Chapter 1

It never gets easier no matter how long you do it. A perfect case is when you have to investigate the murder of a family of three including the nine year old daughter.

"It looks like our guy is killing again Aaron." Detective Arnold says as he walks into the room.

"I doubt it." I say with a sigh. "It's a match to the M.O. but he has never killed a kid, let alone this young."

The house still has all of its belongings and there is no sign of forced entry. It's ungodly similar to all the others. There is even the calling card saying 'Catch me if you can Detective Aaron.' Although when you look at the writing style it has a sort of rushed element to it.

"Well, if you say so Aaron." He says running a paw through his blonde head fur. "You are the expert after all."

There can't be any more truth to that statement, I have been chasing this guy for two and a half years now and haven't gotten a single good lead. It's almost as if he is taunting me. Every time I get a good suspect, he or she will disappear for a week or so. I always find their body with a clue to the next victim. It seems I am always too late.

There have been many times I have wanted to quit this case. I can never follow through because I want to nail this bastard so bad. I have even drafted a resignation letter only to have a message show up saying if I quit this case my family is next on the list. It scared the shit out of me when my brother got kidnapped. He was on his way home from getting a few groceries one day when a black van pulled up and he got knocked unconscious and drug into it.

"You still thinking about what happened to Gary, you know it wasn't your fault right?" Arnold is the only one who knows about the note from the killer, because he got a similar one saying that he better make sure I don't quit.

"Yes I still do think about it Arnold. Even though it's been a whole year since it happened, I still think about it." It still bothers me. I even placed my family in witness protection so I never have to worry about that happening again, but it still nags at me. I even have them change houses at random in hopes to keep the killer at bay. So far it's been working, but for how long is the big question.

As I was looking around for clues, I receive a text message from Karoo saying he wants to meet me at the local bar after I finished here. When I finished reading it I give a light chuckle as I think back as to how we met. We met while I was working a case in Australia. I was sent over there as part of a joint international man hunt for a serial rapist that started in the states and migrated to Australia in the span of a year. During the week that I was there we fell in love. About a year later he decided to surprise me by delivering me flowers. What he didn't tell me was that he would be making the actual delivery.
