The next morning, I woke up and got myself ready for school. I made my way to the bus stop and noticed something strange. Rex wasn't there to greet me; maybe he's sick or something. The bus pulled up, I got on, and it brought me to school. I walked slowly into the school thinking about that blue wolf. What did he want from me? Maybe it's not what he wants from me, but what he wants in general. Come to think of it, anyone could have been sitting where I was sitting out in the field. Anyone could have read that rock he threw over the wall. Whatever it is he wants, or he thinks he's getting from me, is nothing but a sad let down.

The first three classes dragged on like they always do. Then the bell rang indicating that it was break period 4. I packed up my stuff and made my way outside. I slowly walked over to the corner of the school yard where I always sit, wondering if he'd be throwing rocks over the wall again.

When I got there, I scanned the ground to see if I had missed any rocks, but found none with writing on them. So I sat down next to the wall and pulled out my book:

A solar flare is a sudden flash of brightness observed over the Sun's surface or the solar limb, which is interpreted as a large energy release of up to 6 - 10^25 joules of energy (about a sixth of the total energy output of the Sun each second or 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT equivalent, over 25,000 times more energy than released from the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter). They are often, but not always, followed by a c-

My reading was cut short by a thud on the ground. It was a rock with writing on it. I picked up the rock and it read: "You're a lot cuter than I thought you were going to be," with a happy face on the end of it.

So I replied, "Yeah? Well you're a lot sexier than I thought you'd be."

"I'll take that as a compliment!"

"So, why the movies?"

"Because I really want to see it. Isn't that reason enough?"

"Okay, I just thought you'd want to talk alone, in private, ILLEGALLY," I wrote with extra emphasis on the illegal part.

"It may be illegal but it sure is fun."

"So this is nothing more than a little game to you?"

"No, it's not like that. I really do want to get to know you better than just a rock over the wall..."

"Don't worry. When we go to the beach you'll have plenty of time to do so."

"I was thinking we could go back to my place and play some video games or something."

"Are you crazy? What if your parents find out about me being a cutie?"

"I don't live with my parents anymore..."

I could tell there was a lot of emotion behind this rock... He had taken 3 minutes to reply and the way he wrote each letter looked like he was reluctant to do so. Just then the bell rang, so I quickly wrote, "I have to go, we'll talk more tonight. Bye," and tossed it over the wall.

The school day ended and it was time to go home. I got on the bus and pulled out my phone; 10 new messages from Chris. I opened the first one, "REN! REX IS IN THE HOSPITAL! HE WAS WHIPPED!"

My brain took a second to adjust to what I had just read. My body started to shake and my eyes began to tear up. What a dummy; he was probably caught talking about sex. My heart ached when I opened the second one. "He was whipped 20 times! And bystanders said he was also kicked in the head... IM GOING TO KILL THAT GUARD@!!@". The rest of the messages were relatively calm; mentioning things like where he was and how he's doing. I couldn't help but cry on the bus. Rex had done nothing to deserve such a punishment. He was always so happy and cheerful; his smile could brighten even the darkest of days. It makes me sick stuff like this can happen so easily...

When I got off the bus I could see my mother waiting outside with a tissue over her face. She had heard from Rex's mother that he was in the hospital.

"Come on Ren, get in the car. I'll take you to see Rex." She said all sniffly.

"Thanks mom."

We got in the car and drove 15 minutes to Second Wind Cutie's Hospital. We parked the car and made our way into the hospital. My mother walked up to the receptionist and said "We're here to see Rex Shofeit."

"Are you direct family or friends of the patient?" The receptionist replied.

"Just friends."

"I'm sorry but only direct family is allowed to see him at this moment."

"Why can't we see him?!" I announced rather furiously.

"Unfortunately your friend has yet to wake up from his coma, so until he's awake we are only allowing direct family to see him."

Coma!? Nobody said anything about a coma! That fucking guard put my friend in a coma! I gathered myself before speaking up, "Do you know if and when he'll come out of his coma?"

"We don't know as of yet, but we'll be sure to give you a call when he does. Just leave your name and number with us."

I looked up at my mom and she stared right back at me with pity filled eyes. She was scared I'd do something irrational, but I'm better than that. I turned around and walked over to the waiting area. There were a few empty seats in the far corner of the waiting area, so I took those. I sat there waiting; waiting to see if Rex's family might happen to walk out and check the waiting room.

Time slowly dragged on, like it would with my first 3 classes of school. I waited and waited until it was 4:00 pm. Shit, I was supposed to go to the movies with my illegal friend! I can't tell my parents that, they'll kill me. And not to mention it would be incredibly inconsiderate of me to leave while my friend is potentially dying in the hospital. It was clear what I had to do; I just hope my illegal friend still talks to me after this...

A few minutes later Rex's mother walked out into the waiting room. I waved her over to where we were sitting. Her face was weary, and the fur under her eyes was soaked with tears. I stood up and before I could say anything, she spoke up.

"Rex is going to be okay."

My heart rate slowed as I finally released the air constricted in my lungs.

"Thank god," I breathed, "Am I allowed seeing him?"

"Unfortunately not, but tomorrow morning they'll be allowing visits from friends and family; 2 at a time." She said softly.

Since I can't see Rex, now might be a good opportunity to use my mother so I'm not too late for the movie. It was 4:11 pm, and the theater is a 20 minute drive from this hospital, I'll be late, but just barely.

"Hey mom, since we can't see Rex do you think you can take me to the movies? I mean, me and Rex were supposed to go see it tonight but you know... He can't now," I lied.

"Isn't that rude, hun? Maybe Rex wanted to see it with you at the same time."

"Not at all, he'd want me to go see and then come back tomorrow to tell him all about it," I lied again.

I hated using my injured friend as a crutch to do something illegal, but it was the only way. Besides, he owes me for all the times he nearly got us in trouble.

"Well, I guess so," my mother said with a smile, "call me later Carol; keep me up to date on his condition," my mother said to Rex's mother.

"Will do, enjoy the movie, Ren!" Carol said with a forced smile.

"Thanks Mrs. Shofeit."

I turned around and made my way towards the door.

"The movie starts at 4:30, mom," I announced.

"Why don't you just go see a later one then? It's not like you have a date or someone to go with."

If only she knew...

"I know... I just want to see it really bad, that's all."

"Alright, get in the car, let's go."

When we arrived at the theater, I noticed a canine like figure waiting by the flowerbed. It was him. I opened the door to the car and got out.

"Thanks mom, I'll call you when it's over."

"Okay sweetie, have fun!"

"Thanks."

I walked slowly towards the entrance of the theater until my mom was out of sight. I then turned around and walked towards my illegal friend waiting by the flowerbed. I was so close now that I could smell his deodorant, which smelled rather amazing.

"You're late, again," he said in a deep tone of voice.

"Sorry, my friend was in the hospital so I went to visit him."

"Who isn't these days..." He said depressively, "Also do you think you could not look at me? You'll create unwanted attention."

"Sorry!" I said apologetically

"It's fine, just wait right here, I'll go grab our tickets."

He turned around and walked right by me, the smell of his deodorant teasing at my nostrils again. I waited outside wondering what it'd be like to watch a movie with the opposite characteristic. Then I remembered the theaters were split just like our schools.

Each theater had 240 seats, 60 for each gender and characteristic. Between each set of 60 was a walk way and a railing in the middle. In each theater there are guards on every corner and at the entrances and exits. Fuck, what a waste of time this was... I can't even sit beside my illegal friend. Just then he walked up behind me and handed me a ticket.

"What is your name? I don't even know your name." I said, looking into his eye and making us both panic.

"Would you stop looking at me, Jesus Christ... and the name is Wolfy."

"Wolfy? What kind of name is Wolfy?"

"It's not my name... It's a nickname. My real name doesn't suit my characteristic. No more questions. Let's go see the movie."

"Also, why the movies?! We can't talk, let alone sit beside each other."

"I told you, I wanted to see this movie."

"So, we're only here because you wanted to see this movie? None of this was an attempt to talk to me, or to get to know me better?" I said, glaring at him.

"Pretty much."

I wanted to punch him in the face but that would cause a scene. I want to walk away but he might get me in trouble with the law; saying that I was trying to communicate with him. Either way I'm screwed, so I might as well watch the movie.

I dropped my arms to the side and brushed by him, knocking into his shoulder. I walked up to the ticket usher and gave them my ticket. I was leaded down a hall where there was an older canine standing.

"Card please," he announced.

I reached for my wallet and pulled out my proof of cuties card. He scanned the card and the machine brought up all my information.

"Cutie Male!" He called out, "Follow the blue light."

I turned to the door and followed the blue light down to the theater seats. The theater was packed and only a few seats were still open, so I took the closest one to the exit.

The movie, which I had no interest in, started as soon as I sat down. I guess the pre-show trailers lasted longer than we had anticipated. The movie dragged on, someone died, someone almost died, and the bad guy got away with the girl. The perfect recipe for a sequel... too bad I won't be seeing it. I got up out of my chair and pushed my way out of the theater, into the lobby, and back outside by the flowerbed. I was waiting about 2 minutes before I saw him coming out of the theater, and he definitely wasn't alone. Walking beside him was another Canis Sapiens. His fur was completely white and his clothing was the entire opposite. They were exchanging many laughs and hand gestural signs of people fighting, a lot like the characters in the movie. When they stepped outside and noticed me staring at them they ran over.

"How'd you like the movie Ren?" said Wolfy eagerly.

"It was okay." I lied. I hated it. One of the most putrid movies I've seen in a long time. "So who is this? And let's get out of here and go somewhere more private."

"This is Kal. He's a great friend of mine! He was the one I used to fake call when we talked in the bakery."

"Sounds about right, Wolfy here is always using me for his special 'needs'," Kal said with extra emphasis on the 'needs.'

Wolfy punched Kal in the shoulder lightly and said, "Oh shut up, you... You're just jealous because I'm sexier than you."

"Well, you're jealous because I'm smarter than you!" Kal laughed.

"True enough, let's go to the beach now. Lead the way Ren!"

The beach happens to be a 5 minute walk from the movie theater, perfect for a romantically inclined couple to catch the sunset after a nice night at the movies. But in this case, it was an illegal friendship instead...

I walked 5 meters in front of them so we didn't look too suspicious. When we arrived at the beach they got a little closer, then Kal asked, "Where do you want to sit?"

"Follow me, I have the perfect spot," I said.

I lead them to what was known to me as my 'reading patch'. My reading patch was a patch of grass that was next to the beach and adjacent to a stone wall which was bordering someone's backyard. The spot had many trees for cover and a small rose bush up-shore, which just happened to be blooming.

"Wow... If I were gay I'd think this was a date." Wolfy joked.

I quickly countered, "You wrote that it was a date multiple times on the rocks!"

"You know, Wolfy's a Pansexual, he'll fuck anything that moves." Kal added, laughing all the while

"HEY! That's not true! Don't listen to him Ren; he's just jealous of my ability to love every gender. Kal here is an Asexual; he has the sex drive of a snail." Wolfy said in a panic.

"Actually Wolfy, snails have a very intense sex drive. They're also hermaphrodites that will stab each other with their penises to decide which one is the male or female." I announced rather proudly.

"Wow... I could have gone my whole life not knowing that. Thanks Ren."

"Unless you were referring to the speed of the snail then and only then would your points make sense."

Kal just died of laughter as I pummeled his friend with fact after fact.

"So Kal, you're okay with this whole illegal thing?" I ask curiously

"Well, I mean yeah, why not? I think the system is all messed up and we should be allowed to associate with whoever we want."

I couldn't have said it better myself. I like this guy already.

"Fair enough." I said in agreement. "So Wolfy, why did you do all this in the first place? And don't give me some half-assed answer like last time."

"I wanted to hang out with someone not like me. I was tired of being told who to hang out with and when to hang out with them. I don't care how illegal it was I wanted something more. I feel like a slave in this world; I feel like I've been robbed."

I could tell he meant it this time; it's hard to hear emotion when it's just a rock over the wall. I placed my hand on his back and rubbed it lightly.

"I know what you mean, I feel the same way. I wish these laws were never made..."

In the setting suns final gaze I could see the shimmering light of moisten fur under Wolfy's eyes. He was crying. Why was he crying? Did I make him upset with my facts?

"Hey, W-", before I could say anymore, I felt something pulling at my tail. I turned around to see Kal holding my tail with one hand and shushing me with his other. Why did he want me to keep quiet? All I wanted to do was see if Wolfy was okay. I didn't questions his actions, nor did I act upon Wolfy's feelings, I just sat there and watched as the sun sunk deep into the watery horizon.

The sun had finally set, and the moon and stars started to make their appearance in the night sky. The breeze from the lake brought with it a chill that tickled at my spine. My arms moved around Wolfy's waist, almost as if they had a mind of their own. He immediately stopped sobbing and rested his big handpaw on my back. It was so warm. He was so warm. His sweater formed around my neck as my head laid against his shoulder.

"What are you doing?" said Wolfy, trying hard not to sniffle from his crying.

"I...I-... Um... I'm cold... Sorry!" I said, dropping my hands down into my lap, "It's getting late anyways, thanks for tonight Wolfy; I had a lot of fun."

"Ummm... Yeah, of course," he said, wiping his face full of tears.

I could feel the emotion radiating off him; I wanted so badly to help but Kal told me not to. Maybe tomorrow when he throws a rock at me I'll ask him what the matter was.

I got up and waved them goodbye. Something inside me didn't feel right leaving him like this, but in any case it was getting late. I only said I was going to the movies. I pulled out my phone and called my mom.

"Hey hun, how was the movie?" she asked.

"Horrible, could you please come pick me up now."
