#4 of Mother and Son

Continuing straight off from "Morning Mischief" . And yes it has been quite some time since then.

The "Violent" scene later in the story could've been a lot more descriptive and tense, so I think all ages fits it all pretty well.

This one is supposed to be leading up to a few flashbacks in the next piece, so comments, suggestions, feedback are all welcome. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: It's been trimmed and made a little neater. Doesn't drag as much but essentially the same thing.

With a groan, Nate cracked his eyes opened to the sunlit room. The raccoon stretched only to recoil with a groan. Below his waist was the feeling of wrung out emptiness. Moving slowly at first, he only harbored a little tender soreness from earlier in the morning that probably had something to do with his private area curtesy of his mother. But it was a phenomenal feeling she gave him earlier. Sliding out of the bed with weary legs, he stood and rubbed his thighs and lower stomach to help ease the tension. A glance towards the alarm clock revealed it was just past noon, and time for a quick lunch. Taking in a deep breath, his nose barely picked up the delicious aromas wafting around from the kitchen.

'Is it lunchtime already?' he questioned himself looking at a clock on the wall that read ten minutes past noon. Guided by nose alone, he trailed down to the kitchen finding his mom fully dressed cooking over the stove.

"It's good to see that you're finished with your nap," she said with a quick glance over her shoulder before returning to the stove using a spatula to remove something off a tray. Nate took a seat at the table and watched her load up a plate before carrying it to him. He gave a thank you before looking over the nicely prepared meal as she walked back to get something for herself. Homemade potato chips, and a grilled cheese sandwich were served on a plate before him along with a glass of lemonade. Her cooking was definitely a big reason why he loved it so much when she took a day off from work. Normally he would help with as much around the house as he could, but that was only during a regular work day. Karen didn't want to "play" with him and kept the small lunch conservative to a degree. Besides, both were well worn out from the morning to keep them satisfied for the remaining daylight. So the lunch was eaten without any excitement until they had finished. "Do you want to go to the park?" she asked with a smile knowing it was one of his favorite places to go during free time.

"Yes!" Nate cheered in response as his mom couldn't help but laugh at how excited he sounded.

"Alright, alright, go upstairs and put on some clothes so we can go." He didn't need to be told twice and bolted upstairs as she went to find a pair of running shoes. Searching through the hall closet was all she needed to do to find her footwear, but her ears clearly picked up the scampering from above. Nate was running about first putting on his clothes, almost getting them out of order. Nate loved going to the park, and since his mom wasn't always around for him to play outside, this was a clear bonus for the day. His mom adjusted her shoes by the front door hearing him thundering down the stairs in leaps and bounds. She barely stood back up befohimself saw him racing towards her. Karen felt him hug her from behind seeing his arms closed around below the curve of her breasts. "Come on little coon!" she announced turning around to pick him up. She ran out of the house with him cradled in her arms and quickly locked the door. She ran to the car as he slipped out of her grasp only to chase after her. With doors opening and shutting, the van started and pulled out as seat belts clicked sounding them off.

The drive over seemed to take forever for Nate who earnestly looked out the window at the scenic summer environment as the drive by the neighborhood to the main road. In one yard a German shepherd was sunning herself in a very revealing red bikini, in another was a group of kids running around playing soccer, and from what he could see over a fence a family swimming in a pool. Everything else was a blur to the boy until the van actually stopped and was shut off. Nate jumped out onto the gritty asphalt and didn't waste a moment heading out to the main gateway. Karen let him go on ahead as she lingered back searching for an empty bench. The park after all was very safe with one big entrance unless you wanted to climb a nine foot tall fence. The raccoon weaved around a few people who normally crowded the front towards the middle pathway entering a large cluster of oak trees. His destination was a pond. It used to be a place where he could forget about all the shouting and troubles at home that used to clog his mind and psyche. But now he enjoyed the mini lake more now for its tranquility.

Not too many joggers ran by there anyway as he stayed towards the center of the path. Reaching his destination, he sat by the waters edge looking at the koi fish swimming around in the pond. It was peaceful watching the fish swim around and gave Nate something to do for the moment. He followed them around the waters edge wondering how the fish always knew they were being watched. It proved to be adequate entertainment for the pre teen until his gaze was directed up at a few low hanging branches, bringing a smile to his masked face that hid a creative mind at work. After Karen watched Nate walk off to the forest center, she found an empty bench. The wolf re tied her shoes getting prepared for a good workout of running. With a simple warmup out of the way, she began the route where a few others were in the mood for a jog. The run itself was somewhat scenic, small fields that wove together with the trees and shrubs that were scattered or lined up only to cluster back towards the center. Not quite her taste of a beach line sunset, but anything was better than a treadmill or elliptical in a sweaty boxed in gym.

And time gently rolled by as the two utilized their two hours worth of free time. Approaching the entrance gate for the umpteenth time, Karen stopped by a lonely bench and cooled down. She hoped Nate was finished with his "explorations" in the makeshift forest. Even regular housework wasn't so tiring under a sun. She took a sip from a water fountain and wiped her forehead waiting for him.

"So hot stuff, you run here to a lot?" a voice way too deep to be Nate's rang out. Karen's ears folded back as she turned to see if someone was really talking to her. Much to her dismay it was someone else, a tall grey wolf who obviously had some husky in him with his curled tail wagging.

'Yikes,' she thought frowning. He had been running too from the looks of it even though she hadn't seen him. "Pardon me?" she asked what hopefully sounded unfriendly since he was definitely barking up the wrong tree. Too bad he didn't pick up on it.

"I was wondering if you wanted to run with me, you look too lonely by yourself out here," he said with a less than appealing smile.

"Sorry to disappoint you, but I just finished," she curtly replied wanting him to go away.

"Yeah I guess running does that," he rubbed the back of his head not taking his eyes of her, "how about going out for a drink instead? My treat." He reminded her of someone who liked to pick up people at bars for a classic one night stand. 'Doesn't no mean anything to him?' she thought seeing Nate walking towards her from a pathway with a leaf clinging to his shirt.

"Sorry, I'm not interested," She flatly told him. The Casanova character didn't want a no and pressed on.

"Please, let me introduce myself-" he was cut off as the smaller raccoon hurried over catching both adults' attention. Nate ran up and gave his mom a hug and stood next to her.

"Mom who is he?" he asked looking up at the stranger. Karen wrapped a tight arm around him and gave a sweet smile.

"I don't know sweetie he was just about to introduce himself." The white wolf looked back up to see her unwelcome acquaintance surprised. Clearly embarrassed, he made a forced grin and gave a quick goodbye before leaving with a growl of frustration. "Have fun?" she turned back to Nate plucking the leaf off of him.

"Yes," he nodded as they walked over to the main gate.

"Mind telling me what you did?" she asked knowing it couldn't have been too much.

"Just sat by the pond and played around the trees," he strolled along by her side. Karen spotted a few buildings and stopped getting his attention. Nate turned as his mom pointed to a small ice cream shop and before the raccoon knew it, he was walking back to the car with a double scoop of chocolate chip mint in a vanilla cone.

"That better not spoil your dinner," she teased rubbing his head fur. He only giggled licking off a piece on his nose before taking a bite out of the cone. Nate never had a problem when it came to food with his fast metabolism. Pretty soon they were on their way back home. With a final crunch, the cone was gone and swallowed leaving one happy raccoon satisfied as they turned onto their street slowly approaching home. After parking and leaving the vehicle, they ran after one another all the way to the front door before she caught Nate already low on energy from running. "Ok little guy, let's take a breather," she said catching her breath as he smile wrapping his arms around hers. Karen let go of him noticing the time and decided to at least start preparing dinner. "Anything on your mind for dinner?" She asked walking into the kitchen.

"No!" Nate said while he took off his shoes In the foyer.

"Spaghetti sound nice to you?" She questioned pulling out a box of pasta this time receiving a happy nod from her son. She pulled out a pot and started filling it with water as her son lined his shoes against the wall. "I'm going to play in my room," he announced running off. "I'll call for you when it's done," she told him as he headed for the stairs. And an hour later, they were both eating at the table. Much to Nate's dismay dessert was skipped entirely. Whatever was left of the evening was spent like any other regular family. Karen didn't want to "play" with her son yet and overwork his already drained body. But on the upside, he was young and would easily spring back to action tomorrow when she returned from work tomorrow. Activities wound down as Karen found herself getting ready for the daily grind of tomorrow. "Work tomorrow," she made a face at the alarm clock before setting it. But taking the day off went pretty well, and was worth every minute of her time. Karen left her room to put up the leftovers back downstairs. She made her way across the short hall barely noticing her son's room was dark and void. Karen walked around a corner only to find Nate rummaging through the freezer in search of dessert.

It was cute seeing him trying to work so quietly in his too short pajama pants. She made a mental note to buy something larger for his growing size. The wolf tiptoed up behind her son to where she was looking straight down at him. In one swift motion, she covered his eyes with a paw and shut the freezer drawer with the other making him gasp standing up straight bumping into her.

"Uh... Hi mom," he said unable to see through her black padded palm. "I should do more than scold you," she cooed into his ear reaching a hand down to his pants tracing over him, "but I have work tomorrow and you should be going to bed." Nate rubbed his eyes feeling her let go of him.

"Sorry mom," he said, ears folded back. His mom swiftly wrapped everything up and placed it in the fridge for another time.

"You know it's late. Come on let's go to bed," she said turning around heading to the stairs with him right behind. Nate almost wanted to know what "scolding" she had in mind, but then again there were plenty of things he wanted to ask her since his last day of school. They traversed the hall and climbed up the stairs, cutting out any lights remaining lit along the way. Karen paused by the hamper outside the bathroom and stripped down before tossing them in, after all there wasn't much sense in being fully clothed to sleep during the summer. Nate followed suit and quickly shucked his off throwing them into the half full hamper. She took a step to her bedroom but paused and turned around feeling a tug from behind.

"Can I sleep with you?" He asked holding onto her tail. Karen couldn't help but smile seeing how adorable he looked standing there next to her. "Of course you can, but I have to get up early for work if that's ok with you." Nate nodded his head and followed her to the bedroom. Closing the door behind Nate, Karen guided her son through the darkness where the promise of sleep awaited them. Peeling the covers back, he scrambled into the bed with his mom right behind. The shuffling between fur and sheets ensued as both made themselves comfortable. Nate felt a pair of protective arms wrap around his midsection pulling him back. His back was pressed against his mother's front and he gave a content sigh closing his eyes. "Sweet dreams," she chimed into his ear before settling her head above his on the pillow. Nate murmured a goodnight as well and placed his hands on top of hers. She settled back and began her routine trip to dreamland. Or at least what she hoped for was a good nights sleep.

Karen's ears perked up and heard a thump from downstairs. A quick glance at the alarm clock revealed not even an hour had passed since they went to sleep.

'Oh what now?' She was tempted to just let the noise slide as she fell asleep but it didn't entirely go away. The coarse noise was followed by very quiet footsteps that had her concerned enough by now to get out of bed with Nate sitting up a little confused.

"Where are you going mom?" she heard a quiet voice from the bed. Putting on a nightgown, she thought up a quick response not wanting him to worry.

"Oh, just getting some water, sit tight and I'll be right back," she said. Nate nodded and laid back down on the soft mattress. Closing the door behind her, Karen looked down the dark stairway, only lit by a faint moon glowing from outside. Another clunk was heard with a heavy sounding step. Feeling annoyed, Karen silently went down the stairs carefully avoiding the places where they creaked. Peeping her head around the corner, she ducked back and rubbed her eyes to make sure what she had just seen was real. Much more slowly, the white wolf looked around the corner only to find out it wasn't her eyes playing tricks on her. On the other side of the living room was a burglar rummaging through small antique trinkets on a shelf above the fireplace, slowly making his way towards a tv nestled on top of a stand. He dropped something and cursed quietly doing his best to maneuver around the foreign area. Focusing closely, she noticed this was a clumsy criminal at best with a smaller frame than herself. 'Thank god my father taught me self defense,' she thought carefully maneuvered around the corner and approached him from the shadows. She could smell his less than appealing scent that reminded her of a mechanic's shop as he continued to search near the tv.

Karen quickly closed the distance like an assassin without making a sound. Thank goodness for her the moonlight beamed against her from the window so he couldn't see any shadow eclipse him. There wasn't any weapon she could detect on him, but you could never be too sure. One last step closed the gap and Karen decided to act. She roughly grabbed his shoulder and spun him around feeling him tense up. When he faced her, his jaw dropped coughing out a pathetic squeak in surprisal. "Wrong house to break into punk," she growled to the person hiding behind the ski mask, albeit happy that he hadn't done any real damage so far. As if guided by impulse alone, she grabbed the top of the black fabric and pulled it off his face. The petrified burglar didn't interfere, far too scared to rationally think with the deer in headlights look he gave off. After nearly getting stuck on his muzzle, it slid off as she held it above his head only to give off an expressed look of shock herself. The fleeting unexpectedness immediately gave way to a gross frown creasing her black lips. Her eyes burned with a steely hatred, the resemblance was almost uncanny. With the typical black ski mask disposed, she was mistaken, only under close inspection.

The potential robber was a raccoon, grey fur, short ears, even the exact darker "mask" covering around his eyes. He did in fact look just like her ex husband, Harold, when she caught him having an affair with several other women. The only major difference was the color of his eyes, blue instead of the green they were supposed to be. It took her a year to prove it and countless arguments that were bound to have had a negative effect on her son. The only thing that angered her more than cheating on his own family was that he packed his bags with a straight face leaving her and Nate all alone for good, no love whatsoever, as if it were a mistake from the start. She never let anger get the better of her, but after keeping it buried for so long the emotional cap cracked as she balled up a fist gripping the back of his shirt with the other. The frightened look of the criminal gave away his lack of experience with what he tried to perform, reminding her of Harold's face on that unlucky day. Karen only gritted her teeth, it felt too much like a ghost haunting her.

Without much thought, her already clenched fist was pulled back before slamming him in the cheek. A sickening wail followed from the robber below, like that of a dying animal, which didn't go unnoticed upstairs. Nate's eyes shot open as he sat up distressed, he had just fallen back asleep. He groped the sheets around for where his mom should be only to panic. This was more than a nightmare to him, and his mom had been downstairs for quite sometime now.

'What's going on?' he hopped out of bed and ran to the door. Twisting the knob open, he ran out to the top of the stairs seeing the moon casting light in funny shapes through the windows. Down below he could a few muffled noises. Panicking, he quickly ran to the first floor as his heart pumped adrenaline throughout his body. He heard the funny noises coming from the living room and jumping off the last step, Nate turned only to freeze in place. A tall figure rained down countless numbers of punches and blows on a smaller person being held in the air. The flight or fight response going through his body seemed to jam up as he watched. It took him a moment to figure out who was his mom and who was the intruder. The first rational thought coming to mind was that his mom found this person breaking into their home, but nothing could explain why she would be harming him to this extent so viciously. As the robber tried defending himself, her anger only grew. With lightning speed and precision, she slammed down a clawed foot onto his smaller one. His scream sounded like a broken toys as she clamped his muzzle shut with a iron hand preventing it from escaping his throat.

All the distraught mother could think about was how cheated and abandoned she felt when her world came crashing down, finally able to express the pent up anger very physically. Nate knew about self defense but this didn't seem moral even if this person was intruding. The sickening punches only continued along his upper body until he had enough taking a step forward. "Mom stop!" He cried out running to her. His plea fell on deaf ears as he approached with an outstretched arm to stop her. His mother's blind rage continued even when he was right behind her. Nate reached over to grasp her shoulder but was quickly cut off. Her elbow pulled back without warning bopping Nate in the nose causing the raccoon stumble backwards. The hardwood floor hurt his elbows and back making him cry out before scrambling to his feet in fear. The shriek pierced the white wolf's thick skull enraptured in righting a dead wrong making her fist stop. Karen turned around only to see her son running away from her before turning to the stairs. Clearing her mind with a shake of her head, she realized what just happened and barked in annoyance. All the rage that coursed through her was instantly replaced with concern for the well being of her son.

A cough made her turn back to the other raccoon who wasn't faring so well as Nate. With a thud he was dropped to the floor only to be walked on making him groan in pain. A window being opened was heard before the intruder was picked up by the scruff of his neck nearly making him gag. Karen winced looking at him in the clear moonlight. His face was quite literally a bloody mess that was almost unrecognizable marked by ragged breathing.

'Oh god,' she thought as he coughed up a little blood onto her nightgown. The damage was done and Nate had seen her do it. "Don't ever come back here again got it?" her voice wavered as she shook him trying to get his attention. The weakest of nods was given before she tossed him out the window. He landed with another thud before standing up to a pair of wobbly legs scampering off somewhere into the night. There wasn't a need to call authorities, he wouldn't be coming back unless he had amnesia the next day, and the police would only bring unnecessary stress to Nate. Shutting the window before re locking it, Karen dashed to the stairs to find him. Turning to the first step, each movement seemed to take an eternity for her as she looked up to the second floor. Her shadow cast onto the wall by her left caught her eye from how big and distorted it looked. Karen felt a pin of fear of what her son saw a few moments ago only to ball up her fists feeling like an idiot for allowing the anger to control her. She went back into her bedroom only to find it void. Puzzled for a second, Karen's mind blanked before she turned around facing the other room. 'Oh Nate!' she ran across the short hall to his room.

The door was wide open as she paused by the entrance seeing the bed untouched. Her son cowered in the corner farthest from the door, shivering as if he were in an icebox. Seeing her in the doorway made him ball up tighter, clenching his eyes shut. Karen spotted him and hurried over to him discarding the nightgown on the end of the bed. Kneeling in front, she did remember hearing Nate running up to her as she pummeled the intruder with rage. "Are you ok Nate!?" she frantically searched his arms and head scanning for any sight of bruising.

"Why didn't you stop," he asked pitifully, "I know he was a bad guy an' all, but it didn't seem right." He paused to rub his sore muzzle. "Then you hit me," he practivally sobbed out. Nate's image of his mom being the great white wolf protector that she was, had a crack for now seeing her so angry.

"Mommy never meant to hurt you," she said worried and distraught from everything thus far. "He did break into our house," Karen added. She reached out with a caring pair of hands to hold him, but he seemed resistant. Nate moved his head back until it greeted the cold wall, still unsure how to process the raw anger that she had used. Her arms wrapped around him nonetheless and picked up the frightened raccoon, carrying him to his bed. She still had plenty of emotions to sift through but her son came first and foremost when danger presented itself. Karen laid down holding him close to her as his nobs grew weaker. Although much to her dismay, he kept his hands to himself and tried backing away feeling his chin come in contact with her body even as she continued to hold him. If he abandoned her then she would be left all alone, something she would refuse to let happen. The anger from earlier could be felt coming back, being refused by her own son, even if it was taboo. The stale taste of emotions stemmed out briefly. "You love me right?" she nearly growled at him before catching it in her throat. He started shaking lightly again, scared from how she was acting.

"Of course I do mom," he said shakily threatening to break down own again. Karen forced herself to cool down knowing it wouldn't help Nate if she shouted and yelled at him. He went through plenty of that for more than a year. Another tear fell from his eye down the furrowed stain around the sides of his muzzle. A warm tongue washed over his eyes and around where he had been crying while doing her best to rub his back reassuringly. "Grown ups hurt on the inside just like everyone else. We just lose control easily," she explained feeling helpless looking back down at him. Nate noticed her eyes returning to the real mom he knew and hugged back earnestly still hoping it would turn out to be a stupid nightmare. Karen rubbed his back doing her best to soothe her son and for the briefest of moments, her thoughts could peruse tomorrows daily schedule only to sigh. Skipping again like today wouldn't go so easy for anyone. Karen decided it would be best if she went, after all Nate knew how to take care of himself since they were the only two living together under the same roof. And giving him some time alone might help.

"Does making yourself happy get rid of all these terrible feelings?" he asked looking up at her with those all too innocent eyes threatening to brim over with more tears. She shook her head unable to lie to him and hugged him close, "I wish it could solve everything," she whispered to him. 'If only I handled the situation a little better,' Karen thought rubbing his back.

"I don't think I could do any of that now anyway," he shivered briefly holding back any more tears that wanted to reform. Nate was more disappointed for not being able to help his mom feel better, however the raccoon was not brave enough to tell her that. Everything seemed more fragile since now. Nate felt terrible for feeling useless and his mother wasn't having any easy time either. She felt a pang of guilt for pulling him into her lust filled fantasy that he never should have found out about. It may have helped her on the inside, but he wasn't supposed to be doing things like that until later in life with someone that wasn't so directly related to him. Someone that he would love more than her.

"Well I want you to decide if you want to keep doing those things with mommy. You can have all day tomorrow to think it over before I come home from work ok?" she softly told him not wanting to force him through anything unpleasant. Nate nodded in response and wrapped his arms around her the best he could, burying his face into her tuft of golden fur. "I'll explain everything and answer any question you have," she rubbed his back soothingly seeing his eyelids looking heavy starting to droop. She shivered feeling a chill creep up her spine. Karen pulled her son close as they fell asleep on his bed, an uneasy cloud forming over both. How could unexpected events dig up things best forgotten?
