Jack Be Nimble Jack Shrink Quick

By CalexTheNeko

Jack swore as his car weaved off the side of the road. The road was slick from the rain and it was the best he could do to aim the car into an empty grass field instead of tree when one of his tires blew out. The result was that he himself was mostly unharmed in the crash… But the contents he was transporting were not. The glass vial containing the materials he was picked up from the lab shattered during the crash… And now a warm green goo was splattered across Jack’s jeans and polo shirt. Just… Absolutely lovely.

Jack growled and got out of the truck to survey the damage. It was one of the back tires that had gone out. He looked around. He was on an old country road and the rain coming down made it difficult to see. He couldn’t count on help coming anytime soon. Luckily he had a spare tire. Still being covered in the strange goo and now being pelted with rain… It was a miserable experience. Jack wished he had a change of clothes so he could get out of these; but he didn’t have too many options right now. Best he could do is hope the rain washed the goo off.

Jack busied himself getting the spare tire from the back. He tried to pry the ruined tire off… But something was wrong. He was having a difficult time turning his lug wrench to remove the hubcap. Jack was in relatively decent shape. He had changed a tire more than once in his life. He shouldn’t be struggling to do this. He tried to turn it harder though… And wound up falling backwards away from the tire. He swore again as this happened but froze as he realized something strange. His clothing was extremely loose on him. Jack’s eyes widened at this and he stood up not sure what to make of it. Then his pants fell down around his ankles. He looked around noticing his truck was bigger too! What the heck was going on! Before too long his shirt was gigantic on him. After about a minute it folded over on top of him and Jack couldn’t make out anything that was going on.

Jack was trying to process what was happening to him as he crawled around underneath his shirt. He was shrinking… And it probably had something to do with the goo he had been transporting for work. Eventually he crawled out from his shirt sleeve. He was now standing naked among blades of grass that were twice as tall as him. At least he wasn’t covered in goo anymore… But the rain was coming down hard. Giant rain drops as big as him splattered against the ground. One landed on him soaking Jack completely and knocking him down onto his stomach. He let out a gasp before quickly running underneath his truck to escape the onslaught of rain.

He must have only been an inch or so tall. It was hard to say. He shivered cold and wet while under the truck. He’d have to figure this mess out after the rain passed… Except it didn’t seem he’d have the luxury to just wait around. Something else was here… It moved through the grass as well… And then it was towering over Jack.

It was just a wild rabbit. He saw them when he was driving out here sometimes. Usually they were so skittish they’d run off as soon as they saw him. This one must have crawled underneath his truck to get out of the rain same as him. It wasn’t very shy of him now. Jack was smaller than the rabbit… And getting smaller by the second. Jack was now no bigger than an ant as the rabbit bounded for him. He was glad rabbits were herbivores… But he was worried he might get crushed beneath the giant fuzzy beast’s paws!

Out of a desperate desire to survive… Jack decided the only safe place was on top of the giant rabbit. He waited for it to hop near and dove to the side to avoid being crushed beneath its paws. Then he jumped for its hind leg and grabbed two handfuls of brown fur. He slowly began to climb his way up the rabbit towards its back. He wouldn’t have to get worried about being crushed there.

The rabbit didn’t even notice. Jack was far too small for the bunny to feel his weight. Soon he could no longer grab individual strands in each hand. Jack found himself having to wrap his arms and legs around a single strand of fur to stay in place. He could only hope he had made it to the back.

Then he looked down… And he saw something hideous. Giant bugs that looked like aliens. Each one about as big as Jack! The bunny had fleas! Jack saw the fleas hopping around… Currently as big as him… And to his horror they were getting bigger. Jack started trying to climb up the strand of hair he was clinging to on the bunny to get away. Down below he could see so many of the giant monsters gathering around. They were twice as big as him… Then five times as big. Then they were as big as buildings. Jack could no longer fit his arms around the hair he was climbing. He felt like he was clinging to the side of a rock cliff with a several mile drop behind him. Enormous monsters the size of skyscrapers awaited down there to devour him. His bare feet and hands just couldn’t cling to the hair without a proper hold though.

He fell.

Jack didn’t land among the giant fleas though. He instead landed in an alien world with new monsters. Giant transparent creatures moved around him… It was as if they were made of jelly. He looked down at them as they swarmed around his ankle realizing he was staring at microscopic organisms like amoebas… And yet just like the squirrel and fleas they were growing larger by the second. His shrinking wasn’t going to stop.

Jack ran as fast as he could trying to get away from the microbes. The jelly-like entities grew larger and larger and were soon as big as him. This made it easier to find spaces they didn’t occupy… But it made them more terrifying as they become giant blob monsters bigger than him. Jack was reminded of some old Sci-Fi movie he saw on TV where a giant block wiped out the entire city. It wasn’t long before these single cell organisms looked that big to him. He was nothing more than a tiny speck before a city sized blob. He continued to run. He continued to shrink.

This job was not worth the pay.
