The Other Side Ch 1
#1 of The Other Side
Author's Note: Hi all! This is my first time writing anything, so please watch, fave if you liked it and leave any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism you have. At this point in time, I have two stories that I want to write, this one (which I have no idea where I am going with it. I will be just as surprised at all the twists that come along as you guys) and another one that I think I will call "To be a Pokémon" Unfortunately, titles really aren't my thing, so if anyone has a better title, please leave it in the comments or give me a shout or something and I might use yours! "To be a Pokémon" has been fermenting in my brain for a while now, and this story is more of an exercise in writing so that that one will be better. I really like what I have planned for it, and I hope you guys will too! Also, I hope Z-Byte doesn't mind my using one of his intellectual creations as the basis for this story. If you have read "Machinations of a Trainer" you might know what I am talking about. I'm not using any characters, just something that he made up that made me really want to write a story with it. Especially since his stories stopped coming right as he introduced it.
Legal Jargon: I do not own Pokémon or any other recognizable intellectual property, they are the property of Nintendo, GameFreak, and whoever else might own them. All original characters, however, are MINE! NO TOUCHIE. That is all

"Well," said the pink-haired nurse as she gave her patient a cursory glance to make sure that everything was now proper. "Now that I've fixed you up and gotten the Zubats' poison out of your system, would you mind telling me how you got into that cave without anyone on this island seeing you enter it?" As she posed her question, the inquisitive nurse fixed her patient with a stare that was warm, yet somehow very strongly conveyed the message "You are going to tell me what I want to know, or else."
Her patient is a roughly six foot tall man with a decent tan, curly dark brown hair, glasses and a small horizontal scar situated exactly in the middle of his forehead (his hair almost covered it, but it stopped about half a centimeter too high). Actually, "man" is a bit of an overstatement, as he was only about twenty years of age and just entering into his manhood.
"I-I don't remember," He stuttered. "The furthest back I can remember is when I was already in the cave. I remember I had a reason for entering, but I don't know what that reason is. Or was, whichever the case may be now."
"Well then," replied the nurse. "How about you tell me what happened in that cave, hmmm? Or maybe your name? Where you are from? Why you don't have any Pokémon with you? Something?"
"I just told you I can't remember anything from before I entered the cave. I can't remember my name, where I'm from or what Pokémon even are," the patient responded tersely.
The nurse was stunned at this, how could anyone not know what Pokémon are? Even people suffering from amnesia knew about Pokémon, just like they knew how to read and how to speak. She was afforded no opportunity to explain them to him as he continued speaking, not realizing how much of an effect his words had had on her.
"For whatever reason, I was exploring the cave. I figure I had explored it before because I was rather prepared. I had a good amount of food in my hiking backpack, a flashlight and some spare batteries, plenty of water and most importantly, the cave held no fear for me. I'm not sure if it was familiar or if I just wasn't afraid, but I think I had explored it before."
"Anyways, as I wandered deeper and deeper into the maze of tunnels, I eventually noticed a strange light emanating from somewhere deeper within the cave. I was curious, and I began to try and find the light. It wasn't what I was looking for, but I felt drawn towards it, I almost felt like I HAD to find it. Especially about ten seconds later when its intensity waned a bit and then flared up again, except this time in a different color. At first, it was yellow, like a flashlight. Then it turned to red, then purple, then pink, then a sea blue. It kept changing and I kept count, there were eighteen different colors. A few were only different by a few shades, but it was noticeably different."
"As I got closer to the source of the light, I noticed that the light didn't get any brighter, there just seemed to be more of it. As weird as that sounds, it's true. By the time I found the source, I had long since put my flashlight away. The source of the light was a wall at the end of a rather long corridor. There was no exit besides the way I had entered, but that didn't bother me. Short of a major earthquake, I wouldn't get stuck in there."
"As I walked down the hallway, I could feel my heartbeat quicken with excitement and anticipation. Thinking back on it, it was rather strange how the speed at which the light changed colors began to match my heart rate, but I didn't even notice that at the time. It was about three quarters of the way down the corridor that things started to go wrong.
"The first thing that happened was this sudden, horribly bright flash of white light that blinded me for nearly a minute. During that minute, I was able to hear the sound of rock shifting and feel the ground shaking. I stayed put, figuring that, with my luck, I would run into the rocks that were undoubtedly falling from the ceiling."
"When the light finally disappeared, I looked around and noticed that the lights on the wall were coming from eighteen differently colored stones. Most of them looked like gems or crystals while a few of them looked like strange rocks. I looked behind me and noticed that there was no collapsed ceiling, it looked more like the wall itself had shifted over to block my way out. Out of all of the stones on the wall, I felt most drawn to the emerald. At least I assume it's an emerald, it was much bigger than I had been lead to believe gemstones could possibly be. The half of it that protruded from the wall could fit comfortably into the palm of my hand.
"After staring at it for what felt like an eternity, I pulled it out of the wall. Surprisingly, there was no resistance to it, it just came out. Even more surprising was the fact that the light changed color one last time to an emerald green hue, and began to pulse. The other stones began to crumble into dust one by one. When the last one, a grayish white stone, finally crumbled, the entire wall began to shake. At first I was afraid it was an earthquake, but I soon found out it was something much more...interesting. The wall began to turn into sand, from the top down. Soon, there was a pile of sand where once there had been a wall."
"After the wall finished its self-disintegration, the emerald green light faded. I put the emerald in my bag, pulled out my flashlight and began to try and find my way out. I hadn't taken three steps before I was attacked by a strange bat creature. I fended it off only to be attacked by two more of the things. At this point, I began to run in an attempt to find the way out as soon as possible. Unfortunately, running only attracted more of the blue bat monsters. Before long, I felt several sharp pricks all over my body. The pricks soon began to burn and I finally began to worry. Fortunately, I found the exit soon after that. The bats didn't follow me outside the cave, for which I was grateful. The poison had become too much to bear though, and I just collapsed on the sand outside. Next thing I knew, you were tending to my wounds and asking me why I went in there without Pokémon."
Nurse Joy was dumbfounded. If he was telling the truth, what did it all mean? At the same time, she had never seen anyone take that much Zubat poison and live. Anyone that was human anyways. Could he have been hallucinating? Could it have affected his memory? Could he be something other than human?
She was jolted out of her stupor by her patient asking "Could I have something to eat? I'm starving."
She replied in the affirmative and left for the hospital kitchen, an idea beginning to take hold in her mind. There was no way for her to determine what had or hadn't happened. But he could. After his meal, this man was going to meet his second kind of Pokémon. Only this time, it was going to be on purpose.
