Genbu is the eldest of the four Cardinal gods that exist as part of the council of Nine in the world of Gens?.

As the first born of the four, he is considered the wisest, and is often the most sought after in terms of fellowship and ritualistic prayer, a deity of nature, his domain presides over the wintry north and his season is, respectively, Winter. His element(s) are considered to be Water, and Wood, representing his place as a forest god.

Although he very rarely takes on the form of his nature persona (Kirin/Chimera), he is often depicted as an ancient looking stag with a crown of multi-point antlers and snow-white coat with silver hooves, a long, lion-like tail and a dragon's face. Although he can be frightening when angered, he is generally even tempered and hard to agitate.

There is speculation that he at one point in time held a romantic relationship, or feelings towards his younger brother, Suzaku, keeper of the Southern Throne. However the First War claimed Suzaku's life and left the remaining three gods having to upkeep his duties until his rebirth.

Genbu personally took on the responsibilities of both the Summer and Winter courts, relying on the aid of both elemental and fae/sprite spirits to keep the flow of time moving steadily along.

He often speaks of the First Born (Creator, Destroyer, Keeper also known as Dreamer, Wakener, Guardian) the way a child would when missing a parent, at one point in time, he and his siblings had direct contact with the three though their voices have suddenly become silenced.

Prophecy states that their 'parents', the First Born, will be returned to existence in the form and shape of 'flesh borne' children and it is speculated that Yuuhi Enma, and (hir) twin sibling, Itsuki Enma are the reincarnated forms of Rune and Key, the Dreamer/Creator and Wakener/Destroyer. The truth behind this theory however is only known to the Realmwalkers Avalore, and Touya.

Genbu tends to take on the role of guide to the behaviors and etiquette of the Gods, often advising younger or newborn deities of their roles and place within the celestial hierarchy.

He does however tend to keep many secrets, and prefers the ways of the old world in comparison to the new, he does not like to interfere with the workings and machinations of Fate and Destiny, and often tries to discourage others from doing so, lest the balance and path lain before them by the First Born be torn asunder.

He is fiercely protective of his onmyouji (summoner), and as a shikigami his powers include gravitational manipulation and shield casting (defensive spells). He is often known to enjoy playing G? or Shogi, and stalwartly serves the mortal descendants of the Enma clan, including Satoshi, Kyohiro, and Kaoru (deceased), and subsequently Itsuki and Yuuhi as a protector God (shikigami).

He is the gatekeeper and jailer of Koukuen, also known as the "Fallen God" and created the chains that bound him with the help of the Nordic Pantheon (similar to the rope used to bind Fenrir.) He has kept careful watch and vigilance over Koukuen's imprisonment, as his actions taken against the mortals caused both the fall of a human empire, and the death of Suzaku.

Firm-handed, kind-hearted, and a tad naive towards the workings of the modern world, his values and morals stem from a time long set back in antiquity.
