Hi,

I'm just posting my first ever story here.

I was inspired by the 'life' that others created. I, just want to make a version of theirs. Here goes.

The rain battered my roof. The sound of rain was lulling me. Tempting me to sleep. I can't. I have to finish my work. It will be worth it in the end. For him. I'm only doing it for him. It has taken years of my life. Not sure if they are wasted. Maybe they were. For others it was. My purpose was to help life evolve. Sounds impossible. Wrong, I have 'some' success. Granted, the 'success' wasn't perfect, it's better than nothing. Just a few more hours.

I wake up with a gasp. That dream. I wish it would stop-. The failure. I can't fail him. That thought wade it all worth it. To prove the dream wrong. All of the pain I have gone through. I will do it. Anyways time to go to work. For the last time. I will complete what I started all those years ago. To have what I desire most. Nothing else I want.

'Prepare the gas chamber.' There is a shuffle of feet. After a few minutes the gas chamber is prepared. I become more anxious. 'If you need a minute is okay with me'. A man sturdy with muscle in front of me says with some sort of care in their voice. 'Dave, I'm fine. You of all people should know that.' I shake my head. No one knows. Their mistakes of trusting me. 'Wait! I have change my mind! I have to talk to him first!' I shouted, I can't not give him a warning. I love him too much to hurt him. I start to cry. No! Not the time. I can do this. I walk quickly down the corridor. I enter the room where he is. Captured. Stored. Like some sort of hostage. It hurts. He's too good for this. 'I'm doing this for you! Jake, you are the most important person in my life.' He runs straight for me and hugs me. He wraps his whole body against me. He whimpers. He thinks he's going to die. I won't let that happen. I start to cry. He collects a tear and looks at it. He understands. Only him. Ever since I saved him. From the monsters who tried to sell him to the circus. 'I will help you! All of your kind! I love you!. He grunts. He somehow hugs me tighter. 'You know I'm helping you.' He nods. He is the smartest one here. Not the scientists, not me. Him. Always him. 'I will be with you the whole time. I promise.' He let's go. He knows I will never do anything to hurt him. Ever since we grew up together. I was only 10 when I saved him. He is the same age as me. 'Time to go.' The voice beside me says. The tall, thin, white lab coat wearing man says.

He both walk down the corridor. We are both intertwined with his tail. He simply refuses to let go. He still fears the worst. I won't let that happen. We arrive at the gas chamber. I wish I could explain what's going to happen

to him. I simply can't. 'If you do this you are allowed to come home with me.' He immediately let's go and starts jumping around the room. I open the glass door. He walks up to it and looks in. There nothing in there. 'Remember I'm going to be here with you. Always.' I grab the hand. He grips mine back. I let go. He reluctantly walks in. 'Start line 2.' The men close and lock the door. He looks at me though the door. The look of sadness is almost unbearable. 'Begin the process.' I cry. The most happy time of my life will begin after this. The gasses begin to flow. The process has began. I won't be alone anymore.

'Open the doors! I need to see him!' I scream. The men look at me and then look in through the door. 'I paid you for this! Do what I say or you are fired. Go!' They quickly rush and open the door. With all of the gas vented through the roof it was clear what happened. Nothing. He looks at me and then faints. 'It's going to take a long time for the effect to start working. I'll take him back to my place for further observation.'

A few hours later he woke up. 'Hey buddy! How's it going? Felling better?' He looks at me and grunts. 'It will take a while for you to be able to feel the effects.' I grab his hand. 'It will be fine, I promise.' A few hours later while I'm watching TV he walks in. He does some kind of rasping noise from this throat. 'It will take time. Rest, sit here'. I gesture to the seat beside me. He happily sits down. I hug him. A while later I fall asleep across his lap.

It's been 3 weeks. Nothing. Well, nothing obvious anyway. The internal changes come first. I hope. At least he figured out how to write. His handwriting is pretty bad. I can make out most of it. He grunts. I hand him a piece of paper. He begins to write something. He passes the paper back. 'Ive been thinking, what am I to you? Some sort of pet?' He looks at me with tears beginning to form. 'No, you are the simple most important person to me. Nothing will ever change that'. He again begins to write. 'Am I your mate?'. He passes the paper to me. 'Yes, you are my best friend.' He shakes his head. Only then do I realise what he means. I sit still. I can't move. I completely freeze. I begin to cry. He stares at me confused. 'My last partner, they died.' He looks at me like I'm a zombie. 'I only wanted to help them, I made it so much worse. I can't do that again.' I can barely talk through the crying. He runs to his bedroom. Not the reaction I was expecting. A few minutes later I have finally stopped crying. I grab myself a drink. While I'm drinking he comes back into the room. He's holding something. Something that I've not seen for years. The first thing I gave to him. He passes it to me. I swallow the water hard. I'm guessing he's serious about me. To give me the only thing he loves more then me. 'Yes, yes you are. You are my mate. I am yours.'

It's been 2 years. 2 whole years since I saved him. They were the best years of my life. Finally finding my soulmate. It's finally time to execute the next part of plan. To give him friends.

'Hey buddy. Good morning.' I say to him. He is siting next to me. He's just reading. He really likes it. Ever since he could. 'Hey, good morning, I was just about to wake you up.' He looks over his book. 'Want some breakfast?' I sit up in the bed. 'Sure, but I need to tell you something.' I get comfortable. 'Have you ever wanted more like you?' He looks at me and thinks. 'That would be amazing, but remember they took the lab from you.' They did. After they found out my plan to help more of his kind. 'Technically, all I need is you.' He grunts. 'That's sweet, mate. But I don't think that's all you need.' He goes back to reading. 'Actually it is.' He stops reading and stares at me confused. 'All I need to have is your blood. Well, a sample at least.' We look at each other for a few seconds. 'You better not be thinking what I think you are thinking.' He shakes his head. 'Want to take a visit to the zoo?' He drops his book in shock. 'I guess you are. Let's do this. I've always wanted a brother. It would be nice.' We both smile.

We stand in front of the door. 'Ready?' He says enthusiastically. 'How would I not be?' We walk through the door. After a few minutes walking we arrive at the front desk. 'Hey, how are you....' the attendant stops. He looks straight at Jake. 'It's fine, he's with me.' I show the attendant my badge. Even know it's useless it technically is real. Well, used to be. 'Sorry, I didn't know there were people like you here.' Jake angrily grunts. 'Have a nice day!' With that, we are gone. Straight to the ape exhibit. 'See these fine apes? They, will soon be your brothers and sisters. All of them. Ours. They will all be like you.' Jake hugs me excitedly. I walk up to the first ape. I grab out a needle a stab him. I quickly insert the fluid. He ape runs off in pain. 'Jake, I'm sorry. I had to. That's the only way it will work.' He nods. I hope it spreads fast. We walk home as though nothing happened.

The next part of the plan is simple. Get Jake captured and put in the zoo. So he tell all of the infected apes what to do. I hope this works. Worst case he can just escape. He's very good at getting out uncomfortable situations. Trust me.

'You know what to do Jake.' He nods. He walks out the front door of my house. I hear him screaming and causing lots of noise. Soon. After a few hours of ear bleeding noise he finally gets captured. Then I realise, it's the wrong car. It's not for the zoo, it's for the ape shelter. This will work. He just needs to infect the other apes. I quickly follow in my car the car. I walk in the front door. I walk up to the attendant. 'Hello, I have seen that you have captured a new ape. This ape belongs to me.' He sits there and looks at me like I'm crazy. 'Here you can visit them. That we will be $20.' I reach or my wallet. 'You can by a pass if you would like.' He sounds and looks as though he hasn't slept in a week. I pass him the money. 'Thanks. Through the door on the left.' I grab the pass and walk through the door. The first ape I see is Jake. 'I got caught. Except it's the wrong place. Get me out of here.' He looks angry. 'I can't. Legally they own you. Please be quiet, they can hear us.' He glares at me. 'I will stay. Only if you bring me proper food. This good is disgusting.' He points to the “food" that they have given him. 'Stay safe. I will be here tomorrow with the food.' I put my hand through the bars are rub his head. He wraps his tail around my hand. 'Don't leave me here too long. I don't think the others like me. I love you.' I smile. 'I love you too.'. I walk back. I see the attendant reading the news paper. 'Hello, I wondering if I could bring him food? He won't like this food.' He puts the news paper down. 'Sorry, but-' He stops to see me holding a $100 note. 'All yours if you are quiet about this." He looks at me and nods. 'Pleasure doing business.' I walk to my car and drive away.

That was probably my longest night I've had in years. I could barely sleep. As soon as it was daylight I got dressed and had breakfast. The house was so quiet. I can barely remember when it was this quiet. I quickly drove to the shelter. I didn't even notice that it didn't open for a hour. I just sat there. I could barely breathe. I made sure to bring all of Jake's favourite breakfast fruit. I hope he is fine. I'm sure he's fine. At least he knows his defence techniques. I rub the bruise on my arm. Yep, he is one funky monkey. I check my watch. 8:30. Time to see what's happened. I grab a few pieces of fruit and put them in my pockets. I walk to the attendant who probably lives here. Well, that's what it looks like. 'Here is my pass' I show him my pass. He nods. 'You know where to go' I walk through the door. I see Jake standing awaiting me. All of the apes are kneeling around him. 'Jake! Are you ok buddy?!' He has blood all over him. Can't see any signs of him being hurt. 'The Alpha. It put up a good fight. I had to. I had to.' He falls to his knees. 'Jake! Talk to me buddy!' He looks at me and starts crying. 'I killed him! I had to!' I think for a moment. How can I save him? I can't let that happen again. An ape stands up. He walks to Jake. Great, I have to see Jake kill another. 'Jake, what is with this- human.' Jake stops crying and looks at the ape right in the eye. 'This! This! This is my mate. And if you so much as touch him I will kill you just like The Alpha!' The ape immediately walked up to my and bowed. 'Sorry, my king. For give me.' He bent over and positioned his head in front of my hand. 'You are for given.' He rises. 'You have made a superb choice of mate my king.' He whispers to Jake. I pretend to not to hear it. I blush. 'I'm fine here actually. It's nice. Except for the food that is.' He looks at his feet. 'I can fix that' I take the food from my pocket and pass it to Jake. He eyes just light up. It's quiet interesting actually. He quickly eats almost all of it straight away. He passes a few to the other ape. 'Now, ape. The one that talked. What is your name? So you have one?' He slowly walks to me. He is still quite skittish. 'The name is Same, my king. I look directly into his eyes. He wants to stop me. He just lets me do it. Trusting. Good. 'Good name, for a good ape.' He smiles. 'You think I'm good?'. I grab his hand. 'I know what you are feeling. I created you. And Jake. To help you. All of you!' The apes stand up confused. 'Want to be free!? I can help.' They all walk up to me and bow. 'Let's begin, shall we?' I walk quickly to the attendant. 'I'm sorry, I have to do this.' I grab the knife from my pocket. 'Don't hurt me! Leave me alone!' He screamed. 'Leave or die.' I calmly say. He runs out of the building. I run to the door. I open it. All of the apes began to slowly walk to the exit. 'Quick! We don't have much time. Run! Follow Jake. Just then runs out of the building into the street. They all follow. I try to catch up but I simply can't. A gorilla who is running beside me sees me having trouble catching up so he decides to pick me up and carry me. 'Hey big boy? What are you doing!?' He just keeps and running. Eventually he decided to talk to me. 'I'm saving you. They will not take kindly to you betraying them.' I look behind me to see the attendant with a bat. 'Time to run big bow! Show me your speed!' The gorilla somehow runs even faster. We quickly end up in the street. It's funny. A “herd" of 100 or so apes running down the street. We eventually reach the outside of the town. 'Where do we go?' The gorilla asks. 'Into the bush. Jake, lead the way.' All of the apes rush straight into the bush. Jake is going to make the best leader. Soon. Not without practice.

'We need to take care of the humans.' Sam says slowly. He expecting me to be angry. 'How?' I look at him inquisitively. He was surprised I didn't take offence. 'I don't care as long we don't lose anyone.' I say. I really don't care. They hurt me. They thought I was useless. 'Jake, you decide.' I say. All of the apes nod. 'We need to rest. Let them attack first. Make them the bad guys. We will have sentries so we have warning. Don't want them to have an advantage. Sam, organise the sentries. I need to rest.' Sam nods and walks off with a few apes. 'I have betrayed my people. You know that right Jake? I'm with you always. Have I proved myself?' He looks at me in the eye. 'You have more than proven yourself, don't doubt them.' We spend the next few hours making shelter. Only temporary I hope. I finally have the time to ask. 'Do the other apes mind?' He looks at me puzzled. 'What do you mean?' I look at my feet. After a few long seconds I decide to tell him. 'Us? Do they mind that we a mated to each other?' He looks at me and laughs. 'They actually look up to us. They think we are perfect for each other.' I blush. 'I can't believe I have someone like you.' He hugs me. 'I'm going to sleep now.' We both just lay there. We eventually fall asleep. Not the best bed one the planet. But at least I'm with Jake. I hope forever.

I wake up. The sunlight is streaming through the trees. I notice that the shelter is empty. Jake's missing. I try to control my panic. He probably just going for a walk. A walk in the nice forest. Alone. Unprotected. I need to stay calm. I can hear talking outside the shelter. 'Jake, why do we protect this human? Why don't we just get rid of him? He will betray us. I know it.' I hear some sort of massive crack. I hear creaking of a tree about to fall over. I quickly run out of the shelter. Just in time. A massive 30m tall tree crashes into the shelter. Jake rushes straight to me. 'Are you ok! Are you hurt!' I look to see what has caused this. I look past Jake to see an ape collapsed in front of the tree. 'Ah! What happened!? Who did this? How could you kill your own species!' I turn to see Jake. Anger in his eyes. For the first time in my life of was truly scared. 'He dared to overturn me'. I slowly walk backwards. 'You did this? You-'. I trip over. Jake reaches out his hand. 'I can't. You hurt him. What's to stop you from doing it to me!.' I quickly scramble to my feet. 'I'm sorry. I had to. He was threatening to hurt you. I couldn't let him do that.' I look deep in his eyes. He has never lied to me. 'I believe you. But I need to not hurt anyone else. Please! No more!' If I wasn't so scared I think I would of cried. No time. He gestures me to hug him. I slowly walk to him. He goes on his knees. I rub his head. 'Forgive me. I only do this for you. No one else has my loyalty. Only you.' He gets up. 'Don't scare me like that! I thought you were going to kill me. I thought I lost you.' He reaches out his hand. I gab it. 'I will never betray you. I would rather die.' I let got. I know. This is true. 'Time for to strike. We need to get food supplies. Sam, you are in charge.' Same nods. All of the apes walk off. The awkward situation got worse. We just stood there in silence. After a few long minutes of dodging we decide to talk. 'Ah. So. Any ideas? For the tribe I mean.' He looks at me and nods. 'Lots actually. For your safety I'm not going to discuss it.' Great. He can't trust me. Just what I need right now. 'Fine. I know you will protect me as best you can. Make sure I get some action though.' I laugh. He shakes his head. 'Sure, what ever you want. Now, what do you want to do?' I sit down on a nearby long. I gesture him to sit beside me. 'You know that you can't tell me anything. I won't judge. You know that.' He looks in my eyes. I look into his. He doesn't have any secrets. 'The ape I- killed. He was always against me. Ever since I mentioned you. It's nothing to worry about. He was in the way.' That scared me. I can't believe Jake killed his own kind for me. I understand why he killed The Alpha. He had to. Simple. It's just a scary thought. I will ignore it. It will be a once off. It bette be.

A few hours later there is a noise. Small at first. Then it gets closer. It's a car. Or maybe a truck. Great. Everything all of a sudden just gets extremely real. I'm going to jail. The truck stops. It's a long fruit and vegetables transport. Two silverback gorillas hope out of it. 'Where are the humans!? What did you do with them?! They ignore me and open the back of the truck. Sam jumps out. 'Sorry, I didn't hear that. I didn't know what to do with humans. So, I brought them here.' I quickly run over to him. 'You brought them here?! That means that they have seen me! They are going to tell everyone else! I'm so going to jail for this!' I run back over to Jake. 'What are we going to do with them?!' He looks at the gorillas. He just nods. I instantly know what's going to happen. 'I know what has to happen. I can't see it. It's too much.' Jake acknowledges me and gestures me to hug him. As I hug him, I hear two almost perfect timing cracks. I hug Jake so tightly that I think I almost break something. 'It's fine, you all fine. It's done. You're safe.'. I'm too confused to cry. They are innocent. But I have to feed my people. I can't deal with these decisions. I know understand why Jake doesn't want me to go. I can't go. It will hurt too much to go. I can't deal with sending the orders to kill innocent people.

That night I can't sleep. I just can't. No matter how hard I try I can't get that noise out of my head. Jake can't sleep either. It too me a while to even realise he is silently crying. I pretend to be sleeping and roll closer to him. He immediately grabs and start to hug me. He is crying straight into my ears. 'Jake? Are you ok buddy?' He let's go and takes a deep breath. 'You know how that it took years to save me? All that time I was tortured. They used needles to take blood, test out medicine and subjected me to horrible operations.' I sit up. He stays still. I feel anger coming. The anger is now free. 'They did what! I ordered that to stop!' I scream so loudly that Sam runs into the new shelter with some sort of spear. 'My kings what is happening! Who is attacking?' I look at him. He looks to see Jake crying and me angry. 'Ah, have I walked into something that's not my business?' We both nod. He walks slowly away blushing. Jake has completely stopped crying. Instead, he is laughing. 'It's going to be awkward to explain that to him in the morning.' He can barely talk through his laughter. I try to control the new raging emotion in me. I hold my breath. I begin the longest and the biggest laugh in my entire life. We both just sit there laughing. We eventually stop. Only took us long minutes. The best minutes. We eventually fall asleep. Too tired from laughing to stay awake.

'Wake up. It's breakfast.' I wake up to see just holding an apple. Yay, more apples. Like my 5 yesterday was not enough. 'How's it going buddy? Felling better?' He looks at me and nods. 'Lots better. Well, except for that weird- intrusion.' We both laugh. We stop laughing. We realise that we have to explain to Sam what happened. And well, the entire tribe really. That moment Same walks in. 'Ah, maybe next time my kings, have some sort of sign. Or maybe a keyword. I just need more notice.' He starts to blush again. 'Sam, it's not what it-' He cuts me off. ' I understand, you guys need privacy. I respect that.' Before I can finish an orangutang walks in. 'Your majesties, we have some intruders. We have captured them.' The thought of that noise came back. 'Let me deal with this.' I walk out of the shelter to see two men in military uniforms being held by two of the strongest looking monkeys I've ever seen. They both look like they could rip my head clean off. I didn't know that they could- the virus has mutated again. Nice actually. Well, kind of scary and distracting. Focus, Ben. Focus. 'Where did you get these men?' One of the monkeys walked forward. 'My king, these men were found scouting out position. We captured them before they could return to their base.' One of the men tried to speak. 'Let him speak.' The monkey immediately took out his gag. 'What are doing! Run! Get out of here! They'll kill you!' I laugh. 'I'm with them.' The man stopped struggling. He just stared at me. 'You monster! How could you! Your own people-' I coughed. 'My own people. They, tortured and bullied my mate! They tried out they stupid “medicine" on him. They trying to sell him to the zoo. Don't say that my people are good.' He man started to struggle. I look at Sam. He looks at me for answers. He looked back at the men. 'Hm, what should I do with you.' He walked around the men and began to laugh. I'm guessing he has plans. 'Let me see, how about some sort of punishment?' The apes hooted in excitement. I was about to stop them when the man spoke. 'My people will end you! All of you! Even you!' He looked at me. Sam did as well. 'Sam, do what you please. Along I don't have to witness it.' Sam laughed. He gestured to the monkeys to take the humans away. I on the other hand ran straight to Jake. He grabbed me. 'You really can't handle this. Can you?' I hugged him tighter. 'It reminds me of my childhood, without you. I was bullied and tortured. The adults just ignored it.' I let go of Jake. That night was freezing cold. I had to practically wrap my whole body against Jake. I need to get some cold weather gear. He was like that electric blanket I have-had at home. Until I accidentally spilt my drink on it.

'Good morning' I heard a voice call from beside me. It was Jake. He was holding some sort of schematic. Must be for the raids. Anyways it's fine. I can trust him. I blushed. I remembered what I did last night. “S-Sorry, I was cold and I just-' he cut me off with a giggle. 'Heat conservation is the least of my worries.' He was visibly blushing. 'And, well, it was nice.' The awkwardness was consuming me. 'So, I'm guessing you noticed. Did I disrupt you?' At least I tried. To make it better. Nope. Didn't work. Ahhh. I hate myself sometimes. 'Actually, I couldn't sleep. I just about to do the same thing.' We started to blush uncontrollably. Just then Sam walked in. Thank The Virus! That was need. It hasn't been that awkward in years. It's just been, well, a relationship. 'Did you find any weaknesses?' He realises us blushing. 'Ah! I did it again! Next time I'll just shout from a distance.' I walk up to Sam. I reach out my hand. He is visibly is confused. 'Umm. Do you want something King?' I laugh. 'No, this is to show respect. Acceptance. To say it's ok.' He looks at Jake for reassurance. Jake just nods. 'I'm assuming you might want to oversee.' The looks at me for confidence. I nod. 'I need to manage my problems later. For now I will join you. This once at least. We spend the next hour and a bit discussing the details of the raid. We are going to steal weapons. At first I was against it. Turns out it was surprisingly unguarded. Looks like a trap. Still, I'm going in first. Since I'm a “head bio weapon engineer".

I'm going to do this. I need to. We need to defend ourselves. The humans won't play fair. They never do. We need any advantage we can. I walk up to the entrance of the building and look in. No people. That's really weird. I need to be like I'm good. I knock on the door. Nothing. I knock again. Nothing. I open the door. It slowly creak open. The lights aren't even on. I look around for a light switch. Found it. The lights slowly turn on one by one. I walk up to the desk. I trip over. Ah, stupid floor. Why is it so... ah! What?! On the floor is a man in uniform collapsed in a puddle of blood. The blood seemed to have leaked from his skin. Weird. He man begin to move. 'Are you ok? What happened here?' No response. The man slowly moved his arm. He reached out and grabbed my leg. 'Ah, don't.' He grips harder. Ok, time to leave! He grabs my other leg with his other hand. 'Jake! I need help! Sam! Help! Anyone!' The man just holds me. I slowly drag him across to the exit. I keep screaming. Wait, they better not have gone to the back. There would be more people like this. I hear a noise at the exit. Ahh! Not another one. 'Help! Some one! Get this off me!' I hear a massive nose behind me. Sam rushes in from the back. In front of me I see Jake. Running at me with a spear. The anger in his eyes. It's scary. It's like he doesn't exist. No. Not the Jake I know. 'Ben! Get off my Ben! I kill you!' Jake runs to me. He sees what happening. He quickly stabs the spear right into the mans chest. 'Ben! Are you ok? What did he do to you?' I take a deep breaths. 'He's sick. He looks like he has caught some kind of disease. I need to investigate. I need to stop it from spreading. I need to-' Jake grabs of mans hands off me. He just hugs me. He wraps his tail around my chest. He looks at me. Sadness in his eyes. 'When there was no talking I thought something was wrong. I had to check on you. Just in case.' Sam breaks the silence of his walking. 'There's more of them. I don't know what's wrong with them. They are all the same.' I need samples. I need to find out what this is. A monkey runs up to Sam and whispers something. 'We found some prisoners. They might be able to explain this.' We trudge slowly through the ghostly base. More of them. All the same type of symptoms. Yep, it's definitely a disease. I think I know what caused this. We eventually arrive at the prison section. We see lots of apes in cages. 'Why would they do this? They are just normal apes?' I walk up to the first cage I see. 'When I get out of this cage I will kill you. Human. Just wait.' I almost fall over. He can talk. How? That's not possible. Wait, they are the apes from the zoo. I completely forgot about them. 'Ah, Jake, these are the original apes. The ones I-we infected at the zoo'. Jake grunts. 'You do realise this human, created you. Well, your intelligence anyway.' The ape moves to the back of the cell. I don't think he understands or cares. 'We need to free them.' The ape walks to the cage bars. 'As soon as I'm free I will kill all of you. All of you. You have betrayed all of your kind. You work with the enemy' I don't know what to do. Save the apes and every one will die. Let the apes die, and I become just as bad as the other humans. 'We have to sacrifice them. Or they will kill us all.' Jake nods. Sam does the same. They both know what will happen. 'Take the resources and we will move on.' We continue through the military base. Not surprisingly, some of the apes are with the first one. Then, there are the ones with him. They are one of those two. In the end we save about 30 or so. The rest were with the first one. After a few hours we leave. I hope I don't have to come back here.

It's been a few weeks since the prison event. I'm almost completely over it. They chose not to be with us. I try to convince myself it's okay. Every day there are reports of more and more humans getting infected. At least I'm fine. I'm glad I vaccinated myself. Autumn has definitely hit. The nights are becoming absolutely freezing. The only way any of us can sleep is if we have a fire for a group of about 20-30 bodies. We all just huddle near the fire. I'm going to have to fix this. We can't stay here and freeze every night.

I wake up with the faint warmth of the sun on my face. Jake not beside me like usual. Always up as soon as the first light is even slightly visible. I know he has to do it. It's for the group. It would be nice to have him here though. I guess I'll have to wait until. Patience is a virtue after all. After half an hour I'm awake enough to finally join the raid party. The whispers become voices as I join. 'We are low on food. We need to hit the next shipment of food.' I have a thought. I need to see what has happened to my old village. I need to see if there other people are affected. Maybe they could be okay. It doesn't matter. They haven't even sent a search party for me. I feel a spike of anger rise. No, this is not the time. I don't even think they know I'm missing. They continue to discuss the plan. At the same time I make mine. I walk off. I find a log and sit. After a few minutes Jake comes over. 'Anything wrong?' I stand up. I walk up to him. I stare at him. 'I need to know if the other humans are effected. If they are-'. I stop. I realise that I could of killed them with the disease. I'm sure they are fine. I made sure that it wouldn't affect humans. Well, at least I tried. It seemed to mutate. I hope I got that under control. I'm sure I did. I feel Jake staring back at me. 'The gas that the humans and I gave you. It's a “disease". It infects your DNA. It changes the order of some of the chromosomes. It, effectively rewrites your DNA. When your body next regenerates your cells it's effects and used.' I see Jake take the information. I'm not sure if he understands. No one else did. They thought that it wouldn't work. At least I proved them wrong. 'You infected me with a disease to make me more like you. You must of been lonely.' I nod. 'I was. Too much for anyone to understand. I tried to deal with it. It just made it worse. I eventually just gave up. There where months that I just wanted to end it. Then I tried to distract myself with science. The only thing that made me feel good.' I stopped. I realised I just said that out loud. I could see Jake about to cry. 'You really felt like that?'I blushed. 'I did. Until I created you-' I don't think it's possible to blush as hard as I'm doing. It's almost painful. My body begins to feel too heavy to lift. I slowly just slump. I'm about to fall over and Jake catches me. I realise I'm crying. I don't even know what's happening to me anymore. 'I'll come with you. I will be with you, always. That is my oath.' I'm too heavy to even move. I just want to sleep. I can't even do that. I can't do anything.

'Ben and I are going back to the human village. We need to see something. For research purposes.' There was silence. No one knew if it was a bad idea. Im tired of this silence. 'Sam is in charge. He will tell you what to do'. He seemed happy. I could see that he felt powerful. Jake and I walked away. I know I can trust him.

Jake and I walked down the empty streets. The place looked like it had been abandoned. Recently at that. There was no mess. It was like every one just left instantly. At least there was no people like at the military base. Still, it was quite creepy. 'Where do you think every one went?' Jake said. He looked as concerned as me. 'I don't know. At least we know they didn't die. I don't think I could deal with that.' Honestly I could easily deal with it. I can't even stand my own kind. That sounds evil. I used to think that to. Now it's just as normal as breathing. There were no signs of any drama. It's like it was some sort of organised retreat. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. We kept on walking. We eventually arrived at my house. 'Why are we here?' He said inquisitively. 'To get something important.' I winked. I know it's stupid me risking us like this. I just had to show loyalty. I have to prove myself to him. I feel like I'm not good enough. Not for him. It's the only thought I've been thinking for awhile. 'Stay here. I'll be back in 10mins. I'll be quick.' He nods. I run into the building. After a few minutes of searching I've found it. I put it my bag. Now, where is my research? I walk into my study. Tornado. That's what it looks like. Papers, books, everywhere. Damn, they must know it was me. I leave the building. 'Here, take.' I hand it to him. He freezes. His face changes. I'm not sure if it's shock. Wait, it's sadness. Nope. It's some sort of mutant combination of happiness and sadness. Wow. It's kinda scary. 'We risked our lives for this!' Now it's anger. 'We could of walked into a trap!.' My face turns into sadness. 'I just wanted to show you how much you are to me.' The anger leaves his face. Silence. 'I knew it important to you. It was important to me. 'That the best gift I've ever given or received.' Happiness now is dominant. He begins to blush. 'Hey, now is not the time for romance, let's get back. They will be waiting.' He looks disappointed.

'They know I did it. As from the looks of their military, I'm their number 1 target.' I announced. I feel like I betrayed the world. It feels awesome. I will win. This war.

I hear the faint noise of leaves being walked on. 'Ugh! Who is it? I'm trying to-' Darkness. 'Let me go! Help! I can't see!. I hear movement. Great. I'm going to die. I probably should get some sort of bodyguard system. 'I'll get you! You don't know who I am! You don't know who you are dealing with!-' I hear a massive bang. Ahh. I pass out.

Cold. Wait, what?. I can't see. Keep calm it's okay. Your alive. That's all that matters. Jake will save me. Patience. 'Take off my blind fold! I demand to see who has captured me.' The blind fold is removed. I can't move. I'm on some sort of wooden chair. Surprisingly it's not bad. It takes me a few moments to gain my vision. What? Her? How? I thought- Ahh. Great. Captured by crazy in human form. 'Hey babe, I'm glad you are awake. I hope you had a good ride.' The look in her eyes said it all. Death would be good. Now that I'm captured, by. Her. 'Hey, do you mind untying me? This is kind of ruining the mood?' She laughed. 'Im always the one untying things. Aren't I?' She winked. Great. I can't believe out of every one I'm going to die by her. Not a bear, not a gun. Kat. Wait, is that a military uniform?! 'I see yo have a new job.' I look at the medal on her chest. 'And I've been promoted. I'm now the boss. Like usual!' He laughed even louder. I swear she will make my ears bleed with that. 'Kat, I think he should be untied. It's been long enough. Plus, we need him- intact.'. He looked a man in the same uniform. 'Not the big boss? Ha, that's what I thought.' Her face went red with anger. 'Fine. This is not over Ben! I swear.' She walks off. The man shakes his head. 'How could this- create The Virus? It's just a few bones stuck together with a bit of skin.' I'm more than that. Agh. As soon as I get help I'm going to kill him. Wait, Kat first. 'Why do you need me? I didn't do anything. I swear!' I hope he is as stupid as his race. 'You, will help us. You will cure our infected.' I laugh loudly. I'm not doing anything. 'Good luck with that. I'm not doing anything.' He shakes his head in doubt. He actually thinks I'm going to help him. Nope. Wrong species mate! 'A few hours in solitary might change that mindset.'

It's not the first time I've been locked in a cage. I'm like Jake. I've been here like this before. With Kat. Damn that girl is crazy. She even tried to get me drugged to marry her. I'm not that stupid. I'm not going to trust her. Never again. An idea formed. 'Hey guard, I'm willing to talk just get me out of this cage! Please!' He opens the cage and handcuffs me. We walk down the outpost until we reach Kat. 'I'll do anything! Just please don't hurt me! I can't deal with anything anymore!' Kat walked over to me. Her eyes can just look straight through you. I swear she can hear me think. 'I'm glad you changed your mind, babe.' I still can't believe she is obsessed with me. It's probably the weirdest thing I've ever experienced. 'So, Ah, what do you need from a useless person like me?' She giggled. 'You aren't going to be useless anymore' She points. A book. Wait, that mine. Great so she is the one with my research. That's going to be the death of me. 'I want you do create a vaccine of the virus that you created. You are killing so many people.' For a moment she had genuine sadness in her eyes.' She sits down. 'I've changed, I'm better. I swear. Just please believe me. I just want you back. After we broke up I couldn't take life without you.' She started to cry. Real tears. Actually sadness. 'Ah, this is awkward but, I'm already taken.' She lift her head from her hand. Tears stream down her face. Great, now I'm the bad guy. 'The Virus, it killed my family. What's left is just me. I'm so alone.' She can barely speak over her tears. 'I'll make the cure. I'm sorry, it wasn't even meant to infect humans. It was just for Jake.' She stopped crying. 'Jake, you-you, saved him. I heard about it on the news. I guess I should start. With all of the equipment I think I can do it. I might even do it.

Each day progress is made. Each day less hope was made. I'm never going to be saved. I'm going to stay here forever. Each day I find out more of the struggles of the non infected and the infected alike. So much pain I've caused. I can't believe I done this.

'I can't believe you. You have actually changed. Your still crazy though.' Kat laughs. 'You've changed as well. I'm glad we can actually talk again.' I'm almost finished. 'The vaccine, it only can effect humans. The apes will be unaffected. I can't change that.' Kat walks up to me. She pats me on the shoulder. 'I don't care. We don't care. We just want to help people. That's our job.' The feeling of sadness enters my head. Have I been the bad guy? How many people have I hurt? How many lives have I ruined. I begin to cry. 'Once we are done you can go back. It will be fine. I still care about you.'

I wake up to absolutely chaos. The screaming is deafening. I lay still. Maybe if I pretend to be dead them might leave. Who ever “they" are. After a few minutes there is silence. I hear someone enter my room. Stay calm. I'm okay. I'm safe. Wait, I'm facing the wrong way. They can see my face clearly. The person walks up to my bed. They could probably see me shaking in fear. I can hear them breathing right next to my face. I don't dare open my eyes. The breathing then started to become more rapid and deep. Great, they are going to kill me. Then, out of the blue there was a scream. It was so loud that I thought that the room would fall apart. Crying?. Weird, why would they-. They then collapse on me. 'I will get revenge. I swear. Ben, you will be avenged!' Jake? Wait, how? I turn around on the bed. I tap him on the shoulder. He jumps off the bed and trips and lands of the floor. 'Hey, how's it going?' The expression on his face is priceless. That's the most surprised I've even seen him. He quickly gets too his feet. I sit up on the bed. He collapses on me lap. 'I thought I lost you. I thought I would never see you again.' He starts to cry. He then lifts me off the bed and hugs me. Any tighter and my skull would pop like a pimple. The thought dawns on me. What happened to the people above. Wait! If Jake thought I was dead-. I let go of him and run out to the makeshift lab. All around I see is destruction. I hear Jake behind me. 'When I saw you were getting kidnaped, I swore to get you back.' I kept looking. I need a sign. Anything so show that the humans-Kat, was alive. I had to prove that the apes weren't monsters. To my amazement I saw the cage where the food was stored. Filled to the brim with humans. I gasped. At least they were alive. 'I captured them, so when I found you, you could tell me what you want to do with them.' I walked up to the cage. The only person I need to find is Kat. 'Ben! Help me! They are going to kill us! Run! Save yourself!' She was screaming her head off. Damn, that girl can scream. 'Let this screaming one out. I want to deal with her myself. 'Ben! What? What are you doing? You are with them! What are you going to do with me!' Two silver back gorillas proceeded to open the cage and remove the wailing woman. They made her kneel and bow to me. 'Ben! I- what-ahh!' She continued to struggle, to no use. Stuck. 'Hey, it's okay. I'm not going to kill you. You, were the only person here who treated me well.' She released a sigh of relief. 'That being said, you kept me in a prison.' Fear now spread across her face. 'I might be forgiving, but, there is always a but.' She looked at me. Pure despair across her face. 'My mate here, is not so forgiving. Should I let him decide your fate?' Jake walked up to her and showed her the spear that he clearly spent a long time preparing for this purpose. 'Wait! Did you just say “mate"? Please don't! I don't want to die!' The gorillas laughed. They were convinced that I was going to let Jake kill her. 'You will be released. But, as a punishment for kidnaping all of your security guards are now going have to pay the price- death.' She too a deep breath. He looked like she didn't know what just happened. 'Free her.' The gorillas looked disappointed. They reluctantly let her go. She walked up to me and hugs me. The apes readied their spears. 'It's fine.' They seemed concerned. 'Ben, who is this?' Jake said with audible concern in his voice. 'This, is my obsessive friend. Can I please have a spear? I can't get her off.' She quickly let go. 'Sorry, I just got carried away.' Jake growled. 'Touch him again, and I will kill you regardless of what he says.' The jealousy in his voice was showing. I was just about to joke about it then I realised that he has always been protective of me. It's kind of attractive. A thought smacked into my face. All of the research is gone.

For the next few hours Kat explained what has happened with the humans. It turns out The Virus has wiped a sizeable amount of them out. The ones that survive have lifelong side effects. It also turns out the humans want me-dead. I'm not exactly excited by that notion. Well, at least it means they don't blame the apes for it. I swear if they hurt anyone I will mutate the virus myself.

'I don't trust her. She will betray us.' I shake my head. I guess I forgot to tell him. 'I know she won't. Trust me. We grew up together, she is crazy but not the revenge type.' I could see the trust in his eyes. Good, it's the truth. 'When will she leave. She's ruining the mood.' What mood? “We are trying to survive by stealing off the humans." Like that is a good “mood". 'She is staying here until she and I have made the cure.' Jake shook his head. 'I can't deal with here. I'm not going to let her help her people, not after what they did to me. Not to mention the others.' Sadness. Am I not good? Have I not helped him? The look of sadness caught his eyes. 'Do you think I'm like them? You really believe that I care about them?' A tear formed. 'No, you are the human in this world I like- love. You are the most important thing in my life. I owe you everything.' This, this is the reason why I love him. Well, one of many. 'Give me a hug you funky monkey!'. He shakes his head. 'I'm hugging you only because I hurt you.' There was a slight pause. 'And because you are my mate. My only.' There is another reason. We hug for several long glorious moments. Kat runs into the room. She looks like she just cured the virus. 'The Virus, it is remarkable! It's fantastic! It's unbelievable!' She notices what we are doing. Just literally rips Jake from me. 'You do know there is something called “knocking". She completely ignores me and continues her rant. At this point I just ignore her. “Blah, blah, regeneration properties, blah blah. Wait, regeneration properties?! 'What exactly do you mean by regeneration properties?' She grabs me by the hand and literally drags me out of the shelter. 'Ah! I'll be back!' Frustration now takes over Jakes face. I'm guessing he wasn't done. Ha, love that guy. We half walk half run through the camp. We arrive at an chimp sitting at a desk. Great. She better not have experimented on him. Kat let's go of me and runs over to get a chair for both of us. 'See! It's remarkable!' I shake my head. I don't see anything. 'This chimp! He lost his arm in the raid. Which, I still I'm angry about- never mind. I tried to save it, but I couldn't. The Virus, it restored his cells to how they were before.' She stops and lift up the chimp's right arm. At least it hasn't hurt them. It seem to “evolve" them. 'Your virus, it could save so many lives!' I shake my head. 'I made sure that it couldn't be human compatible.' She laughs. 'I can fix that, easy!' What!? So basically I spent years of my life for it be undone! Fine, she can do it. Only because it will get rid of her.

Hope you enjoyed!
