Chapter 2

On instinct I draw my gun and run out the back door. Arnold rallies everyone else to follow. As I run out the door another shot rigs out followed by someone yelling "stay back or I will shoot you."

I was afraid that the man would follow through with his threat so I ducked behind my car's bumper. After a few tense seconds of looking through the mirror, I poke my head up over the trunk only to have a bullet hit the window of my car. I mutter a few curses under my breath before clearing my throat to shout.

"Look sir we are here to help you. My name is Aaron and I am a detective with the FBI. So why don't you throw the gun out where I can see it and we can talk about what happened in the house."

I only hear silence as the man thinks about my proposal. After what felt like an eternity of waiting I hear the clatter of the gun hitting the ground and the sounds of the man crying. As I get up to walk to the garage where the man is I holster my gun. After a few seconds of walking the crying stops so I pick up the speed a little.

As I approach the garage I see the gun on the ground outside the door so I just barely peak around to see if I can find the man. What I see makes me give a sigh of disappointment. Unknown to me as I was walking to the man he grabbed a piece of broken glass and slit his own throat. When Arnold arrives with the rest of the group I break the bad news to them then call for a coroner. After I hang up I go back out for the gun.

"Well it looks like we found our murder weapon." I say as I hold up the gun and compare it to the shell casing that I found earlier in the house.

"Aaron you got to come see this!!!" Arnold shouts from near the body.

What I see sends a major chill up my spine as I read the home address used for the return address. The bastard is using Arnold's home address as the return address on the envelope. At this point Arnold is now holding up the letter that was inside.

The letter is typed like the rest of the information. The letter is a standard threat letter against the man, although there is a symbol on the bottom of the letter that catches my eye. It's a shield with what looks like a family crest on it made out of gold leaf.

"This man must have some serious money if he is using gold leaf on a letter that is supposed to be destroyed." I continue to look the letter over when Shirley calls me to tell me that all the victims received a letter with the home addresses of the entire task force use in the return address line.

That bothered me most of all because that meant that our killer had access to our payroll information or he was bribing someone with that clearance. All I knew was that I had to find out which one it was without tipping him off. Although if our killer had the money to throw away on a threat letter that was supposed to be destroyed, then he more than likely had the money to buy a high end computer and some good hacking software.

Then it hit me, if he has access to our payroll then he has access to our witness protection info. So I pull out my phone and call Shirley back.

"I need you to do me a huge favor. I need you to have my family move again and NOT put their locations into the system. And I need you to have the agents in charge of this contact me directly before anything happens."

Shirley takes a few minutes before saying that my request went through. After I hang up I get a phone call from my boss.

"Yes sir what can I do for you?"

"Well I have some news for you. I don't know if its good or bad so I will leave it up to you to decide. What I called to tell you is that you are getting a new rookie to train."

"But what about Arnold, he has been wanting a new rookie to train for a while now?" I ask as I walk outside so I can have some privacy.

"Don't worry about that, he will get the chance some day. But for now he has been reassigned closer to base because he has gotten himself into a little trouble."
