The beginning
#1 of The Beginning
A story of the journey of a young man and his companions, and their bond of friendship.
It was raining. Hard. The kind of rain that causes floods and ruins houses. The type of rain that sends people running indoors. And there was no end in sight. Just like the highway Elend was drearily shuffling down. But that suited him just fine. He was in no mood for sunshine and blue skies. How could he be after the day he'd had? No, rain was just fine. No end in sight, no where to go. Just like him. Left by his parents with just enough money to survive for a week and only the clothes on his back to keep him warm. As he walked, he reflected on the events leading up to this.

Elend slouched against the wall in the hallway, idly watching other students as he waited for class to start. Labeled as problem child, the sixteen year-old boy had just finished a meeting with his guidance counselor. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to deal with violence other Elend's preferred method of choice, violence. As usual, the meeting was just an excuse to talk his ear off about making good decisions. Nothing new. As he waited for class, Elend saw the school bully, Francis, corner a younger boy and push him against the lockers. Great. He's at it again. thought Elend. Not one to let kids have their way, Elend made his way over and put his hand on Francis's shoulder.
"Hey, leave him alone." he yelled. "Quite being a douchebag."
Startled, Francis turned around and look down at the six foot one boy. "Mind your own business. Me and my friend here have some things to attend to."
The smaller boy grabbed him by the arm and threw him across the floor, where he hit his head and started bleeding. Damn.
2 hours later, Elend was expelled from school and getting chewed out by his parents.
An hour after that, he was walking down a road in the rain. _ This the world we live in._ He thought bitterly. A place that refuses to listen to reason. Abandoned by family and society, he stumbled along, with no destination in mind and no hope in sight.

Elend walked along, unsure of what to do. He had no home to return to and no place to go. Nothing to do but go forward. Unsure of his path, he resolved to take it one step at a time. As he walked he began to hear a whining sound that got louder the farther he walked. Eventually, he saw a small form huddled on the ground in front of him. Approaching slowly, he softly asked " Are you okay?" Immediately the noise stopped, and the shape started to stand. Elend heard a soft, obviously feminine voice.
"w-w-who are you?".
Elend crept closer. "My name is Elend. Are you okay? What's your name?"
The form appeared to crawl towards the curious boy. "I'm alright I guess. My name is Fenra."
As it spoke the shape passed under a streetlamp, revealing its appearance.
As Elend saw it, he jumped. "You're a Pokemon!" he said, stumbling. What is it doing here? he wondered.
"Yes, a Houndour to be exact." the shivering pokemon replied, not unkindly. "If you don't mind, could you continue on your way and leave me alone?"
Elend frowned, clearly taken aback by the soaked canine's attitude. " Why do you want me to leave? Is there someone you are waiting for?"
"No," the pokemon said irritably, "No, I don't think anyone wants to meet me. Or even wants me, for that matter." The Houndour began to walk away.
She's just like me, Elend realized, I can't just let her die out here! "Wait!" The boy cried. "If you have nowhere to go, will you come with me? I'm the same as you. Left all alone with no one to care for me. Since we have no one else, we should take care of each other."
The Houndour stopped and turned around. "Why do you care what happens to me? What's in it for you? Look at me! I'm too small to fight! I can't help you at all! It doesn't matter what I want. If I can't contribute, you will just get rid of me like all the others!" she sobbed.
I see. So that's why she's afraid thought Elend. He placed his hand on the pokemon's head. "Don't worry about your size, there are other ways to fight than just brute force. And as for what I'm getting out of it, I think that all of your problems are halved when you have someone to share them with. As long as you stay by my side, I think that we can accomplish anything we set our minds to."
As he finished, the rain stopped and the sun started shining through the clouds. Perfect. Just what I needed. "See? said Elend, "Things are already looking brighter!"
Visibly cheering up, Fenra chuckled. "If you promise not to make puns like that one I would be happy to accompany you. Where are you going?"
Looking towards the sky, Elend raised his head.
"I'm going to change the world."
