#8 of The Choices of Fate

Well, here is the last story chapter of The Choices of Fate. I know last time I sad that there were two more, but I while writing this chapter, I realized how short what I had planned was, and so I merged the last two chapters together. As it stands, this is still the shortest chapter in the series, but I cannot extend the story any longer, and I hope that this is enough to satisfy my fans. I will most likely write the Epilogue I mentioned last time, so you can look forward to that. I am also working on my next story, I have taken a liking to writing. Thank you for your support. Now for the standard stuff. For all the furs who stumbled upon this story, you will want to make sure you read the previous seven chapters. This story will make MUCH more sense, and you will get the full brevity of the situation. You will also see all the juicy yiff. This story and all characters are copyright me, T-ster, and I do not like people stealing my work. However, if you would like to use my characters, please ask. In the hopes to cover myself legally, NO MINORS!! If you are under 18 or 21 depending on where you live, either leave, or don't blame me for any psychological trauma. Even though there is no yiff in this story, it still contains violence. It is not for the weak of heart or mind. Now, without further ado, the conclusion to The Choices of Fate

  • * * I walk along the hillside, looking over the furs assembled in the field below. Over four years have been spent to get to this point. No need delaying the inevitable, but I think they deserve, maybe even need a speech to carry them through the next ordeal. (I think so too. Go give them your best.) Thanks Emelia. Do you mind sending the speech to everyone? I don't think my voice will carry well enough for all of them to hear me, and not to mention a good number of them are from different countries. I don't think all of them speak English. (No problem.) "Alright, it's been six long years since the Krendall invaded Earth. We were caught unaware and unprepared, and we paid the price. We have toiled to get to a point where we could strike back at the very heart of our enemy, and today is that day. Together, we have pushed them back to their main stronghold. Together, we have overcome every challenge and threat posed to us. "It has not been an easy road, many furs have died, trying to see this day. We must do all we can to make sure this is the last bloodshed of the war against the Krendall. It has been said that freedom isn't free, that it takes the blood of countless lives to achieve. I say we have paid that cost in full. We just need to make them see that we are willing to spill our own blood to win back our freedom, and not just for us, but for every fur on Earth. "Just over this hill stands the fortress the Krendall call their home on Earth. We can end this war here and now. I will not force any of you into battle, but if you will join me in battle today, we can achieve victory, glory, and most of all, freedom! Never in the history of this planet has there been a fight so desperate, so epic, and so just as this. "This will not be an easy fight. They have made us pay dearly for every scrap of land that we have won, and are continuing to make us pay to keep them. Their defenses only get stronger the closer we get. I know they have been saving some particularly nasty surprises for us, but I also know that we can overcome them, for we are fighting not just for us, not just for our freedom, not just for our planet, but for every fur that has lived, every fur that is alive today, and every fur yet to see the light of day. If the Krendall want this planet, they will see hell first!" At the end of the speech, a load roar of cheers and battle cries ring from more than 20,000 throats, many of them raising fists or weapons into the air. (I'm impressed.) I'm surprised. I didn't know I had something like that in me. (I always knew you were a born leader.) I telepathically signal the artillery crews to begin their assault. Some fifty field guns fill the air with shells and loud rapport, along with more than a hundred furs that send bolts of energy streaking across the sky. A few seconds later, explosions rise from the ground over the hill, shaking the very earth under my footpads. Another volley from the artillery rings out, the deafening sound almost music to my war-worn ears. While the second wave of artillery is still in the air, I send to every fur in the army that had gathered, {For victory, for dignity, for FREEDOM!!} I turn and lead the main charge over the hill. The scene that greets me is one that I will never forget. The fields seems to writhe with an eerie beauty of the black and gray armor of the suits. Where the artillery had struck the valley lay still, the life taken from that spot. Behind this moving mass of soldiers stands a sinister, black wall constructed of concrete and steel. It is hard to see beyond the wall for the force field that has been erected is distorting the air, but I can still make out the three spires of the main fortress, a hundred yards behind the walls of flesh and stone. I know from the intelligence reports that atop each precipice stands a cannon, and they can reach beyond the outer wall, but as long as their force field stands, we have little to fear from the cannons, as they cannot pierce the barrier. Emelia, this may very well be our last battle together. (I know.) Thank you for being there with me. (And thank you for letting me be here.) Will you lend me your power? (What power?) The power and strength to see this through to the end. (You already have it, but if you want more, you have mine.) Thank you once more, and may we both see the end of this day, free citizens once again. (That would be fine by me.) As I run down the other side of the hill towards the closest throng of suits, I notice lancets of energy flying towards the hill. So this is why they were saving those special suits. I send a message to the army to raise shields to full. Most furs react in time to prepare, but some either ignore the warning or do not have strong enough shields, as the energy crashes into our forces. The ones who could not defend themselves do not even scream, they simply fall to the ground, lifeless. We continue on, undeterred from our goal. I am one of the first to reach the Krendall forces, and I immediately make my presence known. I have two swords of energy slashing though every suit I can manage, letting my momentum from running down the hill carry me through the enemy lines. These suits don't seem to have any abilities, or at least no means of shielding themselves from my blades. A few beams of laser energy light up the air next to my head, but I don't flinch, I have had too many close calls to be scared of them anymore. I do start to crouch though. Just because I am no longer scared of almost being hit by a laser beam doesn't mean I don't want to get hit. I hear cheers coming from around me. I chance a look around to see many furs cheering and whooping while dealing with the suits around them. I try to find the source of such rejoicing so early in the battle and I find that the barrier surrounding the fortress has dissipated. I do not feel joy, instead a sense of dread fills my body. They must be planning on using their cannons against us, and these suits are just cannon fodder. {INCOMING!} goes across all the minds of every fur in the area, I am not sure if it is my signal, Emelia's, or some other fur, but I don't care. I put as much energy as I can into my shields as the first shells leave the barrels of the cannonade above the fortress. Mere heartbeats later, hell is visited upon the valley once more. Whole groups of suits and furs are engulfed in flames and shrapnel. The cries of the dying are drowned in the deafening explosions. One shell flies just inches overhead before exploding several feet behind me. I am stunned as I fly through the air, uncontrolled, over the heads of countless suits. Eighty feet later, I land on three suits, which are dematerialized by my shielding, which not only kept me alive through the blast, but survived long enough to see me safely to the ground. The ringing in my ears only getting louder as more explosions erupt throughout the Krendall lines. I realize that I am close to the rear of the main body of the suits, the blast bringing me ever closer to my ultimate goal. I am not there yet, however. I still have thirty feet of suits in my way, not to mention the wall, and the open area behind it. I could try to go back through the Krendall lines and meet up with the resistance forces, or I could press on and try to get into the fortress. (They can take care of themselves, there is little you could do for them.) I guess. I make sure my shields are still up and I ready a blast of energy to take down as many of the suits standing between me and the outer wall as possible. While I am charging the energy, several suits raise their arms, palms out. The charge completes as beams of energy streak towards me. I loose the ray I had charged upon the suits in front of me, which also acts to stop several beams headed for me. My shields stop more blasts from ripping through my flesh as the ray clears a path in front of me. I run forward, bringing up two blades and putting more energy into my shields. I follow in the wake of my ray of energy for more than twenty feet, until it finally stops at the last line of suits, which are braced against the assault of the energy ray, but not for 200 pounds of angry, flailing flesh. I topple two suits, our shields colliding. I let my momentum carry me over their bodies and towards the closing gates of the outer wall, as I tumble, seemingly out of control. I get to my feet, making a mad dash towards the gate. I see beams of energy strike the wall ahead of me, and feel the drain of my shields that are behind me. I make it through the large steel doors with inches to spare. The din of battle is silenced behind the stout wall. Faced by the eerie silence of the open ground stretched out beyond me, I feel unnerved. (I would say this is a bit too quiet, but that would be an understatement.) Not to mention a cliché. (Whatever. So what's the plan?) I know that the suits and cannons aren't their only defense. I am thinking mines, maybe anti-personnel gun emplacements. (If they have guns, I think they would have used them by now.) They could be waiting until they could get me in a crossfire. (Well, is there any use standing here, arguing about it?) I didn't know we were arguing, but no, there is no use. I walk forward, again, putting as much energy into my shields as I can afford. The eerie silence only growing in depth with each step. The closer I get to the fortress, the higher it looms overhead. With every step, I expect an explosion or gunfire, and with every step I am only met with the soft crunch of my boots on dirt. (What are you doing?) What? (Why are you walking?) I should be running? (Nooo, flying.) I suppose that would reduce the risk of mines. (Of course, and you get to the fortress faster.) It has been so long since I last flew, I have some trouble taking off. Once I can get the underused muscles in my chest to beat my wings enough to get me airborne, it all comes back. The rush of being in the air, the minute wing adjustments to keep me level and trim, even keeping my muzzle shut to prevent any bugs from flying down my gullet. I quickly return my mind to the task at hand, which is to get inside the fortress. The surface of which seems to be made entirely out of steel, no windows or vents to enter through. I can only see one way in from this side, the door. I decide to fly around the fortress, to see if there are any other options than the obvious. After making two full circles around the fortress without finding anything, no entrances, no guards, no security at all, I decide that the door is my only option, no matter how stupid of an idea it seems. I land in front of the door, expecting alarms or gunfire, and again the experience fails to meet those expectations. (This is just way too easy.) We are not in the door yet. (But with all of their resistance outside of the wall, why did they not have anything past it?) Maybe they thought that the suits and the wall are enough. (If they would think that, then they deserve to be beaten.) Seeing no handles or keypads or even locks, I push on the door. Surprisingly, it opens with a quiet whir. I step inside to total blackness, and the door closes behind me, snapping shut. The distinct sound of a lock sliding into place cuts through the thick silence. (Well, here's your trap.) I wasn't planning on leaving so soon anyhow. I look around, my eyes adjusting to the darkness. After a few minutes, I notice that the room is actually being lit up, albeit gradually, as the walls are the same color as the wall or the fortress. The Krendall must really like their dark colors. My guess is that the room takes up the entirety of the first floor, and part of the second, of the main tower. I walk on, looking for any signs of where the top brass would be. It's about then that I realize that there is a chair sitting on a raised dais at the far end of the room. The chair has a spotlight trained on it, and it is facing away from where I am standing. This looks awfully familiar... "So glad you could make it, Kevin." A voice cuts through the air, reverberating off of the walls. "So glad you invited me. Sorry I took so long to RSVP. Hope you don't mind, but I brought some friends." "Really? Oh, you mean the resistance. They are of no consequence." "No consequence? They have as much power as I do." "Please, we both know that isn't true." "Even so, they will get through that wall, and then this fortress will fall." "I don't think so, even if they get past the outer wall, they will never touch this fortress with their undeserving hands." After the voice says this, a screen appears in the air above the chair, showing what looks like the courtyard that I passed through, only now it is filled with suits. Whoever I am talking to is right, its doubtful the resistance would be able to get through that. "So you purposefully set the way for me to get in here?" "Yes, I thought that was pretty clear." "Why?" "You still haven't figured it out?" Maybe this will help. "You?" (I don't like this.) "Yes, I have tried to get you here from the start. I have made sure you survived, intact the entire time. I must admit, taking the remnant of your lover's mind into your own is a brave move." "But I still don't know why you want me here. Why you want me to fight you." "Because it is your destiny. -Our- destiny." As the voice says this, the chair turns, revealing a figure I once thought I knew. "No, it can't be.." "Yes, I am you, or rather who you could be." "I thought that was just a ploy." "I only ever spoke the truth to you. I would never lie to myself." "How could I ever become you?" "Simple. The power. The power over the furs who would torment you, over the governments that would ruin the lives of the citizens, over the furs that will bow to you, over life itself." "But life is something to be protected, not controlled." "You cannot protect what you cannot control." "But why invade earth? How?" "Ah, that is the important part, and the most interesting. I was once very much like you. A freedom fighter, fighting off the tyranny of the Krendall and a figure for all the furs of earth. Then, one day, I was captured, and brought to the Leader. I imagine you are feeling quite the same way I did back then, finding out that I am the leader. No one knows how many times this has happened, or even if there truly is a number, but Kevins have been going back in time for countless times. I saw that fighting destiny is futile. I was and am destined to be the leader of the Krendall and take over the earth. There was only one problem. The Krendall had taken over the Earth already. "This is the best part. I had to back in time, to a time before the Krendall invaded, and invade the Earth. Why? To make sure that I would gain the powers necessary to unite the planet against the Krendall. I even know that by abandoning the resistance, and taking up the mantle of the leader of the Krendall, I ensured that wars were well and truly ended in the world. And the same will continue to happen, ad infinitum, because destiny decrees it." "You are sick in the head." "I know, it has been stated as one of my finer traits." "But what kind of destiny is it to slaughter millions of furs? There must be a better way!" "There isn't. This has gone on for ages, each Kevin creating a new one. Each time, some fur goes back to make sure that what must be done is done." "Some fur? I thought I am the one to go back." "Time doesn't like to repeat itself exactly. Sometimes, we don't like what we have to do, and either kill ourselves, or worse, get killed. Sometimes, we don't want to go back, instead sending a minion, or friend. In any case, an invasion force is sent back in time to ensure the continuation of the cycle." "And what if I say no?" "Simple, I kill you, and then decide whether or not to go back again myself or send someone else." "So it's join you or die?" "At the core of the matter, yes." "Well, you can try to kill me, I would like to see you try." "But that wouldn't harm my plans any. Even if you killed me, the suits would still fight. And I can almost guarantee that some fur will take the technology back, and the cycle will continue." "I won't let that happen." "But this is your destiny. If the I hadn't invaded earth, you wouldn't have gotten your powers, and you would probably be in some boring box somewhere, doing menial, pointless drone work. All of your potential would have been lost, and you wouldn't have gotten the girl." "Emelia? She wouldn't have left me." (Of course.) "So, Emelia is her name this time? When I went through all this, her name was Cassandra." Cassandra? "In fact, that seems to be the major difference this time around, this Emelia wasn't a part of my class. No matter, she would have left you anyway. No girl is ever truly faithful. They never really want you, they either want your power, money, or influence." "SHUT UP!" I launch a beam with that statement, which he easily deflects. "Ooh, a soft spot. You must have known it would happen." "She's dead because of you! How DARE you slander her!" "Well, that is all I have to say. You should think this over carefully, unless you want to join with me already, then you should just let me know." "I will NEVER join you!" "Are you sure about that? Never is a long time." "I could never work with Emelia's killers." "Pity, you have such potential." He says, standing from his chair. A cloak flows from his shoulders, the same black as our scales, his black shirt and pants almost making his body disappear into the walls of the room, his piercing blue eyes and white teeth shining brightly. "But I must admit, I have looked forward to a good fight. Please don't disappoint." (Kevin, be careful.) I will, but I wont hold back. (He can do everything you can do, I think.) I would expect so. Although he could use his powers differently, he has had more time to train. (I don't want you to die.) But I can't let him live, even at the cost of my own life. (But if you die, he wins, even if you kill him in the process.) I just have to make him stop the suits before I finish him. Should be easy enough. He opens up with a ball of red energy in his hands, which he splits into two. One becomes a blade in his right hand, the other he uses to push off against the dais to fly at me. I put up my shields, a sword forming in both of my hands. I block his charge, but he brings up a knee, which is shielded, and catches me in the head. The blow is transferred through the shield to my skull, flooring me. I stand back up, but just in time to catch his fist with my muzzle. "What's wrong, Kevin? You can do better." "I was gaging you. I wanted to see how hard you hit." I bring my left hand to his solar plexus, but he teleports out of the way. I use my right hand to send a beam of energy behind me, and am greeted by a grunt. Without turning around, I step back, bring my right fist around by my head. I must have been too slow, since he is able to teleport away, again. I take a blade in my left hand a spin around, ducking down at the same time. I don't want him getting behind me. I am not concerned with above me, and a weight falls on me, pinning me to the ground. "Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. You should have realized by now that there are three dimensions in any fight, and furs rarely look up. I expected better from you. I wouldn't even want you to join me." (Kevin!) I know, this doesn't look good. (I have an idea.) I'm open to suggestions. (You will need some space.) Give me two seconds. "Well, sorry to disappoint." I quip, teleporting from beneath him. I reappear on the other side of the chair, behind the dais. Alright, whats your plan? (You know the power you said you wouldn't use?) The one that steals life energy? (Yes, that one. It wouldn't surprise me if he could do that too.) Get to the stuff that I don't know already. (Well, maybe you should use it.) I swore to you that I wouldn't. Not even to save my life. (But what about the resistance? I have been digging around up here, and I think I have come up with a new way to use it.) How? (Well, it would let you sweep across the entire planet, destroying any Krendall technology.) When did you come up with this plan? (A few days ago.) And you felt like keeping this a secret because...? (Well, in order for you to target only Krendall technology, you need to spread your consciousness with the energy.) I don't like where this is going. (Not to mention the energy costs for such a large area. In order to achieve the control and energy needed, you would need to consume yourself with the power.) So I die to save the world, and the past, from the Krendall? (Basically.) Would you be fine with that? (I died four years ago, the only reason I am still here is because of you. This is your decision, not mine.) I am watching the other Kevin while talking with Emelia, and notice that he has found me. I decide that the best outcome I can hope for is to stop the Krendall, even if it means I die. I put up the strongest shields I can, and focus on my powers. I can feel him trying to get at me, but the shields are unusually strong, and I do not even feel the force of his blows being transferred to me, and there is very little drain on my energy. (You're welcome for the extra shields.) I thought telepathy was your only power. (It is, but I can put my energy into your shields. No need to hold back anymore.) I guess you're right. I can feel the energy building, but this time, there is no rush. I feel excruciating pain, but a sense of peace and tranquility. I feel like this is truly what I was born to do, that everything I have done until now was just leading up to this one action. I feel the energy leaving my body, just as I feel the energy gathering, and hear the screams of the dragon on the floor. I can feel the energy itself, the energy coming from dust mites in the air, insects in the grass, and from the thousands of suits outside the fortress. I have gathered an enormous amount of energy, but I also have eaten through most of mine. I can feel the life being drained from me, my hands and feet have lost all feeling. The dragon on the floor has stopped screaming. I look down and notice a bright red, almost white, light radiating from my body. (Kevin.) Yeah? (Thank you.) For what? I'm killing us. (But you wouldn't give in. They wanted you to be like him, and you never gave in to your power. You stayed you, even when you wanted revenge. I know you want to see the Earth free again, and I am sorry you can't.) You don't need to apologize. I thank you for never leaving my side, never doubting me. Without you, I might have become him. Like he said, you are the key difference. You made me into the dragon I am. I love you. (I love you too.) I let the energy flow out in a wave, radiating in a circle from where I was standing. I feel myself being taken with the wave. I see my body, lifeless on the floor, as the floor and walls are being dissolved by the wave that I have become. I spread over the plain, and over the bodies of the suits of which I had taken their lives, watching them become dust. I wash over the furs fighting outside of what used to be the wall. At first they run, but they cannot escape me. I do not harm them, but their guns follow the way of the fortress and the suits. I leave every fur and each lade of grass intact. I spread out further, over cities, mountains, oceans. Where ever I pass, any trace of the Krendall is swept away, leaving only the furs that rightfully inhabit the planet. As I finish, I feel exhausted. I have done much today, and now I must rest. A young human boy steps off of a yellow school bus, in front of a red brick building. The white letters on the side of the three story building say St. A's elementary. He walks to the glass door, readjusting the bookbag on his shoulder. Today is the first day of school, and today he sees a girl he never noticed in the school before. He doesn't know why, but he likes her. He is nervous, but he walks up to her. "Hi, I'm Kevin, in Mrs. Morris' class." "Hello Kevin, my name is Emelia, we are in the same class. Want to be friends?"
