Brogan sought out a witch's help for his problem with girls, only to have a dragon fall in love with him instead. Now he wants to get rid of the dragon.

Dear Meera,

I have a confession to make. Though you are beautiful, I could never see myself with a dragon.

Brogan looked at what he had written. It sounded so wrong. Meera would be offended by it. But he liked human girls, not dragons.

He stretched his arms and went on his way again. At last he spotted Yanagi's hut in the distance, having traversed through thirty miles of desert with only a half-full canteen of milk to satisfy his thirst.

He pounded on the door, though it was a few minutes before it opened the slightest crack.

"Yes?" said the voice from within.

"Your spell didn't work out quite right. I thought it would get me a girl, but instead a bunch of female dragons fell in love with me."

"Of course they did, idiot boy. That was my intention."

The door was slammed into his face.

Brogan felt miffed and insulted. He went over to a nearby window and kicked it open.

"How dare you barge into a witch's house, boy!" shouted the old woman, shaking a finger at him.

"I need you to fix the spell you cast on me. Now."

"There's no way to fix it. You're stuck with dragons loving you for the rest of your life!" the witch cackled.

"And to think I came to you for advice."

"It is foolish to think a witch would help you. Should've gone to other powers for that."

"I just wanted Samantha to be jealous."

"Well, I highly doubt any spell could've done that. Jealousy can be brewed in a potion but you'd have to convince the individual it is intended for to drink it...and if I were you, I wouldn't trust any elixir that I'd offer you, boy."

Brogan looked around the room, saw some netting nailed to the wall and a peculiar portrait of a teenage girl. Her eyes were alluring, but she wasn't Samantha.

"Do you have any dragonsbane?" he asked Yanagi.

"I can probably whip some up, but it won't solve your problem. Dragonsbane will kill your intended target, but it'll cause all the other female dragons who fell in love with you to go into heat. I doubt you'd survive the impact of one-hundred and twenty female dragons fighting over you. And that's just a low estimate."

"I mustn't have a dragon in love with me! Help me get rid of her."

"Well, there is one way..."

The witch was silent for a moment, as she stroked her chin. It nearly drove Buvair mad waiting for her to continue.

"It is possible to overwrite Meera's affection for you if you can make her fall in love with another male."

"Oh that should be simple enough. She's a fairly attractive dragon, so it should be easy to find a dragon who wants her."

"You misunderstand me," said the witch. "The spell won't allow a dragon-dragon matchmaking to end it. You've got to get her interested in another human boy."

"But...no human wants a dragon to be in love with them!"

"Some people are more open-minded than you are," said the witch. "I'm surprised at you, though. You've got a perfectly beautiful dragon infatuated with you, and you want nothing to do with her."

"Well, not exactly nothing. She's nice to be around. But that doesn't excuse the fact that she is a dragon!" Brogan said.

"Find someone who won't mind, make Meera see what an attractive match he would be, and there you have it."

"Seriously, what goofball on this planet would want a dragon to be enamored by him?"

"Just because you don't want it doesn't mean no one else does."

"Well, then, tell me how to find him."

"No, no, boy. That is your task. I can only tell you what to do, not how your goals are to be achieved precisely."

"But you cast the spell. You ought to help."

"Believe me, Brogan," said the witch. "There is not a spell I know of that can tell which people would be willing to have a dragon for a lover. Of course, there is a potion that can force them to, but that's another matter..."

"Where is it? Give some to me!" Brogan demanded.

"Foolish boy! You think I'd have some of that already brewed? And even if I did, I'd only give it to you if you drank it before my very eyes. Not that it'd be too much help even then," Yanagi said, considering. "It'd only last a few weeks before you needed to take some more, and by then you'd break Meera's poor dragon heart because I wouldn't have any means to induce you to take it again."

"Why did this have to happen to me?" Brogan asked aloud.

"Hey, better you know now what happens when you seek a witch's aid in solving you problems, instead of trying to fix it yourself."

Brogan left miserably and racked his brains for someone he could try to persuade Meera to fall in love with, who might not be so opposed to the idea. He'd love to do that to Buvair, but whenever he saw Buvair his arms were wrapped tightly around Samantha, and the last thing Brogan wanted was for Samantha to learn he had a dragon in love with him...
