A Fateful Encounter
#1 of Finding Peace
It had been several months since that fateful adventure, the legendary clash with Ganon that had ultimately ended in Link's victory. After the climactic battle and Midna had returned to her own world, destroying the mirror in the process, things began to settle down. The world became quiet and slow again, far too slow for the tastes of a young adventurer who had single-handedly saved the world as he, or anyone else, knew it.
Little had changed since then, in fact, most of Ordon Village's inhabitants went about their lives as if the whole event had never happened. Link, of course tried to settle into the mundane living he once had, but realized the futility of trying to find excitement in it after the epic adventure he had so enjoyed just months before. He quickly left his tiny village, searching Hyrule for the next grand adventure. Much to his dismay, it seemed as if every race in Hyrule had returned to their mundane lives.
Slaying monsters on the roads was proving to be less and less of a thrill. His weeks of clearing the roads had left encounters few and far between. They all knew his scent, and learned to fear him. He knew that he needed to find something new, or risk going insane.
In the last few days, he had taken to staying in his wolf form. He enjoyed the feel of the cool breeze through his fur as he ran full speed through the fields until his paws refused to run any farther. After a day of running mindlessly about, he often found himself dipping into a cool river, catching a fish, and laying about in the setting sun to dry off. His new life wasn't exactly the adventure he was looking for, but at least it gave him something to pass the endless hours of what he could only hope was a temporary peace.
He had been a wolf for roughly a week. His senses became far stronger than they had been when he switched back and forth. He also noticed that he had been taking up more lupine behaviors. He was still adjusting to eating raw meat, and knew it would likely be some time before he was fully comfortable with it. He would admit, however, that it was convenient to not have to cook the meat first.
It was a typical day, one much like the many that had come before. His running through the fields had turned up nothing but some noisy birds. He managed to sneak up close enough to catch one before it took off. It wasn't the greatest meal he had ever eaten, but it would keep him going until he found something else. It was that evening that his world would change completely. The sun was slowly setting over the mountains in the distance. He knew it would start to cool down soon, but knew that his fur could protect him from anything Hyrule's climate had to offer. It was when it started to rain that he decided that finding shelter would be a good idea.
It quickly began pouring; soaking his fur and removing any warmth it once held. He knew a cave not too far off that would suit his needs perfectly. He began running for it, anxiously awaiting it to peek over the horizon, offering shelter from the numbing cold of the storm. He suddenly noticed something unusual, causing him to dig his claws into the wet ground and glide to a halt, nearly barrel-rolling down a muddy hill in the process. As he approached it, he realized it was a corpse of one of the bandits that occasionally patrolled the roads, attacking anyone whose misfortunate it was to pass them. He thought back and realized that he hadn't seen any bandits that day. He sniffed it, trying to discover the identity of its mysterious attacker. The scent was of nothing he had encountered before. His nose continued to probe the dead body, his mind having long forgotten about the cold or the rain.
The claw and fang marks covering the body could only have been made by a wolf. He found this peculiar because to his knowledge, there were no other wolves in Hyrule. Further sniffing revealed a new scent. Upon identifying it, he chuckled. He realized that whoever had taken this one down clearly had little respect for it, as he had urinated on the corpse.
Another sniff revealed a strange scent in the pool of mixed blood and urine. He tried to identify it, but the rain had washed away too much of the scent to smell any more. His mind returned to him, his senses slowly returning. The cold rain began to eat away at his strength. The last few minutes of the run to the cave felt like an eternity as his muscles began to cramp from the cold water.
He shook himself off as he entered the cave, soaking the walls around him. The cave wasn't deep, roughly five yards from mouth to back, but it was enough to keep the roaring wind and frigid rain out. He quickly curled up in the back, his mind locked on his discovery. He hoped that the mysterious attacker would reveal himself again. The thought of finding whoever, or whatever did that brought hope to the young warrior. He knew that he might finally find a life of excitement again.
Sleep did not come easy that night, whether from the cold, or the thought of another adventure, he had to force himself to sleep. After several hours, he finally managed to drift off into a restless slumber.
Link awoke the next morning. The ground had dried completely, telling him he had slept in. This didn't particularly bother him, as he had no reason to get up at all that day. Then the events of last night rushed back to him. He instantly jumped to his feet and dashed out of the cave, running as fast as his paws would take him, back to the body he had found the night before.
The body was still there, washed clean by the rain. Any scent had been washed away, leaving him with no clue where to start looking for whoever it was that left it there to rot in the hot sun. He sniffed the body anyway, desperately searching for something, to no avail. He wandered away slowly, his tail drooped. Last night brought such excitement, only to end in utter disappointment at the hands of nature.
The sun was already nearly directly above when he woke up, and it was quickly becoming unbearably hot. Link lied down beneath a large tree, resting in the cool shade. He rested his head on his paws, his eyes closing slowly. A soft noise made his ear twitch. He lifted his head and listened. It sounded something like someone, or something running through thick grass. He looked around. Several trips around the tree only assured him he was alone. For a moment, he thought he imagined it. He rested his head back on his paws.
Another noise made him leap to his feet. Someone WAS nearby. He cautiously looked around the tree, once again, discovering himself alone. He gave a slight whimper, starting to think he was going crazy. Giving a huff, he ventured out into the midday sun. He closed his eyes and whined happily as the cool waters of a nearby river slowly washed the tension from his paws. He stepped farther in, eventually letting his paws lift off of the sandy ground beneath him and swimming out into the sleepily flowing river. He dipped his head under the water, a brief respite from the pounding heat of the sun.
As his head broke the surface, he watched the clean water wash from his eyes, allowing him to see again. It was then that his ear picked up a familiar sound. He turned in the direction it came from, seeing nothing. He shook his head and dipped back under the water, returning to the surface a moment after. He swam to the riverbank and sat down, thinking to himself. His moment of temporary clarity was greeted with the sound of a small scuffle...no...it was an all-out fight. He rushed toward the sounds, doing his best to remain hidden as he followed his ears. Eventually, he found what he had been searching for. Several bandits were attacking what looked to be a large beast.
Link looked up, hopping up the large branches of a nearby tree, watching from the cover of the dense leaves. His new perspective gave new insight as to what was happening. It was in fact, several bandits attacking something: a white wolf. He watched as the group of five bandits was being mercilessly taken out one at a time by this mysterious stranger. It didn't take long for him to notice that there appeared to be more at work than just a wolf attacking some "helpless" bandits. There were several occasions that they appeared to flinch in pain, although the wolf was clearly not attacking them.
He crawled to the edge of the branch, watching even more intently. The wolf appeared to be abnormally agile, flipping over and dashing around his assailants before they knew he had moved. He was clearly very playful, as every time he dashed around one, he lifted his leg and sprayed them, causing them to become all the more enraged.
Link crept closer, trying to see more. The battle was nothing like he had ever seen before. It appeared not as if the wolf was attacking, but some invisible blade, slicing through the bodies of his attackers. He noticed something peculiar as another of the bandits fell. As his now-lifeless body hit the ground, flowers sprung up around it, then immediately died and faded away, but not before leaving a dazzling display of beauty and color.
The mysterious wolf flipped over the last remaining bandit, his side facing Link as he lifted his leg for another taunt. His eyes opened wide as he realized that the wolf wasn't male. His tail wagged excitedly as he watched this wolf grab the bandit in her fangs and hurl him several feet, blood running from his neck. He struggled to his feet, only to collapse motionless.
Link's thoughts wandered. He forgot about the battle, thinking about his future. He remembered some of the villagers complaining to him about each day with their children being a never ending adventure. They often laughed at this, and joked about how he should start a family of his own.
He never had any interest in this, despite being fairly popular around Hyrule, as any hero would be.
He thought about what it would be like to have a family, young pups running about, the soft fur of another to curl up with every night, passing along things he had learned to his children. Link shook the thoughts from his head. If nothing else, it would be someone to be with. The long days of being alone were starting to wear on him. He longed for someone to keep him company. His paw slipping off the branch snapped him back into reality. There was a small snap as it broke a twig from the tree. He hadn't realized he was slowly crawling forward.
The wolf's ear twitched and she turned in his direction. Link backed up, hoping he wouldn't be seen through the dense leaves of the tree. His heart sank as the sound of a blade passing through wood filled his ears, and the tree slowly started falling over. He leapt from it before it hit the ground, leaving him face to face with the white wolf.
Upon closer examination, he saw that the wolf was not completely white. In fact, there were several strange red markings around her body. He didn't have time to admire them as the moment he hit the ground, she started growling at him. He took up a defensive posture.
The two wolves slowly circled each other, not once removing their gaze. They growled at each other, waiting for the other to make the first move. The female wolf charged at link, spinning around him. Link countered with his spin attack, knocking her to the ground with a loud whimper. He took the opportunity to pin her down, placing his fangs around her neck.
She waited for Link to make his next move, panting lightly. He removed his fangs from her neck and looked at her. After a long moment of silence, he licked her muzzle. She tilted her head and whimpered as he got off of her, allowing her to get up.
The white wolf sat up and looked at him, unsure of what to make of his actions. It was at this point that Link got an opportunity to get a close look at her fur. The red markings wisped their way along her shoulders and head, stretching partway down her flank. Aside from the strange red markings, and the black portion of her tail, she was pure white. She was the most beautiful wolf he had ever seen.
She appeared to smile and darted off, leaving a trail of long grass and flowers in her wake. Link followed along behind her. He wasn't surprised that the bandits had trouble with her, she was fast. He could barely keep up when she reached full sprint. He smiled as he chased her through the fields of Hyrule, thinking of how much he was enjoying it, and hoping she was as well. It dawned upon him that this might just be the adventure he was looking for.
The wolf stopped upon reaching Lake Hylia. Link sat down next to her, panting lightly from chasing her. She laid down, basking in the soft light of the evening sun. As the sky turned various shades of yellow and red, he noticed the way it reflected off of her fur, giving it a lustrous sparkle. He rested his head in his paws and watched her, admiring her beauty in the setting sun. At that moment, he felt like they were the only two living beings left in the world. He wouldn't let anything ruin this moment. A sudden break in his thoughts revealed that she was watching him too.
He leapt into the cool water of the lake, diving deep. After several dives, he found what he was looking for. He took a deep breath, diving as deep as he could, eventually reaching a large fish. He sunk his fangs into its scaly body.
The fish fought intensely, refusing to be caught as the fangs clenched harder into its body. Eventually, its strength gave out and Link dragged it to the surface, laying it in front of his new friend.
She looked up at him inquisitively. He nudged the fish to her, giving a light smile. The female wolf stood and shook her head, grabbing the fish and launching it high into the air. Link heard a large metallic swish, and the fish landed between them again, cut clean in half. She nudged the front half towards him, digging into the tail portion. He didn't argue, slowly gnawing on the fish's scales, savoring the flavor. His eyes never left her as they ate. He smiled to himself as he watched her pick apart remains of her meal, trying to eat as much of it as she could.
They quickly finished and watched the sun set, often glancing at each other. Their tails wagged casually. The soft grass felt good beneath their fur. The sun had long-since set when they had their first thoughts about shelter.
The thoughts were fleeting, as they looked up into the clear sky, alight with diamond-like stars. It was at that moment that a shooting star passed through the otherwise uninterrupted sky. The two wolves glanced at each other briefly before watching it. Link instantly got the feeling they had both wished for the same thing, which was even confirmed when her tail gently landed on his and curled around it.
He gave a look of surprise in he looked over at the strange wolf. She simply smiled and moved closer to him. He could do little but watch as her fur brushed against his own. It was soft, far softer than he had imagined. His mind refocused on the moment as he realized he was leaning into her. She didn't seem to mind; in fact, she even seemed to welcome the gesture, leaning back into him.
Link laid his head down with a yawn, closing his eyes as the cool night breeze blew through his long fur. His mind circled around this mysterious visitor, and what excitement she would bring to both Hyrule, and himself. He suddenly found himself floating in an ocean of uncertainty. For the first time in his life, he was unsure of what to do. But one thought continued to comfort his weary mind: He found his adventure.
