#3 of New Days

I look around, making sure that there is still no one around.

"Tyler, I think we should stop before someone sees us." I lower myself back down to the ground, being careful not to land on anything like a bench.

Reluctantly, Tyler does the same, "Aww, come on. I just found out that I'm not the only mage I know, and all you are worrying about is getting caught."

"Well, getting caught is something to worry about, Tyler."

Still a bit dissappointed, he says, "Yeah, I know."

"Okay, let's get back to your house and ask your dad if it's alright if we can take a walk. I know just the place to have some fun."

At this, he brightens up significantly, though not seeming to notice my double entendre, "Sure, I'd love to see what you can do. My parents arn't mages, so I can only do abstract, simple spells."

"Oh yeah, that's right. How did you just levitate back there? Like you said, I'm the only other mage you know."

"Umm, I don't know really. It's like if I visualize something and practice enough, I can do simple things that are easy to copy. And since you seeing flying and levitation in movies and TV shows all the time, I figured I should just copy what they do."

"And it's just as simple as that?"

He shook is head, "No, not really. It took me weeks time from when I started to stay off of the ground for more than a few seconds at a time, but I just worked at it until I could stay in the air with ease. I had to try different things here and there, it's really hard to describe."

"That sounds a lot like my grimoire...", he gives me a funny look, so I continue, "my spell book, I got most everything I learned from it. It gives me vague guidelines, so I just have to tinker with it and fill in the blanks. From what it says, no two mages cast spells the same way. What works for me will most likely not work for you."

"Wow, You have a spell book... grimoire? Do you think it would be alright if I could see is sometime?"

I sigh, "Well, I don't know. There is a bit of a problem with your dad..."

His eyes widen, "What, why?"

"Your dad is a Templar, they don't like mages very much. They are still under the belief that most mages are evil, that they need to protect the mundanes, non-magical furs, from them. I think that their hearts are in the right place, but they seem to distrust all mages. Most won't attack us without reason, but some do."

I regret the last sentence the moment I say it.

His eyes now wide with horror and fear, "But, my dad..."

I put my arm around his shoulder, "No, Tyler. Your dad isn't like that; he already knows that I am a mage, and warned me not to do magic in his house. That's why I had to go to the park to show you. Other than that, he is alright with it. Though, I'm not sure if he knows if you're a mage or not and how he would react if he finds out."

This seems to calm him down a lot, "Thanks, Jay. It's just, well, my dad..."

When he doesn't seem to finish I say, "I know Tyler. I'd be worried too."

Before we get a chance to say anything else, Tyler's phone alerts him of a call from his father.

As he gets his phone out of his pocket, he says, "One sec... Hello?"

After listening he looks to me and says, "Dad says that something has happened, and we need to get home. He needs to talk to you."

He gives me the phone. "Hello? Is something wrong?", I say.

Seeming urgent, he replies, "Something is very wrong; the Grand Inquisitor has been killed and the Knights are calling an emergency meeting. I want you two home. Now."

I say hushedly, "We ca be home now, if I have your permission, of course. Otherwise, it will take about 15 minutes."

Still urgent, but with a bit of annoyance, he says, "Okay, do it. Just don't be seen."

Rolling my eyes, I tell him, "We will be there in a minute. Bye."

The line goes dead without a goodbye.

'Don't be seen...' I think to myself, does he think that I'm still a pup? That I don't know how to use magic properly without being seen by mundanes?

I return the phone to Tyler, point to the woods off of the street, and say, "Let's go this way, it'll be faster."

He raises an eyebrow and opens his muzzle to say something, but I cut him off with, "Trust me..."

He nods and follows me into the woods.

Once out of sight from the street and away from prying eyes, I hold my paw out to Tyler and say, " You might wan't to close your eyes, or might get the worst case of motion sickness you've ever had.

He stares at my hand and says, "You mean you can..."

I smile and answer, "Yup."

He takes my paw in his. Awed, he says, "I would think that by yourself it would be hard enough, little alone, with someone else..."

I smirk at his the double meaning at his words. He blushes when he realized what he said.

We close our eyes and I concentrate. A couple of seconds later the wild ambiance fades into the warm air of Tyler's dining room.

Tyler's dad must have heard us because he called, "Jay, Tyler, is that you? I need to talk to you two.", and adds a second later, "Martha, you too."

We walk into the living room where he is sitting.
