Suzaku is the third eldest of the four cardinal gods, as guardian of the Southern Throne, he held the season of Summer and the elements of Stone and Fire as his domains.

A representative of the passionate, he is often considered the patron deity of muses, and strikes inspiration in the hearts of mortal and supernatural alike, his regard for life is emphasized on the fact that he, of all four of the gods, has a life cycle determined by time and fate.

Every one-thousand years, the phoenix's life is set to end, when that occurs, like the bird in the legends he is set alight upon a funerary pyre and rescinds to ash. It is at least 1000 years more before he is able to be reborn, in that time his duties are shared by his siblings, although in recent times his death was harried by involvement with the fallen god, Koukuen, and its unclear as to when (or if) he will be reborn.

The most compassionate and emotional of the four, Suzaku held a love of life that was unmatched by any of his siblings. Humans fascinated him, their short life spans and determination and perseverance even in the face of adversity inspired him into 'helping' them at certain times. Much to the chagrin of his siblings.

Firey tempered and passionate, he was often seen in practice or sparring with either one of his siblings, subordinates, or other gods. Easily the type to laugh as much as he would be quick to anger, it was never easy to discern his mood from one day to another, and the only one that seemed to hold infinite patience with him was Genbu.

The loss of Suzaku was a significant blow during the War of Reflections, the world's seasons were turned upside down and winter was ushered in far earlier than was predictable, Genbu was thought to have mourned the phoenix's death for decades, leading to a tumultuous break that caused floods, famine, and hardship upon the earth, most of which was written in the annals of history, evidence of which can be seen through museum artifacts of the last Ice Age.
