap. 'In exchange for you service, we will reward your village with defence and technology.' He said. 'Why would I help you? What technology are we talking?' The officer took out a small looking metal object. 'This, is mutatiym. It has the ability to mimic anything that you want.' Okay, they have improved. So many things we could use that for. 'This defence, you speak of. Why? We don't need your defence.' The officer laughs. 'A threat has arisen. Project A is now active.' What on earth is he talking about? Ben takes a deep breath. The look of worry is on his face. 'I'll do it.'

'Jake, I have to go. It's matter of life and death, for us.' He is frantic to collect his things. 'Explain! I need to understand!' I say desperately. 'Project A is alien defence protocol. We are under attack.' I shake my head. This isn't a movie. It can't be real. It must be a trap. 'Jake, I love you. You know that?' His sadness was showing. 'Yes, you've told me thousands of times.' He runs up to me and hugs me. Like he saying goodbye. 'You know they said I can come' I say trying not to laugh. He blushed. 'Oh, sorry, I didn't know.' I shake my head. I love him, even with his stupidity. He realises what I'm thinking and let's go. 'I didn't say stop.' I blush this time. He hugs me again. This time, a “I'm sorry for what I've done" hug. The officer walks in. He sees what we are doing and coughs. 'So it's true. You have a “relationship" interesting. Anyway, we need to leave. 'It's more than that.' The officer scoffs. 'And guess what? I have more sex than you!' I say with anger. Ben blushes. 'Let's get moving. I don't want to listen to anymore of this.' He walks out of the shelter. 'Don't make him jealous, please.' Ben winks and follows the soldier out.

'Ooh, nice wheels.' Ben laughs. The vehicle doesn't even have wheels. It just hovers. 'This baby is twice as fast it's wheeled cousin.' A soldier says. Great, now I have to deal with this “technology talk" for the whole trip. The trip is over in a matter of hours. So much faster than walking. The entire trip was “ooh, look at this fancy piece of metal, look at this technology" it tore my brain apart. I eventually just fell asleep. Thank The Virus. We arrive at this metal looking structure. It's like some sort of fortress. The gate is something that you would see on a medieval castle. The gate opens without a sound. We enter the courtyard. It is a massive yard filled with soldiers. There is probably about 300 of them. A small army. In the middle of the yard there is this massive metal structure with a door. Only big enough to fit one person through at a time. 'See that? That is our salvation.' There is a metal inscription on it. “Through this door is your salvation". I wonder what's inside. 'Even though we are at the end, there is hope. Of a new beginning.' A man standing on a stage declares. We walk up to a place in front of him. 'This, is the start of glory. For us. Only we deserve this. The others have not accepted our ways. So they will perish, where we go into the light! We will win this war.' He says confidently. Wow, these humans think they are all powerful. They can't be serious? I look around at the cheering crowd. My eyes stop at Ben. He seems interested. Not at the humans, but at what they have made. I am as well. I get lost in the emotion of Ben. 'You okay? You seem a little..sick.' He says with concern. I feel weird. This human speech is damaging my brain into mush. Egh, I hate speeches.

'I'll just sleep here then. Alone' I say trying to get Ben to get the hint. He winks. 'Sorry, but I need to see how this- thing works. I'll be back later.' He says with slight disappointment. I guess science is more interesting than me. What does science have that I don't? I guess it's because science allows for infinite possibilities I guess. 'Can I at least have a book or something?' I say with a hint of impatience.

Wow, humans are creative creatures, I'll give them that. This book is actually quite good. 'Guess who just figured out what the humans are doing?!' Ben shouts with enthusiasm. 'I don't know, a teleportation device?' I say with sarcasm. 'Your half right! Well, not sure actually.' How could he be not sure? Either I'm right or wrong. Simply. 'Time machine.' He says with absolute ecstasy in his voice. 'Seriously? How did they manage that? Weren't they a broken society?' I say confused. 'It turns out the plans that they stole from me years ago is coming back to haunt me.' He says scared. 'They shouldn't be allowed to have that power. It was meant me us. You-me-Charlie.' He says worried. 'We need to get back. Let's just say they should only use it once.' He says confidently. 'We will go in the morning, before they use it. I pretended that I couldn't understand it.' He laughed. 'Finish what I suggested before?' I wink at him. 'How could I say no to you.' He winks back.

'It's going to happen anytime soon. Just be patient.' Ironically he says that worried. Five minutes later there is a huge explosion. Ben stops dead. 'Kat, I..' He looks like he's going to faint. He sits down slowly. 'I forgot to tell her. I was too tied up with you.' He says with sadness in his voice. I bend down to his level. 'It's okay.' His head falls onto my lap. 'I forgot to tell you something, she was one that first trip.' His face lights up. 'The first trip was safe right?' I say trying to help. 'Yes, it was safe.' The awkwardness of the situation gets to me. 'Since it's fine, want to continue?' I say. 'Yes, this place is too hot.' He says trying to convince me. In honestly he just wants to go back home. I do as well, the humans are a boring race. 'I didn't care about anyone else. Kat and you were the only people there that should honestly survive this.' He looks at me in the eyes. I look into his. I know the truth. He never lies. His eyes never lie.

'Your father just wiped out a whole military outpost.' I say to Charlie. Charlie looks into Ben's eyes expecting me to lie. 'I always knew you had an explosive personality.' Charlie says trying not to laugh. Wow, that's so bad. 'Sorry, I had to do that. With the explosion and all.' Wait how did he know? I look at him in the eyes. 'It's okay, I only sent the once scout. I'm not stupid enough to abandon the village.' He says disappointed in me. 'I know I could trust you.' Ben interrupts. 'I could never be disappointed in you.' I say trying to repair the situation. 'Tomorrow we should send a recovery group. The explosion was designed to only wipe out living organisms. It's safe to return. There is valuable technology there that we need to recover.' Ben says confidently with his efforts.

The sound of crickets and other night insects is trying to lull me to sleep. The fires viciously crackles in the distance. 'The humans have traveled into the future because they don't believe we can flourish without them. They think we will cause our own destruction.' Ben says trying not to laugh. 'They are going to find the opposite. We we'll be much greater than them. The course was set to 500 years into the future. We'll be waiting.' Ben says enthusiastically. We just have to do a better job than them. We will be ready. Ben falls asleep on top of me.

A few weeks of transportation, and all of the technology has been moved. The village surrounds the pile. They begin to chatter about what each piece does. Ben surveys the piles. 'Everything we need. Wow, we have that!' He points to a stack of paper drawings.

For the next year and a half we assemble everything back. Everything from a flash light to a tractor. All of humans inventions are pulled apart, studied, and reconstructed. We will prepare for the oncoming storm. We expect the other military bases to attack. They did, not a violently as we expected. They seemed to have varying amounts of technology. Some were basic, where as some were almost as advanced as the first base we destroyed.

500 years later.

Hope you enjoyed!
