Coffee Beans
Hey all, this is a new story. My old series wasn't going anywhere so i'm writing it off as a bust. This one's gonna be something new to me: writing in the first person. Dunno how it'll turn out but anyways, here I go! enjoy and drop a comment if you have the time!
My eyes cracked open. It was 2:00 am. I was sweating in my fur. I had heard a lound smashing sound in the kitchen followed by someone whispering "shit" under their breath. My whole body began to quiver as slowly, i moved out from under the bedsheets to investigate. When i reached my bedroom door, i could hardly stand. The new, white door pushed open without so much of a creak. Why was i doing this, what was i going to do when i got in there with no weapons and wearing nothing but my underwear, tell him to go away or i'd give him a jolly good telling off? No. For some incomprehensible reason (unknown to me even now) i poked my head out my room and turned it to the right to pear into the kitchen. Relief. It was just derpy old Simon struggling with the coffee machine. " what are you doing up this early you numbskull?" i growled, rather annoyed that i had been surfaced at two in the morning. He was always a timid little thing, his orange fur always standing on end when i spoke. Pretty sure now that he was scared of me, i was quite intimidating. I am a tall whitw wolf. I have a moderately muscular build but nothing 'impressive'. The fox wasn't that much shorter than me but deffinately had more of a slender figure. "erm... well... i woke up and thought how i never get back to sleep after waking, so i sorta tried to make a coffee. dropped the cup." Indeed he had, there were sharp, transparent thorns littering the the floor. "hmpf, i'll get a brush..." I trailed off and returned quickly, dustpan and brush in paw.Quickly, I got to sweeping the nasty shards up off the floor and into the bin. "Ugh, I'm up now, gueess I'm making two coffees then." As i got to making the two drinks, i refleced on the strange bond the two of us had. Although both of us were wearing nothing but our fur and underwear there was no awkwardness, and yet he always seemed stiff like a board whenever he was around me. Gee I really ought to be less cold to him, I'm just a bit, you know, frosty with people. I can't help it it's the way I am. but anyway, back on topic. Hving made the coffees i let a small glup of vanilla flavoured syrup trickle into my glass. "You want anything in yours Si"
"um, could i get some o' that stuff please?"
He gestured to the syrup bottle that i had just used and so, I poured it in until he told me to stop. It took a surprisingly long time, he must have liked it sweet. After that there was silence. Awkward silence. Neither of us knew what to say or do next. Casually I offered to play CoD. I knew I'd win but it was fun non the less.
"Sure, I think I really ought to beat you this time though." What was that? did he just crack a smile? New thing thing for him to do when around me, he usually just looked at his foot paws or something, but he seemed almost confidant! The two of us walked through to the living room, all of about two steps, and plopped ourselves down on the sofa. It fealt freezing on my fur, the plasticy leather had been left idle in the freeze for hours so any warmth it had absorbed from yesterday was well and truly gone. We each grabbed a controller and began the war. Naturally, I opted for a sniper class; cold, reclusive, sharp, a bit like me. To my surprise, the fox also opted for a sniper class, only one of his own compilation.
"You don't normally go sniper Si."
"Yeah, I noticed how you always beat me. So I practised with your class then made one of my own."
"sneaky vulpine"
The waged a small war on each other until it became silly to continue. We had to take this party to the world. Once on live, there was no stopping us.
"Dude you died again! I will avenge you!" shouted Simon, not once breaking his gaze from the TV.
"Seven times?"
I chuckled at that small joke but he didn't seem to get it; went right over his head. Gosh i fealt like another coffee. So rather than respawning I retired to the kitchen and watched him play for a while. He seemed, comfortable. He seemed, like a different guy. He wasn't timid, he wasn't shy. He didn't hesitate to speak. I liked it. It was cool to have a roomie that I could actually hold a conversation with. Realising that I was staring, I walked over to the machine. I was a massive coffee nut so it was one of those indudtial machines that you see in calebrity's kitchens. Pulling out the pure coffee beans, I sniffed the air, allowing myself to be carried away by the strong sent. Exhaling deaply, I plonked the beans into the machine where they were ground up into pulp and creted the perfect espresso shot. I meandered back throught to the living room only to find that Si had quit the game and the TV was off. Curious I sat down next to him and asked what was wrong. No response, so I decided to delve in a bit deeper.
"Come on, it's not like I didn't notice that for the last few weeks you've been quiter than me, what's going on?"
"I... um... I..."
Obviously he was having troubles. What could be that bad that he couldn't tell me what was wrong. I know we weren't particularly close but we didn't keep secrets from each other... as far as I knew.
"Come on man, how can I help you if I don't know what's wrong eh?"
He was still looking the other way. I sighed and rose to leave when he blurted out "I like you!"
"huh? what?"
"I said, I.. I like you"
Realising what he just said my eyes widened. He immediately fixed his gaze to the floor and pinned his ears to the back of his head. What was this feeling that I was gripped by so suddenly, so harshly? What was it? Confusion? Uncomfortable? relief? was that it? I never had a thought like that in my life. I had never even considdered that possibility about my personality. But this was weird. I had just been told that a guy like me in a more than friendly way and it didn't bother me. In fact I was excited. What was I to do? What was I to do!?
