Shia and Niku
Another short story time with a friend on Skype. It was sweet, so I cleaned it up some and decided to post it here. I hope you guys find some enjoyment in it. <3 <3
A very long time ago, there were two wolves. There was a female named Shia and a male named Niku. They were of the First Wolves.
In their time, there was no Moon and there was no Sun. There was only one great star in all the sky and all the rest was blackness.
Niku loved Shia very, very much; but she was so beautiful, he did not think he had anything to offer her. Other wolves were stronger and faster or more clever or wise. They all wanted her as a mate.
Often, Niku would sit high atop a cliff overlooking the clear lake where Shia would like to rest. He would watch and be astounded by her, but sad too.
At last he came up with a plan. None of the other wolves could shine like the great star. If he could take some of its light, she would be amazed. It had enough to spare, surely.
So Niku travelled to the top of the highest mountain in the world, the one whose peak almost reached the unmoving great star.
He stood up on his paws, but it was just out of reach. Determined, he gathered himself and leapt!
But the star, though so vast, was surprisingly fragile. As he jumped, he hit the star too hard and it shattered into countless small, glowing pieces that rained to the ground.
A long time later, Shia came to the mountain top and found Niku there, crying sadly. "What is wrong?" She asked in her quiet voice.
Miserable, Niku replied "I tried to take some star light to impress you..but I failed and broke the great star. Now all is dark and you will never love such a foolish wolf."
Shia smiled. "You are a very foolish wolf. I would have never loved you for star light." She said. Niku laid his head in his paws, nodding dejectedly.
She continued. "I loved you for sharing your den with the pups when they are lonely. And I loved you because even though you were not the strongest or the fastest, you always praised others on a successful hunt and did your best to help the pack." She approached him, nuzzling him softly.
Niku started and blushed. "But...what of the star? we cannot survive without its light" He asked.
Shia smiled and bade him look at the faintly glowing sack she had beside her. "I brought as many pieces as I could gather. Maybe we can fix it."
For many hours they labored, fitting star pieces together. At last they had every piece Shia had found back together in the sky, but it was much smaller and much less bright. They both huffed in frustration. "This will never do." Niku sighed.
He looked at Shia. "I have loved you all my life. I am a foolish wolf. But all that I have, such as it is, is yours if you would have me."
Shia laughed, her silvery voice echoing. "Everything is much more than many others have offered. I accept. I love you, wolf of my heart". And with that, they shared a long, loving kiss under the remains of the great star.
Nikus heart flared with joy, as did Shias. The power of their two hearts caused a bright light to swell around them.
The light hit the star and flooded into it. It grew brighter and brighter until it lit up the entire sky more than ever before. the blackness was gone, replaced by beautiful blue.
The wolves laughed and danced with each other, rejoicing. With their energy lighting the star, they spent their lives gathering the fallen star shards together.
At night, when they rest from playing, you can see all the shards they've found, as they lovingly piece it back together. Other wolves howl their encouragement, eager to see how the great star will shine, filled with the brightness of their love.
The end.
