Rise of the Fenrrir, Amanda's Story (chapter one)
Just a small short story linking to a big project I'm working on.
If someone had told me six months ago that I would fall in love with a Fenrrir I would have laughed in their face and commented on how Fenrrir are such a putrid and horrible race they are. If someone came up to me today and asked me what I thought of them I would call them a wise, noble and beautiful race. So I am writing this to tell my story in the hopes that it may help others who are like I was at the beginning to become what I am now and accept the Fenrrir for who they are.
Let's start there, the beginning. Appolen was shining brightly on this wonderful autumn day. The sky was blue and the trees were a beautiful red, except for the evergreens. I was on horse back riding towards the Ilam, Gremay border. I hated the journey from the start. My king had received a letter a long time ago informing him that Ilam had been taken over by the Fenrrir beast, he immediately threw into a rage, shouting at anyone that came near, so I thought it wise to stay away. Seven years of bloody war later he finally conquered Gremay and could turned his attention back to his home. He eventually sent for me, one of his most trusted stewards, and in his tent he told me of his plan to send me into Ilam and getting me to send him information on the Fenrrir control. I hated the idea from the start, protesting it and voicing my opinion, but he would not be swayed so I had to go.
I hate him for sending me on this... errand but what's worse is that for me to blend in I would have to be naked bar a loin cloth, so he made me strip in front of him but I kept my clothes in a harvest sack along with supplies for the trip. I had been going for a day and a half before I sighted a sign that said 'border 10 miles'. I dismounted and let my horse drink from a nearby stream; I had put my clothes back on and would take them off when I got near the border. I opened the harvest sack and pulled out some food of my own.
"Hey pretty lady, don't move to sudden now or you might get an arrow in your back, nod if you understand." I nodded my head. "Good now turn slowly with your hands up." I did as instructed. The thief was right; he had a bow pointed at me. "Now what I want you to do is give me all your coin and take off that dress so I can see that pretty little body of yours." I took out my coin purse and tossed it to him, I then reached around the back of my dress and started to untie the string of my dress. "You may want to point that bow away from that female if you want to live thief." We were both equally surprised by the voice that seemed to come from now where. "I won't ask again thief." The thief slowly lowered his bow slackening the string. "Good, now throw the purse back to the lady and be on your why while my mercy still last." He dropped the purse and ran as fast as he could away from me. I then got my first encounter of a Fenrrir but it wasn't quite what I expected. A female came out from the bushes with a bow at her side, her tribal paint was a shade of brown and not like any I had seen in Ilam. She looked to me with a smile on her face and she looked kind, I quickly dismissed the thought and was ready for her to pounce and eat me. "I don't mind thieves that steal for food but I hate those that steal for money. Anyway I'm Kara nice to meet you and I'll be on my way now." She turned to leave. "Wait, I wanted to say thank you. You didn't have to step in." She turned laughing. "No offence human but if I didn't he would have taken everything you had and left you on the edge of the road. That's the problem with you human females, you can't defend yourselves and that's Dama's doing." Dama was the god that created humans and gave females their place. "Of course if Eve had her throne back things would be different, but I digress. If you want I'll take you to the boarder, then I need to go back to my tribe." "Thank that's incredibly kind, just one question, who's Eve?" she smiled knowingly. "I'll tell you on the way."
She walked on the plain side of the path, so she could easily dodge out of sight. She explained to me that Eve was the true mother of humans but her husband, Dama, tricked her of the throne. "Of course change is afoot, Ilam has been taken and soon the balance of the Gods will be restored. Well as the prophecy foretells but I don't believe in them personally." "So you believe in gods and rituals to please them but not prophecies, seams a little silly." She laughed at me. "Silly my tail, Ethia herself, you should know who that is, said that no has a fate at birth but choosing different paths can make one or change it but it is never sealed. So I don't believe in prophecies because it means that our fate is sealed." We continued on for another ten minutes before coming to a river that ran through the path.
She stopped the horse and drew an arrow, hopping into the bushes. "What is it?" I asked. "I hear and smell something coming." Smell, now that is silly. But she was right. No sooner had she said it then the thief we met early jumped out of the bushes and swung a sword down on Kara, she blocked with her bow and released an arrow that sent him to Haseid's palace. She rose and ran her hand across her head; she removed her hand with blood on it. "You're hurt." "It's nothing just a scratch, I mean I've had worse from a rose bush for goddess sake." Disregarding her protests I climbed off my horse and bandaged the wound.
We continued travailing and Kara stayed at my side regardless of it being a ten mile walk, or jog should I say because that was the pace we kept. I was already amazed by the ability of Fenrrir, not once did she complain or ask to slow down, she didn't even pant and she had no reason to stay by me, she just did. We discussed our life stories, of course mine was fake, but hers was very interesting. She was only eight years old but was already pregnant with her first cub but what surprised me more was that it didn't belong to her mate, when I asked about it she laughed. "It would be impossible for my mate to get me pregnant, well in this lifetime anyway. Oh I didn't tell you my mate is a she, silly me." "So how do you get pregnant? I mean... yeah you know what I mean." "Well myself I had a male impregnate me although there are other ways but none that will make the cub your partners or vice versa if she's carrying." We continued to travel in silence and soon the landscape started to change. The wide open plains were replaced by a forest of red trees, shedding their leaves. Of course Kara had some interesting things to tell me about the forest pointing out a few plants that could be used for medicine and some that would be poisonous. In a way she changed my perception of Fenrrir the most with her kindness and openness, as well as her being the first Fenrrir I ever talked to. Soon we had made it to the border and Appolen was high up at noon. We stopped at the wall in the forest. "Well this is where I'll be leaving you. Good luck finding a better life Amanda." "And good luck with your cub." I shock hands with her and then she disappeared into the forest. I kicked the horse and got it moving again. Across the border into enemy territory, or were they my enemy?
