Fox Tales 5

Jacob sat in his office staring at through the wall. He couldn't concentrate every time he sat down to focus on his writing he would get distracted. This didn't feel like the writer's block that he had after his wife left. He shifted and grunted at the silence of the house. Talia... he pulled aside the curtains that looked into Janice's yard. There through the window was his daughter playing with Janice and her son, Max.
Jacob hadn't really talked to Janice in couple weeks. Pleasantries and thanks for when one would pick up the other's child was all that they had said to each other. A week ago she had asked Jacob to watch her son while she went out. She hadn't mentioned that it had been a date, not that he would have said no if she had. She was still a damn good looking woman but he was pretty sure that, their possible relationship had been destroyed. He didn't fault her for moving on; life is all about being hurt and then moving on.
The proverbial light clicked on in his mind. Jacob spun around and leaned over the key board and started typing furiously. Time passed as he ignored everything that he had planned out, the evidence of the discarded plan hanging on the wall. He felt something tugging on his shirt, but he couldn't recognize it. The click-click of his typing drowned out the sound of the phone and then the knock on the door. He smiled as the story began to coalesce in his mind.
"Jacob... Jacob..." He kept typing his mind wrapped up in the creation of his own world. "Jacob!!!" A paw grabbed his shoulder and Jacob was forcibly called back from his own world. He spun around as the paw shook him; his arm came around hitting his drink and sending it flying. "GOD DAMN IT!!!" Jacob looked up and saw noticed Janice's face.
"Oh shit," Jacob whispered. Janice glared at Jacob, her paws no longer on his shoulder instead they were on her dress. She was earring and had only enough make-up on to draw out the beauty of her eyes and fur. He let his eyes move down her body, the dress was a blue satin one piece. It shimmered and shone in the light of the lamp behind Jacob, well most of it did exact the spot that her paws held up away from her body. A growing stain of coffee removed the sheen from part of the dress.
Jacob winced and looked passed her. Talia and her cousin sat in the living room no longer watching the TV. Their little eyes were trying to look into the study. Talia's eyes were large and glistening with unshed tears and Max's face was flushed and his fur was standing on end with, his teeth were bared.
Janice grabbed the sliding door and slammed it shut. "Jacob, What the fuck is wrong with you?!" She leaned forward and pointed at claw him. "My date is suppose to be here in ten minutes. Didn't you say that you were going to come get the kids almost an hour ago? Is this your way to stop me from going on a date? This is bullshit I took care of Talia all day so that you could get some work done, and you spent most of the day staring out the window." She growled and turned her head, the skin under her fur was flushed and it was easy to tell with her fur standing up.
"Listen Janice I am sorry I got in the zone and lost track of time."
"Yeah Jacob, I get it. Watch the kids. I will be back in the morning." She turned and opened the door and crossed over to the two kids. She hugged them both and then kissed her son. She whispered to them both and then stood giving Jacob one more glare before walking out of the house.
Jacob turned and looked out of the window. Janice walked down the drive way and up to a car. She leaned over and smiled into the window. She smiled and laughed into the car saying something to the person inside. She turned away from the car and flicked up her tail pulling the dress tight and giving a view of her ass to the car. It took Jacob a moment to notice that her eyes were on him and she walked into the house.
The car pulled into the drive way and a large wolf stepped out of the car. His body was heavy with muscle; his fur was a grayish white. He spent away from the car and slowly walked up to the house. Light from inside the house played down along the grass. A silhouette of a lithe form was inside of the light before the bulk of the wolf blocked it and then the light vanished.
Jacob grunted when he saw the light in Janice's room come on her form move behind the curtain and then the lights went out. "I guess they will be staying in." He muttered to himself and then left the study. He looked at the two cubs, which stopped playing when he came out of the study.
Talia smiled up at him and ran over to give him a hug, "Daddy come look to see what I drew." Jacob smiled and picked up his daughter and stepped over the where the two were drawing and sat down putting Talia in to his lap. She picked up the piece of paper and showed it to him. The paper contained a mix of colors that he couldn't discern. She smiled and laughed, "Do you like it?"
"Of course I like it." He laughed and nuzzled her head, "what about you what did you draw?"
"Stuff it." The boy said and stood up walking away from Jacob taking his paper with him. The boy sat down on the couch and looked away from Jacob and Talia. He looked at the paper and then up at Jacob and then crumpled the paper. The cub looked at the TV ignoring the two other in the room with him.
Jacob breathed softly and hugged Talia softly. "You hungry?"
"No auntie cooked us macaroni and cheese."
"She did? That is good she makes the best Mac and cheese." Jacob smiled and looked at his nephew. "Would either of you like some ice cream?" Talia's face brightened and she started bouncing yelling for ice cream. Max's ears flicked around even though he hadn't looked at Jacob. "Come on kits we're gonna go to Cold Slab."
Talia bounded up from Jacob's lap and ran over to Max and pulled him off the couch, "Come on, come on, come on." Max yelped as he fell off the couch and then stood up and ran after Talia. Jacob stood and walked after the kits and grabbed his key. He helped the two buckle into the children's seats.
He got the SUV going and pulled out of the driveway and took off to the ice cream parlor. Jacob enjoyed the item with the kids while they all had ice cream. Max started to relax and enjoy himself, his anger cooled off by the joy of Talia. Both of the kits got seconds of their joy when he let them get more.
It was ten thirty when Jacob pulled back into his drive way. The wolf's car was gone, and Janice's place was dark. Jacob took the kits into the house and dropped them into Talia's bed. The two kits were so tired that they never woke as he transported them. He pulled out a pair of Talia's PJ's and then looked in the closet. Max didn't have any of his PJ's. Jacob sighed and shook his head, he had forgot that he took those back to Janice's.
He let the kits lay there as he left getting the spare keys to Janice's house and walked over to it. He turned the knob, and stopped with a curious look as the door opened. Jacob stepped forward and reached behind the door picking up the bat. He slowly walked further into the house. Checking the first floor, Jacob found nothing. He started up stairs and walked down the hall. He knew the last place he had seen Janice was her room.
His paw turned the knob and pushed the door in. Jacobs jaw dropped along with the bat and he scrabbled for his phone. He quickly dialed 911, moving quickly his paw touched Janice's throat. "Yes please come too498 James street. She is dying..." His paw felt the faint thump of her pulse. "I don't know... ok up stairs at the end of the hall."
He looked over Janice; blood matted her fur over her chest, stomach, and crotch, her eyes were swollen closed, just barely breathing. Jacob whined as he looked at her face covered in bruises, a small trail of blood came from her nose and mouth. Jacob grabbed the covers and pressed down over the largest wound. He began crying as Janice whimpered. Time once again became warped, it took forever for the EMT to get there, then he could stop looking at her when he was pulled out of the way and they started taking care of her.
A paw touched his shoulder and someone was talking to him, he pushed the paw away and followed after Janice after they took her out of the room and the house. He tried to follow her in the ambulance. The paw was back keeping him from entering, "Sir, I need to talk to you."
Jacob looked at the face that the paw belonged to. It was a small dog in police uniform. "Yes?"
"What happened here sir? How do you know the victim?"
"She is my Sister-in-law. She was going on a date."
"Can you describe the man she was with?" The ambulance roared away the siren blasting. The officer pulled Jacob's attention back to him.
"Wolf, powerfully built, gray fur I think. Is she going to be alright?"
"I don't know sir."
"Where are they taking her?"
"Daddy???" Talia and Max stood at the front door. Max looked at Jacob and the blood on him and then to the people going into the house. The cub's face contorted in pain and began running to the house.
"MAMA!?!" The boy blitzed into the house avoiding the paws of those trying to catch him. Jacob chased after the boy and caught him just as the boy reached the top of the stairs. "MAMA!" Jacob whimpered to the cub that he couldn't go into her room. Max though could see the blood on Janice's bed. The cub wailed and started thrashing, "What did you do? What did you do to momma?"
"Max, listen to me I want you to go down and stand with Talia..." The cub tried to push away from Jacob, "MAX!" The cub stopped and looked to Jacob, "Go stand with Talia and in a moment we are going to the hospital. That is where your momma. Ok... Listen Talia is scared and I want you to protect her and keep her safe. I am just going to pack some stuff." Max nodded, sniffing he turned to go back down the stairs.
Jacob stood and pulled a suit case out of the closet and pulled a bunch of Max's cloths and stuffed them into the case and then zipped it closed. He took the clothes and took them back to his house. The dog followed him continuing to ask him questions. Jacob grabbed his keys and went to the SUV. "Cubs come." He quickly buckled the two into the seats. After shutting the door next to Talia Jacob turned to the dog. "Listen I know you are doing your job but the cub in there is hers."
He walked up to the driver's door and looked back at the cop. "Listen, I told you a wolf, Grayish fur, tall and big. They were supposed to go out, but an accident happened and they were late, I don't know what happened after that. I took the kids to the ice cream parlor. Now that is all I can think of now if you want more it will have to be later." Jacob got in the car, and pulled out the dog pointed to a motorcycle unit who nodded.
The bike pointed to Jacob and escorted him to the hospital ignoring the lights and the speed limit. They reached the emergency room and Jacob had the two cubs sit down while he went to the window. "I am here about Janice's Whight." The attendant nodded.
"Relation?"
"Brother-in-law."
"I am sorry si."
"That..." Jacob pointed to Max, "Is her son, I am her next of kin."
"Ahh yes sir. She is in surgery. I am sorry but, I don't have any other information at this time."
"Thank you," Jacob turned and sat down between the two cubs and hugged them close. Both of them cried into Jacob. Jacob watched the clock and counted hours between each second.
Several hours of waiting had tired out the cubs that were now sleeping in the waiting room under a small blanket. Jacob looked up as a doctor entered the room with a clip board and sighed, "Sir..." He motioned Jacob out of the room away from the cub. "I have news..."
