Evolution
#1 of Umbra Chronicles
First chapter in a series following Chase and Daemon Umbra. This has been something I've wanted to write for well over a year but I couldn't bring myself to write it because I felt I wasn't good enough yet. I've finally been able to push myself through and get chapter one out and feel rather good about it, so hopefully it pays off.
The day was going by pretty slowly in class as the professor rambled on about the history between pokekind and the beasts. For two of the students sitting in the back, it was going even slower than they would of liked with sparring was right after this class. Chase Umbra, a destined eevee, who unlike most was born with high expectations because of his silver fur he was born with instead of the common brown. His brother, Daemon was lucky in Chase's opinion as he didn't have to worry as much about aspiring to something great, and could just live like any other riolu.
"Ugh this is taking forever," Chase complained silently to his brother. The eevee barely taking down notes while he thought of their sparring match coming up against one of the other pairs. They were currently the highest ranked pair in the school as they both enjoyed pushing themselves to their limits. Even beating the seniors who had already evolved and closer to their own potential.
Daemon chuckled and nudged his brother. "Won't be too long until we can beat John and his servant again." While Chase may not of been looking forward to his possible future if things failed, Daemon always reassured him that they'd succeed. They both hated the corrupt system currently in place by the destined. The idea that just because of your color, you could be treated differently, and gain wealth and power with ease, sickened them. "So how long until you evolve into an espeon?"
Chase rested his head on a hand as he looked over at his brother. "Not sure but it definitely seems to be the way things are headed. Though just because I'm currently the strongest psychic user, that wasn't born into a psychic affinity, doesn't mean I'll necessarily turn into one."
"You're right, growing up with my family and teaching you to sense aura might make you the first fighting eeveelution." Daemon chuckled at that silently closed his books as the bell rang. "Too bad you can't form an aura sphere, but I guess it was lucky you were even able to sense aura at all."
They got up and started to head out of class as Chase said, "I think it'd be pretty cool to turn into a jolteon or maybe even a vaporeon."
"That'd never happen, for one you're a slow swimmer and lets not talk about your failed attempts when it comes to electric energy." Nudging the eevee's shoulder as Chase rolled his eyes at him and opened their locker. "Plus you'll be great as an espeon or maybe even an umbreon with how much you like the night."
"Alright, fine maybe I won't be one of them but what about you?" Chase asked as he threw his stuff into their locker.
Daemon threw his stuff in right after and closing it as he looked at his brother questioningly. "What about me?"
"You know, evolve into a lucario. Since it's just a matter of when with you."
The riolu hesitated for a moment as he looked up and away for a moment. "I'm just holding off until you evolve since... I'm nice like that."
Chase started to head down to the training field as he said, "With how competitive you are I doubt that."
Catching up with his brother, Daemon wrapped his arm around Chase's neck and put him in a headlock as they walked. "Yeah well you've still never beaten me in a one on one even with your psychic prowess."
A blue aura appeared abound Daemon's arm as Chase's eyes glowed the same color and pulled the arm off of him. "Only because I can't bring myself to hurt the brother I care for and owe everything to." Chase really did have a hard time fighting his brother since without him, he didn't know where he would be in life. While Daemon wasn't his brother by birth, he was the one who gave him a home and a family.
"Chase, let go of my arm will you, you've made your point!" Daemon shouted as he continued to fight the psychic grip on him.
"Sorry, I spaced out there for a second," Chase said as he chuckled nervously and the blue aura disappeared.
Right after they heard heavy footsteps and turned around to see a houndoom and floatzel from security approach them. "Is this riolu harassing you, destined one?" The houndoom asked as he roughly grabbed Daemon's arm.
The eevee's expression going blank and cold as he replied. "No, he is not and let him go so we can get to class." Before the guard could reply, Chase spoke once more. "Or shall I tell your boss how you failed to comply and ended up making a destined fail his class."
While the houndoom was hesitating, the floatzel seemed worried and pulled the houndoom away before bowing. "We're sorry for any trouble we might've caused you. Please forgive my coworker, he's had a rough week."
"You're forgiven, just stop bowing and get back to work." Once they were out of sight Chase turned to Daemon who looked at him rather disappointedly. "Hey, I hate abusing my power but I'd rather have you around for the one class I actually enjoy than try to have them let you go in other ways."
Daemon rolled his eyes before flicking his brother on the nose and walking out of the building and to the field with his brother. Upon nearing the coach, Daemon looked over to Chase and whispered, "So do you think it'd hurt to have at least one of the teachers here not be some destined?" Chase shrugged slightly and smirked as he nodded in agreement that it was a little ridiculous.
Though Daemon had to admit that Coach Hayes wasn't all that bad and pretty laid back especially for a retired arena fighter. "About time you two got here, got something special for the two of you today. We have some special guests from the arena who have come to see the possible competition next year," the destined luxray said to the two. "You might recognize them as the champs from five years ago, they're brothers like you guys actually."
"We have to fight the Illusion Brothers?" Chase said a bit shocked. While he knew the two weren't as good as they used to be due to injuries, the zoroark brothers were still not to be taken lightly with their illusions.
"Should be a fun fight if I do say so myself, though it'll be a tough one especially for you, Chase. You're not facing them today though since one of them is sleeping and have requested the fight to take place at midnight. I've already asked for your schedules to be wiped clean so you can rest and practice. So go to your dorm and rest up boys you're going to need it." The luxray letting out a laugh from how tense the two were. "Loosen up boys, it'll be an actual test of your skills unlike the lazy idiots around here. Who knows the Umbra Brothers might become an even more famous name in the future."
Daemon was the first to speak as he bowed slightly for a second. "Thank you for this opportunity coach, we won't let you down." If there was anything Daemon wanted more than fixing the world, it was proving that he was the best in the arena.
"I'm sure you won't, hell if you had been born a destined I'd say you could of been the best solo fighter but they still have that stupid law in place. You'd think they'd allow nondestined to fight in the solo competition since they'd become highly wanted by others. So many great fighters are not able to shine and it truly is a pity." Turning back to the current fight between two of the other pairs, Coach Hayes yelled out, "You call that a flare blitz, I've seen little charmanders hitting harder than that when they just start spouting out their first fireballs."
Chase chuckled as he did enjoy watching the destined charizard Drake, get yelled at for how lazy and weak he was. "Yeah, It is too bad that Daemon can't compete in that. Bet he could be that champ in a couple years otherwise. Lets head out and get some rest Daemon, so that was can kick the zoroarks' asses later."
Looking around in the bleachers, Daemon couldn't see anyone watching minus the students for this period of the class. "Yeah and I'm sure we can learn a thing or two from this fight as well." Things were quiet for the most part on their way back to their dorm room. Their minds filled with thoughts about how they were going to defeat the former champions.
"Hey guys, looking forward to your match tonight." Turning around the two saw a destined goodra behind them as she approached. "Though I'm not sure if you'll be able to beat them being former champions and all."
Looked over at Daemon then back at the goodra, Chase smirked as he said. "Yeah it will be hard but I'm sure I can manage, right Brit?"
"Oh, yes I'm sure you two will do..."
"Nice try, Dean or it is Sam? Hard to tell with the illusion after all."
The female voice of the goodra faded into the deeper voice of an older male. "No use using this disguise then." Smirking the illusion of the goodra disappeared and the destined zoroark Dean clapped. "Well done boys, guessing I either messed up on the name or the personality. No matter, it can't be helped with little knowledge of the students. I am disappointed by the fact that Hayes is having us go against some unevolved pokekind like yourself but I'm sure he has his reasons." Wrapping his arms around the two, Dean turned them to the guest building and had them walk with him. "The guest building is nice but it is rather lonely over there, why don't you boys come hang out for a while."
Daemon pulled away from the older male and said, "Thanks but we..."
"No, this is an event you see and quite the opportunity for you especially since if you win, you can both graduate early." The brothers froze as they looked at each other with a smirk on their faces. "Though that's unlikely seeing as you're both amateurs and you're going to be useless against us," Dean said as he looked at Chase. "Your biggest strengths are psychic abilities from what I've gathered and as you're aware, our dark energy is immune to it. So hey, have fun with the match and don't take it too seriously kid."
"We've fought dark types before and won, so don't underestimate us either." Chase looked to his brother giving him a reassured look, letting him know he's got a plan then back at Dean. "While you may have an advantage there, I've never had a problem I couldn't overcome with my brother."
"Alright, hey maybe you do have it in you kid." After that Dean seemed more interested to see if some of the old professors were still around and as bad as they were back then still. Upon reaching the guest building, Dean opened up the doors and shouted, "Yo Sam, we've got company."
"You know, I really wish you'd decide to retire, so we could live happily off our earnings and enjoy the ladies." The other zoroark said as he came around the corner. "I was also hoping that you were bringing some females back and not our competition."
"Don't mind grumpy, he's just upset we didn't make it into the tournament last year due to my injury." Taking a seat in one of the chairs he motioned for them to sit down. "And to be honest Sam and I are happy to have the two of you as opponents. Not often that you see a pair of brothers fighting together, and not just some destined and his overpriced bodyguard. Especially since if they lose that season the poor guy gets fired despite it just being the destined who was the reason they lost."
"Yeah and I've been carrying you since you were an egg. Now if you don't mind I'm going to sleep since this will be a tough fight, the riolu over there especially has a fire in his eyes." Before Dean could even get out a syllable out, Sam interrupted him. "Yes the match is for fun but you're still coming off your injury and I'd rather not be humiliated. Plus I'm sure these two would rather see us at our current best then some half ass fight."
"It will be an honor to face the two of you in the field," Chase said as he looked over the two. Their bodies definitely looked like they had been through a lot with their face, arms and legs having a few scars on them. Sam especially who likely took more than a few hits for his brother.
"Chase come with me for a moment," Sam said as he headed out of the room.
Getting up, Chase looked to Daemon and said, "I'll be back."
Once Chase left the room, Dean turned to Daemon. "So I'm curious, how exactly are the two of you brothers?"
"Well before I tell you that, I have a question for you. Do you make Sam take the hits because he isn't destined or was that his choice?" Daemon asked as he looked at the destined zoroark.
"I don't care about any of that destined shit. You know it's bullshit and so do I." Pouring a couple drinks, Dean handed one to Daemon then sat back down and took a drink. "There is a lot of potential in this world and it's wasted because some old people still believe that just because you get a genetic rarity that you're suddenly special. My brother for instance deserves a lot more than me since he's the best of us but the media only cares about us destined. We though are different, I know this since your brother looks at you the same way I do with my brother."
Taking a sip of his drink, Daemon took a deep breath before starting his story. "My family doesn't live near the city, so we lived a few miles away from it up in the mountains. It's peaceful and easy to train there with little to no problem. One day when I was six, Chase and I ran into each other and fell over. We talked and played for a while before it started to rain and I said my goodbyes. But as I was walking away I looked back and saw him just sitting there huddled up underneath the tree. I went back and had him come home with me and good thing I did too since it stopped my mom from yelling at me at the time. She often warned me that it was going to rain and would yell at me when I came back wet. It wasn't long until we figured out that he was an orphan and adopted him."
"Well the two of you may not be blood but you certainly have a bond closer than most." Finishing the last of his drink, Dean leaned forward and set the glass down. "For me it's nothing special really, Sam is just a protective older brother constantly looking after me. Now lets take you to your room for the evening, the beds here are a lot nicer than those in the dorms." Getting up, Dean had Daemon follow him to one of the guest suites.
Meanwhile Chase had followed Sam out into the garden. "Don't know about you but I much prefer the moon over the sun." Sam looking out into the garden as he said, "What do you know about what's going on outside of this academy?"
Walking next to Sam, Chase replied, "Not much really, there's rumors of what might be happening but they don't tell us much."
"It's a warzone out there and for your sake and your brothers, I hope you don't beat us. That's why I want to do my best and not let you get that free graduation. My brother and I have avoided being drafted but that's only because of our fame and money." Sam paused for a minute then turned to Chase. "Well more so my brother than myself, they could care less about me but they won't pull me away from him."
"Just how bad has it gotten?"
"Really bad, they're brainwashing our kind and capturing us with some kind of ball. Before we've always had the advantage of power over the beasts and have kept the peace. Now it's different, they are using our brethren against us and we don't know what to do." Sam grabbed Chase's shoulders firmly and looked him right in the eyes. "So if you do start to get the upperhand when my brother's injury starts to act up, throw the match. I promise to give you the fight you want for the rest of the match regardless. Would of pulled your brother but I doubt he would with the passion in his eyes."
"If what you're saying is true and I do throw the match, my brother will never forgive me."
"Your brother will forgive you and better that you survive this war and stay out of it than graduate six months early."
Letting out a sigh, Chase turned away from Sam and looked out past the garden and to the field. "Fine."
"Thank you, now lets get you some sleep for the match later." Sam led Chase into the building and into his room for the evening.
Later that night they were woke up by the two a couple hours before the match and brought to the dining room. Not much was said as they were all in the process of waking up still. It was odd to say the least and quite unsettling like the calm before the storm as they knew they'd be fighting the experienced fighters soon. It felt like an eternity though as they became more aware as they woke up and blood started pumping. Same couldn't be said for the zoroarks who were a lot calmer than them.
"You need to relax boys, think of it like any other match that's being televised." Dean said as he took another bite of his steak.
"It's what?!" The Umbra brothers both shouted out at once.
"Was your coach's idea actually." The destined zoroark's voice went deeper as he tried to mimic Coach Hayes' voice. "These boys will be fantastic, I haven't seen a pair fight as well together as the two of you back when I was competing. You should come down and have a fight against them and even televise it." Letting out a chuckle, Dean went back to his voice. "Hayes has always been pretty flashy and enjoys the attention."
"Don't worry about it too much," Sam said as he grabbed his drink. "The world is going to hell boys, have fun while you can."
"I doubt things will go on much longer brother, it's just the beasts after all and the rumors are ridiculous." Dean pretty confident that there was nothing to worry about unlike his brother in terms of the war.
"Yes but..."
Sam was interrupted as the door opened and a pikachu servant walked inside. "Sirs, the preparations for the match are almost complete and we request you come to the arena to warm up."
"Thank you, we'll be there shortly," Dean replied calmly as he stood up. "Shall we, gentlemen." They all got up from their seats and made their way out the door. "Though really, I wouldn't worry about it. Even if you were to graduate tonight and get drafted, they wouldn't send you out for months and by then the war would be over. If you can even call it one since our wars have never lasted that long with them in the past."
The zoroarks argued about the war the whole way there while Chase and Daemon just listened and prepared mentally. Once they got to the academy arena and said their goodbyes and good luck to each other, things went quiet. They stretched and talked over strategies, while the speakers could be heard in the distance.
Uniforms for the match were always very light, only protecting more vital areas of the body. Just shorts and a t-shirt with special armor under the shirt to protect internals. Daemon had to be careful since he owned a modified one, since he had to have one with a hole in the chest in case he evolved soon.
"Man they just had to televise this didn't they?" Chase asked his brother with a bit of nervousness in his voice.
Daemon shrugged as he looked out to the exit. "Could be worse."
"How?"
"We could be going against the current champs." Daemon chuckled as he grabbed Chase and squeezed him tightly in a hug. "Block out the crowd and any thoughts of it being televised and just have fun."
Wrapping his arms his brother to return the hug as he said, "Yeah, you're right we can..."
Chase was interrupted by his coaches voice over the intercom. "Umbra Brothers head on out to the arena."
"It's just a match, it's just a match." Chase kept telling himself as he headed out and into the lights of the field. The field was always a fun place to fight though hard for anyone to see visually half the time with one fourth of the field covered in tree in the outer rim and deep water covering several areas. Luckily the jumbo screen helped people stay in the action. He still wondered how Coach Hayes convinced the Academy to get a jumbo screen for the arena.
"This will be the match of the century for the Academy folks! The Academy's best duo in years The Umbra Brothers are going up against the six time former champions The Illusion Brothers! Can the inexperienced duo pull one over on the former champions and show them a thing or two? Lets find out!" The announcer shouted into the mic as it filled the arena with his voice. Chase waiting for the final words to begin the match which seemed to take forever as time slowed to a crawl. Looking to his brother who held up two fingers and nodded. "Begin!"
Sticking close together, they watched their opponents' movement double in speed as they went into a single file formation and their illusion starting to take effect. "Bait out their attacks, we'll surprise them with our aura strike." Daemon said as they slowed down and closed their eyes, starting to concentrate. With their sense of awareness up they, seeked out the zoroarks and ducked just in time to avoid their claws. Countering with a leg sweep, knocking the zoroarks down for a moment.
With a lock on their aura, they opened their eyes and both used double team to surround the two with their own illusion of a mirage of clones. Sam and Dean chuckled as they countered with their own double team the both went after the real Chase. This played right into the hands though as Chase put up an energy barrier and protected himself from one of the attacks. Daemon getting in just in time to take the other hit and counter with a reversal on Sam, throwing him back.
Both pairs backed up as they readied their next attacks. They could hear cheering in the background but did their best to ignore the words, not wanting to know who it was for. "So you can sense aura, Chase!" Sam yelled out as they moved slowly both pairs looking for an opening. "Hayes showed us some videos of your fights here at the school and I was wondering how you avoided attacks so well. I must say that I'm impressed! It's rare that a non-lucario or riolu picks it up." Before Chase could even react he got hit right in the stomach by Sam who closed the distance in the blink of an eye and launched him back a few feet. "But you're not fast enough to avoid everything."
Coughing as he stood up from having the air knocked out of his lungs. Chase watched the two get a hit on Daemon and throw him back as well. Watching closely for the movement this time, Chase dodged the next attack and retaliated with a quick strike, throwing Dean off to the side into a nearby pool of water. Daemon getting his own hit on Sam and throwing him into the pool after Dean.
Just then they looked at each other as a light appeared around them. "Really, in the middle of a fight and on television." Chase muttered to himself as a bright glow surrounded both of them. The light lasted ten seconds, enough time for the zoroarks to get out of the water and in position, not wanting to interrupt their opponent's oddly time evolutions.
Once the light faded the two shook it off as they got used to the changes. "Couldn't of picked a weirder time to evolve, eh boys?" Dean chuckled as the eevee turned umbreon and riolu turned lucario stood before them. "Must say Chase I approve of the way you evolved, black on blue looks good on you." Chase could now feel the moonlight shining down upon him as his wounds seemed to slowly heal and energy regenerate. Looking up Dean saw the moon was full. "Though now I can't play around, I'm afraid."
Dean and Sam charged at Chase, only for Dean to get hit by an aura sphere while Chase took the hit from Sam and threw a fist in payback. Sam was able to take the hit though as he grabbed Chase and threw him into Daemon, knocking them both down. Before they could even get back up, Sam charged the two and got a couple good blows on their stomachs.
Getting up, they could feel that they were all pushing themselves at this point. Though for Dean it seemed his last injury was flaring back up and causing him a lot of pain. Chase was conflicted, he knew they could have this victory right now but thoughts drifted to the earlier conversations to the war and hesitated.
Right as Daemon was about to throw out another aura sphere, sirens went off in the distance and yelling from the school. Everyone froze as they turned their heads and saw fire and lightning go across the sky. "Chase, Daemon, you need to help me with my brother. I don't know how but they must have snuck past the border to attack the Academy." Sam said as he was helping his brother up, Dean screaming muffledly as his leg moved. "I told you to take it easy, Dean."
They were all pretty beat up but on the bright side, Chase could feel himself getting better thanks to the moonlight. Chase helped lift the other side of Dean and went with the zoroarks as they made their way off the property. Bolts of lightning, pillars of fire and jets of water could be seen shooting across the sky as battle ensued around them.
Hearing motion up in the distance Sam stopped and whispered, "Daemon, help Chase carry Dean, I'm going to scout ahead. Dean start building up your energy for an illusion." Sam then slowly made his way ahead before his voice could be heard, yelling out, "Run for it, I'll hold them off!"
They wanted to fight and as they looked at each other, Dean stopped them. "Stop, my brother will be fine and meet us up ahead. I know you boys were only a couple hits from going down. Same might not be true for Chase now with his new abilities but we're not in the condition to fight. Sam is tough and a skilled fighter, he will be fine."
The umbreon let out a disgruntled growl as they all had a hard time holding back. "Fine but if we run into anything else before your illusion is ready, I'll hold them off next." Chase said as he tried to calm himself to think clearly. Making their way through the forest, they followed Deans directions to an old cabin a few miles away.
"Alright, illusion is going up and we should be safe until we get to the cabin. Just don't bump into anything or make too much noise." Within the illusion the air around them had a shimmer while to anyone that may see them it's look like nothing was there. "Sam should be meeting us there, only a few others really knew of that place." Things stayed quiet for the last couple of miles as they felt completely defeated. What started out as a fantastic night took a turn for the worst as their lives were flipped upside down. Not even knowing if any of their friends escaped or were even alive.
Upon reaching the cabin, they scouted out the area with the illusion before making their way inside the cold, abandoned building. Putting Dean on the bed to rest, Chase and Daemon sat down with their backs to the walls just listening. Trees creaked and wind howled as bright flashes went off in the distance showing signs of an electric user still fighting.
There was one thing they were sure about, it was going to be a long night.
