Chapter 1
Unexpected Invitation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom Johnson stood in front of his locker, his large, bushy tail drooping between his legs. He had just emerged beaten and exhausted from a merciless dodgeball game in gym class. Fridays at Fursona High School usually meant relief from tedious schoolwork and strict teachers, but not today. He sighed. The fox was grateful that the week was nearly over, especially since it was not only a weekend, but a three day weekend with Monday off.
He opened his locker and gazed into a pair of bright, emerald green eyes. He always seemed to forget about the small mirror, but nonetheless he examined himself. The fox was short for a sixteen year old; about five foot four, making him feel out of place compared to the rest of his peers. Today he had decided to wear a vibrant red and white striped shirt with a pair of brand new black denim jeans and almost new Nike sneakers.
Gym had not been kind today, for he felt a lot of small but fresh and painful bruises beneath his fervently red fur. It was a wonder that he had managed to avoid the dodgeballs that sought his face as a target.
While Tom was smoothing out his ruffled fur, he failed to hear the heavy tread of sneakers stop behind him. He suddenly yelped as a huge paw clamped down on his shoulder. He spun around to look up at a tall, well built husky with copper red and creamy white fur. He was wearing an orange and blue football jacket marked 'Fursona Football Team' and blue loose fitting jeans. The Husky's ocean blue eyes observed him, his mouth forming his incredible smile as he lifted his paw.
"Hey Tommy, What's up?" The husky said, grinning at him. "Don't sneak up on me like that!" The fox growled, punching the husky in the chest. The husky didn't even flinch as he raised his arms. "Sorry Tommy, but I couldn't resist scaring you," The husky apologized. "I wasn't scared!!" The fox's face reddened. "I was just surprised."
"Sure you were, Tommy," replied the husky sarcastically. The fox's ears twitched.
"How many times have I told you to call me Tom, not Tommy?" Although Tommy was his full name, it seemed childish and he preferred to be called Tom. "But I think Tommy's a good name," The husky said, smiling down at him. The fox couldn't help but smiled back.
The husky was Anthony Mason, Tom's best friend and wide receiver for the football team. Anthony was only a month older than Tom, yet he stood at six foot ten and could easily be mistaken for a senior. Anthony and Tom had been best friends since they were cubs and they were now into their sophomore year at high school.
Tom had not changed much over the years, only grown. But the husky had joined the football team and had grown taller, developing muscles with the constant training, practices, and games. Next to the husky, the fox felt puny and weak, but he knew his friend never thought of him that way. The odd thing about both of them was that they had similar shades of red fur around their bodies. A white streak of fur also flowed from beneath their chins and down their chests.
Tom grabbed his books and shut his locker, walking alongside his friend as they headed for their next and last class, Biology. As they strode down the noisy hallway, Tom noticed that Anthony seemed a bit distracted and tense today, which was unlike his usual confident and peppy self. The husky's tail wagged back and forth slowly in a hesitant and uneasy manner.
"So...uh, are you going to next week's game to watch us beat down those Paddington Panthers?" The husky asked, breaking the silence between them in the crowded hallway. "Of course I am, I've never missed a game and I don't plan on missing one anytime soon," The fox answered and the husky gave a small smile.
Tom always felt that half the reason he went to the games was to secretly ogle over the football players, especially Anthony and the school's senior quarterback Mike Winters. The fox had felt that way for males for a long time. Tom was gay, but he didn't like repeating it to himself, especially since no one else knew. He especially felt his attractions strongest towards Anthony and Mike.
Mike was a seven foot tall, well built gray wolf. There was no way Mike would ever notice Tom though. Mike was one of the most popular seniors at school. They had only talked to each other once when Anthony had introduced him, but that was as close as he had gotten to the wolf. Now, only being with Mike would be a fantasy, something Tom had to admit would probably never take light in reality.
"By the way, there's no practice today, which means I can give you a ride after school." Anthony flashed him a large grin. Tom always found the husky even more attractive whenever he was being kind to him and he tried hiding his blush.
"Thanks."
They entered the biology room and sat down in their usual seats, Tom in the fourth row front desk and Anthony behind him. Fridays in Biology meant either worksheets or quizzes. The board announced a big pop quiz in bold blue marker. Tom couldn't help but giggle as he heard Anthony groan behind him. Just then Tom spotted his friend Tyan, an otter, walking into the room.
"Hey Ty, over here!" The fox called out, waving his hand in the air. Tyan glanced up and walked over to them. Tom and Anthony had met Tyan in middle school. It had taken a lot of effort to make the lonely and shy otter talk about himself, but after that they had all become good friends.
The otter had a fascinating shade of blue gray fur and pale green eyes, and was about six foot two. His sleek and toned body was proof of his position as co-captain of the schools swimming team. He was wearing a light blue shirt that asked "Got Game?" and dark blue below the knee shorts.
"Hey guys, how's it hanging?" the otter asked cheerfully. "Not much, how 'bout you?" answered Anthony. "I'm psyched that the weekend is here. The swim team made state finals and the competition is this weekend!" "The football team is going to the state semifinals next week and I know we'll blow them away." added Anthony confidently.
The two furs were now engaged in deep conversation about their school sport and Tom shifted uncomfortably in his chair, feeling a little awkward. Tom would always break out in a cold sweat whenever the main subject of the conversation was sports, so the fox would stay silent. Sports were definitely not the fox's strong suit; they were almost like his weakness.
He always felt ashamed at how weak he was compared to everyone else, he felt inferior. He envied Anthony and Tyan's confidence and audacity, unlike his fearful and timid self. One time Anthony had playfully punched and bruised him, although he hadn't told the husky it had hurt out of fear of being humiliated. Tyan had once taken him swimming to his local pool and he had nearly drowned, only to have the otter pull him out of the water.
He was not as strong or as fast as other furs in his age group and not only that, the fox was better in academics than athletics. He could always ace an exam, but he could never catch a ball. Most of his classes were all advanced classes, and yet he still aced them with ease. One thing that surprised him was that no one had called or even considered him a nerd.
The sudden laughter of his friends snapped him out of his thoughts, and he blinked at them. They kept giggling and looking at him, unable to speak through their fits of laughter. Now the fox felt embarrassed, because he realized that they knew he wasn't even listening to them. Their laughter died down faster than he expected, and he gave them a nervous chuckle. They continued staring at him, and he still was unsure of what had happened.
"Uh... What did I miss?" he asked them, trying to sound nonchalant. "I asked you which sport you would join. You didn't answer, so Tyan flicked paper at you, but you still didn't say anything," Anthony answered with a light chuckle. Tom looked at Tyan, then down at the floor to find piles of crumpled paper scattered around his desk.
Oh God, how humiliating, He thought as he scooted out of his desk and picked up the mess of papers. He walked over to the trash can and dumped them in, returning to his desk to find the husky and otter smiling oddly at him. Very suspicious thought a voice in his head. He sat down quietly; too scared to even turn around and look at his friends after what had just happened.
He almost fainted from relief as the bell rang out its loud and annoying pinging, which was followed by their teacher Mr. Benson walking in. The entire classroom sat in deathly silence as Mr. Benson gathered a stack of papers on his desk and passed them out. The pitch black wolf scanned the room as he did, his pale orange eyes commanding an air of seriousness that frightened even the bravest of the students. He handed the test to Tom, eyeing him in an expression the fox couldn't read. As he finished the last row he said in a deep rumbling voice ", Alright students, you may begin your test."
The fox let out a long sigh after realizing he had been holding his breath. It seemed that Mr. Benson would always find ways to torture his students, whether it is with frustrating assignments or complicated, lengthy tests. Tom briefly scanned the fifty question test, finding it rather wordy yet straightforward. The answers came naturally to him as he filled in blank after blank. He stood up and handed the test to a stern faced Mr. Benson, feeling the wolf's eyes boring into his back as he strode to his desk.
He checked the clock and groaned inwardly, finding that only ten minutes had passed. Twenty minutes passed, the only sound the patter of pencils and small, hollow ticking of the clock echoing across the room. By now Tom was really bored, having nothing to do but endure yet another twenty minutes of class, started one of his weird habits. He lay his head down in his crossed arms on the desk, pretending to sleep, but left a small space below his elbow so he could watch people without being noticed. Tom always felt naughty doing this, but he really couldn't help himself. The irresistible urge to do this came up on a daily basis, usually with Mike, Anthony and even Tyan.
He quietly watched Tyan work on his test, who was obviously stuck on a problem by the frustrated look on his face. His eyes wandered to lower extremities, trying to picture the otter without his shirt. He envisioned the otter standing before him, slowly peeling off his shirt in a seductive and sexy way. The fox would lean against him and rub the otter's washboard stomach, feeling the perfectly sculpted muscles push and harden beneath his paw. He would scratch the skin beneath Tyan's soft fur and lean up to softly kiss the otter.
Tom felt his jeans begin to tent as he continued to fantasize about his friend who was sitting no less than three feet away. As his paws wandered over the otter's furry chest, Tyan began to slowly slide his shorts off. The fox's black furred paws slowly massaged the otter's groin, coaxing a few murrs out of the otter. The otters tongue would travel around in his mouth, his own slim tongue wrestling with the larger one. Tyan suddenly yanked off his pants, revealing light blue boxers with an impressive bulge present at the center. Tom could almost picture the perfect malehood hidden beneath the soft fabric. "Go ahead" ordered Tyan, smiling down at his friend. He felt himself pant as he reached down to slide the boxers off and...
RRRRRIIIINNNGGG!!
Tom jerked his head up, finding that half the class was already rushing out the door. He picked up his books and ran out with the rear of the crowd. The fox looked around, but he could not see Tyan or Anthony. He ambled towards his locker, hoping to find his friends waiting there for him. His locker stood alone, and he quickly gathered his things in his backpack to continue his search. He weaved through the thick crowd, scanning the hall for his friends who had left without notice. He turned a corner and nearly fell backwards when he bumped into someone. Luckily, whoever he had bumped into had caught his arm and helped him regain his balance.
"Thanks for..." he stopped once he got a good look at his rescuer. "Uh...hi Mike," he said with some trepidation, staring into the pair of golden yellow eyes. The light gray wolf smiled at him and his face brightened. "Hey Tom, I was looking for you earlier." Really?
Tom stared at him for a moment, unable to believe his luck. Do something idiot! reminded a stern voice in his head, mentally snapping him out of his stupor. "W-what do you need?" asked the fox nervously. It felt weird talking to the wolf that he highly regarded. It was almost like meeting some celebrity from TV. "My birthday party is tonight, and I have an invitation for you... and Anthony."He paused to look around for the husky, then handed him a small orange envelope from his pocket. Tom gathered his courage and accepted it. "Um...thanks Mike" was all the fox could muster.
"Don't forget to tell Anthony," The wolf reminded him. "Sure" said Tom, giving a small but reassuring smile. Mike gave a small nod and walked off. Tom continued staring at him until the wolf rounded a corner and was gone. He gave a sigh of relief looked back down at the bright envelope with curiosity. An invitation for me?
He opened the envelope. It contained a business-like card with Mike's address and the party time. He lived in the Clearwater estates, which was also known as the rich fur's sect of Middleview. The party didn't start until nine. He looked up and saw Anthony walking towards him with a goofy grin plastered on his face. The fox tried to look angry.
"I...uh... needed to go really badly." The fox stamped his foot impatiently. Anthony gave him a defeated look and scratched behind his head. "I'm sorry." The fox's face transitioned to a big smile. "Its okay, I thought you ditched me for a second. Just tell me next time when you go." The husky's eyes brightened and he smiled his incredible smile. "Come on, let's go."
Tom followed his friend out a set of doors leading to the student parking lot. His thoughts ran back to his previous encounter with the wolf. The thought of going to a party with Mike thrown by Mike made the fox smile. He even had been personally invited.
Maybe he'll even ask me out! he told himself. Mike may be single, but if he was gay, he could definitely get a better guy than me. His smile lessened and his ears drooped at the thought. For all he knew, Mike probably didn't even like him as a friend. He looked forward at Anthony and his smile grew again. At least I have Anthony.
Tom hoped that one day he would be able to tell the husky how he felt. The husky was always nice to the fox. He would treat him to lunch and offer him rides. Anthony would try to make him feel better if something was bothering him. He told the fox that they could always talk about anything. Tom was always grateful for the husky. He always said thanks, but he still wondered how he could repay the husky. They silently arrived at the husky's truck.
"Hey Tom," He looked up at the husky. "Is something wrong?" He tried to hide the warm feeling the husky gave him as he smiled. "No." He suddenly remembered the wolf's invitation. "Look, we got invited to Mike's birthday party."He pulled out the card and handed it to the husky, who read it over. Tom didn't mention that the wolf had asked for him specifically.
"Wow, its tonight huh?"
"Yeah."
"Can you make it?"
"Yes."
"Do you..." The fox already knew the question he was about to ask.
"Yeah, we should go together." The fox hadn't meant for it to sound so awkward. Anthony grinned at him. "Great!" He turned around, shoved the card in his pocket and opened his truck. Tom walked around to the passenger's side and marveled at the well conditioned car.
Anthony was the proud owner of a midnight blue 2001 Dodge truck. The outside was scratch free and clean enough to see your own reflection. He could tell the husky had worked hard to keep his sixteenth birthday gift spotless and magnificent. He climbed onto the large truck and entered another grand atmosphere. The cozy inside was covered in slightly faded cognac brown leather upholstery. The large interior was perfectly suited for the bulky husky. They both clicked on their seat belts.
Anthony quickly started the car and pulled off onto the freeway. The ten minute drive seemed to take ages in the silent car. They usually had something to talk about on the way home, but today seemed different. They drove on quietly, Anthony concentrating on the road and the fox watching the outside world shifting away. Tom felt the husky's tail slap against his own, as if expecting the fox to say something. His black-tipped tail twitched back in response the whole way. The car finally pulled onto the curb and Tom managed a quiet thanks.
He grabbed the door handle but was abruptly pulled back by a paw on his arm. "Wait..." He turned and gave the husky a quizzical look. Anthony pulled his paw back and sighed. "Tom...I was...uh, wondering..." The fox turned his whole body towards the husky. It felt a little odd seeing the husky nervous. "I was wondering if you wanted to stay over. You know, to sleepover and hang out at my house. Just you and me."
He saw the husky's face glow red despite his fur and the husky fidgeted nervously with his fingers. Tom grew nervous as well and wondered why he was also embarrassed. Maybe Anthony thought this as more than a casual sleepover. Although he hadn't been over to the husky's house in weeks, he didn't want to disappoint or offend him.
"I...yes, I will." The husky brightened up and smiled cheerfully. "We can go after the party." The fox smiled back and stepped of the car. He closed the door behind him and watched Anthony drive off, not missing the large smile worn by the husky.
Tom still wondered about Mike, the party, the sleepover, and Anthony. It all seemed so strange and unpredictable, and life always worked that way.
